The story itself was good and I would give it a higher rating with some good editing and restructuring. It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to share such deeply personal accounts of childhood trauma. I appreciate this and the hope Kaylin instills in those who have had similar experiences.

Powerful story
“Into the Ocean” is an absolutely heart-wrenching memoir that is difficult to read because of the sheer weight of what the author has endured. It’s almost unimaginable that one person could survive so many layers of trauma, abandonment, and emotional devastation and still find the strength to keep moving forward. The way Kaylin Wingfield shares her story feels deeply personal — raw, unfiltered, and painfully honest — which allows the reader to feel her experience rather than simply observe it.
This book has the potential to be a powerful healing tool, especially for those who have lived through abuse, neglect, or cycles of emotional suffering. The courage it takes not only to survive such experiences, but to speak them into words and give them form, is genuinely admirable. I had the privilege of reading this book prior to publication. At the time there were some formatting details yet to be corrected so I will disregard those small issues.
This story is told like you are sitting together with an old friend or sibling and reminiscing about life. Memories crop up at unlikely times, as they do in real life, and sometimes the happiest moment can trigger a flashback of one of the worst moments in life. It was definitely relatable in how she weaves her memories and trauma into her life story because those scars don’t always heal let alone fade. I really appreciated that she acknowledged her parents also knew trauma as children, and were not born cruel but grew that way in life. Kaylin chose to work to break the cycle.
You will feel so sad for little Kaylin. You will be outraged on her behalf. How could nobody see and intervene? But you will also feel hopeful that if she can begin healing maybe anyone can.

Heartbreaking and raw
Such a heartbreaking memoir, I don't know how our dear author held it together to tell her story. At times hard to read because of the abuse she suffered but these stories are important to tell. You can feel the emotions leaping off the page, and for that alone, it gets 5 stars from me.

Ocean
A beautiful haunting read of a woman who did not let her childhood change who she was. In this book, the author takes you through her childhood, which was full of pain to adulthood and finding the person she was supposed to be. Full of hope, her determination to be a better person and love for her son. Heart touching.

Apologies in advance, I am not the best at writing reviews..always afraid to give too much away.
Raw, honest, brutal, unbelievable. Kaylin’s life story is all of these things and more. This is definitely a book that will stick with you long after you finish that final chapter. I thought it was well written, it sort of gave me the feel of a best friend writing you a letter, which I appreciated. Like she was telling her story to me and me alone. It’s not something I have gotten from many other books I’ve read.
The things that the author had to endure from such a young age, the many people that constantly let her down, being betrayed and abused by those who should have loved and protected her. It is something that no person should have to live through, but sadly too many do. My heart is broken for her, but also full of hope! Throughout the book, I was really wishing for Kaylin to realize her worth, her value, I could not wait to see how her life started to come together towards the end. Like the phrase sometimes overly used in so many books - I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding! Happened a few times!
There are a handful of things I can relate to in her story, and it had me feeling every emotion, from anger and sadness, disgust and disbelief, and finally some happiness! I can’t imagine the strength needed to have to relive so many of these awful memories to get them on paper, but I am glad she found it within herself to do so. If it can help even one person realize their worth, then it’s a success!

As an author and survivor, I approached this book with interest and apprehension. But I wasn’t disappointed at all… what Kaylin Wingfield has done here is craft a raw and unflinching testimony of what life is like growing up in an environment of violent abuse.
It won’t be for everyone, but for those who need to hear it, it’s vital reading.
It consists of a simple, direct narrative that lets the horror speak for itself. Not always spoken out loud, but you can feel it behind the words… the misogyny, the betrayal, the systems that let her down.
There are genuinely tender moments, and that makes the tougher parts hit harder. One minute you’re chuckling at a worm character she sneaks in with the text, and next minute she declares she literally wants to vomit, just from writing down what happened.
There are little relatable details that will make anyone feel seen (in my case, her need to learn to fix her own food at a young age, and the story of her pet dog ‘herding’ her… just like my own used to with me!)
It’s a quick read that flows well and grips you, and the only reason you’re likely to put it down is when the emotion is too heavy to hold. In particular the raw pain and self-blame that she writes about is only too familiar to survivors.
The book conveys the reality of broken boundaries and abandonment, but later turns to fierce defiance and cycle breaking (I was hoping it would… I was rooting for her so hard… ‘please turn this around… please…’)
Five stars for impact and honesty. I highly recommend this for survivors of a physically or emotionally violent childhood if they seek unvarnished validation of their experience, or for anyone seeking to understand those survivors.

This memoir was utterly heartbreaking it was a difficult read and tears were shed. Kaylin shares her experiences of the severe trauma and abuse she endured throughout her life. This book was a hard read and very emotional, it’s written very well and it feels raw and honest. I cannot believe the abuse trauma and neglect that Kaylin has been through in her life, it makes me sick to my stomach what she’s endured, especially the things I read about the animals I felt SICK! I can’t fathom how anyone could ever want to harm their beautiful fur babies.
This isn’t an easy book to read at all it can be very triggering for readers who have been through similar situations, after reading this book my heart feels heavy and broken. I want to give Kaylin the biggest hug! Into the ocean is a powerful read and I can only imagine the strength and courage it took for her to re live all of her trauma again by writing this memoir, I have so much respect for the author and I’m really glad she is here today to share her story with the world it’s very important story to tell I’m really glad I got to read it. Kaylin’s story will stay with me for life, thank you to Kaylin for the opportunity to read this book I am very grateful.

Into the Ocean, is a memoir of Kaylin’s life from when she was growing up until the present day. It is a very emotional read which describes the struggles and fears she faced living in a very violent home. It tells, in much detail, the things she suffered and endured while growing up. Things she should never had witnessed or been involved in. Many people had let her down. It made me sad to think Kaylin didn’t get the love she deserved from those around her.
I’m sorry you couldn’t be, “that little girl who sparkled and played”. You are a strong person to have gone through all that you did while growing up and you survived it. I hope you can find love now and live a happy fulfilling life.

Rating a memoir feels different from rating a novel because it’s someone’s lived experience. This was a raw, emotional, and heartbreaking account of the author’s childhood marked by abuse and neglect. While the writing could have benefited from additional editing, which would have given it a higher rating, the story itself is told with remarkable honesty and vulnerability. I hope that sharing her experiences has been part of the author’s healing journey, and that her story offers hope and comfort to others who have endured similar trauma.

Into the Ocean is such a raw and haunting memoir that the author wrote about her devastatingly terrible upbringing. That Kaylin lived this kind of life and is still here to tell her story shows how much of a survivor she is and how strong she is. It just proves that you never know what’s happening behind someone else’s closed doors.

This story broke my heart. I don’t know how this author got through all the memories or trauma and pain through this memoir. I was tearing up in places and was very hard to read emotionally. Thank you to the author for letting me read her story.

This book was full of raw emotion and honesty. I cannot believe the abuse and neglect that was endured throughout this book. If you are looking a book that will pull you in and make you truly feel then this is the book for you.

This isn’t a book book, this is a life story, it’s not perfectly written, it’s told, how when you are talking with someone and you remember another story,
I am moved by this story and the message it gives to people in hard situations!
