Amanda Deaton left her hometown right after high school, looking for adventure. But now, thirty-five years later, her mom needs her, and this GenX nomad has come home. Bellevue, Kentucky has changed--they even have a Thai restaurant! And here where Amanda least expected it, a new kind of adventure might be looking for her.
Her yoga instructor, Chris, is hot. Like, making her stammer over her words, making her stare at him across a crowded sub shop hot. And wonder of wonders, he seems to be staring and stammering at her, too. But how does he know her high school nickname? Any guy that good-looking she would surely have remembered.
But just like Bellevue, Chris has changed a lot. Turbo, the skinny freshman trackstar, sweet but entirely unmemorable, has grown into a gorgeous, caring, confident man with a thriving career and a grown-up daughter. What hasn't changed is the torch he still carries for his high school crush.
Chris has dreamed of a life with Amanda since he was fourteen years old. At age 54, Amanda has never really given away her whole heart. Could their timing finally be right?
I read this as an ARC in digital format, and am leaving an honest review.
I LOVED this book! In spite of being on the short side (at 170 pages) I found the characters to be well developed and the story entertaining and enjoyable. The internal and external dialogue is smart and funny, but can also be serious, and her characters are believable folks who talk like people you might know. The interactions between the main characters and their friends, parents, and each other feel authentic.
Bryant's writing is excellent - well crafted and a pleasure to read.
As a Gen-Xer myself, I could totally relate to the main characters and what they were going through. I laughed out loud at many of their/my youthful cultural references. The romance between Mandy and Chris was sweet, with enough heat to remind those of us of certain age that we've still got something going on. As well, Bryant deftly handled issues of aging parents with understanding and grace, while showing (often with humor) that our parents' generation were more than just out parents.
Using song titles from 80s & 90s tunes as chapter titles was inspired, and added to the fun vibe of this story. It was great to have a "shared history" with these characters - and I really enjoyed getting to know Mandy and Chris.
I will definitely be reading more Gen-X romances by this author.
