I absolutely loved The Beast and the Bough! The world building was great and the descriptions were vivid, which was so fun to read.
The FMC was another huge highlight for me. She was strong and capable in a way that actually made sense for the story and her experiences.
The slow burn was done well, and I appreciated that it didn’t rely on a forced enemies to lovers dynamic just for the sake of a trope. The relationship developed naturally, with real emotional tension and chemistry.
The characters emotions, reactions, and relationships all felt authentic. This was the kind of fantasy romance that completely pulls you in and stays with you afterward!
The FMC was another huge highlight for me. She was strong and capable in a way that actually made sense for the story and her experiences.
The slow burn was done well, and I appreciated that it didn’t rely on a forced enemies to lovers dynamic just for the sake of a trope. The relationship developed naturally, with real emotional tension and chemistry.

THE PROSE. THE SLOW BURN. THE WORLD BUILDING. THE MMC!!! HELLOOOO WHERE IS THE HYPE FOR THIS BOOK?!
First of all, once I heard this story had wolf shifters, I was immediately hooked. This book was insanely refreshing. The world building was so intricate,immersive,gritty, and lush. It was one of the best things about this book. Incredibly well thought out and described. And it had excellent and engaging prose. The uniqueness of the story literally brought me back to life. In my opinion, it’s decently difficult to come up with a unique fantasy book, especially now, but this was perfectly singular.
I have to highlight the FMC in this book. She was sooo likable, one of the best I’ve ever read about. She’s resilient, strong,sharp, and intelligent. But although she’s a capable and independent warrior, she is still soft and full of love.
The MMC in this was seriously swooooooon worthy. I read this a couple weeks ago and I’m still thinking about him. He would literally burn the world to the ground for her. Pathetically down bad (just how I like them). Definitely a “touch her and die” MMC, if that’s your thing 🙂↕️
I loveddddd how this was a true slow burn. A lot of books are marketed as slow burn and the characters get together pretty early in the book, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not my preference. I love reading about the push and pull between the two main characters. Watching the string get pulled taut. The angst, the tension, the yearning, the emotions, it’s all here.
Okay but that ending—I’m going to need book 2 right now. And they better find a way to figure all…THAT…out. Because I’m currently stressed.
I really adored this, I’m manifesting it gets the hype it deserves. This is insanely well written and you can tell the author was fully dedicated to the story. Can’t wait to see where this goes!

It was their story. A love reborn. A bond unbroken.
And let me just say, their story was quite the journey. I don’t think I’ve ever been so stressed out by scenes consecutively like that lol.
The highest stakes, nonstop action, and nail biting situations that kept me at the edge of my seat. A plot that will have your heart racing for so many different reasons. From the pain, the heartbreak, eluding capture, the swoon worthy chemistry and battle scenes that quite frankly, ( you guessed it ) truly stress you tf out lol. Did I emphasize the stress enough? Because Audrei and Kael kept my eyes on a swivel. I read alarmingly fast with this consistent pit in my stomach, and I just knew things were going to continue to hit the fan.
The worldbuilding?! Amazing. I absolutely loved the rich worldbuilding and all the thought that went behind the lore and prophecy. I could vividly picture everything, and my mind was constantly engaged with how fast paced this book was. It was so satisfying to be thrown into this journey filled with all of the things I’ve come to love when reading fantasy, and this ticked all of my boxes.
There also could not have been a better slow burn. The romance that brews between Audrei & Kael was definitely earned, and omg, the tension? Tight like a wire. No one could make a better pair, and I LOVED the banter between them. A man that begs for forgiveness? Yes. Who’s also overprotective and can’t take his eyes off of her? Also yes.
The ending was crazy and I screamed. ( It’s almost 3am and I literally can’t process what just happened after also reading the snippet of book two )

Wow. What a book.
I wish that I had the word to accurately describe my desire to devour this book as quickly as possible while also read it so slowly, I can let it seep into my bones.
The writing, the story, the characters, the world building - all deliver. This is fantasy at its finest and rivals some of the popular fantasy series. Kael is officially on the list of best MMC.
And that ending. I cannot wait for the next in the series.

Such a great read!
This book was so unexpected, and so amazing!! I can't remember the last time I was drawn into a new world and book as quickly as I was with this one. A unique story with great characters and development, and stellar writing. So, so enjoyed this and cannot wait for the next one in the series!

4.5 stars. This was quite wonderful.
I pretty much liked every part of this book, there were only some small things holding it back from being 5 stars.
What I liked:
- The plot was great. This book is definitely setting up bigger moves in book 2, but what was there flowed nicely and allowed for the reader to really fall into the world. Part 1 was such a standout. The author really threw you into the action. Part 1 introduces all the players both good and bad and sets into motion the larger series story. There is so much momentum and tension in part 1. Part 2 slows down a lot to allow for more world building, character and relationship development. Part 3 sees a standoff and cliffhanger to lead us into book 2. I really enjoyed the world, lore and overall mystery. I am desperate for more, but I don't feel like book 1 left us reeling with no answers (something I feel quite often in the romantasy genre).
- The main FMC and MMC are wolderfully done, both separate and together. The FMC's journey is excellent. The author allowed her character to really reflect and grow and did not rush her! I think that was such an important aspect of making this book so good. The MMC has a couple of POV chapters and I wish it had been more! He felt so different from other romantasy MMC's due to his patience and understanding toward the FMC. He observes and listens, allowing her to make her own discoveries. Often in romantasy's I find the MMC's to be just too overbearing and often mansplain her emotions. Kael felt mature. He let the FMC take up her own space. I loved it. Their relationship growth was super well done. It was slow, unrushed, natural and meaningful.
- The villains were quite terrifying. I can't wait to learn more about this in book 2. There are some horror/sci fi threads weaving throughout the bad guy’s side of things. This felt very fresh and new.
- The overall series plot seems to have one of my most favorite tropes/storylines ever. One that is so rarely seen in romantasys. SO excited to see if this plays a larger role in the next books.
- The writing was beautiful! I loved it so much. It was so descriptive without being too metaphor heavy or flowery.
My small things:
- There was a lot of time passing in this as the characters journeyed. This wasn't the issue, this issue I had was the usage of summarizing instead of the reader experiencing scenes. I get using summarizing to describe time passing, but I think there was just a little too much summarizing. I would have loved even more scenes of the FMC and MMC talking and growing their relationship in parts 2 and 3. In the summaries it mentions there conversations and banter, but I wanted to experience that too! This is probably my biggest issue.
- The obvious "plot twist" that the FMC didn't see coming. I put twist in quotes because I don't think its actually supposed to be a surprise to the readers, but how was it a surprise for the FMC?! It was a bit illogical, but I went with it.
- I think part 2 needed just a bit more plot movement/tension, it was a bit of whiplash going from 0-60 in part 1 and then slowing down to like 30 in part 2. There are some excellent action scenes in part 2 though!
I pretty much inhaled this book. I was shook with tension throughout a large portion of this book. It did end how I predicted, but honestly, I wasn't quite sure what the cliffhanger would be until it occurred. I am dying to know what happens next. It feels like book 2 is going to explode in action, lore and world expansion and female rage! I'm ready right now.

I loved this book.
I'd heard nothing but good things before cracking this one open, but I was still surprised by how much I ended up loving it.
I will say it's a bit of a wade through the first 8 chapters, but once it gets going... Its on!
From there, I was so captivated. I loved the pacing, the story itself, the characters and every single quiet moment of depth woven throughout.. Through grief. Through acceptance. Through love.
The grief in this book felt so real to me. The timing, the emotions, the setbacks... All of it was so well timed. M. K. Abben wrote loss in a such a way that made me feel like she truly understood it. Audrei does not simply move on through her grief..she learns to carry it and I found every step of this painful journey to be so heartbreakingly realistic.
I also loved that this story let's time pass. Months go by.. Relationships deepen organically. Trust is tested and then given. Healing is slow. I can't tell you how refreshing that was after reading so many fantasy books where someone crosses an entire continent and saves the world in a week. 🤣
Kael... Lordt hammercy.. I fell for another Kael.
He's a leader. He's capable. He's good with his hands. But my heart fell for this man's patience. He never, not once, tried to rush Audrei or be the one to fix everything for her. He simply walked beside her, respected her choices, and reminded her that she was already whole on her own. I think this is one of the healthiest romances I've read in a long time and boy was it a slow burn. Again, epic timing.
" You are entirely whole without me."
I mean..excuse me??? 😭 Love him
I loved seeing Audrei begin to embrace the other parts of herself. It wasn't about defeat but rather about understanding and acceptance.. Her entire journey felt so poignant and surprisingly relatable.
I also so appreciated all the small details that made these characters feel like actual people. They get tired. They sleep. They recover. All of these little moments made this fantasy feel more relatable and grounded.
And can we have a moment for Vigo? 🥹 I adored that horse.
Logan and kiva were also such a great addition near the end and the found family that started to come together melted my little heart.
This story was epic and full of adventure and prophecy but at its heart I really felt that it was about choosing yourself, choosing healing, and finding the person who sees every fractured piece of you.. And stays anyway. I loved it.

Actually beautiful prose. Thoughtful, intentional writing in nearly every sentence. This is not a copy-paste fantasy world with familiar beats recycled for the algorithm.
If you loved the writing quality of The Ascended but wished the plot would never let up, this is your book. The story moves fast. Like, heart-racing-by-page-thirty fast. There’s a dark sci-fi thread running through it involving experimentation on people that gives the story an unsettling weight that sets it apart.

Justice for Audrei because girl couldnt catch a breath but 3.5 ⭐️ rounded up!
So the things I liked:
- how natural their relationship came to be
- That Kael never pushed her to be in love with him and he noticed the little things, my shaayyylahh 😩
- The world building was great! it was immersive without being too descriptive, repetitive
- the writing was well done!
- It’s super fast paced
Things that I couldve lived without:
- her personality was inconsistent… im sure because of her traumatic event but for someone who likes to be in the shadows, she sure be saying a lot and giving herself unwanted attention. I almost dnf when she kept being a nuisance and getting HERSELF into trouble.
- The miscommunication/being bounded to not say whatever was pretty annoying and fmc is dense as a brick lol Im yelling at my screen like JUST SAY IT or OPEN YOUR EYES DAWG
- I get that them training together is part of the build up but I had to skip the last few
- lets just say… poor Allie
- precipice x 2 … I hate this word with my entire soul
- their first time together was kindof underwhelming 😬
- “their banter felt like breath of fresh air in her lungs” …odd choice tbh
Oh I also didnt know its a shifter romance. Not bad or good, just wasnt expecting that I guess.

Things that I couldve lived without:
- her personality was inconsistent… im sure because of her traumatic event but for someone who likes to be in the shadows, she sure be saying a lot and giving herself unwanted attention. I almost dnf when she kept being a nuisance and getting HERSELF into trouble.
- The miscommunication/being bounded to not say whatever was pretty annoying and fmc is dense as a brick lol Im yelling at my screen like JUST SAY IT or OPEN YOUR EYES DAWG
- I get that them training together is part of the build up but I had to skip the last few
- lets just say… poor Allie
- precipice x 2 … I hate this word with my entire soul
- their first time together was kindof underwhelming 😬
- “their banter felt like breath of fresh air in her lungs” …odd choice tbh
Oh I also didnt know its a shifter romance. Not bad or good, just wasnt expecting that I guess.

Each sentence feels like its own work of art, the wording is descriptive in a way that really paints such a vivid picture for the reader. You’ll fall in love with all the characters, their arcs, their secrets, their grief, their love…her characters are raw and real and you really walk through the story with them. The pacing is perfect, nothing is rushed and the plot moves along at a pace that keeps the reader engaged and wanting more. The slow burn romance between the two main characters is such a beautiful journey too- plenty of witty banter and playfulness that compliments heavier aspects of this book. 10/10 absolutely incredible. I had such a blast reading this book and getting lost in it. I cannot wait for the next one!

This is book one of the Unbroken Thread series. . From the start of the book, you are drawn in and can’t put it down. Each page gives you more hints about the secrets in the story. This book has a strong, well-developed and an interesting story line with twists and unexpected turns that keep you reading and turning the pages. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. Amazing world building that is detailed and imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other. Strong, interesting, and fascinating characters that are well developed and diverse. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with magic, danger, politics, intrigue, and subterfuge. The plot thickens, the suspense builds, and the passion erupts! I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. My heart is in shambles, that ending just ripped it to pieces. And I loved every second of it.
This book honestly hooked me from page 2 and didn’t let up. Not only is the FMC, Audrei, and absolute power house of a character she also goes through a lot of pain/grief and being along side her through that journey was beautiful. The MMC, was so refreshing, patient, and just steady. He let Audrei hold her own and be who she needed to be and to find herself while still being there when she needed.
This book has prophecies, wolf shifters, magic, political intrigue, a beautiful world, and so many secrets. Be prepared to be screaming at them to “just kiss already” while also just loving their shared time and banter together.

Only things I wanted more of was the magic and insight into the prophecy and politics and how the governing entities came to be what they are. But it’s also book 1, so I fully expect a lot of that to filter into book 2.

The Beast and the Bough was beautifully written with strong characters. The world-building was well done as well, I didn’t feel lost with it and things were described in perfect moments that it didn’t feel thrown at us during random times.
This was a SLOWWW burn - one that was full of tension and so worth it. Kael was so kind, he felt genuine and their relationship wasn’t forced. He understood what she was going through and allowed her to grieve.

This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I really felt connected to the story and the characters and wanting to find out what would happen next. The storyline was beautifully written, and I found myself consistently saying to myself, "just one more chapter" when I clearly should be sleeping. The writing style is creative and descriptive and flows so well that I found myself flying through the pages, and now I'm left waiting (not so) patiently for the next book. I would highly recommend this book if you love fantasy with a perfect amount of spice, and main characters that are complex and irresistible.

I loved this book and can’t wait for the second installment! The only thing I didn’t like is my own fault - I got through the book so fast and now have to wait what feels like forever for the next set in the series! The story feels fresh, and the world is ripe for exploration. There is a combination of old world charm, magic, and mystical creatures. It all feels familiar in a good way, but in a new world that has unlimited potential. As I made my way through the book I felt like the plot never let up and there was action and creativity on every page. Without any spoilers, you must read this new book to find your next favorite romantasy characters. Fantastic job M.K. Abben!

WOW! What an absolute banger of a debut novel! Wolf shifters, fated mates, prophecy, rich lore and world building, magic, beautifully fleshed out characters, and the most delectable slow burn romance that had me screaming "just kiss already!!".. 😫 What's not to love?! This book had me up until 2am because I could NOT put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next! The delicious tension happening between the fmc and the mmc, the will they won't they, and the suspense of everything else going on in the story, I was on the edge of my seat! I cannot wait for book 2!

The Beast and the Bough is a dramatic, character driven fantasy that leans all the way into its emotions. The will they/won’t they characters are wonderfully full of tension and longing, and the thread pays off in a satisfying way. I loved how the story builds toward a big, cinematic finale and then drops a cliff hanger that makes it impossible not to reach for the next book (how long do we have to wait?!?). A dramatic, swoony fantasy ride with a finale that absolutely sticks the landing.

Not my typical genre but this book drew me in and I couldn’t stop reading. The writing was poetic and the story is beautifully written. The story is exciting and the characters are so lovable.
