My Review:
We are now 18 months after Code Uprising. Taylor is still missing as well as Katerina. Cordelia is now working for King Sebastian. He is back as the King Demon of London but Faustine is still Queen as well, they work together when needed.
Everything has been pretty quiet since then but now strange things, and bad ones start to happen. Now the human race seems under attack. Usually, the paranormal world doesn't interfer with the humans but when they receive a Haiku that reminds a lot like the ones Katerina had done before, they take a closer look.
Again, Cordelia, Faustine, Jagger, Quinn, King Sebastian, Lady Annabelle and their friends will have to join to put a definite stop to all of this before too many human lives are taken. Will they be able to finally catch up with Katerina and her minions? Will it be too late?

What a great story!! Imogen did it again. This one is full of suspense and I was pleased to find all my favorite characters to join together. Even the pesky one are there. It's always a pleasure to read about Rea which is quite someone. I was so thrill by the epilogue at the end, I hope to see more about that Imogen. ;-) If, like me you loved the series, you have to read this. You will not regret it.

****I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review****
Rating: 1.5 out of 5
Series book: Yes
I just..I don't know what to say. First off, what I think of the book isn't necessarily what you would think of it. On Goodreads, there are a couple reviews on Retaliation and they're all five stars. Maybe you'll AGREE with them, maybe you'll agree with me. Okay. You've been warned.
Lets start with the Pros of Retaliation:
The actual physical copy is incredible. The cover feels like velvet and the art is really moody. If you're looking for a book that looks good on the shelf, you've found it.
As for reading it, well.... On to the Cons
"I eat chocolate" vs "I devoured the chocolate like I hadn't eaten in years"- Which sentence sounds better? The one that is so basic the first thing I think is "who cares." Like, great you ate chocolate. Is that special? And then, with the second one, it's still telling me that you ate chocolate, but at least it's a little interesting. It makes you think, "Why did you devour it? Was it that good? What type was it?" If I were to describe the writing in retaliation using one of those sentences, guess which one I'd pick? That's right, "I eat chocolate. " That's great. Eat that chocolate and enjoy it. Just don't tell me about it. There's also the fact that the writing reminded me of that of a fifth grader. If you were to flip to a random page in the book, the first paragraph you read will follow this basic structure:
This is the first sentence
This is why the first sentence is the first sentence
This is why the first sentence is the first sentence
This is why the first sentence is the first sentence
This sentence was the first
You see the problem don't you? Repetitive plus ridiculously simplistic writing equals one very unhappy me.
Hello random character NUMBER one, meet random character number two. -The point of having different characters is for them to actually be different. Every character should not sound the same when they speak. If I have to GO BACK and think about who is talking during a dialog because they sound exactly alike, your doing something wrong.
On the same topic, every character has this way of speaking thats some weird mix of old people talk mixed with teenager talk, if that makes sense. Basically, you can't tell how old people are by how they talk because it's so inconsistent. One second they sound like a 16 year old and then the next second they'll sound like a stuffy 70 year old. Can I get some consistency, please! If you can't write different characters, at least write their dialog well. Make it fit their age or, if that's too hard, at least be consistent.
Lets talk about these WTF moments- I am utterly offended by how many times one of the main characters said or did something so stupid it was like, what do you think I'm stupid? Because I'm not, but I can't say the same about these characters. Want some examples? Get ready because here they come.
I'm gonna give you three from the same scene. Faustine is at Neave's house a and Neave's is just like "girl, leave. I want to be alone." So what does Faustine say to stall and search for suspicious things? She asks to go to the bathroom. In Neave's APARTMENT. When she can just take an elevator to her own. Yes, that's not suspicious. That's not weird at all. Carry on, Faustine. Carry on.
What does she do next? She brushes her teeth. Where exactly did she get that toothbrush? Was it in Neave's bathroom? Do you just carry your toothbrush around in case you get the excuse to sleuth around? Either way, there is no way that is sanitary. Reevaluate yourself please. A demon princess/queen should not behave that way. Also, why didn't you just look around and then flush the toilet when you were done? You have your own damn apartment, dental hygiene is great and all but it is not so dire that you can't wait an elevator ride to brush your teeth with a sketchy toothbrush.
And the final thing in this scene that pissed me off to no end: the absolute COMPLETE ignorance on Faustines behalf when she was looking for something suspicious. Why exactly did you call her apartment a lair? You're a demon! You don't call your home a lair. And looking around the medicine cabinet why were you surprised not to find potions? She's a person. A teenage girl. She's not gonna keep the bleeping eye of newt in the medicine cabinet. Also, think for a second. One: she's been home for like four hours tops. What would she hide there? Two: why would she put anything important in an unlocked cabinet someone looking for Advil might open. Yes, it all makes sense now. Hide the magical death potion in the cabinet and miraculously, no one will notice.

What else did I find insufferable about this book-
The plot was slow.
The romance was boring and a little forced
Faustine is an idiot and something that ends with "itch." (And let me give you a hint, it ain't witch)

I don’t usually start a series with the third book and I worried I wouldn’t be able to follow the story and enjoy it. That was not the case with Retaliation.

I quickly became immersed in Cordelia’s story and as I got attached to the characters all I was thinking was, I have to read the other books.

It’s been a year and a half since Code Uprising was deactivated and things are back to normal, as much as they can be in a supernatural world.

Cordelia now works for King Sebastian and her romance with the sexy Fay, Jagger, is going strong. The human world is safe from further attacks by Sebastian’s now missing power hungry daughter, Katerina.

But something new is starting to happen. A Haiku is left at a gruesome scene involving the kings assistant that may be connected to Katerina. A school is attacked in Japan, leaving all humans dead and another occurs in the US with casualties over a thousand.

A cloaked figure supplies GRIP with a formula they suspect is targeted towards humans. Could it be Katrina’s doing? And why would she only be targeting humans?

The council has a policy of not getting involved in human matters but they may have to change that if they are being attacked by a supernatural entity. While the humans are unaware of their existence, that may change.

Imogen has created a complex world with many strong voiced characters. While I joined this series late, I was provided with enough background to easily follow their stories and connect with past ones.

There are terrorists, spies, all kinds of supernatural beings and humans co-mingling to get to the bottom of the attacks and the action steps as the attacks escalate.

This book came across as believable. You could take out the supernatural element and have a hack of a good action thriller, but the added otherworldly characters and world made it much more interesting and unpredictable.

I’m sure the many that have read the first two books in the Bonfire Chronicles will love this next installment and those that haven’t will want to read them after this great follow up.

I received this book for my honest review.

I enjoyed this book for the most part, the reason I didn't love it is only because I felt like I was missing information, and that is because I had only read the first 2 books in this Bonfire Chronicles , and apparently the other series the author wrote all tie into this one and I had not read any others. So I am not going to judge on the lack of some info as that is my fault.

I still do not like Faustine, I got to not liking her in the first in series, called Faustine. So when the point of view is from her I am not liking it as much. When the point of view is from Cordelia, I like it alot.

I did like the different paranormal creatures in this, seemed to get more action from the other creatures in this one, and I really liked the tiny trolls.

Overall it's a very interesting world that the author has created. I think I would really like all the other series that tie into this one. Maybe when I get time some day I can get some of the others and try them out. Get some back-story on the characters.

I do recommend this book to paranormal lovers like me.

I give it 4 1/2 out of 5

After reading Retaliation I started pondering what it is about The Bonfire Chronicles series that has set it apart from other series I’m reading or have read. I realized that the majority of my series reading has been mysteries of some sort, either detective or police procedurals, with the same characters doing the same basic thing each book, even though each “case” may be unique enough in the specifics to keep it feeling fresh. Less common are other series where each book builds on what happened previously. But even among those, Rose’s series stands apart in that she reveals more and more detail of her story world, making it more complex with each new installment. In the beginning, with Faustine, the reader was exposed to Rose’s supernatural world and given a glimpse of the governing bodies that exercised control over the supernaturals, but at its heart it was teen drama (even though the teens are strange creatures, like wanderers or those obnoxious trolls).

Each book introduced a few more characters, and the reader learned more about the world. We also went from plots that were amped up high school infighting (the cliques were just formed based on what kind of supernatural being you were) progressing to a major uprising among the world’s supernatural community, to Retaliation, where the conflict within that world is slopping over much more into the human world. The complexity of the world and plot, plus the intensity of the conflict continues ramping up. It keeps me coming back, wondering what is going to happen next.

Her best yet!
With each new adventure I fall deeper in love with these characters. Each one reminding me why I love them so. Cordelia & Jagger are still my favorites, but I always enjoy Faustine & the others as well. Watching them grow up & mature is fascinating (& sometimes infuriating). I simply can not get enough of this fantastically complex world Imogen has created. And sheesh does she know how to leave us begging for more!?! This is definitely the best yet, & I can't wait for the next journey!

This is a great continuation to the Bonfire series and it leaves you with just enough to want more. While some of the loose ends from the previous book are tied up, you have some more that have become loose. I really enjoyed where this story ended because there is a lot that can happen now. I will not say what I think because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who has not read it. It is full of surprises and often you are not sure who is good and who is bad. So I am really looking forward to the next installment.

Have you ever read a story, that was so awesome...and then you get to the end and you are so emotionally involved that you want to throw your book/kindle across the room? Yeah.... this... is...it!
The description does not do the story justice.
I laughed, cried and snorted my way through the book in one sitting.
Faustine is a high quality character written as though you know her...or could be her, you have to read to see.
Rose has done an excellent job!
Loved it!

The threat is not over.

The teams have succeeded in stopping the immediate threat, but even with the capture of Robert and Katherina, the thought of the woman now seated as President of the United States being part of the plan to overtake the control of the supernatural world, things can only get ugly once again.
