Before the guilt. Before the mistakes. Before the heartbreak.
Maggie Torres did what she was told. Her mind was a cage of expectations, but her eyes held the brightness of a clear sky. Sam Wilson was the opposite: a hollow vessel for other people's ambitions, drifting through life with a dead soul. They were two halves of a story that hadn't been written yet. Until one day changed the trajectory of their lives forever.
this was so good omg Even though i loved and enjoyed book one this is so much better by MILES I can’t wait till we see the continuation of maggiesam next February!!

🇬🇧
I wasn't ready to read this book—or to review it—because I knew it would make me cry a lot.
We had already "met" the protagonists in the first book, though we were unaware that they, too, had a past—just like Nova and Vincent. This book was essential for getting to know them and their history, for understanding them and preparing for the next installment; the thing is, once you read this one, you’ll immediately want the next. I couldn't put it down; after a brief pause, I managed to devour it in just a few hours. Just as with the first Nova and Vincent book, I was able to connect deeply and get swept up in the emotions of Maggie and Sam—characters I’ll analyze fully after reading the next book.
The entire story was an ongoing struggle caused by their families, neither of which was exactly normal; ironically, it was the moments when they were "happy" that made everything even harder to bear. I’d describe this book as an emotional rollercoaster. I’m certain the next one will break my heart and mend it all at once—which is why I’m telling you: just READ it.
This book could’ve been 1000 pages and it still wouldn’t have been enough. Book 1 was so good BUT THIS??? Other worldly. I didn’t want it to end which is why it took me a couple days to read because I was taking my time with it. Everyone read it but I devoured and studied it. Maggiesam come home 😭😭😭😭😭
im in tears. i read this in one sitting. omg maggiesam come home to me. i cant even. theyre so precious. also ty to dehlia for the arc😭😭ill write proper review when my tears stop streaming down my face omg . need the 2nd book asap
I was so excited to finally be able to know Maggie and Sam’s story! Especially because I was so curios to know what happened that Maggie changed her name and reinvented herself completely. The story begins as we follow Harriet (Maggie) and Sam’s childhood, seeing their-very complex and toxic- relationships with each of their families. Honestly half of the time while reading I just felt bad for them both. Watching them both suffer and forced to grow up in such toxic environments has heartbreaking. When Harriet and Sam finally meet, the story got way more interesting for me. I loved seeing them bicker and slowly get closer to each other. There were some really cute scenes between them that had me smiling as I was reading them. They are just exactly what the other needed and i was happy for them that they finally found that. I did wish we dug a bit deeper into Harriet’s mental health, I feel like I could’ve connected to her better if I saw more of that side of her. I knew this book was just the beginning of them and that it was about to end in a cliffhanger, and I was waiting to see what finally broke them so when we got to that part I was just a bit disappointed. I understand why Harriet reacted the way she did but after she discovered that Kathrine (her sister) lied about Sam cheating when she was the one who actually cheated I wouldn’t be so quick to trust everything that comes out of her mouth. But Harriet somehow still believed it. I did love seeing her connecting with Nova at the end🥹 and I cannot wait to see what happens next!
Would recommend! If you’re looking for an emotional romance🫶
a huge part of this story was just pure suffering because both of their families were so fucked up that they managed to completely destroy their mental health 💀 but it was so beautiful to watch them fall in love despite the fact that their whole relationship started in that awful parental limbo.
their friendship? it’s the most precious thing in the world. and even though their relationship lasted for such a short time, it managed to heal me in so many ways ❤️🩹 they’re just so incredibly dear to me.
even though this ending completely destroyed me, i actually think it was for the best that they ended things because they still have SO MUCH to work through individually before getting into such a deep relationship.
but it comforts me to know that they ended up in the same place at the same time, and that now they’re surrounded by friends who are going to make such a huge difference in their lives. novavincent are going to be their future godparents 🤞🏻 I JUST KNOW IT.
i absolutely loved getting to know them as harrietsam, but now i can’t wait to keep following their story as maggiesam too.
obs: vincent being introduced here in that scene with his aunt, and nova being introduced too when sam told her that she would still have the love of a real sister... this is SO invisible string 🤏🏻
[arc] 4,5⭐️ i genuinely loved this book. being able to learn more about Harriet and Sam’s backstory was incredible, and finding out about all the shit they’ve been through… Harriet is officially my protected child. she deserves everything and absolutely none of the bullshit that, that bitch, Katherine put her through. sorry… moving on. i really love Sam and Hassan’s friendship. please give me more of them!! and Jade— oh Jade. my twin, who loves Snoopy just as much as i do. Cutie. i love her. and i got just as jealous of their love as i did while reading Secret Love Song, but okay, i guess i’m gonna die alone 😭 BUT i lovedddd this book so much, and I’m SO excited for the next ones. AND THE ENDING—OH MY LORDDD. JEJDJSBEKSBEHDBSJ. I WAS SO HAPPY!!! THE CONNECTION!!! i’m really, really excited for Siren Sounds.
[ARC review ] First thank you to the author for the arc! I’m so so so grateful💜💜💜 I’m absolutely in love with this series and these characters, Maggie and Sam’s backstory is so much better than what i could’ve imagined i love them both with all my heart The writing is really good, the short chapters kept me hooked the whole way through and i loved the pace of the book, it was perfect!
4.5 ⭐ (arc) thank u so much to the author for trusting me with this copy!!
i loved this so much!!! i was so excited to know maggie's backstory but i didn't expect it to be this heartbreaking 😭😭😭. I NEED book 2 right now and maggie to heal properly, also sam's trauma is overlooked and he definitely needs to talk about it more. love you maggiesam 😭💗
(arc) thank you so much to the author for the arc!
i’ve been wanting to know maggie and sam’s story for so long, so i was really happy i finally got to read about them. i liked how the story starts by focusing on each of them individually and the struggles they went through growing up before their paths finally cross.
because of that, though, i’d honestly consider this more of an introduction/novella to what’s really going to happen next rather than a full story, which is why i can’t rate it any higher.
i’m so excited for the next book because i feel like that’s where everything is going to get angstier and messier, and where their second chance really begins… and i already know i’m going to eat that up!!
Everything made sense in this book, why Maggie is the way she is, why Sam calls her Evangeline, why she fits so well with Nova and Vincent, it was a gut wrenching read, though, had to stop many times because I saw myself in both these characters, and that's a gift the writer has, I cannot wait for february to come so soon, I already miss my maggiesam and want to see Nova through Maggie's eyes knowing my girls have the sisterhood both always deserved and found in each other, also everyone else protecting their Maggie.
Also was NOT expecting Sam to have dated THAT particular person, it was a incredible detail that just kept me hooked, i've read it in one sitting and I kinda regret because february seems soooooooooooooooo far away, but I can and will keep rereading these babies.
this book was genuinely really good! i actually saw an improvement in the writing since the previous book!
Harriet is such a complex character, being able to see what she went through was both intriguing and painful. I love her so much!!! i wanted to hug her through out 99% of the book.
Sam is the sweetest guy ever, the affection he has for his little sister was the most precious thing i’ve read.
Also i loved Hassan in this book, i hope we get to see more of him.
The ending gave me actual chills, and i can’t wait for the next one to come!!
↳ ᡴꪫ ⸝⸝ my heart is so full of maggiesam. it is literally maggiesam shaped. this was adorable i really liked seeing how their relationship progressed but the ending BROKE MY HEART. IM SO UPSET.
🩰 the characters 𓏲 ࣪₊♡𓂃 maggie and sam are both such easy characters to love. baby maggie was such a cutie but she kept making me so sad, fuck her family. her being a dancer was so dear to me as a dancer myself. especially with her liking hip hop like wow youre so me. but her insecurities :( prettiest girl in the world she didnt deserve what she was told. and sam!! he's so sweet to maggie. first time they met she was yelling at him and he still called her pretty. and the scene where he saved maggie GOSHH I WAS SOBBING. i just wish he never got with katherine omg that bitch can die.
⋆ the side characters - katherine i hate you. literally stole maggies personality to get sam to like her LIKE UGH SHUT UP!! - i really like gabriel and ayanne, theyre so sweet to maggie - also hassan!! he really cares for sam i like their friendship
१˒🏍️⋆ plot - i was really shocked at first on how it was lay out, but i really liked it. i just really missed my sanfran babies :(
- february please come sooner!
some quotes ୭౿ ! ◟✦ i've never been this happy in my life, i've never felt so loved, and i don't want this to end. i don't think i could bear the idea of this ending, because i can't think of myself without him. i never thought i could make it to nineteen and now i can't wait to send the rest of my life in his arms.”
◟✦ “you think i'm weird?” i ask after a quiet moment. “no,” he says, shaking his head instantly as his eyes lock back onto mine. “i think you're gorgeous.”
◟✦ “i think you're the most gorgeous lotus flower i've ever seen bloom in my whole life. no matter what difficulties you've had to go through, or how many you'll have to deal with from now on.”
chasing cars is the second book of the san francisco's lullabies series and follows harriet brown (?) and sam wilson. i was super surprised when i started the book and sudently we are reading the pov of a nobody named harriet i was definitely not expecting that. hari/maggie is my babygirl who deserves the world and i cried thinking about how she's completely alone in the world until she meets sam and nova (loved the final scene of my babies). sam pmo SO MUCH when he started dating that bitch, i honestly wished he would die and let me make maggie happy... but that's okay at least he was sweet w maggie when the time came and i forgave him. that said, siren sounds come home i need me entire family back

Second, I appreciate addressing how wounds run deep enough will warp peoples identity of themselves it turns into a belief that can be this unbreakable habit to self destruction. while this is a short read we begin too undo the layers of these two individuals as they give each other a chance to be on the opposite end where they are not prey allows them to have this comfortable banter you could possibly call it.
in some way this author depiction is why I find tremendously refreshing for me coming back and being reminded finishing maggiesam.
What surprises me isn't that surprising okay! ik! I just really embrace how this author like many have wanted to be responsible in removing stigmas as challenging as it is especially if it has affected someone personally when writing and fleshing out characters etc in the process before it gets finalized. I can't make sense or rather am not making sense at all. THOUGH this is a author to watch out for and worth giving a chance always. this story's outlook on how far the pain people inflict on you moves us as participants in our lives. so reminder there's (TW's) though this isn't done in a rigid manner as shock value or to have readers coddle characters in turn mischaracterizing a character behaviors/emotions imo.
Also at points I did have to remind myself to give (maggie) grace in her pov because I did struggle understanding her choices during the periods of separation from her family where she'd be healing and then few scenes later let panic & their toxicity influence her. Again this is story needed which Im so glad we have authors giving empathy able to take timeless hardship we can all realize and be the driving force for change in our own way. Even if the ending left me agitated (respectfully) I love that there's more on the way for these kids to have an ending they truly deserve.
There are not enough good words in the english dictionary to describe my hatred towards Sams father and Maggies parents, they deserve every horrible thing in this world 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 ESPECIALLY KATHERINE bitch you need to suffer eternal pain, don’t show ur face round these ends ❌❌❌❌❌ she wishes she could be Maggie, but Maggie solos that girl 👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼 Adrien also needs his ass whooped, deserves the death penalty—There’s not enough words to describe the vile man that Sam’s father is, public torture and execution is what he needs. I love Sam and Maggie😢😢😢 They’re so disgustingly adorable and heartbreaking. I just love how Sam, even having his own problems, cared so much about Maggie and protected her from the evil people (Adrien, Katherine, her parents e.g.) I also loved his friendship with Hassan and how he defended him against those bullies even if it took him a bit cuz of his nasty ass dad. And Maggies real parents are truly Gabriel and Ayanna trust, they’re not her biological ones but they’re her parents eitherway bc they were so sweet to her and supportive and cared about her like ugh adopt her pls ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️ February come faster bc i need to read their next book immediately—I also hope we see Ayanna and Gabriel again too in siren sounds 🤍🤍🤍 Dance prodigy, Maggie Torres, you have my entire soul 🤍
One of my favorite releases of the year!! I was already so intrigued by Maggie and Sam’s interactions in Secret Love Song and this book completely exceeded my expectations emotionally. Their story is so deep and full of trauma. In this book we finally learn where Harriet Brown’s trauma comes from. She spent her whole childhood being rejected by her family and constantly trying to earn their approval. Sam on the other hand grew up under his father’s pressure but eventually stopped caring about other people’s opinions and the expectations they had for his future. I loved his relationship with his best friend Hassan and his sister Jade. Harriet and Sam find each other during the loneliest time of their lives and fall in love. The ending was such a plot twist and now I can’t wait for the next book in February.
5 🌟!!!!! (arc) Thank you so much to the author for trusting me with an copy 🥹🪷
" I love you, Harriet Brown. I don’t think I’ll ever move on. Ever. You’re in my fucking system. In my soul. Everywhere.”
As a wise man said (Samuel Derek Wilson) you're in my soul. That's me with them! They're in my soul 🥹 they're story has touched me in way nothing else will ever be able to!
The writing talents of the author are truly UNMATCHED!! The way things are being described are magical and you know when a book just flows and everything turns into a movie. Yeah! Thats this book for me!!🩷
(arc) thank you for letting me in on this world <3
this book works more as an introduction and i might say its more like a novella to introduce you the characters, their backstories, their families and their past. it digs a lot on their struggles, who they date before, their relationships with their siblings and parents, and how they were treated on their childhood/teenage years before they’re in the present (which we read in secret love song)
i was so thrilled to read maggiesam, i didn’t expect any of what they told me on this book to be honest. cannot wait to read siren sounds to know how their love story is going to continue!
I loved this book; it was a great introduction to the characters. It was nice to read about Maggie and Sam's lives separately and also together. Learning about their traumas and heartbreaking stories broke my heart; I just want them to be happy! 😭😭
It was a good read, and honestly, I am going to protect these characters from everything and everyone. I feel so connected to each of them in one way or another.
I loved this so much!! 😭😭🩷 For me, the characters were really easy to connect and bond with. Mags made me so sad when she asked if she was a cute elephant 😢😢😢😢. Kathryn pmo rlly bad. The writing since the first book, which I still enjoyed, has definitely improved noticably as well.
