This cozy fantasy debut absolutely stole my heart! From the delightful characters, to the magical creatures, to the charming setting, I adored Farah's Familiars!
Set in a queer-normative world in the small town of Ferndell, the story features Farah, a neurodivergent halfling witch who works at a cozy cafe. Since being abandoned by her coven for her lack of magical abilities, Farah has struggled with self esteem and feeling worthy. Even the kindness of her neighbours is difficult for Farah to accept.
At its deepest level, this is a story about healing from a traumatic event, and establishing a sense of safety and belonging. Farah's journey is bittersweet and compelling. As she learns to take risks and allow herself to be vulnerable, she is met with so much support and understanding from others in her community. The cast of characters is wonderful!
I found this story incredibly heartwarming, and am so excited to read the next book in the series!

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of this book from the author. Here is my honest review:
This book is just an absolute delight. It really lives up to the cosy fantasy name. All of the characters are adorable, and the relationships between them are so dang cute.
I was genuinely giggling and kicking my feet the whole way through, and I loved Rune and Farrah’s friendship. The yearning was so palpable, and I’m obsessed with them.
The whole town has such a found family vibe that I want to move there immediately. Just let me pack my things.
If you want an adorable cosy fantasy, with an adorable sapphic romance, this book is absolutely for you!

Farah's Familiars by Holland E. Armeta is a sweet and cozy story about a neurodivergent witch coming into her powers and struggling to open up to others. After a traumatic youth, Farah has a difficult time accepting love and help from others. She has low self-worth and fears abandonment. She is kind and a bit naive. The small town of Ferndell has embraced her, but she doesn't realize it and still feels like an outcast.
Rune, a ratkin tinkerer, also had a traumatic childhood and finds a kindred spirit in Farah. They spend time together and awkwardly become something a little more than friends.
To Farah's surprise, she is suddenly able to hear animals talking, and they seek her out for help. The talking animals are really the stars of the show here. I love them all. My favorite character is Nova, the winged cat. She has such a great personality and is super cute! Kai is pretty sweet too. I really enjoyed the familiar matchmaking storyline.
I think that the story could have benefited from a prologue with a bit of Farah's backstory. Some details of her past are revealed throughout, but I would have liked that info upfront.
All of the characters are unique and likable, and the plot is fun. This book is short and sweet and even gave me a few chuckles. It has a satisfying ending that makes for a great beginning to the series. I'd love to read more in this world.
P.S. I love the cover, and it suits the story well.

A cozy fantasy about a halfling named Farah. Farah spends her days after a traumatic abandonment serving her small town in the Kofi shop. When her parent figure that took her in tells her one day that she is leaving the Kofi shop to Farah it throws a wrench into her daily routine she has been used to living day in and day out. That is until some other cozy creatures make their way into her shop! This was so cozy and cute. I absolutely loved the authors take with creatures and small town vibes. It definitely has neurodivergent rep which it the best part about this story for me! Perfect for all the old school lovers who grew up watching cartoons and animations with creatures in them. If you are looking for that cozy nostalgic vibe, THIS BOOK IS IT! I received this ARC as a gift but these are my views and opinions.

When Farah hears the news of her boss retiring, she begins working with the local ratkin, Rune, to create a cozy space for the potential-familiars to live in while Farah tries to awaken her magic. It touches on some serious topics like abandonment, but the novella ties together really well at the end with a sense of found-family.

This was a super sweet, cozy little thing. The titular familiars, as they so often do, stole the show. All of the sass and unbridled excitement.
The book is absolutely a journey of self discovery and found family, though I will admit to being wildly annoyed at Farah at times mostly because I recognize the same struggles in me to leave behind what doesn’t serve you and embrace what you’ve found.
Overall, a hugely enjoyable read with endearing characters and so much promise for growth in this world and these relationships.

I am in love with this world and universe and all the characters and the amount of love coming from this book. I think it’s easy to tell when a book is written with so much love and care and this book definitely was, all the characters mattered and were important, the world was beautifully written and everything was just so sweet and cozy and warm.
I love small town tropes in books, I love when all the characters are so supportive of each other and truly care the most for each other, even if the main character doesn’t notice, it’s just so nice and warm and comforting. Not every book needs a mysterious or darker character, sometimes things truly can be all sunshine and rainbows and that’s what this world felt like, obviously characters had been mistreated in the past but somehow they’ve all ended up in one little town and can support each other.
The storyline for this book was adorable, kind of sad when you think about it but it’s not a sad book? I don’t think the main character (Farah) realizes how bad what happened to her was, so she has her own journey about that (trying not to spoil is so hard so sorry) The story focuses on Farah, a halfing taken in by dwarf Lissi after Farahs family coven abandoned her when she didn’t show any magical abilities. Farah and Lissi work and live in ‘Kafi’ shop Ambrewsia, serving the local community with baked goods and Kafi, Farah goes on an errand and finds an injured cat near some bins, after discovering the injured cat can talk to her, Farah takes it back to Ambrewsia in hopes Lissi can help take care of it. After that day multiple animals find their way to Farah and require help from her and Lissi, they become a solid family, it’s very cozy and adorable and so cute honestly it’s everything. Local builder / fixer upper, Rune ends up building a little barn for the animals to live in and her and Farah build up a really cute friendship while that’s all happening, they have the most adorable crush on each other it’s truly so cute and heartwarming, obviously both are incredibly stubborn around it, but I will say the ending is beautiful and adorable and everything that can be hoped for.
The overall storyline with Farah trying to be magical and find her power throughout the book is so cute but also so sad, she doesn’t think she’s good enough for anyone (understandable after being abandoned by your entire family I guess) and all she wants is to be magic so she can go back to them. There’s an overall lesson that you ARE good enough, magic or no, you are good enough, some people just suck and they don’t deserve you anyway. I loved that lesson, it’s not one I havent learned already but I know it could help a lot of people. I think younger people would also love this book, it’s so cozy and magical. I loved it too. THANK YOU!!

This book was so cozy, I’m a little upset with myself that I didn’t make a cup of tea first. I was hooked from the beginning and read it all in one go.
The neurodivergence rep in this story is top tier. I found myself in both Farah and Rhun, and it was incredibly refreshing to feel so seen. I knew it was going to be an excellent depiction from the moment Farah organized the pastries in the display. Be still my ND heart.
Nova is a gem and I would die for her, along with Kai and the other animals. They each have their own fantastic personalities. I do wish we got to see more of Ollis and the rabbits, though! Their presence felt a little rushed and gone too quickly. Also, I’m super hoping we get to read about a certain blue glowing creature I won’t name because of spoilers in the next book.
The budding feelings between Farah and Rhun made my chest do the aching thing and my romance-reading heart screamed “JUST KISS” multiple times. Ugh. I loved it.
Overall, this story is wonderful and I will absolutely be reading it again. Cozy? Yes. Delightful? Yes. Devourable? Yes. Highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good comfort read.

Farah was a deeply relatable character for me, especially with people not sticking to the 'script' in her head throwing her off and her struggles with change. Farah desperately wants to connect with her magic, in the belief that her biological family will re-accept her if she does. However, along the way Farah starts to realise how much the people in her community mean to her, and how much she means to them.
Rune was also a really great character. I liked how they seemed shy at first, but then opened up to Farah about their past, and were so incredibly grateful for Farah's friendship.
The familiars were also incredibly adorable and I loved them so much, especially Nova and Kai. They all had really distinct personalities and it was so sweet how they interacted with Farah and the community around them.
This was fantastic as a standalone book, with the character development and narrative wrapped up in a very satisfying way. That being said, I'm also very excited for the second book, which I hope will have more relationship progression between Farah and Rune.

Farah's Familiars was a quick and cozy read that gave me the exact relaxed and warming vibes that I wanted it to.
While still touching upon some heavier topics like family abandonment and struggles with self worth, this book doesn't lose it's upbeat attitude and cuteness to the darker elements.
I found all the familars that visit the cafe really fun and cute, and especially loved Kai for his bubbly and frantic energy. If an animal can have ADHD, that fox had it!
I really liked Farah as a FMC. Her self doubts and insecurities really brought her to life and I think her struggle to accept people actually wanted her around was very realistic and relatable. I really appreciated how caring she was of all the animals, happy to accept them even if it would cause extra strain to herself.
Really cute start to a new cozy fantasy world and I look forward to seeing what else this author does.

This was a wonderfully heartfelt cozy fantasy, filled with cute familiars and a lovely found family. Though this story was short, the characters were well-developed and there was a clear plot. I enjoyed reading Farah's character arc and found her struggles to find her place in the world relatable. I enjoyed reading Farah's character arc and found her struggles to find her place in the world relatable. Farah's Familiars invites you into a wholesome and cozy world, but in a short format that leaves the reader satisfied yet hungry for more story, along with a cup of hot chocolate or tea. The normative representation and relatable character struggle form a compelling fantasy setting that still feels true to life. Holland E. Armeta does a phenomenal job of gripping you to your core, smiling giddily from the cuteness of it all while you're anxiously rushing to the ending driven by suspense. All in all, it was a perfect read after a stressful day, and I could not recommend it enough.

Cozy fantasy with zero spice, short format and beautiful development. Despite the short structure, the author has managed to develop the characters and give them realistic completeness. Farah and Rune find their place and growth in small Ferndell. The common features between them build a strong bond and lead to the insight that family is not always blood and genes, sometimes it is an invisible thread that connects hearts and souls inextricably.

Farah’s familiars are now familiar to me and I’m delighted. Five stars for all the cozy, happy feelings I got reading this. Farah is an outsider, never feels like she belongs, but she hopes if she can find a way to unlock her magic, her coven will take her back and she will have family again. But she realizes she’s leaving behind her true family, the best family, for a family that cast her off. A beautiful intersection of what it means to belong, identity, and what you accept.

'Farah's Familiars: A Creature Cafe' is a delightful fantasy book that had me hooked from start to finish. The characters and their chemistry together felt well thought out and very natural in the story, and the struggles Farah, Rune, and so many other characters have feel real and relatable. I really loved the lore of the world the book takes place in, and how the magic inside it works!
I also really appreciated the representation of neurodiversity and queer relationships in the story, it made me feel so connected to some of these characters, and it was just lovely to read in that regard. The writing style and dialog were both easy to read and felt fitting for the universe they were in as well.
Overall I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy fun fantasy book about finding your way in the world.
