Mr. Pig, Mrs. Pig, and the piglets are hot, hot, hot and they really want to go to the beach. But time is running out for the Pigs! Will they be able to count the seconds, minutes, and hours and enjoy a swim in the ocean?
Amy Axelrod is the author of many picture books, including The Pigs Will Be Pigs Math Series (Simon & Schuster). Her debut novel, Your Friend in Fashion, Abby Shapiro (Holiday House 2011) was based on her childhood growing up in the 60's. "Funny, lively, sensitive- a real winner! (Kirkus) Amy's latest novel was co-authored with her son, David, who works in publishing. The Bullet Catch:Murder by Misadventure (Holiday House 2015) is a Junior Library Guild selection. Amy lives with her husband in New York's Hudson Valley in a house built in 1729. When she isn't writing, she's reading, baking, biking, bird-watching, or dreaming about all the places on her bucket list.
The Pigs decide to spend the day at the beach. The story is divided into seconds, minutes, and hours. The Pigs start their adventure at 11:30 A.M, however the beach closed at 5:30 P.M., and the Pigs never got to swim. This story teaches to determine how the time was used by the Pigs.
"Pigs on a Blanket" is a super cute book. I love how the author uses pigs as the main charters. This book is about a family of pigs who want to go to the beach. They quickly realize they may run out of time to swim in the ocean. As they travel to the beach, many things get in their way and their time is running out.
I liked this book because it was different. It all has to do with time and numbers. I liked how the illustrator decided to use pigs for the main charters. I think the pigs make the book funny and intriguing.
This book could be used to help kids learn how to tell time. It could even be used to help them learn the importance of time management skills.
This was a cool book to read. The first thing I notice was the introduction of time and how it related to they were doing. Everything had a time and a schedule. This made the focus on time repitious. This literature also introduced addtion as well as factions. This book was so awesome I could see how Amy Axelrod used Incrementing/Leaping to landmark, one of the strategies of double digit addtion and subtraction, was used as the time would be changed by 10. I would definitely use this book to implemtent the increment/leaping strategy as well as the components of time.
Pigs On A Blanket is a cute story about a group of pigs who want to go to the beach but they keep doing time consuming tasks in which they may not make it. As the story is read the children can predict whether or not the pigs will have enough time to go to the beach or not. With this book the children can have their own clocks and change the time as the story goes on and determine whether or not the pigs will make it to the beach.
I really love these pig books! In this one the pigs want to go to the beach but keep having to do time-consuming things and may not make it in time. I would have the kids keep time on a big clock together or each have their own small little fake clock and then they can make predictions and see if they think that the pigs will have enough time. It is really great to use for time because it makes it fun and interactive.
Full of colorful and bright illustrations. The pigs arent pigish at all. They are fun and happy. On a hot day they decide to go to the beach but they ahve to do it all under a time crunch. This book is great for teaching second graders time. They each use a small clock to move the hands as time passes while the pigs are trying to get to the beach.
I would share this book as a read-aloud experience to engage second or third-graders in a lesson about lapsed time. Throughout the book, there are opportunities for the children to calculate time intervals. In the back of the book, an explanation of the time intervals within the story line is presented.
This book would be great for students in 1st-5th grades when learning about time. This book does a great job giving examples of how much time the pigs had to get to the beach, how long it took them to do things, etc. This would be a good book to do a lesson of measurement of time because the ending is open for students to discuss how they think the pigs ran out of time.
A great book to integrate language arts and math lesson together. I did a math lesson about time and as I read the pages, the children would move their clocks to correspond to the time. In addition, the children can make a prediction to see if the pigs will make it to the beach before it closes.
These pig books are the best! In this one the pigs are trying to make it to the beach before it closes at 5:30. As they are trying to get there, things keep coming up that take time. This book would be good to use to discuss the concept of time with students.
Extra star for math integration: telling time. The Pig family heads to the beach. From getting ready, to the drive there, to waiting in line for food, we calculate the minutes ticking by. At the end problems to solve encourage another close read.
This book is about a family of pigs who trying to make it to the beach before it closes at 5:30. As they are trying to get there, things keep coming up. This book is good when talking about the concept of time with kids.
The pigs want to go to the beach but everything is taking to much time. Students can predict and sequence events. They can use the times to evaluate the elapsed time and determine how much time is left. This is a great book for 2nd - 3rd grade.
A story to read when introducing the concept of "time" to students. This would best be read in 1st Grade. It also allows them to practice their addition skills as they add up each activity that takes up time.
Help students understand elapsed time. Appropriate for 3rd through 5th grade. You can have the students follow along while you read the story and figure out what time it is at different parts of the story. How did the pigs run out of time? Problem solving review as well.
I would use this book as a read-aloud book in my class. I would give each one of my student's an analog clock that they will use to demonstrate the time that is mentioned in the book. Each student will set their clocks at 11:30 and will change the time to reflect the times mentioned in the text.
This book is a good way to introduce the concept of time to children. The Pig family decides to head to the beach for some fun in the sun, but things come up and the clock is ticking! I would use this book as an aid in teaching about time-hours, days, minutes.
I will begin by reading the book to my students. I will then provide my students with clock and have them calculate the amount of time the pigs spent getting ready, and the time they arrived to the beach. I will have my students follow along with the book and calculate time.
This is a really fun book that could be use to teach time to students. Students could have recording sheets and keep up with the hours passing throughout the story.
This book is so fun, and it incorporates time-telling into the story. We've loved reading it over the years, and the illustrations are really well done!
