Colonel Steve Austin is working at NASA, training Major Kelly Woods who is to be America’s first female astronaut piloting Athena One on a mission to discover new sources of energy. At the same time, he witnesses a UFO at Kennedy Space Centre and, after having his claims dismissed, pursues his own investigation. Then there is an accident on Athena One. Novelised from two different episodes written by D C Fontana - “The Rescue Of Athena One” (series one) and “Straight On Til Morning” (series two) - Jahn does a good job tying them both together but he’s hamstrung by the huge amount of exposition he has to work through. As Minonee, the lead alien, explains everything, the chapters get bogged down and the one piece of major action, the rescue in space (Woods was played by Farrah Fawcett-Majors in the episode) is almost over before it starts. Nicely written but a bit too full of plot that’s more complicated than it needs to be, this isn’t on a par with “Wine, Women & War” unfortunately.
