"You can grow fresh vegetables for your table year round. even if you live in the coldest parts of the United States....very low initial cost...no fuel costs...year round food production...how to build it...how to operate it..."
Helen Knothe Nearing was an American author and advocate of simple living. She and Scott Nearing started a relationship in 1928 and married nearly 20 years later, on December 12, 1947.[3][3] The couple lived in rural Vermont where they grew much of their food and erected nine stone buildings over the course of two decades. They earned money by producing maple syrup and sugar from the trees on their land and from Scott Nearing's occasional paid lectures. (from Wikipedia)
For someone building a sun-heated greenhouse, it would be an informative book. I had hoped that the plans would have been a bit easier and more appropriate for our farm.
Self-sufficient gardening with a lot of planning & help as the author/teachers aged & their physical abilities diminished. Pre-dates & complements Pollan & his "local omnivore" advice with a great deal to offer anyone wishing to reduce the real cost of obtaining food & wanting the benefits of fresh, home-grown food, year-round.
I read a book by the Nearings while a student in the New England Literature Program. It was almost tedious in its informative nature, which I wasn't so much looking for at the time, but I can't wait to read this one. Maybe I can have freshly-picked cherry tomatoes next winter!
