Blood Echoes: A Slow-Burn Supernatural Occult Horror and Body-Swapping Demon Thriller

Twins always finish each other's sentences. Especially in prison.

Ex-Marine Tracie Vossler thought working prison security was safer than combat. She was wrong.

When identical twin inmates and an ancient body-swapping demon collide in Blood Echoes, Tracie's only priority becomes keeping her twelve-year-old daughter alive — no matter what it costs her.

A demon that wears human faces. A prison that can't contain what's already inside. Blood Echoes is a slow-burn supernatural horror set against the claustrophobic Covid pandemic dread of a 2020 corrections facility, where Tracie Vossler discovers that some threats can't be stopped with combat training or institutional protocol.

What would you sacrifice to save your child? Blood Echoes follows one mother's brutal reckoning with a force older than reason, weaving together prison horror, demonic mythology, and a love so fierce it bends the boundaries of identity itself.

From the author who brought you the alien invasion hexalogy Dissonance, the Christian dystopian saga The End, the epic space opera series The Talisman and nearly 50 other books, Aaron Ryan's Blood Echoes doesn't flinch.

Part procedural thriller, part occult nightmare, it tracks a single mother navigating a demonic conspiracy inside a real Washington state prison during a pandemic — where the scariest thing isn't the monster, but how far she's willing to go.

From the start of the book you want to know what is going to happen next. I couldn’t put it down.

It is about twins who don’t have to finish their sentences to know what they are talking about. So it makes it hard to try to listen to them talk and understand what they are planning even know you know something is up.

That is when things start happening that no one can explain.

Very good horror book, the first one I have ever read.

Blood Echoes is a creepy, horror novel that grabbed onto me and wouldn't let me go! From the beginning, the idea of twins swapping bodies was intriguing enough but throw a demon into the mix and you never know what is going to happen. I love the main character, Tracie. She's tough ex-military with an unwavering love for her daughter she would do anything for. The twist at the end I would never have guessed. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Aaron Ryan's Blood Echoes follows Tracie Vossler, an ex-Marine turned prison security guard, as she becomes entangled in the horrifying mystery surrounding identical twins Elias and Gabriel Brickert. Set largely inside Airway Heights Corrections Center and told through shifting timelines, the novel begins with a murder that should be impossible and then widens into something far stranger: occult rituals, demonic possession, body-swapping, institutional panic, and a mother’s desperate fight to protect her daughter, Lela. What starts as a prison thriller curdles into supernatural horror, with blood evidence, security footage, and human memory all becoming unreliable witnesses.

I was most compelled by the novel’s atmosphere. Ryan gives Airway Heights a clammy, pressurized quality; the prison never feels like a backdrop so much as a sealed lung trying to breathe around something rotten. Tracie’s voice is brash, bruised, funny in the wrong places, and sometimes jagged enough to cut through the melodrama. Her fixation on burgers, cigarettes, nail appointments, and her daughter’s teenage moods keeps the story tethered to ordinary life even as the plot begins to levitate into the occult. That grounding matters because without it, the supernatural machinery could have felt too gaudy; with it, the horror feels personal, almost domestic.

The book also has a maximalist streak. It piles on murders, rituals, possessions, confessions, betrayals, legal fallout, and emotional wreckage with very little interest in restraint. The momentum is hard to deny. Ryan writes like someone determined to shove every locked door open, and the result is messy in a way that often feels alive. I especially appreciated how the novel refuses to let Tracie remain a clean heroine. Her love for Lela is luminous, but her choices grow morally murky, and the ending leaves a residue of grief rather than the neat click of a solved case.

I think this would be a great book for readers who enjoy supernatural horror, prison thrillers, demonic possession stories, occult suspense, body-swap horror, and psychological thrillers. Fans of Stephen King’s The Green Mile may recognize the charged prison setting and the sense that something otherworldly has slipped into a place already built for suffering, though Ryan’s novel is more lurid, more frantic, and more openly demonic. Blood Echoes is a grim and feverish book about blood ties, borrowed bodies, and the terrible cost of surviving evil.

Ex-Marine Tracie Vossler has taken on a new role with the prison security team. Assuming this would be a safer, less stressful job than her military service, she discovers the exact opposite. With the prison locked down due to COVID-19, an ancient demon seeking revenge has the perfect killing ground. Alternating between the forceful occupation of twin brothers while creating a bloodbath within the correctional facility creates a puzzle that Tracie must solve. Already exhausted at the killing, trying to determine who, what, where, and why the horrific murders are happening, the kidnapping of her daughter triples the danger and shortens the time she has to find the killer and somehow expel the demon from her reality.

I have read several Aaron Ryan novels, all excellent, but Blood Echoes is the first pure horror novel of his that I have read. A hardcore fan of horror, especially those that center around demons, witches, vampires, and the like, Ryan scores big with me in Blood Echoes. Aaron Ryan adeptly uses his tried-and-true methodology of slowly building tension while he keeps readers turning the pages, eager to discover and identify who or what is behind all the bloody deaths. Characterization is a strong point in all of Ryan's work that I have read. Whether a protagonist or antagonist, every character, including those in Blood Echoes, is true to life. Ryan clearly demonstrates his versatility in creating verisimilitude, that all-important sense of reality that I believe to be an absolute necessity, in every fiction story, regardless of genre. Blood Echoes is a winner, and a solid five-star worthy review!

Beta reader. This one nailed it yet again! And now I hear he has more kids picture books coming out? From HORROR to CHILDREN'S BOOKS? WOW! Anyway, read all of Dissonance, Talisman, The End, The Phoenix Experiment, Forecast, The Slide, and now this one... seriously another homerun out of the park. Loved every minute of it. I reread it and it totally makes sense from the two perspectives; it took some skillful writing to make the second perspective work, I think. But he did it. Nicely done, Aaron! Two thumbs up!

DUUUUUUUDE! Crazy cool! I've read everything else by Aaron and this is no joke one of the best. Can this guy just completely nail every genre or what? This is a nailbiter in some segments, and there's a DRASTIC twist that you do NOT see coming. And the end? I won't spoil it but YIKES!

Loved it, and will definitely be reading it again. I love the cover too, by the way. Nice.

This one was a nail biter. I could not look away from the page. Just when you think you know where this is going, the floor falls out from under you. This is not my usual genre of book, but it is a hair-raising read and an interesting introduction to it.
