Hell Is Here

Rate this book
When Leia Swanson sold her soul, she knew it would only be a matter of time before the demon she sold it to came to collect.

Six months down the line, the demon who owns her soul has come calling. Not only does the demon want to drag Leia to Hell, it wants her to undertake a dangerous and impossible mission while she is down there in exchange for getting her soul back.

With no choice but to take on the mission, Leia finds herself thrust into the terrifyingly insane world of Hell where it will take every ounce of her strength and guile to survive the unspeakable horrors she must go up against there. And as if that wasn’t enough, she must also try to locate her mother, who is still trapped there in a world of damned souls, eternal punishment, crazy Hellion’s and dangerous demon politics.

Leia must play the damnation game to win, the only people helping her a little girl born in the fiery pits of Hell itself and a stranger she meets along the way.

I’m N.P. Martin and I’m a lover of dark fantasy and horror. Writing stories about magick, the occult, monsters and kickass characters has always been my idea of a dream job, and these days, I get to live that dream. I have tried many things in my life (professional martial arts instructor, bouncer, plasterer, salesman…to name a few), but only the writing hat seems to fit. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my wife and daughters at our home in Northern Ireland.

Good but gruesome!

He'll is Here by NP Martin is book two in the series. In the last book, our gal made a deal with a demon for a favor for any time, well he came to collect. He wants her to go to Hell and accomplish a feat that is impossible! Most of this book revolves around being in hell and it gets gruesome. I think it went overboard in some spots. For that reason and because it is a cliffhanger, I didn't give it a full five stars but four. Still an exciting book just know ahead of time it is a bit graphic.

The second book in N.P. Martin's Watcher's series was a highly anticipated read for me, and holy demon babies, it did not disappoint!

4.5 stars

The story picks up about six months after the end of Hell Is Coming, with Leia living her life as a Watcher and waiting for the crossroads demon to show up and take her to Hell. Her and Josh are not as close since everything they went through. Josh seems to be really distant and wants to deal with his past trauma solo. Leia still lives with Frank at his cabin with Eva and a new dog, Fang.

After the crossroads demon comes to collect Leia's debt, she says her goodbyes to Josh, Frank, and Eva before meeting him for her trip to Hell. The demon makes Leia an offer: to return her soul, if she kills the king of Hell. They come up with a pretty shaky plan on how she will get to the King and kill him. Having no other choice, Leia makes the deal and enters Hell.

I absolutely loved N.P Martin's vision of Hell. The Demons were nasty and the descriptions were cringe-worthy. There's a couple of scenes in this book that made me almost lose my lunch. Leia is in Demon form and has no idea how she's going to make it to the city and to the King. She quickly finds some help in the form of a little girl that Leia names Alice, who was born in the pits of Hell. Alice becomes her guide and Leia learns that she has endured the unimaginable. I was so captivated during Leia's journey, and I just adored Alice for the quality's she possessed after being born into an eternity of suffering. N.P. Martin writes such strong, admirable characters, even if they aren't supposed to be 'good'.

The hardest scene for me to read in this one was when Leia got captured and was subjected to non-stop torture. I was literally curling my fingers and toes the whole time I was reading it. It was hard-core!

I think that's about all the details I should give...the story gets exciting and frustrating near the end. Leia learns some SHOCKING information right before a torturous ending that made me want to pull my hair out! But I sure as hell can't wait for the next book!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hell Is Here is the second book in the Watchers series, and it’s all about Leia going to Hell (because she sold her soul), and having to complete a seemingly impossible mission for a chance to get her soul back. Or, well it actually starts with her waiting around for the Crossroads Demon to collect her, and so she spends her time hunting demons and getting into old habits. She also visits Josh, however they aren’t nearly as close as they used to be and Josh is obviously the darker twin, which leaves her worried, even while Leia tries her best to survive in Hell. When the demon finally comes to collect her soul, though, he offers her a choice, a chance to get her soul back if she does something for him, or stay in Hell for all eternity. Naturally she agreed to the chance of getting her soul back, and so they come up with a shaky plan and then she’s in Hell, trying to make that plan a reality.

Leia is overwhelmed and unsure of how to get where she needs to be, and being in Demon form, she also has to worry about not giving in and losing control. She meets a little girl who she finds out was born in one of the deeper, darker parts of Hell that she names Alice though, and suddenly she has a guide. A friend. And Alice, although having never known kindness or love before, is a kind soul who can only give. She can do wrong, she was born in Hell after all, but she only helps Leia and the two form a bond. I came to admire Alice for her strength, for her bravery and for her loyalty. She’s an admirable character. She sticks by Leia, convinces Leia to leave her when she has to, and still stays standing after all the horrors she’s been through in Hell.

Hell is brutal. That’s probably not even that great of a word to describe it. It’s a red hued world filled with nasty, horrible demons of all sorts, types, colours, shapes, and sizes. There’s so many different demons, and yet each were horrifying and most probably made of what nightmares originate from. The descriptions were cringe worthy, so were the demons and their actions. It was brutal to see the way Leia was treated, how the others were treated and how they acted. It’s a ‘dog eat dog world’ as Edward would say, where demons steal, eat each other, rape their meals, and have the unfortunate curse of never being able to die. They always regenerate. I have to say though, that I really love the world. It was raw, brutal, horrifying, and most definitely brilliantly written. As harsh as Hell is, I loved the author’s vision and the way he wrote Hell.

The torture scenes were horrific, and hard to read, yet not hard at all. They flowed so well that you just got sucked in, and while you hated and was disgusted by the torture, you couldn’t help but keep reading. Like I said, it’s a brutal world. It just made me reevaluate Leia’s strength though, as she kept moving. She didn’t stop and cry, or curl up in a ball only to be miserable and get tossed in depression. No. She got back up after healing (she had help) and kept on with her mission.

Overall, I loved reading Hell Is Here and I’m definitely excited for the next installment. The ending shot a twist our way and then Leia was back to being tortured and wow! I just can’t wait to see where the author brings us next.

I purchased the book Hell is Here by N.P. Martin through Amazon.com.

I finished this book this past Friday night and it left me feeling very weird, unhappy and even a bit angry.

I was feeling weird because upon finishing the book I was popped back into reality and I didn’t like that at all. Neal has a way of reaching out with his stories and grabbing you right into story, so deep that you never want to leave.

I was unhappy because I didn’t want it to end and especially the way it ended. I need the third book, but I don’t think it is written yet. I can’t tell you why because I don’t want to ruin it for you, but trust me…WE NEED BOOK 3 NEAL!

I was angry because the book is so damn intense that you start to feel emotional and after the journey it took me on, I was NOT READY TO BE DONE.

This book is NOT a stand alone, you can get away with that with book 1, but if you have come this far, you are committed. You need to be committed to get through this though because this one is pretty graphic. Book 1 was mild compared to book 2. Book 2, Hell is Here …well it really is. Blood, gore, explicit disgusting mayhem and a little (which is more than enough) sex. But if you are reading this book it is because you are on Team Leia and you can’t put it down. It’s okay, it’s not your fault, this stuff is dangerously addictive. I was at the point that I was having to put the book down to digest what this poor girl was going through, but then it called to me and I had to get back to her and find out what was coming.

Now I sit, and wait…impatiently…Neal can I do anything to speed this up? I’ll clean the house, babysit, walk the dog, whatever it takes to make sure you are undisturbed until you get me back to Leia. Don’t leave me hanging…..

For those of you that have not yet embarked on this journey, I strongly recommend reading the Hell is Coming first. For those of you that read Hell is coming….what are you waiting for?

I give this book 10 stars!

Another hit in a new but equally fulfilling environment, the second book in The Watchers continues the plight of our beloved Leia, whilst the equally intriguing character of Frank takes a bit of a backseat. The depth of character and the seamless introduction of new characters, without needless pages of development, bring forth another equally enjoyable chapter in the series, with the added bonus of taking your imagination into the rarely visuaged Hell landscape; an environment often intonated throughout like genres but one that's rarely tackled. In this installment we see situations and outcomes which further make our heroine Leia appear more human and less fantastical, an accomplishment not always achieved in genres which allow the laws of nature to be so easily broken. Another 5 star read, one you'll surely revisit again. I highly recommend you keep reading and perhaps even consider adding Mr. Martin to your followed author list, as its surely being revealed that his novels are those you have to read if urban fantasy is your thing.

Second in The Watchers Series, and one Hell of a book (yes pun inteneded) a vivid and richly descriptive depiction of that place below and after death? Well written and another of N.P. Martin's books that I have enjoyed. Also check out The Crimson Crow, and Hell is Here for more weird and fantantical tales of Hell and the bizarre activities that includes.
