Rate this book
If you're a teenager in a small, rural area, how do you exist when your eccentric, free-spirited parents are the town freaks everyone laughs at?

For sixteen-year-old Rainbow Honeywell—or Rain, as she insists on being called—the answer was to become the queen of all pranks. She never wanted to be a troublemaker, but the label quickly stuck when everyone in Huntsville, Kansas, became a target. All she wanted was to deflect the negative attention off her parents, but Rain's plan backfired to the max, landing her in a heap of trouble with the local authorities and expelled from high school.

An unexpected inheritance offers Rain an opportunity for a new beginning when she and her family move across the country to the quaint beach community of Turtle Bay, Florida.

Determined to make the best of her second chance, Rain vows to walk the straight and narrow, hoping her parents will fly under the radar while she soaks up some fun in the sun, sandy beaches, and hot, tanned guys. Unfortunately, she picks the wrong new friends, and a late night party lands her back in the kind of trouble she had been hoping to avoid. As the newbie in town with a record, Rain takes the brunt of the punishment when an unforgiving judge chooses to make an example out of her and slaps her with enough community service hours to keep her busy until she is old and gray.

Facing the harsh reality of paying for the actions of others while atoning for her own past sins, Rain is paired up with Josh Shaw, a judgmental local lifeguard whose love for the beach and the environment is eclipsed only by his distaste for those who trash it. As far as Josh is concerned, Rain is guilty and got what she deserved, regardless of her side of the story. To make matters worse, a tropical storm sits in the Atlantic, threatening to wreak havoc on the small beach community.

Things slowly change as Rain begins to appreciate her surroundings through Josh's eyes, proving she is not the person he thinks she is. Their feelings for one another blossom as the tropical storm grows into a hurricane and bears down on Turtle Bay. With impending danger looming, the small beach community must come together in order to ride out the storm.

”I wasn’t happy with all my choices in Turtle Bay, but no one could say I hadn’t learned from them.”

Tiffany King delivered a well written, low on the drama teen story. Sadly I’m about 30 years too old to be excited about what I read…

description
(Thank you Feifei for the gif!)

Still the characters are well developed and the turtles and the environment were poignantly represented. Rain was a very likable heroine as was her parents and all the supporting characters.

In my opinion, this story is totally safe for ages 14 and up and reminded me of the movie my daughters like called The Last Song with Miley Cyrus.

I wanted something quick and easy to read and this was perfect. A cute little beach read that probably would have been perfect to read while on an actual beach, but this dreary November weather needed some sun.

Rain, short for Rainbow but don't call her that, moves from Kansas to Florida with her parents after getting in trouble one too many times. Hoping to start over, her family movies into a small house right on the beach in Turtle Bay. However, trouble can't seem to stay away and Rain soon finds herself completing community service hours by cleaning up the beach. But the broody lifeguard she works with makes it a little better - only a little because they just can't stop butting heads.

The book does take a detour from the cute and fluffy when a hurricane threatens the small coastal town. The damage the hurricane leaves affects everyone and adds levity to the story. But it also showcased humanity at its best with everyone wanting to help out. I loved the sense of comradery between everyone and how much everyone wanted to help.

I also adored Rain's parents. As a teenager, I can see why she would be embarrassed by them. When I was a teen, I would probably cringe at their level. But they were present and loved their daughter and each other. Their most important thing was to make sure Rain felt free to be herself. It was a beautiful portrayal of a family and added so much to the plot.

And let's not forget the romance. Josh - once he warmed up - was a sweetie. I absolutely loved how much he loved the environment and cared about the wildlife. His fascination with the sea turtles just warmed my heart. Now I just want to go lounge at the beach, but instead, I'll just grab my blanket and hunker down with my next read.

I was really excited to read Tiffany King's latest book. Her books always have the best characters and a unique storyline. And that is exactly what I found in Turtle Bay.

Kings characters are the ones that get overlooked by the popular crowd and have interesting circumstances. They always feel real and genuine.

Rain has some pretty interesting parents that any teen would be trying to hide from their judgmental peers. Her less than perfect behavior is a ploy to avoid the ridicule of those peers. And her attempts to recover from her mistakes finds lots of problems before any real recover can happen. Felt very true to life.

Josh is adorable. His passion for the environment helps him deal with the lacks he has at home. His job has become his family and life. He's attracted to Rain but he's patient and sweet as he gets to know her. Josh is a good guy. Not a jerk or a bad boy, a good guy - and he's exactly what Rain needs.

The story is sweet. As these two get over their not so perfect first meeting and the misunderstanding that lands Rain in community service, they get to know each other and support each other. What I loved was that they each accepted the other for who they were. And they both learned from the other in ways that helped them deal with the issues they were facing.

Something that's really different about this one is the climax to the story. I can't really say the details but I will say that the relationship between these two was not at risk but strengthened by the events of the story. I enjoyed that. Not every relationship needs to hang by a thread before a couple can love each other and move forward. It was nice.

This is a great Young Adult story that young and old can enjoy. If you love that type of read, then make sure you check this one out. It's worth it.

What a sweet awesome story..
Loved every moment...

Oh guys!! This book was just awesome!! From the moment I started it and I was introduced to Rain..or should I say her real name as Rainbow...Nah...she would be upset with me for doing that... LOL...
Anyway, meeting Rain and her hippie parents in the beginning of this refreshing light read of a girl that really trying to find her true self. While she is an open person, she still struggles with with accepting some of her own identity issues...
But, come on...what teenager doesn't, right??
But the best thing about Rain being able to discover herself is the fact that she is moving to Turtle Bay and OMG...life at the beach sounds like heaven..
*snickers*
Poor Rain...although she is trying to start on the right foot in this new place, she definitely ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time...
We all have had moments like that and all you can do is shake your head and sigh...
This is a huge turning point for Rain in the story and I am really glad this happened. We get to dive even more in to who she is and what she stands for.
Plus...not to mention that the gorgeous HAWT lifeguard Josh is there and Ahhhh!!! Man what a dream!!
But, even though things seem to be looking up, things aren't always sunny at the beach and lets just say a storm is a brewing...
A great sweet story that truly shows the strength of a young girl coming of age...
Loved it and highly recommend!!

Tiffany King has written another Young Adult book! This fact alone makes me happy, but that comes second to the fact that I truly enjoyed this book. When I first discovered King’s writing, it was through her YA books (Wishing For Someday Soon was the first). Her more recent books have been New Adult, and great in their own right. King’s return to YA exceeded my expectations. She definitely has a knack for it.

One of the greatest strengths Turtle Bay has is its characters. Rain/Rainbow was one of my favorite main characters I’ve read in King’s books. Her parents add some quirkiness to the story, but aren’t used for comic relief which can be a path some authors might take with “hippie” parents like Butch and Buttercup. They’re great parents and Rain’s relationship with them, while a bit strained, is enviable.

Josh is also a great character, even if I wasn’t too sure about him at the start. He soon won me over though. Without many of the other secondary characters, this book wouldn’t have been what it is. I’m missing many of them, even so soon after finishing the book.

I also thought that the author did a great job of setting up the Florida beach town setting, with its class issues, and other issues. I think incorporating environmental awareness into the whole thing was done perfectly, as well. While Josh’s and Rain’s parents are very vocal about their love for our world, none of it came across as preachy or too “in your face”. It was a great plot device and a good choice for the beach setting at the same time.

Tiffany King has won me over again, bringing joy and some tense, and even sad, moments. Turtle Bay is going to stay with me for some time and has made it’s way high on my list of favorite books.

I love Tiffany King's writing. I can't put it into words exactly but it leaves me feeling....better. It just is a palette cleanser.
Turtle Bay is no exception.

Rain (just Rain...) is one of those "kids" who is much wiser than her years. At just 16, she is the parent in her family in many ways. Don't get me wrong, she HAS parents and they do parent her (in a way that I would've loved to be parented) but she's a typical teen and is very much embarrassed by their eccentric ways.

Then there is Evan, and Josh, and Farrah. There is just such a great ensemble of characters, which is one of the things I love most of Ms. King's writing. She always makes it feel as if I'm hanging out with my friends.

I laughed (a lot), I cried (I totally admit it) and in the end, I was left goofy smiling. To me, is the sign of a good book.

Sun, sand, surf, cute boys, kissing.... what more could I want in a YA book? Turtle Bay comes through with all of these and I absolutely want to get in my car and drive down to Florida tomorrow. I really enjoyed this one. It was fun, sweet and made me long for the days of summer.

Our main character Rain has just moved with her rather eccentric parents to Florida in hopes of making a fresh start. Rain had gotten into some trouble and now she is looking to turn things around and hopefully find her niche in Turtle Bay, Florida. I really enjoyed Rain's character. King does such a great job of making her relatable. She's an everyday teen who wants to fit in and it's hard for her to do so with her parents being the way they are. I loved Rain's parents. They were awesome. Sure, they could be pretty over the top, so I definitely could see where Rain was coming from, but they do love their daughter unconditionally and Rain sees that, no matter how much they embarrass her with their antics. They have always marched to the beat of their own drum, so naturally as a teenager, it's hard for Rain to accept and embrace their weirdness. As the story progresses though, we see Rain have some very real moments with her parents and I like that their relationship is so open. Even when Rain is expressing her feelings to them, they don't ignore her- instead they listen to her and decide what they can do as a family.

Rain ends up finding herself in some trouble here in Turtle Bay not long after she moves there. Unfortunately, it was more of a wrong place, wrong time scenario. Still, Rain must face the consequences of her actions, which forces her to deal with a guy she met her first day on the beach, who was a real jerk to her. Josh is a lifeguard and an environmentalist and immediately makes assumptions about Rain's character. These two do not get off on the right foot and there is some serious angry tension between them. I ended up loving Josh though. It was wrong of him to make those assumptions about Rain, but things do get ironed out between them and I really ended up liking their relationship. It was sweet and they spend quite a bit of time together getting to know one another and helping out on the beach. Between him and Farrah, Rain really has it going on in the friend department.

I loved seeing Rain find something she was so passionate about. She loves to read and write, but she discovers she also loves helping out at the beach. The whole community comes together to help make preparations for an incoming hurricane and it was just awesome to see how amped up everyone was to ensure everything was ready. Even Rain's parents jumped in and started helping out too! The overall dynamic of this book was just a feel good one. I loved the sweetness of the story and that Rain ended up turning a crappy situation into an awesome one and she has found a home in Turtle Bay with her family and new friends. My only wish is that I could have read this one with my toes in the sand down on the beach....

At First Sight
The cover of this book made me totally flip out honestly. If it isn't blatantly obvious from this blog, I love anything to do with the beach and beach books are no exception. I love this cover and have been dying to read the book since the minute I saw it.

Characters and relationships
I felt like this book was driven by the different relationships in it. I loved Rain and Josh both and it was fun to watch their relationship go from where it started, which wasn't good, to, well, where it went (no spoilers here) it was wonderful. I really loved the other cast of characters that were in the book as well. Rain's parents were eccentric to say the least, but also they were very loving toward her and respectful of her as well. I LOVED Farrah, who ended up being a great friend to Rain, and wouldn't mind visiting Turtle Bay again and having a book for Farrah to maybe find love herself. I loved the way the relationships in this book were all centered around their different parental situations which was a lot of what drove their actions which is so true to life that I really enjoyed it.

Is this a kissing book?
Yep! Hello...Tiffany King knows how to write a decent kiss and I love how she can keep things just right for a YA audience at the same time. I'll just say that Josh was pretty swoony!

Don't leave me hanging
This is definitely a stand alone book but there is much room for companion novels for other characters which I would love. I would love to see a prequel type book for Larry even. These characters are just so lovable!

The Best Gems
Moving
Sand Bagging
Parties
Sea Turtles
Making Friends
Hippie Van
Finding Someone To Love

The Sum Up
From the moment I saw this book I knew it was going to be a must read for me. Tiffany King certainly has my number when it comes to writing and I can't express how much I adored Turtle Bay. From start to finish it kept me wanting to read (and ignore my chores) and can't imagine a teenage girl out there that wouldn't enjoy this fantastic beach book on their summer vacation this year!

Tiffany has written another Cute, Fun & Sweet YA book which I love. YA has always been my first genre love since I became a booknerd!

A complete misunderstanding, abrupt assumptions, and a few catty comments have Josh and Rain at Odds at the beginning of this story. By some dumb luck of being at the wrong place with some not so nice people finds Rain in trouble and now having to pay for her mistakes. She is thrust into Josh's life on a daily basis and having to pay her debt to society. Over the coming weeks these two learn more about each other and true feelings flourish between them. They realize they have more in common than they thought. Rain comes from a quirky family who don't live life like most people do. Josh has always had to rely on himself for everything and care for his life as well since his dad is not present much. Josh has goals and strong beliefs and Rain is learning more about life and herself since Josh walked. Something brewing in the distance ends up bringing Josh and Rain together more so than ever.

So RUN NOW & GRAB yourself a copy TODAY since it's LIVE!!! You won't regret this Sweet read!!!

There is something about YA. It doesn’t matter your age, where you’re from, or anything else, these are the books that make you fall in love with reading. Tiffany King’s, Turtle Bay, is no exception.

At some point in our lives our parents have embarrassed us to no end. Rain feels this way about her parents daily because let’s just say they march to the beat of their own drum. She tries to take the focus off of them in her Kansas town, and gets into trouble. When her parents are left a house in Turtle Bay, they see it is a chance for her to start over. She’s not excited at all, but soon realizes this place isn’t so bad.

Once in Turtle Bay, she looks for a job, relaxes at the beach, and even makes a few friends. These friends lead to a turn of events in her summer, and will also bring someone into Rain’s life that understands her and her family completely.

Turtle Bay is a story of family, accepting it’s okay to be different, tragedy, natural disaster, love, and hope. If you are looking for a read that is jam packed with emotions this is the book for you!

This is one of the best YA novels I have read in a long time! I fell in love with Butch and Buttercup right off the bat. They are the quirky, funny, eccentric parents that everyone wants (or thinks they want). Rain is the girl that I think everyone can relate to in some way. With her wittiness and humor, I wanted to be her best friend too. The story that unfolds between Rain and Josh is sweet and beautiful. I think it will remind readers of their first love.

The story moved at just the right pace for me. There are some intense, heartbreaking scenes towards the end, but for me it just made the story more true to life. I have also always been fascinated with turtles. I loved that the story involved information on sea turtles and their struggle to survive. I HIGHLY recommend this book for all YA lovers!

I have been waiting for this book for too long! I genuinely woke up at 5 am to purchase it... And it didn't disappoint! I loved this book, it was a quick read with a great story line. I also now want to go to Florida! As well as a chocolate cabinet!

My only few quirks was that often the writing style was really American! As a British reader some of the phrases irked me a little, and I did have to translate to my slang, I also felt like I could find a lot of the traits from her other books hidden within.

But that didn't make it a bad book at all! I still read it in a school day and loved it.. Next YA Tiffany?!

4 stars -- I absolutely adore Ms. King's YA contemporary books, they are some of my favourites in this genre. And for some reason while I bought this book immediately when it came out, I didn't get to it right away. But it was exactly what I always love about her books, so I shake my head at myself for leaving it so long. (also, it's currently only 99 cents people -- if you love YA contemps, I recommend checking it out)

This is probably going to be a bit of a lackluster review, b/c I finished this book 2 days ago, and have read 2 more books since then...I hate doing that, but travel always screws me up. What can I say? The romance was definitely sweet, and I liked how the relationship progressed from intrigue to "sort of" hate to understanding to crush to more. It was the perfect YA romance in my opinion. And we definitely got enough of it to keep me satisfied.

I really enjoyed both Rain and Josh, though this was really Rain's story. Rain could have easily annoyed me with her viewpoints on Josh and the aftermath of the party, but I thought in the end she was written very authentic teenager, and it didn't last so long as to drive me nuts. Just enough to make her believable, but then give us some growth.

There were some tiny side plots that I was a bit confused about. I felt like Farrah was going to have a bigger part in the story, and then she just didn't. I really feel like she has more to say. Maybe there was an initial thought to write more books and make it series-esque, and then it just didn't pan out? That makes me sad, b/c I would love to learn more of Farrah's story. And then there was the Evan storyline. Part of me liked what was brought there, but I felt somehow off about it. Like I wasn't quite sure what all it brought to the story as a whole. But I also read this book off and on with a big break in the middle, so that sometimes messes with how I see the story as a whole.

In the end the part that stood out to me the most and just totally made me love this story were Rain's parents, Butch and Buttercup. I LOVE when YA's actually have parents that EXIST and are important to the story. So many times they're just written around and it's just not realistic. And while Butch and Buttercup were unbelievably unique and different, they were great parents and I really loved what they brought to Rain's growth.

All in all, it was exactly what I was looking for from Ms. King. She writes a lot of different ages, from YA to Adult, but for me it's her YAs where she shines.

I've been in a YA mood lately and Turtle Bay just totally hit the bill for me. It's a sweet, wonderful gem of a YA novel. The story flowed from beginning to end, with a sweet uncomplicated plot, an interesting heroine, an intriguing good-guy, a hurricane, turtles, and a bit of bittersweet.

Rainbow or Rain, as she has demanded to be called, is the daughter of hippies. As the years have bounced along, her parents outlandishly eccentric ways have pushed her to become a pranking troublemaker in a desperate bid to pull the attention away from them. After a particular prank lands her being expelled from school, it coincides with her mother receiving an inheritance - money and a house in Florida.

Arriving in their new home, Rain immediately finds herself in a wrong place, wrong time kind of situation that lands her with a massive amount of community service hours and being stuck with a guy who has a completely wrong impression of her.

From there on, it gets all kinds of sweet. As Rain, a very likable girl, finds herself with a new friend, a new boy and a new life. As she bounces along through the story she finds that maybe having weirdly eccentric parents may not be the worst thing after all. And that the guy she thought was a jerk may just be the guy for her.

I loved Rain and ultimately after getting over the initial meeting of Josh with his slightly judgmental and grouchiness towards Rain, I began to love him as well. Together Rain and Josh have a wonderfully sweet chemistry. There is one scene especially that had me grinning like a fan-girl.

But, I think the characters that stole the show for me though were Rain's parents, Butch and Buttercup. Absolute best parents in a book - ever. They are the bees knees of awesome. It was really great to read a YA novel with two steady, present parents.

Overall, this was an easy read, with a sweet and wonderful story all wrapped up in cuteness. With great characters, awesome writing, and a beautiful setting, I couldn't have liked it more. If you're in the mood for a sweet and wonderful YA read, then definitely give Turtle Bay a chance.

Klise memang. Tapi masih sangat efektif dan menghibur.

Tiffany King is one of my go-to authors. Meaning when she releases a book, I immediately go-to it, and she definitely did not let me down with Turtle Bay. Everything about this book, from the cover to the characters, to the story is amazing. I absolutely loved Rain. I felt her struggle to come to terms with her not-exactly-conventional parents and learn to accept and love them just as they are, while at the same time learning to accept herself and bloom into the person she has truly always been. And Josh. Oh my...Josh. He swept into my heart and just made me smile. Their story, as they get to know one another and overcome their first impressions of each other is just...sweet. I honestly can't think of another word for it. Don't get me wrong, there's some drama, just enough to keep the story from being "corny," and keep me glued to the pages. This is just the kind of read I wanted, and truly would be the perfect beach read.

I love Tiffany King! I have read every book from her and I have loved every book from her. She is able to write captivating stories about characters that seem so real. The reader is able to relate with the love as well as the pain that these characters face. This is no different for Turtle Bay.

Rain and her family move down to Turtle Bay Florida in search for a new beginning. Back home Rain caused a lot of trouble, due to her family situation. Rain feels that Turtle Bay could lead to a fresh start. That soon changes when Rain gets invited to a beach party that lands her in community service. And cue Josh. Josh lives in Turtle Bay and is tired of people on vacation trashing the beach. What starts as a feud quickly changes to a Tiffany King romance. The perfect book to lay around with, or read at the beach. Great job Tiffany, it is amazing!

Looking for a fun, yet surprisingly deep beach themed book for summer? Look no further. Turtle Bay was filled with various issues to get philosophical over, characters to cheer on as they developed
and an enjoyable plot to sink into. A fast read, yet had substance, this is one book you should take to the pool/beach. Enjoy!

I loved this book! Tiffany King did a fantastic job writing this YA novel.
Rain is a comical teen girl with a quirky set of parents, I mean, they did name her Rainbow! I was immediately drawn into her life.
As I was reading I would laugh out loud or cringe right along with Rain. The storyline was one I could see an actual teenager go through.

I felt disconnected from the characters and the action. Several of the scenes and piece of dialogue were just cheesy. I did like that the big problem or climax at the end wasn't about the characters' relationship but about those around them and the storm.
