My dream has always been to live in a little cabin in the woods with at least ten dogs. After reading this? Let me clarify: I want peaceful, cuddly, store-bought-kibble (emphasis on this) dogs—not a bloodthirsty pack trained to hunt humans like chew toys.
That said… I loved this book.
This man builds his own little Eden: off-grid, surrounded by forest, bonded with his dogs. But what he sees as paradise quickly becomes someone else’s worst nightmare. It’s a twisted, feral meditation on survival, dominance, and how far someone will go to protect what they love.
This is the perfect example of how one person’s heaven can absolutely be someone else’s hell.
It’s Lesley, so check your triggers…this is extreme horror. Brutal, graphic, and absolutely feral in the best way. And that epilogue? Omg yes. Just when you think it’s done—no. She sinks nails it and now I need more!
That said… I loved this book.

This was a grisly little affair. Very straightforward and downright nasty, dealing with bestiality, rape, breeding, kidnapping and torture, and the list goes on. However, it was all balanced and put together quite nicely. Our lead, David, is just one sick puppy. I would have liked some additional context on his mindset throughout, not much needed, but just a little bit more to bring it all together. But this story is like watching a horrible car accident. You don't want to look but can't look away. Shockingly, there wasn't an overabundance of detail with certain scenes, but it was made very clear what was happening, which was fine by me. At 6 AM on a Monday morning, I really don't know if my stomach can handle certain plot points like what was contained in this book. Very good, very bloody, and very much aimed towards fans of extreme horror.

THE HUNTED HOUR (2025) Lesley A. Camphouse
My Review Five Stars
Recently I have tapped into a vein of horror shorts that are either grounded in philosophy or steeped in psychology. This hardcore horror novella by popular Indie author Lesley A. Camphouse falls into the second scintillating category. First, I am not a stranger to Camphouse’s chilling aptitude for churning out genuinely horrifying tales while using an economy of words to execute the task. She is quite prolific and I have been a fan since her “Communion Duet” Ingest Me (book 1), Ingest Me, Too (book 2) . I also read the second story from her “Apex Prey” trilogy, her collaboration Restoring the Balance and Support Buddy . That said, I fell in love with The Hunted Hour beginning with the chilling yet classy Cover Design by the author. I was intrigued by the Author Notes in which she acknowledged that this tour de force was written within a week to ten days. But what truly triggered my curiosity was her casual reference to how this story was born. Camphouse stated that she and her husband were just “discussing things…” I posted a question to the author asking what prompted the germination of this highly original premise and utterly chilling concept. She hasn’t responded but she is both popular and prolific with nearly thirty titles online.
The Hunted Hour hit all the right notes and struck all the right chords with me. I found this hardcore horror novella to be intellectually stimulating. The central character of David is a fascinating psychological study. This well-written, shockingly sordid, sexually explicit, and hopelessly heartless tale is at its chilling core the story of a 10-year-old boy and his Jack Russell puppy. David was not just another morally bankrupt villain perpetrating a series of atrocities on helpless victims. Admittedly I would have been keenly intrigued by a more detailed backstory but this horror short was limited by a length of 112 pages.
I have had a lifelong keen interest in the concept of “empathy”, and it is likely relevant that I disclose a background in psychology. It would be difficult to throw a softball into a packed arena of extreme horror fans and not land the ball amidst a group of readers who are fascinated with the study of serial killers. Camphouse’s unopposed ruthless antagonist (David) intrigued me to a high degree but not particularly because he was by definition a serial kidnapper and killer who tortured his hapless victims. The character of David was a puzzle box to me, and I found my mind wandering down different avenues of exploration. I reread the backstory of a 10-year-old boy who loved his young Jack Russell pup “Tank”. I scrutinized the interactions closely to confirm that the prepubescent David was devoid of any hint of cognitive empathy. The boy was intelligent and observant enough to comprehend that his father was angry and emotionally upset by the events which transpired. He effectively adopted a feigned posture which was replete with untruths and “crocodile tears”.
This horror short is a high octane read with its original premise and chilling concept. The underlying psychology of the main character, a young man who from an early age demonstrates a strong attraction, if not unadulterated adoration, for animals and a distinct disdain for humans is intriguing. His case becomes more than just curious and interesting when we know that David’s inclination to love animals more than people does not exist in a void. He is a sociopath with a complete absence of “empathy” …for his fellow humans, that is.
Factually, it is clear that a human’s empathy for animals may not consistently equate to empathy for humans. Our “animal loving” David, for instance…is there any indignity, deprivation, pain, torture, psychological game, or horror that he did not impose upon his helpless human prey? This story delivers as many helpings as possible of hardcore blood and gore and could fill a dozen horror shorts. Hitler and his Nazi buddies are perhaps the most jaw-dropping example of animal lovers heartlessly annihilating their fellow man.
Finally, for me this outing by Camphouse was a ruthless, riveting read, both intellectually stimulating and just about the most disturbing short work I have read this year. I really applauded the author’s decision to use First-Person POV and David’s introspection and observations are the fodder for a really “flocked” up tale of a young man’s dominion in the isolated land, and his beautiful canine companions living the “Life of Riley” with their devoted “Daddy” David.
“Good girl,” I whisper lovingly Let’s find out where they went, shall we, Comet?” The dog looks up at me, ears perked, her brown eyes bright, nose wet, and her fur shiny. I absolutely adore my dogs, my pack. I take better care of them, than I do myself...
But that’s the thing---I absolutely hate people, but my dogs…They are my life.

Disturbing, Unnerving, Horrifying and Intense. These are the words that sums up this book. This book explores the deep levels of depravity and the gory horror filled scenes are forever embedded in my brain.
This book is about a man named David who by all rights makes Ed Gein seem like a saint. Don’t let the short pages fool you this book is packed with violence and a feeling of immerse dread. Please be mindful of your triggers.

David is a kid who enjoys teaching his dog tricks. One of those tricks includes attacking and mauling his sister. After his parents take his crazed dog to the shelter he snaps. That night he kills his sister.
His parents have a feeling it was him but he makes them believe it wasn’t. He ends up getting his dog back from the pound. After he gets his partner in crime back he is satisfied for the moment. Something tragic happens and he leaves his hometown in search of a better place to live.
After finding a secluded piece of land in the middle of nowhere, he starts buying more dogs. Dogs he can train to do exactly what his dog Tank did to his little sister. Attack. Bite. Destroy. Kill.
He has one problem though. His dogs don’t have chew toys at their disposal and David will do everything in his power to make sure his dogs are able to have as much fun as he will watching them destroy human lives. As time goes by he becomes more unhinged and begins kidnapping women to breed them. But breed them for what? Will he find a wife or are they just toys for him as well?
This book was insane. The premise was wild. I was honestly speechless at a couple parts and my mouth fell open reading one specific part. If you have any sort of triggers please check the trigger list the author provides at the beginning of her book. If you enjoy unhinged male characters who have no boundaries or morals look no further. Lesley always delivers.

Isolated from civilization and normalcy, The Hunted Hour follows a man as he separates himself from society to live off-grid with his pack of dogs. Sickened and disgusted by other humans, his accumulated canine counterparts become his only solace. His collection of hounds, however, have been nurtured well and taught to kill. In his woodland abode, our protagonist constructs a veritable kingdom of blood, a prison for any unlucky escort or trespasser. With a plan to breed his unfortunate captives, the depravity increases by the chapter, bringing about fertile ground for a sick mind.
This is a short but intense tale with great flow and story development. The protagonist is like Josef Fritzl on steroids, leading to a cavalcade of disturbing and extreme scenes, each one pushing you further and further with the nastiness. Camphouse does a stellar job as always, taking you to a dark place, and then putting the thumbscrews to your sanity! Bravo! She has a real knack also for dangling hope for characters before your eyes, only to rip it away, as quickly as our protagonist's dog army rips through throats. The short but punchy Epilogue is also brilliant, and gave me a good chuckle after enduring all the mayhem! Breathtaking and extreme. A hardcore offering with plenty of (canine) teeth! Top work!

ARC Review — Extreme Horror Alert 🚨🐕💀

That line alone should’ve been my first red flag. But did I stop? Of course not. I thought, hey, one quick dark read before bed—what’s the worst that could happen?
Lesley has clearly been busy—churning out more gory, unhinged horror than I can poke a stick at. And this one? Feral. Twisted. Disturbingly addictive.
Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Wrong Turn, this story was a wild ride. I found the character development was balanced perfectly, enhancing the story without overshadowing the intense plot.
The whole “breeding dogs and hunting down fertile women to breed" concept had me side-eyeing my own pets and questioning my morals (lets just say this is why ive got cats and not feral dogs)
Don't get me wrong i love all animals cats mostly and dogs, but Lesley really put the fear of dogs in me after reading this.
From the very first page, the tension was palpable, and Lesley's descriptions of each woman's ordeal of being stranded on David's farm with no help in sight was terrifyingly real.
From prostitutes down on their luck, who should have known better, to hikers and campers trespassing literally had me on edge, and for such a short novel i could clearly feel their fear and desperation.
The fast-paced narrative kept me on the edge of my seat, creeping me out and making me feel uneasy at the same time.
It’s dark, gritty, and absolutely wrong in all the right places. Its the kind of story that makes you feel a little guilty for enjoying it... but not guilty enough to put it down.
When you finally reach the end you'll be horrified, slightly traumatized, but already reaching for Lesley’s next nightmare....I, for one am ready!
Another amazing extreme horror novella, Lesley, and i highly recommend to people who love their horror extreme or just love Lesley ❤️

Lesley, my queen of extreme horror is once again proving she’s not just here to scare you, she’s here to test your limits.
⚠️ Yup… definitely a little monstrosity of a book (pun fully intended). And yeah, I’m with David, 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 > 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲. (Not 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍, obviously, let’s not get feral about it 😅).
The Hunted Hour is visceral, vile, and absolutely brilliant in its brutality. It crawls beneath your skin and sets up camp there. This isn’t your average horror, it’s a slow, psychological torture chamber disguised as fiction. You’ll flinch, you’ll gag, you’ll whisper “nope” out loud and then you’ll keep reading anyway.
Also… Lesley, babe, WTF do you have against siblings?! 😂😂 Like seriously, are you okay?? (No, don’t answer that, keep writing like this.)

I’m always here for EVERYTHING Lesley writes! The "kennel" isn’t some cute little farm, people. It’s a twisted breeding ground where women are raised just to be hunted by a sick, depraved psycho and his pack of dogs. It’s insane, it’s disturbing, and it’s so damn good. The hunt is on, and every single second feels like you're teetering on the edge of something epic and completely screwed up.

A story about a man who uses dogs as his murder weapon. They are his only love in this world and he keeps them well trained and well fed. He keeps to himself in the woods and invents a hunting game for him and his dogs using women as the prey.
This story is very dark and disturbing. I liked the epilogue which begs the possibility for more which I love and we also see mention of a recurring Camphouse character which I also love and it becoming a staple in some of her works which is awesome.
The scenes are graphic, the MC lacks empathy and remorse and any emotion except for his love for his dogs. Reading about dogs being the main force of torture and used as killers was new to me.
Another great story from Camphouse and I can’t wait to see if there’s more!

Camphouse!!! Where to even start.! There hasn’t been one book I haven’t enjoyed by her!
Having the privledge of reading this masterpeice before its release was amazing.
Disturbing, Horrific, fucking intense are all the words that make this book what it is, Packed with with violence and pure hate.
A demented kid turned into an even worse adult we love it but the love for his dogs is unmatched!
If you ever come across a naked women and trailing dogs. Pack up and mind your business.

Okay I cannot get enough of Lesley Camphouse. This book was so different but so good.
Dogs love to hunt right? So what better way to have a whole pack of dogs to hunt!
This man started young with his obsession of making a dog hunt so he knew what he was doing, he knew how to make them attack and shred something to pieces!

Another fantastic read from Lesley. While it was a short novella, she managed to capture and keep my interest from the start. While this one didn’t have a “twist” like her others, it was still incredibly interesting and fun to read.

The Hunted Hour – Lesley A. Camphouse
This little novella is WILD and its my new favourite by Lesley A. Camphouse... Why? because not only does it give us an extremely horrible, gory story, but it also gives us an insight into the history of the main character, it doesn’t go into WHY he does what he does, it shows us the growth of his dislike of people, or more importantly mostly of the female variety. He remains a character that I still have lots of questions about... and i like the curtain that is carefully draped over the questions this book leaves me with.
He’s a main character that basically lives my dream, he lives in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the woods, the wilderness, and on his plot of land he builds a self sustainable property. Not only for himself, but for his dogs. This man loves his dogs, more than people... which i find highly relatable. Its what goes on at his little slice of heaven that is so horrific. He uses people as chew toys for his dogs... it does get gross, and it does leave pictures of gore splashed behind your eyelids. I don’t think I will ever stop thinking about this book, the way that he turns his self sustainable paradise into a breeding farm, not for dogs.... but for captive females that are on the cusp of the forgotten, the women that nobody cares about. There is no redemption, there is only gore, horror and lore. It's a gruesome and the perfect little pallet cleanser. 🥴

For such a short book, The Hunted Hour sure does pack an intense punch! Lesley A. Camphouse has done it again with another unsettling and disturbing tale, but absolutely no surprise there!
The Hunted Hour follows our protagonist David who becomes the ultimate dog trainer, but uses this skill set in the most horrifying way.
This was an extremely violent and brutal read, and I absolutely loved it!! I was hooked from the get go and was on the edge of my seat wondering how it was going to end.
I absolutely adore Camphouse's writing style as her imagery is wonderfully vivid, you can not help but squirm and flinch at the most horrific and gorey scenes! (big big fan of these scenes by the way!!!)
"I knew I had to end Tank’s suffering rather sooner than later. I owed him. " MY JAW WAS ON THE FLOOR MY GOD IYKYK!!!
For how evil and psychopathic David was as a character, I was extremely happy that he treated his dogs like kings! I applaud Camphouse for their writing, allowing readers to feel this way towards someone who definitely does not deserve any sympathy or empathy.
I may be the red flag here, but I too resonate with David as I hate people and adore animals..

The Hunted Hour is short, fast-paced and intense. We meet David when he was a kid, he loves his dog more than humans. His little sister is his first plaything and sort of “toy” for his dog. When David becomes an adult, he moves to the woods and builds his playground, his heaven full of dogs.
As always with Lesley’s books, this was a wild ride with a lot of violence and gore, so please check your TW. This journey was extreme, nerve wrecking and haunting. David’s “games” had me looking at my kindle dumbfounded because what the hell was that? David is a sadist, he enjoys, he LOVES watching people suffer, women mostly, and he is very creative to come up with his games. One day one of his girls gets to escape, or so she thinks, but the dogs are merciless, the best hunters. Our girl never stood a chance.
Lesley’s writing is getting better and better and more unhinged than ever, she creates such rich and depraved characters and universes, you just want to read them all, this novella is no different. And the epilogue? YES TO EVERYTHING!! The way I screamed when I read it

Intense and brutal story!!!! I was at the edge of my seat for this extreme short horror story! I read this book super fast as I wasn’t able to stop on this one!!
David has shown signs of depravity from an early age and as he grows up, it’s only gotten worse. After his parents death, he buys a trailer to put in the middle of nowhere to live a more secluded life with his dogs. But, he soon realizes he wants to reproduce and has to find woman to do this with.
Some people keep their dogs in kennels, but David finds a better solution for his kennels.
This story is dark, disturbing and twisted, in the best way!
I was lucky to get an arc of this amazingly written, and very graphic story!! This author is one of my must reads!!

Lesley doesn’t shy away from darkness and if you are familiar with her work it might not come as a surprise that she has the ability to write brutally dark and twisted stories that will edge themselves into your brain. These tales are not for the faint hearted and with each new story she finds a way to make my face scrunch up and mutter things like “damn” and “holy sh*t”. Just when I think I’ve read it all, I clearly haven’t. I’m ready for that all girls road trip now! ;)

Reading through the first portion of it, I thought it was going to be tamer (no pun intended) in comparison to other works that I’ve read by her. I had a false sense of security that unlike her previous works, I was safe to use my imagination, and actually visualize the scenes that were playing out. It wasn’t until I got to the “tar scene” that I realized I was wrong. Reading through it, I was reminded why it takes me so long to read Extreme Horror, and it’s because the depravity, and violence is always described in such great detail that I often have to take breaks from reading due to being thoroughly unsettled... And Lesley A. Camphouse is undeniably a master at doing that. Also, DO NOT SKIP THE EPILOGUE!

In this book we follow David, a dog lover. He is so much of a dog lover that his mind has come to the point he can't stand people at all. Including his little sister and his parents.
David comes to a point when his parents take his childhood best friend Tank due to Davids hatred of human kind and his dormant evil impulses.
After Tank is taken, Davids story unravels a series of events that take us to the moment all these horrific accounts happen.
This story was perfect in the sense that was wrapped up very nicely but if Lesley wanted to release another book following the events I can see it being a thing.
I am a dog lover myself with a fluffy baby girl but I have never thought of doing or teaching my dog the things that David decides to teach to all these babies.

David, well... loves dogs. He prefers dogs to people and honestly can we blame him?
David takes better care of his dogs than he does himself or anyone else. They get fed purely raw meat. He even lets them hunt for their own food.
The only problem is, the meat that they hunt and consume is ... human.
This was sick and utterly brutal but so very good... the little easter egg right at the end made me so excited and if youve read any of Lesleys other works, you'll know why.

omg just wow. the brutality of David is so amazing. the fact that he breeds woman to feed his dogs. only keeps the girls and gets rid of the boys .
I would love to know what happens to those children. does he rasie them to have more children?

Absolutely Brutal! This gave me nightmares, check triggers!
Who doesnt want to live in a cabin the woods, isolated and surrounded by dogs....me after reading this! I started this in my bed and was up all night with nightmares of evil dogs!!
David is completely psychopath, even as a young child. When his parents die, he moves to said remote cabin and collects dogs...and women. What he does with these woman is brutal, graphic and sick! I loved it..well you know what i mean!
Please check triggers as this is very dark with horrific themes. If these dont bother you, get this added to your tbrs!

So that made me uncomfortable as hell. And for the first time I might want to reflect on calling all dogs "good boys". Jesus fucking christ, Camphouse.
Towards the end I really needed a breather, because YIKES. But pushing through (in a good way) rewarded me with the BEST epilogue ever!! I grinned like a maniac and I cannot waitttt for the follow-up!
