In the port city of a neighbouring kingdom, an assassin moves through the streets, killing people of importance. He is said to wear a red cloak and fight with skills only ever seen in the Southern Isles. But unbeknownst to the whispers in the alleys, he is a she, and she is on a path headed for home. She used to dream of freedom. She used to dream of a simple life. Now all she dreams about is the blood trail she has carved, leading back to her burnt out castle. Revenge is the business of hate, and where it is taking Amillia Morgentstein is a dark place where even love can't save her. Because love is a thing of the past for her and vengeance is all she can see. How far would you let yourself go to save everyone but yourself?

"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."
1,2, She's Coming For You... 3,4, Better Lock Your Door...
"I was the monster they had made, and I was going to burn their entire world down until each person bended their knee to my brother."
This series must be read in order. The first book is "Vengeance". This is the second book. I can't wait to read "Valiant"!
Millia does not want to rule. Not can she forgive either of the men she loves. Vengeance is what she loves for. Finding out her mother had plans for her since she was born was a shock... And not a welcome one. Finding out Elves and Faeries are real was less of a shock than finding herself betrothed to King Oren of the Elves. Sure he could give her the army to take back all the kingdoms but then she would be stuck with him... And that is not something she will allow. How will she get OUT of her betrothal? Why does Oren rub her the wrong way? How will she find the army she needs without marrying? Is it even possible? Can she fight this war on her own? Or will she need more help than she can gather in her own? What was her mother thinking? Would her father have approved?
Learning your family have either been killed or are in prison except for 1 brother who is hard filled and wants to rule by killing, terror and mayhem will turn even Princesses into fighters and plus she has a dragon to help her get the revenge that she and others want. And also to rescue what is left of her family and right the wrongs that have been done.
I am so consumed with this story! I love the confusing twists and turns. I hate that I have to wait for book 3! I am hoping Amillia finds some semblance of peace at the end of it all. A great book by an extraordinary mind. Can’t wait for Valiant.
About 38% of the beginning is from book 1 which had me totally confused. The rest of the story was very short and semi-interesting. Hopefully the next book will make up for it.
-A man once told me that there are infinite places love will take you, but revenge is the business of hate, and there is only one place hate will take you—the end. The end of you and the end of everything you once stood for. But I welcomed my end.
-“I don't need to do that.” I shook my head. “I know in my head what the right path is. I won't let my people down. My father never ruled with his head, always his heart. It never got him anywhere. Well, beyond betrayed. I want people to fear me. I want them to know who their ruler is.”
-"You kill without remorse, you love without reason, you change your mind like the wind changes course, and you are always struggling to find peace. This is that magic inside of you creating confusion and disorder. You are the bringer of chaos and discord. You are going to be the death of everything you love."
Wow! Just Wow! I loved this book! And I started my review with some of my fav quotes, because this is what its all about in Vanquished. Amillia is set on her path of Vengeance and will stop at nothing to get her kingdom united, they way it should be and nothing will get in her way.
Being the skilled assassin that she is, she leaves so much in her wake as she continues to claim Vengeance on all those who partook in the betrayal of her family. (Saving the best for last, of course).
This book will grip you until the end, with more pieces to the puzzle being filled in, we get a little bit more info on who played what part in the destruction of her kingdom and betrayal of her family. Amillia is finding out who is friend and who is foe, but even then, who can she fully trust? She has been told so many lies, and she acts accordingly. She acts with her feelings which tends to get her into trouble at times.
She is prophesized to be the only one who can heal her lands and bring back order. But all magic comes with a price and now she must pay that price. And she will soon find out what price that is.
-“Seven deaths for seven kingdoms and each must cost you a piece of your heart. Your dragon’s heart.”
She is left wondering who she will have to loose. What seven loves will she have to sacrifice in order to restore her kingdom? I am hoping none! What will be left at the end of her blood trail? I can't wait for the next book to find out! I want it, like yesterday! haha!
I'm in awe of Tara Brown I really am! Her stories are so deep and moving you desire to be the characters to live the stories. I believe her writing is made of holy writing, she amazing me at every turn. You get sucked in turning this way and that and you once your off the boat you still feel the swim of amazement in your head! Even with the character build and history facts throughout the book your so engaged you want to know more, you need to learn more to make it a part of you so you are the story and not just reading it as a mundane. This story of leadership and knowing what you do effects the people you love, isn't for the weak of hearts. It's dark like most of what Tara write to why she one of my favorite, favorite authors! I feel pieces of myself in these stories which is maybe why I'm so drawn to her style. Well done Tara, you did it again! Another amazing story following the first one! Can't wait to read book 3!!!
OK, now I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. You see I read the first book of this series Vengeance a few years ago, but that copy is no longer being sold and parts of it was tweaked and rewritten, so when i began to read Vanquished I was so annoyed! I had waited so long for this book to come out and it seems to begin halfway through the old copy of Vanquished that I loved. I don't know if it was my disappointment, but now that Tara Brown changed some of the writing it just seemed a bit forced and stiff. And I do think I get why she had to change the plot a bit, and some of the added explanations did make the story better, but the whole time I was like UGH!! Why!!!
I have quite a biased view as I thought the original book was better so especially after waiting so long for this book to come out it was defiantly a huge anticlimax.
The second installment was great. I had a rough time with keeping all the information straight. There was a lot of background and history in this book and it's necessary to pay close attention to the details in order to keep who from who and what from what.
I loved the first book and the love triangle that had formed had me a bit in twists. I flipped sides as often as she did, LOL. So when we get to Vanquished and the blurry lines of these relationships start to become clear I was excited...but incredibly sad.
I found myself cheering when she finally got to strike down those who would dare stand against her. She is loyal, fierce and a tad bit cray cray but she is all of the badassery you'd want in a heroin.
My favorite part of this series is Artan. I adore that dragon hardcore and love every scene he is in. I can't wait for book 3!
Fans of Lord of the Rings & Game of Thrones will LOVE this series! What a fantastic fast paced tale. Tara Brown has weaved such a wonderful and beautiful world of magic & mystery. I read both versions of Vengeance, book 1 in this series, and I can really see the growth in the writing and storytelling since the first book was originally written. So much more depth to the story and the writing and the story itself is deeper and better explained, easier to follow and understand if you will. In this book we get to see a bigger picture of the world of Enderos and all the magic and wonder that makes up this fantasy of dragon riders and princess assassins. A perfect continuation of a tragic story that you can't help but love and become slightly obsessed with!
Vanquished continued the story of Amillia, the princess who turned into a red-cloaked assassin in the first book of the appropriately named Blood Trail Chronicles. There is a lot of sword-slinging, brutal action in this book and the love triangle is one that is equally nail-biting. Every time I think I've joined either "team Grayse" or "team Maddox", I fall back in love with the other one. I love them both and it's pretty clear who Amillia will likely end up with, but I will forever root for the underdog--it's just my nature! Anyway, I thought this book was 100% entertaining and so much fun to read! I can't wait for the third installment!
Millia is on the road to get her revenge. But, she is finding out more of who seem to want to help are the ones she needs to watch. Motives are revealed, loved ones lost and found, but she must push on. Will she ever be able to be herself or has she become the biggest monster of all?
Definitely recommend reading the re-released version of Vengeance. There's enough of a difference between the original and revised versions to make a difference in following the story in Vanquished.
I found this book slightly easier to get into than the book before :) I loved it, loved the story, the slightly twisting plot lines, everything about it was good and enjoyable :)
Now I just have to wait for the 3rd and final installment of this series!!!! Still rooting for Grayse :)

Still really good! Couldn't put it done (just like the first). Can't wait for the third book[tara brown said hopefully around 26th December] keeping my finger crossed. Only down side was the book didn't really flow, I mean like it jumped to far ahead from vanquished but I still loved the book!!
There is a LOT of backstory in this one. Lots of detail to the other kingdoms that doesn't seem all that necessary to the story. Confusing more than anything. The story is good though
This book has everything you would want in a sci-fi fantasy book. The creatures are great and the characters so full of depth. I can't wait to see how it ends!
