Forever a Sean Dietrich fan and this book cemented that even more firmly. I chose my first “reading” to be the audio version and instead of my normal listening at 1.7 speed, I listened at normal speed. Good choice on my part!

Sean and Jamie share telling their Camino journey and while I followed along last year while they walked, these entries from their journals were so inspiring to listen to as they told their Camino journey in their own words and with inflection and emotion. It was such an inspiring and meaningful story to listen to. I am so grateful that they did this joint project. It is truly a gift.

I doubt that walking the Camino is in my future but I am a huge fan of reading and learning more about those who accept the challenge. Inspirational? Yes! Will it leave a lasting impression on me? Absolutely. Don’t miss the epilogue—- it is the heart of it all.

What’s not to love??? I’m a big Sean Dietrich fan (have read several of his books, follow him on socials) AND I’m a Camino de Santiago aficionado, having walked 3 different portions of the famous pilgrimage in Spain (and Portugal). My husband and I will be “completing” the Camino Frances route this fall by walking the middle section, or approximately 3 weeks of walking. Sean is a terrific writer and pulls me right into the experience with both its magic and hardships. So much life wisdom…….loved it.

I’ve followed Sean Dietrich for a while, so I already knew to expect a mix of humor, honesty, and stories that somehow make you laugh one minute and tear up the next. This book delivered all of that, but it also felt especially timely for me.

As someone who hopes to walk the Camino before I turn fifty, I loved experiencing a little piece of the journey through Sean’s eyes. Even if the Camino isn’t on your bucket list, this book has something to offer. It’s less about the destination than it is about the people we meet, the stories we carry, and learning to let go of the belief that we have to earn our worth. While there are beautiful descriptions of the pilgrimage itself, which was an exciting motivation to me, this isn’t really a book about the miles walked. It’s about the baggage we often carry for too long, and the idea that maybe we’ve been enough and walking “the Camino” all along.

Sean has a gift! He makes ordinary moments feel profound without ever sounding preachy or overly sentimental. His storytelling is warm, funny, and so personal. I found myself smiling often, reflecting even more, and closing the book with an even greater desire to one day lace up my own boots and walk the Camino.

If you enjoy memoirs that leave you feeling both encouraged and challenged, or if you’re simply a fan of Sean’s writing, you’ll likely love this one as much as I did.

I first heard of “Sean of the South” about a year ago, and when I heard about this book I ordered it right away. Sean and his wife Jamie take turns narrating their walk on the Camino de Santiago, and while I don’t see myself walking the whole Camino anytime, I always enjoy reading other’s experiences. The way this memoir was written was so interesting – Sean’s parts in type and Jamie’s parts hand-written. This was equal parts adventure, humor, and spirituality.

This book is so beautiful. I listened to the audiobook because Sean Dietrich has THE best narration/storyteller voice. But this memoir left so many deposits of wisdom in my heart that I want to go buy the physical book and re-read it so I can highlight and make notes. It is a must-read (or must-listen) for sure!!

Sean Dietrich is one of my all-time favorite writers; really, he's a storyteller whether it's through the written or spoken word, playing instruments, or his pencil sketches. Sean lives his life, eyes wide open, and then generously, humorously, and beautifully shares what he sees, feels, and learns from that living.

I planned for years to walk the Camino for my 50th bday this coming October. God had other plans. I am not walking the Camino, at least not for my 50th, but I was able to abide there nevertheless through Sean and Jamie's recollection of their time on the Camino.

I'm so grateful for this memoir; I especially love that Jamie's journal was included in sections. It added so much to this book. Another unexpected addition to this book was Sean's pencil sketches. Goodness gracious, this guy is talented.

Ive been a Sean Dietrich fan for several years. I stumbled on his Facebook posts, loved and laughed, and then began reading his books. I have not yet read through them all, but loved the ones I have. When he and Jamie began their Camino journey I looked forward to the regular updates on his Facebook page. I hoped he would write a book retelling all the stories. Well he did…sort of. I thought this book would be a compilation of all those posts with maybe some informative entertaining segues between them. Actually very little of it was verbatim from the posts, if my memory serves me. While of course we have his trademark self-deprecating humor, this one is a bit more focused on spirituality and meaning of life.
Another treat is the inclusion of chapters by his wife, Jamie. To be perfectly honest before this book,I wasn’t sure I liked Jamie. In You are My Sunshine, a memoir of their long bike ride, Jamie’s sarcastic and somewhat caustic personality shines through and she comes across as well…a little mean. In these stories I can see not only how much Sean loves her, but how much she loves him and my feelings toward her changed completely.
I am not in total agreement with all of Sean’s conclusions about God, but I do understand them and they give much food for thought. The book is also a great explanation of what the Camino is, and why it is so important to so many over the centuries. And like everything he writes, it is entertaining.

FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Does it matter that the Camino has been a bucket list hike for me for nearly two decades? Does it matter that I am obsessed with hiking, travel memoirs, and that this book was recommended to me by no less than 4 of my friends??? Well, maybe those things helped it to get to five stars but also- this book was just fantastic. Admittedly, I had never even heard of Sean Dietrich. I looked up his FB page and he seemed a bit long winded (sorry 🤣). However I have read several Camino books and figured I would enjoy it. And wow- I am blown away by this author. I absolutely gobbled up every word of this great book. Rarely does a book make me laugh out loud and this one did in spades. For me, he perfectly blended humor and lightheartedness with deep, poignant moments. I added several new quotes to my quote book from him. My favorite being, “the meaning of life is to give life meaning”. Yes 🙌. But mostly it was just such a pure, honest and completely captivating tale of one of the most historic and storied walks on this Earth, told perfectly.

I love every Sean Dietrich book that I have ever read. They are heartwarming and funny, and his narrations make them extra special.

This book, I Would Walk Five Hundred Miles, has all of the above , AND beautiful, poignant testimonies from Sean, Jamie and fellow pilgrims. Miracles still happen in the most unexpected places.

At times, it almost felt like I was there and a part of it all. The music, the singing, the prayers and the greatest of all, the love. They experienced what life should be like without all the “things” people value above humanity and kindness.

The telling of this story made me want to have the same experience that they had. To share my spiritual connection with God to others from around the world, regardless of what religion one’s background is.

As Jesus said; “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” I believe they found this and more on the Camino

Audio version. Reading a Sean Dietrich book is always such a special treat - like a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a roaring fire on a winter day. I also really enjoy reading memoirs of people who hike, so I was so excited to listen to Sean's memoir of hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. He did not disappoint! I am not an overly religious person, so I was a tiny bit skeptical, but I needn't have worried. . . This book made me think, cry, and burst out laughing. I highly recommend the audio version - I felt as if the author and I were sitting at a bar and he was telling me of his experience and sharing stories of his life. An added bonus was that Sean's wife, Jamie (the math teacher), was also a narrator and shared some of her journal entries. I was sorry when this ended.

I listened to Sean and Jamie tell their story in this inspiring, real and powerful book. I highly recommend listening to it…I have read Sean’s books and seen him perform. His voice telling this is so vulnerable and real. And Jamie’s is such a great balance…her humility and quiet voice (that I think really hides a much more, dare I say, raucous personality 🥰) add such a meaningful perspective and validation to Sean’s. I only wish there had been some fiddling!! Love this story and Sean’s help to get me through!

Great little travelogue of Sean’s hike on the Camino. As always, he did a wonderful job, illuminating his own inner thoughts, mixing both humor and deep personal reflection. As one might expect on the Camino there was a bit more spirituality than he sometimes has. I really wish there had been more from the math teacher, because it was fun to see the differences in how they perceived and experienced the pilgrimage.

In reading this book you will experience the trials and triumphs of the trail with Sean and Jamie as they travel this historic path. The connections and ability communicate with other pilgrims from around the world is truly inspiring. It is a bit of a variance from Sean’s usual style, but is nonetheless an excellent piece of work.

Loved this emotion filled account of the challenge of walking this spiritual journey! Listening to Sean read the book was perfect-his honesty and raw sensitivity felt so honest! It’s a great reminder of why we walk with God especially in times that seem so ungodly.
This would be a great listen for a car trip!

I first heard of Sean when several friends told me he was training to hike the Camino. I started following him on Facebook.

This book resonated with me as I am a fellow peregrina. I hiked the Camino from Léon to Santiago in 2017. Once you start your Camino, it never truly ends.

I don’t know if you need a interest in The Camino to enjoy this book but for anyone who is interested in learning about The Camino, or has walked or wants to walk The Camino or knows someone who has walked The Camino this book is excellent.

Sean and Jamie Dietrich walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain. As many on the Camino find, both Sean and his wife discover things about themselves, which they tell with humor and humility. I don't see eye to eye with Sean on spirituality, but I think we're closer at the end of the book than we were at the beginning.

Full of wit and yet full of pain - this is the story of Sean who, with his wife, the math teacher, traversed the Camino - or at least some of it. But it wasn't the distance that was important - it was what he learned - as well as what she learned (and they were different).
If you've been on the Camino, you'll enjoy this.

If is was possible to give this book 25 stars, I totally would! I read this one twice in two weeks and could totally reread it again. I enjoyed Sean’s humor and Jamie’s genuine honesty in this book and am truly inspired to walk the Camino and move to Spain. This book is life changing and I can not recommend it enough.

My first Sean Dietrich book and I loved it!

I’ve read many Camino books, and this is right up there with The Way My Way by Bill Bennet, although very different in tone.

Will definitely be reading more by this author.
