TENACIOUS YOUNG OUTCAST IN HOSTILE LAND … DESPERATE FEDERATION AGENTS … BATTLE OF WITS.

“Continues the engrossing post-apocalyptic saga begun in the first book.” – D Donovan, Midwest Book Review

After tuning one’s ear to the rhythm of the swamps, any stray noise gets adrenaline flowing. The peace has shattered. They’re coming for Regina Shen.

Perfect for fans of the Hunger Games, Divergent, and Maze Runner. Regina Shen: Vigilance is the second book in a science fiction thriller series with an ordinary yet strong young woman facing extraordinary hurdles with tenacity.

The World Federation condemned Regina and her family to live on the seaward side of barrier walls as outcasts. Those walls were built to hold back rising seas caused by abrupt climate change. For two years Regina struggled with guilt over failing to rescue her younger sister. Under a tough teacher, she trained hard, salvaged illegal books from the depths, and committed them to memory. Another storm bears down. It’s time for Regina to cross the barrier wall into the Federation to hunt for her sister. Is she ready?

The Federation operates with a rigid caste system and the notorious Department of Antiquities. They keep peace and order by destroying all evidence from before the Great Collapse. World fertility is plunging. Chief Inspector Joanne Demarco pursues Regina for unique DNA that could prevent human extinction and boost the inspector’s power. Demarco has a ruthless rival who seeks to use Regina to overthrow the inspector. They both descend on Regina. She would rather die than help the people who kidnapped her sister.

Nothing goes according to plan for Regina. Pursued by agents, she becomes an illegal immigrant to the Federation, trying to avoid capture in a world suspicious of outsiders. As she gets closer to where the Federation holds her sister, Regina faces seemingly impossible obstacles. Guilt over failing her sister in the past urges her on. If she gets caught, Regina will be sent to an underground bio-lab never to see daylight, her family or friends again. When Regina thinks things can’t get worse, she learns that two rival inspectors are fighting to capture her and using her sister as bait.

Can Regina locate her sister and help her escape from an obvious trap without getting caught or killed?

Regina Shen: Vigilance is book two in a series by Lance Erlick. If you haven't read book one - Regina Shen: Resilience - I highly suggest you do before you start this one. It's a great story regardless, but you'll have to do a lot of catching up.

Since we left her at the end of book one, marginal Regina Shen has managed to avoid capture for over two years now, an amazing feat. Her own resourcefulness and that of her substitute mother and teacher Mo-Mere kept the searchers at bay, but there were many, many close calls. With a new mega-storm moving it, Mo-Mere decided it was time for Regina to sneak into the walled city, assume a new student identity and enter the university. This was a journey full of danger and if caught, Regina would be turned over to the local GOD (Grand Old Dame) who believed her blood held the solution to a fertility crisis. Then the rest of her life would play out as a lab rat.

Success meant assuming a life that Mo-Mere had tried to prepare her for, but her temperament was unsuited for. How could she pull off the part of a subservient, frightened Work Stiff allowed into university on scholarship? It required never asking questions, never standing up for yourself, never showing your intelligence and accepting the status quo. As a "swamp rat" who had lived by her wits her entire life, this proved increasingly impossible. There was no way to blend in and the clock was ticking. She couldn't pretend for long.

Regina was also there to try and rescue her sister who had been taken to a lab two year before, but the university was a guarded prison that let no one in and one out. The government had destroyed all maps and taken down all street signs. There was no listing of where the fertility labs were. How would she leave the school? Who could she trust to help? Where was the lab that held her sister? And last but not least, if she did succeed in freeing her, where could they go? There was no where to hide.

Book Review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/book-tou...

I previously read and reviewed the first book in the series, Regina Shen: Resilience, and after reading it, I looked forward to starting the second book in the series. Regina Shen: Vigilance takes place two years after the events of the first book.

Mo-Mere believes Regina is ready to jump the Barrier Wall, and start looking for her sister. After two years of training, studying and honing her survival skills, now is the time for Regina and Colleen to be reunited and to find some answers. Except, well, what did you expect, things don’t go as planned. For Regina, she’ll have to remain vigilant and find out who she can trust and who she can’t – but the same counts for the other characters too. DeMarco is still after her, and will do whatever it takes to capture her. Regina’s quest to find her sister brings her to university, close to where they’re holding her sister – but will she able to find her and save her?

I thought this book was more thrilling even than the first, and I already enjoyed that one a lot. The ending was very surprising, and I actually had to re-read it; I hadn’t expected some of the plot twists.

I loved Regina in the first book, but I liked her even more in this one. She’s grown as a person, she’s more determined than ever, and she knows how to keep her head cool in dangerous situations.

The new characters were an excellent addition too, especially Ester. A solid sequel to the first book, and a great addition to the series. Can’t wait to read the final part.

The first book, Resilience was fine. I thought it had an alright pacing and the author did a good job of introducing me to this world and Regina. Yet with this second book I am thrilled to have read it. I was able to instantly connect with all of the characters better. So far I thought that this book was better than the first. Regina is shaping out to be a strong leader. Regina's hunt for her sister, Colleen brings her even closer in this book. With Mo-Mere's experience with the Federation she was the perfect teacher for Regina. Not that I doubt that Regina would not be able to survive on her own but her cover would have been blown a lot sooner if it had not been for Mo-Mere. Mo-Mere is like Yoda with her wisdom. This is a perfect reference as this series has that nice futuristic feel to it that fans of these types of books will enjoy.

In the first book I learned about the Federation but in this book I actually got to really see what the Federation is really all about. The change in scenery was nice. Instantly I could picture all of the locations In addition, I like that there are the main staple characters so I can keep that established relationship with them while getting to meet some new ones like Ester. Although at time I was a little frustrated with Ester she came off meek. Yet as the story went on, Regina's strength did rub off on Ester. I can't wait to read the third book in this series to see if Regina will be able to take down the Federation.

I quite like the main character in this series. She never gives up and has a strong moral compass. Some of the other characters however, are annoying in their weakness and constant clinginess. I keep waiting to see how the protagonist is going to make a big difference in this world. There are hints but it is slow going. Still, the overall story is compelling and I will likely continue on with the series to see what impact she will have on this world.

*I received a free copy from the author for an honest review*

The adventure continues in the second book of the series too. But I found the pace not as good as the first book. I felt that there were scenes where it was a bit boring. Nevertheless, the author has done the book justice. The Federation, which was outlined in the earlier book has a more prominent place in this tale. The intricate politics involved in Regina's world is revealed in bits and pieces. The complete image has not been shown yet but I think I can now understand the direction of the series better after reading this book.

The plot gets more complicated with the addition of new characters and new plot twists. Regina's adventurous story continues with bumps and turns in the road. I was so sad about Wendy's situation. But it adds heart and reality to the book. As I said earlier, the pace was a bit slow and it flowed and ebbed throughout the tale. In certain places, I felt the events were unfolding too fast and I had to take a breather to get my mind around the scenes. But it was very thrilling and had me anticipating the next move.

The world of the Federation is as dry as the swamps are watery. The new characters add more depth to the series. Alice is such a psychotic character. I absolutely loved her in her madness. And then there's Ester. A romantic element to the series and for Regina?? I wasn't that comfortable with it. But it meshes with the book. After all, men are extinct. Which still boggles my mind. Demarco surprised me in a good way. I didn't expect that from her. She is an enigma in some ways and I sort of liked her in this book. And Colleen is so much more grown up than earlier because of her captivity. There's Regina's Mom with her various names who is still a mystery. I was intrigued by her actions in the first book and it has continued into this book. I can't wait to read more about her and her background.

So I am right now waiting for the next book in the series (Gimme-Gimme-Gimme!) and while I am twiddling my thumbs, I expect you guys to take a look at the book, especially those who love some adventure and action with a sci-fi and dystopian twist!

My one line review : Delve into Regina's world with more action and a tiny bit of romance(or is it?)!

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 4/5

In the first sequel of author Lance Erlick’s series featuring Regina Shen as protagonist, which critics have compared to other dystopian youth fiction such as the Hunger Games trilogy, two years of training have elapsed for Regina, after which she seeks to leap beyond the barrier into the World Federation in search of her sister Colleen, although fate has different plans in store for her. As in the book’s predecessor, the Federation has condemned Regina and her family to live outside the barriers sheltering the country from rising waters caused by climate change, with Regina avoiding capture during her training.

The Federation yearns to use Regina’s distinctive DNA in want of supposedly saving the human race from its downfall, although she would rather perish that assist those that kidnapped her sibling. Department of Antiquities Inspector Joanne Demarco continues her pursuit of Regina, although she has a new rival who wishes to use Regina to her own advantage. During her adventure, Regina consumes written word forbidden by the Federation, with her consequential distinctive knowledge making her something of an outcast to her peers, although it helps her reach a University beyond the walls, and she finds that life within the Federation isn’t necessarily any better than that outside.

Most of the sequel’s action occurs at the University, where Regina befriends a few Professors that shield her from the Department of Antiquities agents. Aside from Regina’s first-person narration, there are frequent third-person excerpts focusing on the rival Antiquities Investigators, which consequentially keep the story fresh, with the action very rarely letting down. Ultimately, the first Regina Shen sequel is a good one, with endearing heroes and villains, although there are occasional errors in the print version that the editor overlooked such as a reference to “the Demarco’s trunk,” and it can be easy to forget the characters certain nicknames refer to such as “Coarse-face.” Even so, the second book is easily recommended to fans of the first.

Regina is an outsider in a world that is run by Grand Old Dames (Gods) who have extended their lives for over 300 years. They eliminated men years before and control the population by restricting education and punishing free thinking. Regina and her family are ‘Marginals” who life in the swamps outside of the wall that keep the 'harmonious' citizens within the Federation.

Regina and her younger sister Colleen revealed blood work that could help with the growing infertility problems of the society. Colleen was captured two years before but Regina has managed to evade the Federation agents who have sought her. Now Regina starts her new life as a university student but she doesn’t blend in or make friends like she is supposed to.

Regina still refuses to see the bigger picture or acknowledge her ‘destiny’, as her swamp teacher, Mo-Mere, puts it. I can’t help but seeing Regina’s actions as selfish, with narrow focus and little concern for her friends and those who are trying to help her. I have to be honest that I found this annoying. I was glad to note that as this book nears the end it appears that Regina is finally growing up and acknowledging the consequences effecting others. I liked the new characters who help Regina in this episode and I think the difficult positions of Regina’s ‘enemy’, Federal Agent DeMarco, adds an interesting dynamic.

This is book two in this YA, dystopian series. The pacing of the story is good. The society is all female and some of the relationships are leaning into the lesbian genre although there is nothing overt at this point. I really appreciated the author’s expressions regarding government control through limiting truth, education and discouragement of free thinking. I am not enthralled but I do find the series engaging. I am curious where the author will be taking Regina, DeMarco and the story.

I received this title for an honest review during series tour.

Lance Erlick in his new book, “Regina Shen: Vigilance” Book Two in the Regina Shen series published by Finlee Augare Books continues the adventure with Regina Shen.

From the back cover: Abrupt climate change melted ice caps and flooded coasts. Outcast Regina Shen has unique DNA that the World Federation believes can prevent human extinction. Not trusting them, Regina jumps the barrier wall into the Federation to hunt for her sister, kidnapped two years earlier. She reaches the well-guarded university near where they’re holding her sister. Two rival inspectors close in on her. With time running out, can she escape campus and rescue her sister from an obvious trap?

There is this side of the wall and there is that side of the wall. It is time for Regina to jump the wall and find her sister who was kidnapped two years ago. Are things going to go smoothly for our heroine? Does the Sun rise in the East? With two bad guys after her it is going to take a bit of doing to try to escape capture and find her sister. “Regina Shen: Vigilance” is loaded with twists and turns that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Get ready Mr. Erlick has given us a fast-paced thriller filled with action, and great suspense. This book is going to take up all of your attention so start reading early because once you get started you will not want to put this book down until you actually finish. I am so looking forward to the next book with Regina and the rest of this cast of characters.

It has been two years since we last saw Regina. Regina has been under the guidance and protection of Mo-Mere. But Mo-Mere feels it is time for Regina to jump the Barrier Wall and join the University. But this is a challenge for Regina, how is she supposed to act docile when she has had to fight for everything up to this point. And how is she supposed to find her sister, Colleen when there is clearly marked path to get to the fertility clinic. Plus it doesn’t help that DeMarco is still searching for Regina. But DeMarco is not the only one looking for Regina to get ahead in this world.

Regina is such a strong character that I initially thought she was going to have more trouble fitting in at the University. But thankfully she has some professors helping keep her out of the line of those looking for her. But besides seeing how Regina has grown and how she is better prepared for this fight was seeing how the Federation is run. Here Regina is told all of these stories and everyone thinks that it would be better than stuck in the swamp. But the inside is not any better than where Regina came from.

I love how this series is progressing. I really cheered for Regina and hoped that she rescue Colleen even though everything was stacked against her. I am definitely excited to start reading Defiance.

The adventure with Regina Shen continues on in book two, Vigilance. This story is a continuation of book one, Resilience, and will make much more sense if you read book one first. In this novel, Regina has found a home base with her old school teacher, Mo-Mere, and a few other girls, Wendy and the twins. Mo-Mere continues to teach all the girls survival skills, as well as other skills she deems necessary. Also, the patrol-women are still on the search for Regina. With another storm on the way and the patrol women searching for all the girls that Mo-Mere is housing, she keeps the twins with her, but helps Regina and Wendy escape to the other side of the Wall. Wendy doesn’t make it and for Regina it is like losing her sister all over again. But Regina must press forward in the hunt for her sister. This is another somewhat fast paced story that teens that are fans of science fiction and dystopian fiction will enjoy.

( I received this book free from the author in exchange for my honest review )

This second installment was just as good as the first. Though the pacing wasn't as fast as the first, I will still sucked into this crafty world of mystery.

I was glad a love interest appear, though I wasn't too keen on her at first, she did grow on me and but I'm still not sure about her. I had high hopes for Wendy, but that dream was crushed. In all, I did like the new characters that appeared and I was surprised by the actions of some of the old.

This is a hard world that Lance Erlick has created, but a fascinating one. I loved the world building and the structure. There was clean explanations and I wasn't left confused as I was in reading the first. Though as I said the pacing was slow, the rhythm was spot on and in truth I liked the ease of this read. It gave me more time to dive deeper into this world that Regian has learned to survive in.

Regian is quickly becoming a fav of mine. Strong, smart and determined. She's going to be great , no great is the right word. Regian is going to be a legend, and I can't wait to read more about her.

I highly recommend this book, this series. It has quickly become one of my favs and I can't wait to div into the next book. Take a chance you will not be disappointed.

Happy Reading

I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.

Vigilance is a good read but there’s not near as much as action in it as there was in Resilience. Instead, it has a lot of suspense, and the action is at the end.

It is 2 years after book #1. Regina and Wendy have learned enough that their teacher, Mo-Mere, thinks they’re ready to go to University on the other side of the wall. Regina makes new friends and new enemies in the Federation. She also finds out that life in the Federation isn’t any better than life in the swamp, at least not for those who are Working Stiffs. She feels all alone at first but eventually finds allies.

The characters continue to grow. Regina is driven to find her sister, Colleen, but in the back of her mind she begins to wonder what her destiny is. Mo-Mere always told her she is special. Maybe she is…

Chief Inspector DeMarco, whose primary objective is supposed to be to find Regina and hand her over to the governor, continues to be full of surprises.

I liked Vigilance and anyone who likes science fiction and/or young adult books will enjoy it. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As we continue to follow Regina as she sneaks to the other side of the Wall and is about to start a new phase in her life. She is going to the University, and plans to find her sister. There are a few, or several, set-backs as she goes, but Regina continues to push forward and work hard to accomplish her goals. Demarco is still looking for Regina; they may have had a few run-ins, but somehow Regina slips from her almost-clutches.

Getting to continue the story definitely was a must when I finished the last book. I think there was only one part in the story that made me grimace, but I got passed it. The fact that the majority of all the characters are women kind of . . . I guess I was expecting some of the male roles to appear, but it was still a great read, nonetheless.

I enjoyed Book 2 in the series called "Regina Shen" as much as I liked the first book. Regina Shen has done all that she can to try to stay alive and not get caught by the horrible people that want to use her body to save others. She finally after 2 years has figured out a way to jump the Barrier Wall to try to get to her sister who she knows has been taken by these people. Has she done enough and learned all that she can to save her sister and keep herself free? After all she is the one that they want. Maybe they will let her sister go now. When she gets to her sister, if she can, there are very hard decisions that she must make. Will she be able to make the hard choices? I am so excited to start reading Book 3 in this series. I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for a review and all opinions are mine.

At the beginning of the book we discover that 2 years have passed between this book and Resilience. Regina is now 17. She continues her journey with constant challenges and meets new allies along the way.

Her character continues to evolve and become more complex without loosing what makes Regina special in this new world.

Since reading the first book and finding the fertility technology very interesting and learning more in this book I did a little research of my own. I found out they are doing this stuff now, which is really quite interesting. I received this product for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This second book of the series has Regina doing the unthinkable - crossing The Wall in search of her sister! We meet some new characters in this book, and say goodbye to others. Much like the reality of University, this book dragged in parts pertaining to the university, but otherwise kept a steady pace. It still also kept me guessing who Regina could trust and who she couldn't. I didn't love it as much as the first book, but I still enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to reading the third book in the series.
