This book reads like I picked it up halfway through the story. To say I'm disappointed would imply the fact that I have expectations when there was none. I usually reserve my one star for books with questionable themes and plot that would make me go, "why would you write this?" and while the chosen one talks about fairly decent characters and plot (or the lack thereof), the question continues to linger in my mind. Why was this published like this?
The Chosen One follows Cordelia Jimenez along with her sisters to find out what exactly they were chosen for and to uncover the story started by their ancestor that dated back from the salem witch trials, believing they are the only ones powerful enough to stop the world from its doom. This book has the typical elements one would enjoy in their usual fantasy book: family dynamics, dead mothers, prophecies, love interests, and chosen one plotlines even when I don't exactly see how or why, but it's there. It would've been an okay book if the author actually bothered to execute this properly and not leave a concept of a plot in the process because that's exactly what this book is. A concept of a plot, just pure vibes.
This book is actually a bit entertaining for me to read in the-what-the-hell-sure! kinda way but that negates the fact that this book has many problems than an average book should have. Starting with the technicalities, the first note I actually wrote about this book was: is this book edited at all? there are noticeable grammatical errors all throughout the book that it surprises me that I was here reading it like this as though it was in its rough draft. The narration was also flat and emotionless as it was often unaccompanied with descriptions. if you hand me this book and say it's an epistolary in a text format I would've believed you just because of the lack of descriptions alone. The book also tended to be repetitive especially with character dialogues like how Cordelia always sees something flicker on someone's face and gone in the next but she saw it nonetheless yada yada yada, or how the siblings's banter always goes in this exact same formula:
The characters have interesting dynamics, sure, but I really can't help but think of them as one dimensional non playable characters with no personality at all, not counting the one that was coded into them. There is a prophecy. They are the chosen ones. There are demons invading their house. But the one who only gives a fuck is their middle sister, Cordelia, even when she's a bum on her own most of the time. The author keeps trying to show that they have this deep bond when they feel like they are written as a family referenced from a funny Tumblr post. I really cannot with them proceeding to live their own lives while a demon is looming over their shoulders. Like yes, Cassie, this is not the time for mimosas. Or for a bar.
And speaking of bars, the way this book barely explored anything almost made me laugh enough to continue because it's just plain ridiculous to think about it. This fantasy book is set in the modern times where witches and demons exist but lets keep these characters in a closed box where they can only go to three places and three places only! It will seriously kill them to explore outside their house, Gideon's house, and the freaking bar. All they do is go to the bar. They went to the bar at the same frequency Cordelia was narrated having "training" with Gideon. All these bar hoppings could've been a different thing in a different setting with a chance to explore into the book's world building more because all of it feels non existent until the very last page of this book.
The failure that is this book started to be even more noticeable when everything suddenly got handed to Cordelia on a platter. She didn't even try to do anything yet all she does is complain that nothing of importance is happening. she was always portrayed to be this strong character who tries so hard to hold the foundations of her family but at the end of the day, Cordelia Jimenez is just a turtle that echoes incessantly within its shell. Unmoving without a purpose. she keeps saying how she's been doing everything to save them when I'm already at 70% of the book and all they know is about the demon's name and what he rules. It's so strange how every progress was triggered by a random book they accidentally found in their house or a book they found outside their house without bothering because they just stumbled upon it too through their friend Theresa. Why couldn't they have found it months ago when it was just sitting right there? It reads like a lazy writing choice. why not just let theresa do everything in the background and let the Jimenez sisters dilly dally around the house, like they always do, since the first chapter? It would definitely save both of us some time.
And while this part is one of the things I actually tolerated from this book, Cordelia and Gideon's relationship is so plain and annoying most of the time but it did produce me this banger line, “I don’t know how to stand here and pretend I don’t want you.” I'm nothing if not a sucker for romance and it actually made me smile. Despite that, Gideon has no personality whatsoever but a try hard sassy funny mmc who does nothing but yearn for the fmc. I would've let it pass, you see, but even the yearning in this feels like a sogging cardboard found on the streets. I believe that if you removed this from the book, the chosen ones would progress the same and that definitely says something. I saw his and Theresa's betrayal happening like yesterday. If not for the incessant use of “I saw something flicker in his face and gone in the next” bullshit maybe others wouldn't have seen it coming! I don't know! The smut scene was also atrocious by the way. They also definitely don't act like thirty and something years old.
The Chosen Ones had every potential that it missed, yet I really think the story would improve a lot had the book marinated things slowly and introduced concepts properly with a better execution and narration to its readers, and I do hope it will start in its sequel.

Did Not Finish

I found the world to be too simplistic, with not enough immersive details to the magic system to allow me to visualize scenes in the way I’m certain the author originally intended. I wanted more detail; instead of enemies appearing out of nowhere with no real buildup. If there were more tension in the action scenes, I would have felt the same urgency as the characters. Additionally, although there was a meet-cute with the male lead, he came on too strong, asking too many personal questions of Cordelia at their first meeting that didn’t feel appropriate and appearing too much without proper grounding that it came off rather stalkerish to me. I think if toned down, I would have to like him more, but the enthusiasm turned me off and was almost theatrical. While not for me, others may enjoy reading an accessible fantasy with witches.

This book had everything that would usually capture my attention: sisters who are witches, magic, demons, an underworld... Usually, I would be more than thrilled to read something like this. I thought it would have vibes similar to Charmed, and it did. However, this book wasn't for me. I think this book could be so much more, it had the potential.
The story revolves around a family of witches, a group of three sisters who have recently lost their mother who "sacrificed" herself because she knew that something was coming and they were the chosen ones to defeat whatever this sinister danger is lurking. This book might be for you if you don't mind repetition and need something simple with not a whole lot going on or if you like books that feel like groundhog day.
But unfortunately, I was unable to finish this. I DNF'ed at 60% because of many things:
The many, many typos, grammatical errors, spelling errors, wrong words used... It feels like I'm reading a rough draft of a book. In the prologue alone, I noticed a number of mistakes. (I know it's difficult as an author, I know I'm not perfect but if a book is being published, I feel like this should be a bare minimum). One or two, I could let it slide but this was too much.
Additionally, there was a whole lot of... nothing happening for the most part. It was overly repetitive. The only places the characters were mostly in were their home, occasionally the magic library, or some form of bar. The world is a massive place, there are so many places you could choose from?
The characters were lacking in personality. I feel like you could substitute any one of their names and it would be the same person. There is also a part where one of the girls is following her sister around a hospital while she is dealing with her patients and that just... would never happen. Patient confidentiality and all. I don't think the patients would like the healthcare professional's sister tagging along as they talk about their health issues/get treated.
Gideon was just... there. His only purpose was to be the MMC. There was nothing about him, he was just there? And apparently saying darling and love instantly makes someone British which....ok. But he doesn't have any reason for existing up until this point other than to hit on Cordelia constantly and say "darling" in every line and be saying things like "I know you" after like knowing someone for not very long at all, acting like they're besties.
Moreover, the dialogue was so... dry. Every joke was the same in a different font. Most conversations went like this:
“wow you’re so __”
“No I’m not.”
"Yes you are."
They laughed.
or
“your x of x is questionable”
“My x of x is the right one.”
But like... every. Single. Conversation. Just framed slightly differently but it's the same. It's monotonous, robotic and just painful for me to read.
I wish the author and publisher all the best for publication. I genuinely wanted to see how this would end but I physically can't force myself to finish this book when I'm not having a good time at all. Thank you for the ARC and again, best of luck with everything!

This is based off an advanced readers copy.
This was a 2.5 for me. It was not bad by all means. I just had some issues that frustrated me while reading. First for anyone that enjoyed a certain tv show in the 90s about 3 witches, this will definitely give you some nostalgia. 3 sister witches, all names starting with a “c”, who are the predestined “chosen ones” and are set to fight the almighty source of evil. Ringing any bells. They even all live together, and have very similar personality traits, with the mediator that bakes and does potions, the prideful one that thinks she has to do everything, and the baby of the group who is flirtatious and known to be impulsive. Now as being a resounding fan of the tv show I did enjoy some of the tie ins but also couldn’t help myself from constantly comparing it as well. I wanted to fall in love with this book, but there were some issues that caused my lower rating.
- Consistency throughout the book. There were moments like she goes to a penthouse and steps off the elevator into the house. The next visit she knocks on a door. The first time the main charter meets the main male character she tells him all about her dad. Later on they meet again and she explains it again. It broke the story for me.
- Charters. We’re are shown very early on some of their surface level tendencies. Other than those first interactions everything else felt very superficial. I just didn’t fall in love with them. Really any of them, so when the twist hit at the end, it didn’t surprise or hit me like it should. Cordelia the main female I found actually annoying at times - with her either going in power witch mode or moving to the complete opposite side of the spectrum in pure sloth mode. And for being a therapist she is absolutely horrible at reading herself or being self aware.
- the witch hunt. Much of the book simply moved for moment to moment for me, it didn’t immerse you like I hoped it would. You simply followed the trail of events. And one of those events was so lack luster. A night to hunt demon. Except they go out and they vanquish a whole one demon. Like for the building up and the tension they built around the night it fell flat.
Overall, I personally will not be continuing the story.

The positives- the mmc, Gideon, is a super tall shadow daddy. There is a spicy scene in a magical library. That was cool.
The rest of it just didn’t hit for me. The main characters are three sisters who are born into a family dynasty of witches, but they are “the chosen ones” for some reason. They fight demons. Their dynamic actually annoyed me. Their interactions were so repetitive. In fact, there is a LOT of repetition in this story. The mmf, Cordelia, tells Gideon about her father twice, in two different scenes. Her friend Theresa, who inexplicably knows more about witch lore than her actual witch friends, keeps showing up with sack-fulls of more ancient witch texts for days and days. Gideon calls Cordelia “darling” in like every sentence.
Cordelia is actually awful. She acts as the martyr of her family. She almost leaves a planned meetup with Gideon because he is THREE MINUTES late. I don’t know what this man sees in her. One scene that stuck out as weird to me is when she is bored so she is somehow able to follow her nurse sister around the hospital for 2 hours while she is seeing patients. That isn’t a thing.
Overall, I didn’t grow to care about the characters in this story. I won’t be reading the next installment of this series.

Cordelia is actually awful. She acts as the martyr of her family. She almost leaves a planned meetup with Gideon because he is THREE MINUTES late. I don’t know what this man sees in her. One scene that stuck out as weird to me is when she is bored so she is somehow able to follow her nurse sister around the hospital for 2 hours while she is seeing patients. That isn’t a thing.
Overall, I didn’t grow to care about the characters in this story. I won’t be reading the next installment of this series.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this as Jasmine Ahmad is a new-to-me author, but I was definitely down for a dark romantasy with magic. Unfortunately, this one fell a little flat for me.
I was incredibly interested in the story of the main girls and their bloodline, the quests they go through to keep their lineage protected, and finding answers as to why they have to. That part of the story really pulled me in and had me wanting to know more. However, the romance fell flat for me. I didn’t really see the yearning or build-up between Gideon and Cordelia, so when they suddenly started becoming romantic, it felt like it came out of nowhere.
There also felt like there were quite a few loopholes and unanswered questions left throughout the story, especially when it came to Alaric, certain details surrounding Theresa, and some of the other elements of the plot. The cliffhanger ending also makes me assume there will be another book, so hopefully some of those questions will be answered there.
Ultimately, I think I would have rated this book higher if it wasn’t marketed as a romantasy. The fantasy and magic aspects had me interested, but because the romance felt lacking for me, it didn’t quite deliver what I was hoping for from the genre.

Oh, how I much ADORE Jasmine’s writing! In The Chosen Ones, we follow three sisters, Cordelia, Cassie, and Callie. From the moment they are born, they are defined as the Chosen Ones and have had to face uncertainty all their lives. All three of them are grieving the loss of their mother, who sacrificed herself to protect witches, leaving the three sisters to grieve while also having so many unanswered questions.
We follow Cordelia, the oldest sister, who finds herself feeling protective and overly responsible for her two younger sisters. Over time, she eventually realizes that she has to allow them to have power and independence in their own decisions.
The three sisters are immediately faced with demons who are trying to harm them, while also having to face a terrible prophecy about a powerful demon who is hunting them down and trying to kill them. We see the three sisters grow into their powers while also having to be cautious about who they trust.
Don’t get me started on the ending! I could sense the betrayal coming and even made my own predictions, but I was definitely surprised! Jasmine, please don’t play with my HEART!! I can’t wait to see what comes next for the Jimenez sisters!!

While this was definitely a slow burn, the connection between Gideon and Cordie was so good. Their chemistry and the way their relationship developed had me completely intrigued. I honestly couldn’t put this book down! 👀📖
There were definitely a few parts where I got a little scared (LOL) .. when they was playing the board game. let’s just say I was 👀😳. It probably didn’t help that I was reading this at night, and now it’s literally midnight while I’m writing this review. 😂 I kept thinking I was hearing things! 🫣🤣
I’m already looking forward to Book 2 because I have SO many questions. I need to know who’s who, what’s really going on, and I’m definitely hoping for a redemption chapter! 👀

This story follows three sisters who are basically born into the role of being the “Chosen Ones,” while also grieving their mother, learning more about their powers, and dealing with demons who very much want them dead.
The whole thing gave me strong early-Charmed energy — magical sisters, demons, family drama, mysterious men, prophecy, and lots of fast-moving supernatural chaos. That nostalgia was probably my favorite part of the book.
For me, though, it moved a little too quickly in places. I wanted more time to really get attached to the characters before the danger, romance, and bigger emotional moments started piling on. The romance especially went from 0 to 100 much faster than I usually prefer, because I am apparently incapable of enjoying anything without a ridiculous amount of yearning first. 😂
Still, this was a quick, fun paranormal fantasy, and I can absolutely see it working for readers who love magical sisterhood stories, demons, instant romance, and that slightly campy supernatural-TV vibe.

Ok guys think Salem Witch Trials, witchy vibes with 3 modern witches that are sisters and an unknown prophesy. The bond between these sisters was awesome, they were sassy and bratty and all had their own personalities which was great. ALSO, these girls are in their 20-30s which was so awesome to read and not a bunch of 17 year olds (sorry millennial here 🤣🤷♀️)!

This one was nostalgic, total Charmed vibes!
The magic system is instantly familiar and the language recognisable which makes it easy to jump straight into.
I loved the storyline, though I predicted the main twists early on. The relationships between the sisters felt authentic and I enjoyed the dynamic, including the little snipes and dramas that are instantly relatable.
The romance part of the story was a bit tougher. I didn’t feel the slow burn. I would’ve loved more narrative to build the tension so I could feel invested in the journey between the MCs.
That all said, the story was enjoyable and fun. The ending left things unresolved so I’d be intrigued to see where things go next!

Loved the Sabrina the Teenage witch vibe of the book where the plot was focused around a family of witches and book of spells (minus the talking cat, sadly).
However, there were parts that felt clunky and very insta love. Also super repetitive and then the book just ended.
I did like the FMC and all the sister’s interactions!
Lastly, all the references to Seattle didn’t totally add up to reality, which bugged me.

I genuinely enjoyed every minute of this read. It was magical , funny , cute & adventurous. It does have some spice that I wasn’t expecting that honestly had me kicking my feet even harder than the funny romantic banter between love interests. The setting gives 100% cozy vibes & I would LOVE to visit this world in real life.

Witches and demons took me back to when I would watch Charmed before school, on TV.
Not only that but im super close with my siblings, so I could resonate with Cordelia and the care she had for her sister's. Things really started picking up on the second half the book, so much I was shook by the ending 🙊
