This book is a summary of my life. Sounds simple enough, but it was not simple to write. I am an alcoholic and a drug addict, I am also a nurse. I lost everything to my drug addiction. I stole my drugs from the hospital where I worked and when they found out my downfall began. But that is only the beginning. My recovery is the real story. There is a huge and growing problem of alcohol and drug addiction among healthcare professionals. It’s time we started talking about it. We put our patients and coworkers at risk. We put ourselves at risk. The problem is taboo and nobody wants to talk about it. I want to talk about it. I want to help stop this insidious disease from continuing to infect our entire healthcare system.
This memoir reminded me of Nurse Jackie on Showtime.
What I did not understand about this memoir was the author using her name as Nora. When here, on Amazon, and on her website it states her name is Kristin. There could have been a reason for this, and I skimmed by it. This whole book is written in third person perspective. But all of it was Kristin's actual life and memories.
Kristin shares her struggle with alcoholism that then spirals into a drug addiction as well. She was a nurse who was secretly dipping into drugs from her job. We watch her hit her all time low while sitting in prison. That was her wake up call and allowed her to become the bet version of herself.
It is always nice to get to the end of a memoir like this and see success for the author. Kristin now has her nursing license back, an amazing relationship with her daughters/family, is happily married, founded a non-profit organization, and is living her best life. Bravo Kristin!
"And so began the next chapter of her life. If she were to title it, perhaps “Ignoring Warning Signs” would be a good one."
It doesn't matter your profession, your religion, your wealth and status...anyone can fall into that demon called addiction. We hurt so much sometimes and we are fearful deep inside. How can I get rid of this pain? Well opioids sure do help and feel great at the beginning but like alcohol and heroin, this only works for a short period of time until suddenly that substance is controlling your life. It leads to desperation. We must get our medicine by any means possible. Read this book if you want more understanding. I loved the book and will be reading it again.
