Amanda Stevens is the award-winning author of over fifty novels, including the modern gothic series, The Graveyard Queen. Her books have been described as eerie and atmospheric, “a new take on the classic ghost story.” Born and raised in the rural south, she now resides in Houston, Texas, where she enjoys binge-watching, bike riding and the occasional Horror Night with friends.
The book is 25 years old but it's not dated.Amanda Stevens old books are as good as her later ones. This was a great romantic suspense and mystery that had me guessing the whole time.
Sorry, I just could not do it. This is one of the few DNF books that I have read/not read recently. The plot is just so far outside of my lived experience, or what I would recommend to other women as a path to follow. A woman, who's sister has died less than 24 hours ago, makes contact with the man who was present at the time of her sisters death, he tries to strangle her (who knows why he does this) and then she takes him to her house. I do not care enough about what caused this woman to be killed, and this man to have amnesia, to finish reading what has been offensive to me in the first 25 pages that I ended it all.
Amanda Stevens delivers another true page-turner with, "Lover, Stranger," a book that quickly manages to overcome its hideous title with strong writing, sympathetic characters, and Stevens' usual break-neck pace. It begins as Dr. Ethan Hunter awakens in a hospital--badly beaten and with no memory. It appears he was attacked in his office, by an assailant who also killed his assistant. Afraid of what he doesn't know, Ethan tries to leave the hospital--and is confronted by a mystery woman named Grace Donovan. She says that his assistant was her sister, and she now wants him to help her find the killer. Ethan feels an immediate connection to her, but is Grace friend...or foe?
Stevens inverts the situation from her earlier book, "The Second Mrs. Malone," (where a woman woke up with amnesia...covered in blood), and tells a story that's just as strong. Grace and Ethan are both a lot more than they seem at first, complex and involving, and Stevens keeps us guessing all the way to the end. The plot thickens expertly, and even the twists that should have been hard to swallow came across believably. There are a lot of reasons the book shouldn't have worked, like the way one plot element bore a suspicious resemblance to one from another Intrigue from just a few months ago. The fact that it came across as a fresh, compelling tale should give Stevens a reason to pat herself on the back. Deeply romantic and packed with action, "Lover, Stranger" (still hate that title!!!) will please the most demanding reader of romantic suspense.
A good story, although dated, it still wears well today. Grace Donovan shows to be a strong, yet believable character and although the sometimes overused "amnesia" was used as a vehicle in this story, it still reads well. I liked the fact that Ethan was smart enough to figure the adversary's intentions; I know readers do not like the lead female being "too stupid"; the male lead playing "too stupid" is not acceptable either. Amanda Stevens shows an even balance in her writing and I'll be looking for her other earlier works as well.
the twist and plot was well written. although there were some parts of the story that was a little predictable, and it almost got me to that feeling that you knew it was going to happen. loved how this situation made ethan and grace found love.
