🌿Anna Stockings has delivered a highly satisfying, utterly charming book that is perfect for fall. I know that many readers will love the distinctive vibe of this novel. Stockings crafts a synthesis of Victorian steampunk, gothic tropes, and vivid symbolism, and this creates an atmosphere that is an immersive and dark delight.
🦋 The nervous and mustached Harold Evans shines as a timely hero, despite this being a historical romance. His intense longing for Agnes from afar builds to their quirky meetings. He starts as fairly unsure, so his confidence and adeptness as a lover comes as a lovely reveal. Stockings gives us a complete character arc with Harry, and I found myself thoroughly enchanted with this accountant and lepidopterist.
🧚🏽 The elements of magical realism are another strength here, and they help connect Agnes and Harold to the larger found family that surrounds them. Although dead, the Baron of Skelton is a fully developed character and a vivid presence. An impressing debut that had me rooting for these characters from the get go!
The tone,the prose and the setting are all so well established here it was just so wonderful to see that there are still authors out there that want to give readers as much information as they can without bogging down the story and I think Anna did a wonderful job here.
The romance. I really loved these two together. They’re awkward, shy and inexperienced and I won’t lie that’s like catnip to me so I gobbled this up. I do wish the realisation was a little slower though on Evans’ behalf just because I really could do without him talking about his dick when she’s hanging him tea and biscuits but that’s just personal preference.
The sex. I thought it was well done not overkill and didn’t have me wondering when we were gonna get back to the plot.
I also love how this was a great patchwork of so many genres I love. It wasn’t over the top or unbelievable either which is hard to do when there’s a paranormal element included.
Overall I love the world Anna has built here and tbe characters and has stuffed with personality.
The next book is sapphic so you already KNOW I’ll be in that arc request form!

Agnes, a recent widow with a passion for not-quite-magical tea blends, finds her promised inheritance under threat after her husband’s will is read. Despite being denied the home she was promised and the apothecary business she has built, she persists that her husband Richard promised her the home. Harry, her husband’s accountant and the executor of the will, has been holding a long-time tendre for Agnes after meeting her years ago. Now he’s determined to help her against her husband’s cousin and heir (aka the very obvious villain). The two work together to try and uncover some inconsistencies with her husband's will, while also navigating some ghostly hauntings.
I adored Harry’s sweet and boisterous family who seem supportive of his wishes. And similarly, Agnes’s found family of besties were an excellent addition. I loved that Harry wasn’t your traditionally confident hero. I do love a man experiencing growth, and I think he has such a great arc to get over his insecurities. His shy disposition was a refreshing pace and was a great complement for Agnes, who has a past of being weary of men (part of the reason she married an older, gentle husband the first go around). Agnes’s apothecary work felt really well researched and gave her character such a great purpose, particularly in her work with the community.
A great debut; you can tell that Anna is a fan of the genre in the careful way she crafts this narrative and her characters. Fans of yearning will be swooning over Harry, who’s been secretly pining for Agnes for years before even really knowing her. But it’s how these two come together that feels really special and romantic. This one might be sweet, but it’s also a good bit steamy even if our MCs are both inexperienced in that regard. I feel like Anna did a really careful job building this intimacy but also making us very aware that these two capital W, Want each other. Perfect for fans of yearning, ghost stories, and the power of found family!

A strong debut novel that is perfect for fall reading. Stockings purposefully leaves us off-kilter with an opening right at the funeral for Agnes' husband. She's near hysterics, the rumors are flying that she's best case an opportunist but more likely a witch, people fall into trances and deliver otherworldly warnings, and there's an odd, sweaty, nervous man staring at her. Boom, locked in.
Agnes is in fact, NOT a witch. I mean, she apprenticed with one and the veil is certainly thin around her, but "Agnes had chosen not to practice the craft." She's an accomplished herbalist, and spent her days making up potions and teas to treat the overlooked, mainly women and the poor. Her much older husband (it was a marriage of convenience for them both) has recently died, and turns out his will does not leave her the house and apothecary as promised so she can carry on her work, but leaves it to his heir, his awful nephew Charles. The sweaty nervous man from the funeral is her husband's accountant Harry, executor of the will.
What follows is part romance, part mystery, and part ghost story. Harry is *super* attracted to Agnes (to the point where I was frequently wishing he would show some decorum). Neither of them are very experienced with love, either physical or emotional. This leads to some fun explorations of their wants, but also some less-fun screw-ups and assumptions, as they navigate these new areas. At one point my kindle note was just Harry! WYD??
Agnes has to navigate her role in the world, now that she doesn't have the protection of her wealthy and titled husband, as well as her feelings of betrayal given his promises that she would be provided for and able to keep her business going. She also has to navigate her feelings for Harry, when she's never had feelings like this before. Thankfully, she has the guidance and affection of her friends, who have Future Book Heroine written all over them, and who also have some magical abilities.
This was an incredibly strong debut, but it definitely has some of the hallmarks of a debut. We see all the research and ideas the author had for the story, and we learn about herbal remedies, and moths, and printing processes, and the history of ghosts in York. The pacing is a little off, with characters in an urgent situation with a clear tick-tock who also take "days" and even "weeks" to pout or mope about. I wanted them to feel more invested in wrapping things up! Nevertheless, I am excited to see what Stockings writes next in this unusual setting of slightly supernatural York. 4.5 stars.

There is so much to love about this debut. The gothic ambience and ghostly elements make it a perfect “spooky season” read. I love a good subverted expectation, and this novel subverts them left and right:
The dead husband wasn’t a brute, or a monster. He was a kind man, with a tragic secret.
The “Witch of York” is a talented, compassionate woman, just trying to help her suffering neighbors.
Both Agnes and Harry are relatively inexperienced sexually. ( Agnes’ marriage was partially cover for her husband, who preferred the company of other men). Despite this inexperience, Agnes is refreshingly un-embarrassed in her intimate relationship with Harry. She knows what she wants from that precious little moth-man, and she isn’t shy about asking for it. The presence of communication, and a touch of awkwardness, in the love scenes is also refreshingly realistic, without sacrificing the overall effectiveness of the scenes.
Rather than Agnes giving up her life’s work for love, Harry, our introverted, yearning hero, devotes himself to supporting her calling. “Did he need to be his own man, when he could be hers?” Is TOP TIER trope subversion.
And while we are on the subject: I love an introverted hero, and Harry is a delightful example. He’s a good-hearted man, more comfortable in the company of moths than that of women; but he recognizes the extraordinary in the unassuming Lady Skeleton, and the development of their bond is sweet and wonderful to witness.
I love Agnes and Harry so much that I went straight to Anna Stockings’ website and found her bonus short piece. I look forward to seeing further moments from these two in future installments of the Widows of York series.

Agnes has recently been widowed and is unexpectedly facing the loss of the home that her older husband promised would be her inheritance. However, she finds an unexpected ally in the stammering but sweet Harry, her deceased husband’s accountant and the executor of his will. But can their fledgling connection survive amidst the uncertainty of her position and the secrets they slowly uncover?
Harry was very sweet. He struggles so much to speak to women and his anxieties have held him back in his personal life. He also puts so much pressure on himself to build a lasting legacy like his father and brothers. All of this means he doesn’t feel worthy of Agnes and he has his own journey of self-discovery and confidence to embark on during the story.
Agnes is a mix of pragmatism and vulnerability. She’s in a precarious position whilst also processing her grief for her husband. I loved that she had a strong sense of self and her passion as a herbalist was so interesting to read about. Her compassionate nature helped her to see past Harry’s nerves, allowing their connection to flourish.
Agnes and Harry had a lovely connection thought it suffered various minor setbacks. The way Harry feels about Agnes is the epitome of yearning - the man was down bad for Agnes before he really even knew her. The sex scenes built on the burgeoning intimacy between them and often it felt that this was when they were the most open and comfortable with each other. Seeing them both gradually open up to each other was very heartwarming.
The pacing stuttered a few times when misunderstandings or distance separated Agnes and Harry, but the characters were the strength of the story here as they were both compellingly fleshed out, with plenty of intriguing side characters as well. Overall, I thought this was a great debut that conjured up a vivid sense of Victorian York, and I loved the slight paranormal and gothic elements as well.

Not Quite A Witch is a historical romance, the first in the Witches of York series. It follows Agnes, Baroness of Skelton and recently widowed, and Harry, the accountant managing the Skelton inheritance. Guided by ghostly messages and secrets concealed within the walls, Harry and Agnes unearth shocking truths and vile schemes. From their partnership, attraction takes root.
This was a really lovely read. The setting in Victorian York painted a beautiful scene. I loved how this was not just a romance between two people, but also a story about friendship, brotherly love and tragedy about having to hide who you really are. It also incorporates some darker themes and healing from that.
Even though Richard, Agnes' late husband, is only mentioned in memories and in ghostly appearances, he seems like the most amazing and supportive friend anyone could wish for. Agnes and Harry are both nerdy in their own fields and are the perfect match. I'm so happy Agnes finds peace with him. I could have done with a few less mentions of Harry's arousel though, certainly in the first quarter of the book. I knew he was obsessed with Agnes without those mentions.
The mystery around Richard's will is not hard to solve. Don't expect massive revelations and twists you did not see coming. I did really enjoy the addition of the paranormal and the ghostly encounters to solve the mystery. And the feisty cat Bram and his love for his favourite human Richard was really endearing.
Not Quite A Witch I think is the perfect read of you are looking for a mostly cozy historical romance, with a little paranormal touch and some mystery to top it all off. Perfect for the autumn of you'd ask me.

This was a really lovely read. The setting in Victorian York painted a beautiful scene. I loved how this was not just a romance between two people, but also a story about friendship, brotherly love and tragedy about having to hide who you really are. It also incorporates some darker themes and healing from that.
Even though Richard, Agnes' late husband, is only mentioned in memories and in ghostly appearances, he seems like the most amazing and supportive friend anyone could wish for. Agnes and Harry are both nerdy in their own fields and are the perfect match. I'm so happy Agnes finds peace with him. I could have done with a few less mentions of Harry's arousel though, certainly in the first quarter of the book. I knew he was obsessed with Agnes without those mentions.
The mystery around Richard's will is not hard to solve. Don't expect massive revelations and twists you did not see coming. I did really enjoy the addition of the paranormal and the ghostly encounters to solve the mystery. And the feisty cat Bram and his love for his favourite human Richard was really endearing.
Not Quite A Witch I think is the perfect read of you are looking for a mostly cozy historical romance, with a little paranormal touch and some mystery to top it all off. Perfect for the autumn of you'd ask me.

I loved the premise of Not Quite a Witch, and there was a lot here that I enjoyed. The supernatural elements and mystery kept me interested, particularly the secrets surrounding the house, and I really liked many of the supporting characters.
Harry was a sweet and thoughtful character who genuinely seemed to want the best for Agnes, while Oscar's grief was handled particularly well. Ward and Agnes's friends also added a lot of warmth to the story.
Unfortunately, the romance didn't work quite as well for me. The constant reminders of Harry and Agnes's sexual attraction became distracting and sometimes seemed to interrupt the story rather than develop naturally alongside it. Some of the language around this also felt very modern, which repeatedly pulled me out of the historical setting.
I particularly wanted more gradual development from Agnes. She often seemed to fall back into the same patterns of mistrust despite having been given reasons to think differently, and at times both characters' emotional conflicts seemed to disappear and reappear according to what the plot required.

Unfortunately, although the late Baron had promised to leave her their home, his will indicates that he has left it to the smarmy new Baron instead. Accountant Harry Evans is working with the estate, and is totally smitten with Agnes, so he tries to help her any way he can.
The action is tense and so satisfying. The romance between Agnes and Harry is heartfelt and delicious and they are obviously well suited, but there is lot of ground to cover before they can be together. Agnes is literally haunted after the Baron’s death and the reader isn’t initially sure if the haunting is friendly or malignant. Add to that the Baron’s creepy heir, and the complication of the will and it’s quite a read!
I particularly liked Agnes, she has had a very difficult childhood and an unconventional marriage and she is gentle, thoughtful and kind – but not a pushover. She is also brave and tenacious – so lovely to see, especially in Victorian times. I loved all the teas, and of course Bram, Agnes’ cat. Harry is a honey who has been besotted with Agnes for years, even though he has hardly spoken to her. He’s awkward and shy, and very smart in his own way.
I think this novel is a debut for Anna and she’s done a fantastic job researching a rather Gothic corner of Victoriana and layering it up with a ghost – recommended!

4.5/5 This was such an enjoyable read. It was Anna Stockings debut novel but it didn’t read as one. I enjoyed her writing and thought the characters were well developed.
I liked Harry so much. He’s already half way in love with Agnes when the story begins but I didn’t care because he was so earnest in his feelings and desires towards Agnes. It helped that he’d pined for her ever since he caught a glimpse of her five years ago. He’s an accountant by day with a passion for lepidotery. In a family of entrepreneurs who’ve found their purpose, Harry feels he’s still on the lookout for his.
Agnes was a delight as well. I enjoyed that she had already come so far and then by the end she’s grown in being more confident of her independence and knowing what she deserves. I loved that she’d found purpose in helping others and using passed down knowledge of herbal remedies.
The help of a ghost, close friends, and a loyal cat and butler made for an enjoyable found family. With some mischief and a few twists it was entertaining and I had a lot of fun reading it.

This is both good - because he can converse with her more easily to help solve her issues! - and bad - because it's even harder for him not to blurt out how much he is absolutely obsessed with her.
If you're familiar with historical romance and looking for something that's not just a retread of other books, this will hit the spot. We've got two inexperienced characters who actually communicate with each other; an unconventional setting outside of the ton; a little smidgen of the supernatural; and more. I did find it a little on the long side, but that may be personal preference (I like it when my books get to the point, but if you're someone who wants a slow unfolding of a relationship, this might be right up your alley).

The storyline was very good and cute, I have no complaints. An accountant in love with his employer's widow and the widow, who'll fall in love for the first time in her life. I'm always a sucker for an MMC who falls first and falls harder. I also loved how their love story was, sweet, passionate, and romantic.
CHARACTERS:
The FMC, Agnes, was an amazing woman. I loved how she was passionate about what she did and the people she helped. She's a strong, amazing woman, and I'm glad that she found the love and happiness she deserves.
The MMC, Harry, was okay, too. I think he's the most realistic MMC I've ever read. I could visualise someone like him irl. I loved his love for Agnes. Although, I think he was obsessing over being a 'made man' when he was pretty successful. He watched out for Agnes when there was no one to.
The other characters I liked were the servants at the manor. I liked how they supported Agnes and Harry's relationship.
WRITING STYLE:
It was okay. The book was perfectly paced. I have no complaints, really.

I loved Agnes! Her depth and character growth were phenomenal. She was fierce, loyal, and caring. I also really enjoyed the side characters, but I wish they had been a bigger part of the story. Harry, to me, was not a very likable character; his personality was too dependent on the other people in his life.
I really enjoyed the mystery and supernatural elements within the story. They were very interesting and fun additions, but I wish the story had focused more on them. Instead, it focused almost exclusively on the romance for most of the book. Don't get me wrong, I love a good romance! But I found the other aspects of this book more enticing than the romance plot line. I would have liked more focus on Agnes' herbalism (not-magic) and the actual magic elements as well. I think that would have been very interesting.
The romance, for me, was my least favorite aspect. Harry's obsessiveness and stalker tendencies was very problematic; it was something I could not get on board with, even by the end of the book. I could picture the setting of York, inside Agnes's home, crystal clear.
Having said that, I found this book to be low on tension — both characters are immediately enamored of each other, so I wished there was more push and pull and more of an impossibility of them being together. There is a third act breakup that is resolved in a fashion I personally found to be a bit too cheesy.
Also, the villain gets away with far too much and I always hate when that happens.
Nevertheless, a solid debut and I hope to see more from the author!

This was a fun read with some magical and seasonal vibes that make it a perfect autumn read. It’s a sweet romance with some welcome steam that’s also a little bit cozy mystery with some light paranormal and magical happenings. Both MCs are also nerdy in the best possible ways—I say that quite lovingly! They both had somewhat niche interests that beautifully illustrated their personal qualities. I especially enjoyed how Harry's interest in moths reflected his worldview—that even the mundane and overlooked are quite beautiful if one takes the time to look more deeply.
I loved that both Agnes and Harry were, at times, anxiety-ridden in the best of ways—it felt very real and it added poignancy to their character arcs. The HEA felt very earned because both of them had to overcome insecurities in themselves. This was a beautiful example of how two people don’t change FOR the other person, per se, but how falling in love can help a person become the best version of themselves.
The conclusion was very satisfying: the antagonist gets a fitting comeuppance, and the HEA includes Harry standing just behind Agnes’s shoulder as a supportive partner, finding ways to let shine rather than taking command. Anna, a recent widow and highly skilled in the art of preparing medicinal potions, finds herself threatened by a dilemma and a mystery that could cost her everything she has worked for. Harry, obsessed with Agnes and unable to think clearly, was ready to dedicate himself to helping her solve the mystery and offer her the protection and passion that Agnes's life needed. Harry and Anna brought a smile to my face several times with the naiveté, nervousness, inexperience, and insecurities that gripped them at times. I was pleasantly entertained by the eagerness they displayed in their attraction and the friendship that developed between them, which blossomed into a deep and lasting relationship. I enjoyed how the author waves around the baron's character, which kept me intrigued and eager to see what role he would play. The story made me reflect on the importance of supportive encouragement, the value of strong family relationships, and the damage that contempt can cause. I really enjoyed this book! This is a fun HistRom debut with a little bit of magic/paranormal witchcraft sprinkled on top. There's a little bit of a mystery/suspense tossed in the plot, but I think the plot and the twists are all fairly obvious from the start of the book, so if you like to be bamboozled with twists, this book won't do that. I loved the character arcs for both MCs. Agnes is so headstrong and principled in her worth to the community and herself. Harry is a bit emotionally immature at the beginning of the novel, but he really finds his stride between his family's support and Agnes's teas and tinctures and of course her affection. (If you find Raj from the Big Bang Theory's inability to talk to women without a beverage for fortitude to quell his social anxiety charming, you're going to love Harry). There's also a super cute cat and a little ghost haunting situation. I think there's a little something for everyone in this book.

I loved the slightly different setting of York, rather than the ubiquitous London of most histroms. Stockings also skillfully led us though several social issues of the time with a light but informative touch.
Being the first in the series we are introduced to alot of characters, sometimes a little inexplicably, but I'm sure we will learn more of them in the coming books.
I feel like Stockings may have gone down alot of enjoyable research rabbit holes for this book, which covered Harry's moths, Agnes’ herbal remedies and teas, and York itself.
This is well worth the read and I look forward to more from Anna Stockings.

I feel like Stockings may have gone down alot of enjoyable research rabbit holes for this book, which covered Harry's moths, Agnes’ herbal remedies and teas, and York itself.
This is well worth the read and I look forward to more from Anna Stockings.

I received an ARC of Not Quite a Witch given to me by the author. While I greatly appreciate her giving me this opportunity, it in no way influences my review.
Not Quite a Witch is a nice romance set in Victorian England between a recently widowed Baroness and her dead husband's accountant. It has a nice ambience, supernatural but homely; she was quite attached to her late husband and he to her, so that his presence is not scary but reassuring. I liked the mystery and enjoyed the several scenes where she has to show character and be affirmative.
I also liked the way she has to solve a difficult situation with the will, and I particularly loved her cat.
What really makes me give it 3 stars is that it has so many situations that would never ever be possible in Victorian England, much less with her husband being a member of the ton, no matter how reclusive and/or dead. This kept me from really being drawn into the story, since my head was screaming NO WAY through half the book.
If you´re looking for a light romantic read, however, this is just the book for you.

Not Quite a Witch is a novel about Agnes, Baroness of Skelton who becomes widowed and risks losing her home as well as the herbalism she has dedicated her life to. Harry Evans was the Baron of Skelton's accountant and executor of his will. Harry has long been taken with the Baroness and makes it his duty to help her when the Baron's will does not have her inheriting what was discussed between her and her husband.
This book has so many different elements and it was a fun, quick read for me. This is a cozy Victorian mystery romance with paranormal touches. I really enjoyed Agnes' complicated past and Harry's loyalty toward Agnes and her late husband Richard. Harry's family was also a wonderful addition to the book. If you enjoy a haunting historical romance, then I definitely recommend this book to you. This will be perfect to read this fall!

The first half of the book was a bit slow - it probably could have been condensed down by at least half. Things picked up a lot more after that, however. I enjoyed Agnes and Harry's personal growth as well as learning more about Richard and his secrets. The romance was a little odd at first, but it grew on me. It did feel very strange that these two completely inexperienced and anxious people would suddenly magically be masters in bed, though. Those interactions always felt rather false. But the rest of their relationship, the mistakes they made and obstacles they faced, that all felt more real. I liked the resolution to the plot as well, it felt well earned even if the ghost did play a part in it. The writing was smooth with no major issues, though the dialogue at times felt a little bland, like the characters didn't quite all have their own voices.

I am counting my lucky bookish stars that I received this ARC because this was truly a delightful read! I was immediately drawn in and captivated by the bewitching setting, characters (loved Bram!🐈⬛) and the cozy spookiness! The dialogue was superb and the chemistry between the FMC and MMC was entirely perfect. The yearning, oh it was so well done! I also loved the mystery element woven throughout with the dash of supernatural influences. This book was perfectly well balanced and I enjoyed the undertones of self-realization and found family. It was a rich read and one that will stay with me. I cannot wait for the continuation of the series and delight in more of this world! Highly recommend reading!✨

What a cute Victorian era romance with gothic vibes. I read this is one sitting and couldn’t get enough of Agnes and Harry. Agnes is a recent widow who runs an apothecary for those who need it most, and Harry is her late husband’s accountant for the estate who is shy and awkward around women. Cue the banter and sexual tension while they try to keep Agnes from being kicked out of her house. Honestly, Harry can get it. I loved that he was awkward, average height and seemed so genuine, like zero game, just a good guy. And Agnes is kind of a quiet (or not) badass and I was rooting for her throughout. I liked the element of supernatural and the mystery sprinkled through, and I cannot wait for the second book.

This was a fun debut! It was a fitting read as we head into the fall season with ghosts, rumored witches, and an inheritance mystery. This book also felt incredibly cozy to me. A note on the cozy, while there seemed to be situations in the book that should increase the tension it still stayed very cozy feeling. I enjoyed getting to meet Agnes and Harry. I liked that Agnes felt very solidly herself and her passion for her work. It was great watching Harry grow into his confidence a bit more around Agnes as the book progressed. I also loved getting to meet the rest of Agnes’ household and her friends, and Harry’s family they were a wonderful cast of supporting characters to fall in love with as well. I am looking forward to what Stockings writes next!

What a debut!! I can tell you right now that my review is not going to do this book justice. Agnes and Harry are two beautiful souls who just belong together. Agnes is a herbalist who helps everyone in need, whether they can pay or not. She's recently been widowed. Harry is a thoughtful, reserved accountant who has a heart of gold. They are drawn together as they try to manage her husband's will.
I love it that they constantly scandalize each other. They're so adorable. There's also some gothic interwoven into the story that made me question why I was reading this at night, by myself, haha. The writing is absolutely top notch. It reminds me of Diana Biller. Anna Stockings is an author to watch, for sure!!

This book isn't just a tale of romance, but also a deep dive into the many ways the past shaped the future we are living in. While I don't want to spoil the ways this proves true in the book, there is, without doubt, a very melancholic aura to the story... To the struggle of its characters and the way they, like us today, fight not only themselves and their flaws but also the circumstances in which they exist.
The book is absolutely lovely, and I am glad my day has been spent enjoying it without either hurry or interrumption.

I am rather torn about this book...
There are so many elements that I loved... The existence of witches and ghosts, Agnes' teas and herbalism, the York setting, the FMC being a widow, the queer representation, the mystery, ....
I really enjoyed all of those but also wished there would have been more lore and more focus on the female characters and the witchcraft.
This book is a first and foremost a romance. And while I don't mind a good historical romance there were parts that didn't not work for me.
Harry being obsessed with Agnes before he even knew her felt rather creepy to me. And I was really turned off by the mention of his erection in every single scene they had together from the start. I love Agnes as a character but Harry was a no for me.
