Guy Delisle

Drawing from his experience at animation studios in China and North Korea, Delisle's graphic novels Shenzen and Pyongyang depict these two countries from a Westerner's perspective. A third graphic novel, Chroniques Birmanes, recounts his time spent in Myanmar with his wife, a Médecins Sans Frontières administrator.

The Owner’s Manual to Terrible Parenting is the third book in Guy Delisle’s series of humorous sketches as a “bad” parent after A User’s Guide to Neglectful Parenting and Even More Bad Parenting Advice - and unfortunately the schtick is starting to get old. It’s still enjoyable, it just feels a little played out at this point.
Like when he throws his butane lighter onto some hot coals to make it explode and stress out his son, or when he teaches his daughter to say “son of a bitch”, or when he eats three teaspoons of mustard to impress his son, etc. - it all seems contrived, like he’s doing it to get a story for his next Bad Parent book because he’s run out of his funniest material.
In one comic hs son even calls his dad on it: when Delisle’s teasing his son about the moon crashing into the Earth one day, his son says he should write this scene down quickly so he can include it in his next book - which he does!
The Owner’s Manual… is definitely not a bad comic, it’s still got some cute and enjoyable moments and Delisle’s skill as a cartoonist means he can tell a perfectly good story with seemingly minimal effort - not drawing or writing too much in each frame to create some elegant strips. But it also feels like he’s scraping the bottom of the barrel for this kind of book and I hope he tries something different, like maybe a long form fiction, instead of continually churning these out every other year.

This has a similar title to what I think is DeLisle's somewhat more successful A User's Guide to Neglectful Parenting. DeLisle does books that explore different cultures--China, Korea, others, but I am guessing the first parenting book might have proved to be his most successful, building on his snarky sense of humor and a more popular topic than Korea. This is essentially UGNP volume two, and is more carefully developed, a series of strips, and maybe better artistically, more polished, whereas the first one seemed fresher, more spur of the moment, just more surprising, and funnier. But I am guessing if you are a parent, and maybe particularly a father, as I am, you will still like this stuff. I really do. He's funny and is clearly a great parent, in a hilariously "bad" way.

Tercera parte de las "guías" de Guy Delisle retratando anécdotas familiares con sus niños. Esta tercera, con mucha diferencia, es la mejor de las tres que llevo. Me ha hecho soltar alguna carcajada sincera y en general es mucho más divertida que las dos anteriores.
Los niños van creciendo y en alguna de las historias incluso mencionan que "esto es digno de salir en tus libro del mal padre", cerrando el círculo.
Muy divertida, muy entretenida, muy recomendable. Hay un cuarto volumen, por ahora, que tengo mediado y que también me está encantado.

I picked up this graphic novel thinking the simplistic comics might provide a few laughs for someone who works with kids all day. It started strong with a funny bit on teaching grammar in the middle of an exciting passage from Harry Potter, and quickly went downhill from there. I should have picked this up from the name but a lot of the comics actually ARE about terrible parenting, which is not a bit funny to me. Happily, the whole things only took about 30 minutes to read, and my partner, who was reading over my shoulder, was able to finish a whole book for the first time in a while. :)

If you like the wry, observational humor of the travelogues written by Guy Delisle, then you'll love this book. His subtle wit, when applied to travel destinations like North Korea, or Mainland China, is even better when it is used to highlight the ordinary, yet amusing, vignettes from everyday life with kids.
In "Terrible Parenting," I could 100% empathize with Delisle, when (as just one example) he attempts to help answer his young daughter's question: "Dad, what's a titch?" It turns out, after school, "Miranda's mom was angry and she kept saying, 'Sunova titch'." Dad, ever helpful, patiently sorts it all out and (inevitably) he successfully (?) explains that the phrase is "Son of a Bitch" and dad even teaches the child how to spell it properly, and to clearly pronounce it confidently.
A dad's work is never ending.

Guy has written several of these little short quick cartoons about his life as a stay at home father to his two children. His wife works for Doctors without Borders, which is why his other books are about his travels as the traveling spouse.
Like his two other books about parenting, this is cute and very true to life. In fact, I have felt the same way about plane travel as he does in one story where his son asks him if he is afraid of flying, and he said he was more afraid of something happening if he died alone, then if the whole family died together, and the son says "wait, you want us all to die", not getting it at all.
Cute, quick read. If you have read any of his travel stories from North Korea or Israel, I would highly recommend them, though these are a cute, quick read.

Publishers beware the books that have words like "terrible" in the title. It's just too easy. But really this was just okay. A couple of smiles from some material that looked like it came out of a sketchbook or something. Or maybe old restaurant menus? But it doesn't have the virtuosity of Crumb's similar stuff, so I ask "What's the point?"

Brevi bozzetti umoristici e si suppone autobiografici su un papà moderatamente diseducativo. Delisle è simpatico ma non sempre strappa la risata come vorrebbe. Personalmente trovo molto più gusto nel segno grafico di qualche espressione buffa dei bambini che non nelle battute.
Dividerlo in 3 volumi con una vignetta per pagina è chiaramente un espediente spremisoldi da disprezzare.

Oh, the humanity. Clever illustrations and clear, funny dialogue. I love the part where his son references the "bad dad" book.

Another great little book in this series. Showcasing the hypocritical (do as I say, not as I do), unintentionally scaring the bejebus out of kids with reality and cynicism, and just general goofiness of parenting. Very very quick read, minimal artwork. Good stuff.

This was a fun book to read, each comic is a few pages long and would be funny for both kids and parents. Each one was rather relatable, though it is geared around children who are school aged. It was entertaining to watch all the hard work of teaching kids lessons come back and bite the dad in the butt, so true of so many situations. It was all in all a quick and fun read that finds the comic relief in trivial daily life with kids.

Le guide du mauvais père 3 c'est du pareil au même, très similaire aux deux premiers volumes. Mais comme on en redemande toujours chaque nouveau volume est le bienvenue. Cette fois il s'agit de dix-neuf petites histoires d'une dizaine de pages (6 à 18 pages) où un père un peu égoïste et amoral abuse psychologiquement ses enfants de son humour tordu, parfois sans vraiment sans rendre compte.
Comme je l'ai déjà dit pour les deux premiers volumes, c'est un petit bijou fort amusant mais trop bref, car à deux illustrations par pages ça se lit très rapidement. C'est donc une BD légère qui offre une lecture agréable et amusante. Parfait pour l'autobus ou la salle d'attente.

Los padres no siempre acertamos. Está en nuestra naturaleza. Una lectura de las terroríficas y "casi al 100% reales" historias de Guy Delisle puede hacernos sentir un poquito mejor. Si eres padre y consigues terminarlo sin reírte, háztelo mirar.
Incomodamente real y diabólicamente divertido.
Mención para el dibujo, esquemático pero tremendamente expresivo.

Tout comme les deux premiers tomes, le livre est drôle (encore plus que les deux premiers je trouve) avec une lecture simple et rapide : un bon livre pour se changer les idées. Il y a peut-être une ou deux histoires qui sont moins amusantes que le reste de la BD.

For some reason this book Owner's Manual to Terrible Parenting (ISBN 9781770462144) is listed as a new edition of a User'd Guide to Neglectful Parenting (ISBN9781770461178). It is not. They are two completely separate books.

This is a super easy read that is relatable to kids and parents alike. It speaks a lot of truth to the unthought-through mistakes one can make as a parent and to the things kids remember after they are grown. Fun and fast, for sure.

Honestly, I was expecting something stupid and/or mean. I was pleasantly surprised that this book contained both intelligence and affection, and yes, it was still humorous. I can use more of this type of humor.
