This book was really unusual: a lot of it focuses on the heroine, who is following the drum - with her first husband, whom she genuinely cares for. As the book progresses, the number of obnoxious romance novel-isms gets rather high - the heroine is also a celebrated former actress; the heroine was - but the unusual beginning and the clear amount of research done into the role of women in wartime really sets this book apart.

Favorite excerpt:

“Would you carry me—if I was wounded?’ he asked suddenly, and immediately wished the words unsaid. It was a stupid, weak-minded question that made him sound like a sentimental fool.”

...

"Your legs are so long,’ she said at last. ‘I’d need a hatchet.’

‘To cut my legs off?’ He thought she had to be joking, but she looked so serious.

‘No, to make a pallet,’ she responded seriously. ‘What do they call it? A travois. To drag you. I don’t think I could carry you, Cole,’ she said earnestly. ‘Patrick was shorter than me, and you’re so much taller—and heavier. But I’m sure I could drag you. Horses can pull much heavier weights than they can carry. I’d have to rig up some sort of harness to go around my chest, only…I haven’t got a hatchet.’

Her hazel eyes were wide with anxiety that bordered on panic.”
