70 books31 followersFrom Wikipedia: Harold Edward James Aldridge is a multi-award winning Australian author and journalist whose World War II despatches were published worldwide and formed the basis of several of his novels, including the prize-winning The Sea Eagle about Australian troops in Crete.
Aldridge was born in White Hills, a suburb of Bendigo, Victoria. By the mid 1920s the Aldridge family had moved to Swan Hill, and many of his Australian stories are based on his life growing up there. Aldridge moved to London in 1938; he currently lives in Battersea, South West London.
The stories that are based on the real living conditions of his hometown of Swan Hill include his 1995 Children's Book Council of Australia book of the year "The True Story of Lilli Stubeck", one of his St Helen series of children's books. He lived in Cairo for many years, writing several books about the Middle East, including "Cairo - Biography of a City" and the novels "The Diplomat" and "Heroes of the Empty View". His 1973 children's novel "A Sporting Proposition" was adapted for the 1975 Disney film "Ride a Wild Pony".

It's a very interesting book. The style owes a lot to Hemingway and is sometimes obscure.
Two Australians on Crete after the German takeover in 1941 are helped by Cretans in their attempt to reach Egypt. But they have to help the Greeks in their own struggle first, not against the Germans (called 'ironheads' in the book) but against the followers of the former dictator Metaxas. It should be clear that the heroes the Australians are helping are communists, though the word is never used. We are in at the events leading up to the Greek Civil War, in fact.
Should be interesting to read this in conjunction with Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Такие книги можно назвать «простыми историями». Два австралийских солдата пытаются выбраться с оккупированными немцами Крита, параллельно скрываясь от последователей местного про-фашистского режима. Скупые диалоги, прямолинейные описание, яркие эмоции, персонажи прописанные, словно сошедшие с древнегреческого мифа («рыжебородый Великан стоун», «джин Сарандас», «гром минометного выстрела» и т.п.) - книга о чести, долге и дружбе, очень прямолинейно, но очень нужно порой.
PS. Плюс - детальное погружение в парусное судоходство, детали и любовь, с которыми автор описал механику управления парусной лодкой я видел до этого только в профессиональной литературе

A fiction story about 2 Australians aided by the Greek partisans trying to make their way into Cairo (Egypt), where the main British garrison remains, from occupied Crete during WW2.
It was educating for me to find out about Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas, whose political regime (metaxism) could have been described as fascist, authoritarian form of power.
Very touching at the end, showing true men’s friendship in time where simple vividly delineated feelings come to the surface, at war.
