1.5 stars! There were moments I thought this was going to be a good book. Sadly, it went sideways. (Possible spoilers ahead with recap)
h was 21. H was 37. h married H about 3 months ago in an arranged marriage h’s dad forced her into.
The book starts where h’s dad has just died, and she is leaving his funeral. She hated her dad, and she’s glad he’s dead. Her half-brother is there, and I guess he also hated the dad. Brother smirks a few things at h about being alpha. h is like whatever, she just wants to get back to H.
We get a little flashback to the day she met H. Instant *Fated Mates* and both were so happy. They start boinking all over the place for the next 3 months. They are married, but not mated, yet. 🤷♀️
Now that h’s dad died, it is expected that H will “Mate” h in a ceremony. So h arrives home after the funeral, and goes to see H. H tells her, “Here are the divorce papers,” and “I never loved you. You were just a young piece I was with to pass the time.”
Then he rejects her. The poor h is so confused because this came out of nowhere. Ugh…she even falls down begging him not to do this (girrrrl, stand up) H even tells her to have some self-respect. 😱🤡
She returns to her dad’s pack. Naturally, she’s sick and sees a healer. Finds out she’s pregnant. The old busybody is holding her hand during this (I clocked this lady right away 😩)
Anyway, h’s mom left her a bunch of money when she died, so h decides to leave town. She’s literally like FK H, FK THIS HOUSE, FK THIS PACK. LET IT ALL BURN! See ya ✌️
Now we get H’s POV. We find out his name/line is cursed. If he actually *mates* -that mate will end up dead. Years ago, H’s dad killed another man. That man was married to a witch. The witch was mad that the dad killed her mate.
So…when H was like 24, he found his *chosen mate* and married her. Loved her. Within 6 months, she brutally died from a sickness. He found his dad’s journals all about the curse. He knows his mom also brutally died from the curse. When he met h, it was supposed to be just an arrangement, but he started to fall for her. He rejected her before the curse could get her. (This was my biggest issue with this plot. The goalposts would change depending on where the author was in the plot. It started as a curse that kicked in when H “mated” someone. Then it moved to when H “loved” someone. Then it was it would jump to heirs. It was confusing)
5 years later, h now has a 5-year-old son. She has a successful business (doing something ?? Idk it didn’t make sense to me) and she DOES NOT date or do relationships. I almost missed this line
“Sex was one thing. I had needs and there were men willing to meet them with no strings attached.”
So sounds like she has not been celibate. GOOD FOR HER 💃
She gets word that her brother is selling the pack, and hundreds are going to lose their house/job. Since the pack was left to her, she decides to go back. She will need a husband, though, because there is no way the council will let some woman rule. 🥴 Need a husband? Well, totally makes sense to go ask the guy who divorced you. *hard eye roll*
H’s life in these 5 years has not been well. GOOD. He basically does not GAF anymore. He’s like a shell of a man. He has looked for h, but hasn’t been able to find her. His BFF is always looking at H like he’s a dumb arse. 😜 The book never said if H was celibate during those 5 years.
h comes back to a volatile situation with her 5-year-old (who also happens to look identical to H). The old busybody lady meets her at the airport. She’ll be keeping the 5-year-old a lot. 🚩 There’s also this super helpful lady named Ava. I guess she’s like a PA. The brother of h grunts out some threats to h that their dad didn’t just mysteriously ☠️, so if h doesn’t want to ☠️, maybe she should butt out.
Later that same day, H gets pulled into a meeting. h is there. He immediately kisses her in front of everyone. Her body is flooded with BBS. h wants them to remarry. Just in name only. These two are exhausting, and I’m only 50% in at this point.
There’s spice because they boink all over the place. This h never stood a chance. She didn’t put up much fight either.
The little boy keeps getting sick. During one of these events, H finds out he’s a daddy. I snorted when he’s like “why didn’t you tell me because I would’ve done everything different” 😬 As you can probably guess, the curse passed to the little boy. H does some weird thing where he cuts his palm and the little boy’s palm. He mixes their blood, and it does *something* to the curse. It’s skipped???? I didn’t get it at all.
NOW H explains to h about the curse. h was also SHOCKED to find out he had a previous “chosen mate.”
The last 40% of the book is about discovering information about the curse. The villains are no surprise. The curse never made any sense to me. This whole thing was a major plot hole because I had so many questions. I have about 20 unanswered questions about this whole plot. The MCs fight the bad guys, and H’s BFF rescued the little boy (he was kidnapped. Can’t have a shifter book without a kidnapping)
Anyway…h ends up being Alpha of her pack. H/h merged the packs into one. They finally have a ceremony and H marks her. During h’s vows, she tells H she’s pregnant again. We have another open-door spice scene. HEA
I did laugh at how the kid found out H was his dad. No warning, nothing……h just blurted it out. I’m positive no therapist would recommend that.
Blah 😑 now I need to take a BC powder because I have a headache.
