Bittersweet is the sequel to Fire and Ice, the Faerie Song Trilogy by the amazing author, Michele Barrow-Belisle. This story starts right after the end of the first book. Lorelei has returned to the human realm to try and continue to have an ordinary life. She discovers that her magic has more to it than what she originally though and now has to fight for what her heart desires - which happens to be a super sexy elf prince named Adrius from the supernatural world of Mythlandria, who is bound Venus, to the daughter of the evil witch she killed. Lorelei now has to uncover answers that are not easily accessible and make difficult choices between love and power, dark or light side since no one can have both.
My Review: Honestly, this book blew my mind! Michele Barrow-Belisle, you did it again *claps*. This book surpassed my expectations and made sure I couldn't put down my book for a second - which was a bad thing considering that I have many projects and exams to prepare for. But really, this book was awesome!
I love how we got to see more of Lorelei's school friends and understand more about her life in the Human world. It was a nice change of scenery from the mythical world of Mythlandria (a VERY original name if you ask me….)
This book had a slow start. I liked how we got to see more of the human world but the plot kind of dragged on. I believe too little happened in a lengthy part of the book.
Ok. Complete change of topic. Let me just say I’m not a very big fan of Adrius and Lorelei together. Its frustrating when he tells her she can do whatever she wants but when she decides to do something, he won’t let her do it. Like seriously! Ugh.
Also, IT IS SO IRRITATING THAT LORELEI JUST KEEPS ON FORGIVING HIM. *slaps Lorelei’s face* LISTEN UP SUGAR BUN. He is not good enough for you!!!!! Don’t fall in love with someone based on looks (yeah sure he is a good guy but so is the guy who serves chips and McDonalds :)). If I had any say in which direction this series lead to, I would make Zanthiel end up with Lorelei.
For those who haven’t read this series, Zanthiel is a sexy-hot, bad-ass dark faerie who is the son of Mab, the ruler of the Winter court. His relationship with Lorelei is more of a Love-hate but not hate- relationship. Zanthiel gave Lorelei her singing ability when she was young and kissed her to awaken her powers in the first book (which had me squealing for like, half an hour). Many times through this book (and the last), Zanthiel has been there for Lorelei, turning up when she most needed it and putting her first before anything (unlike Adrius who puts his life, his future kingdom and his father before anyone and has too many chances with Lorelei to count).
One more thing I just need to put out there. Venus. You need to get your shit together. Amen.
If you have read this far, I thank you for putting up with my crazy emotions. I give this book 4 Zanthiels out of 5.
Okay.....so... Here comes the rant. What the hell! Michele I can't believe this, for the first time ever I hate the love between the girl and the boy. I HATE ADRIUS. THERE. I SAID IT. THE LOVE BETWEEN THEM IS UNREAL. IN A BAD WAY! He always looks down at her He doesn't lets her be He's got another priorities AND YET SHE STILL CHOSES HIM! SOMEONE SMACK THIS GIRL ON THE HEAD! I couldn't be more blissful than when all those things with Zanthiel happened. That love is true! I don't see a connection between Adrius and Lorelei after that! Something broke there, beyond repair. Love is an exceptional feeling, not an excuse! She can't go around killing people saying its for his freedom, because she's always struggling with herself, ignoring her deepest wishes and feelings. There were parts where I swore she was turning evil, like truly. Nothing is falling into place. Can we at least be honest here?! You're the devil Michele! I ACTUALLY SAW HER ENDING AS THE MAYOR EVIL THERE! WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY HEAD?!? That love is toxic to her soul, and love is anything but that! You tell us it stirs all the darkness she's got inside and yet you force her into fight for it! This book is conflicting me beyond measure.
Ok Ok End of the rant. Michele. I freakin love your style. Seriously. People think in a book things should develop in a determined way just because of the genre, or the topic. But you've accomplished to drag me into a world, an immense world, full of magic and at fate's mercy. Somehow Lorelei's choices make her more human, and always come back to bite her ass. The fact that your world awakened such strong emotions in me (because let's be honest, you're messing with my deepest beliefs) is a proof that you've got talent beyond measure. For that it deserves five stars. But let's agree to disagree okay? I love the book in general because the world is simply amazing. As I always say: your world, your rules. And that applies for every author, and every person. Here you see it through Lorelei's eyes, and her head and feelings are a tempest, she's doomed I'm telling you. Seriously the girl has bad stars. Fate hates her. AND IM MAD BECAUSE I SHIP LORELEI AND ZANTHIEL AND I DONT GET WHY SHES STILL CHOOSING ADRIUS AFTER ALL THATS HAPPENED. >:( But your books are beautiful.
I can see this as a motion picture.
Ps. could you please at least tell us the prophecy clearly? Because I'm so so soooo confused. Also, there were parts where i felt like I read the same paragraphs twice. I hope that that was on purpose, I'm guessing it is because as I said you're evil and messing with my feelings :,(. I love/hate you This story is heading for epic. Third book better kick some ass.
I loved (adored) Fire & Ice, the first book in Michele Barrow-Belisle’s Faerie Song Saga (which I reviewed separately). So much so that I glommed onto the next book in the series, Bittersweet, only to find that it was so addictively good that I simply had to read the next one, Freeze, and then the one after that, Melt, as well. It’s now past 4am. My husband, Mr. I-don’t-snore, has been obliviously, umm, noisily breathing in the Chair next to my bed (I’m in the hospital right now) for hours. I’m going to totally regret the lost sleep tomorrow but I just don’t care. I’m not going to summarize these books as the publisher’s blurbs do a perfectly good job of it. Instead - and I’m going to be careful how I write this so as to not spoil anything - I will simply note that Lorelei and Venus’s stories have left me exhausted (emotionally, that is: we are not taking about being sleep deprived) yet totally fulfilled. These are powerful books. Beautifully written, with superbly crafted characters and with plots that were perfectly executed. I could go on and on with praises - rack of these books definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that it is supremely easy to highly recommend each of them.
She went back to save the man she loves to free him from the crazy princess who has him spelled and to see if he really is still him and if her love for him is still there but her dark demon is with her the only way to make this work is to tell every there getting married
I really enjoyed this book! There was a lot of challenges and adventures for the characters to overcome and watching their growth was really important. There are some interesting mysteries uncovered in Bittersweet and I am excited to see what Freeze has to offer next!
Recommendation: Yes! This book is a great addition to the series. Would recommend to fans of the first installment and anyone who enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Type:Series, this is the second of three books in the Faerie Song Trilogy.
*Length: 464 pages
Summary: Good continuation. + answered some of the questions left from the first book + increased tension between mains +/- Plot twists ( although they are slightly confusing) + characters further developed +more Zanthiel -slightly less BA heroine

Full Review:
Warning: If you have not read the first installment Fire & Ice, stop reading now. This will contain mild spoilers from the first novel.
Bittersweet, left me feeling well..bittersweet. ( So original right? I know, blame the lack of coffee.) This story picks up with Lorelei and Adruis, spending every waking second together that they can. Lorelei, forced to stay on earth because of all those who hunt her, spends her days waiting for Adruis to visit and the two of them bask in the glory of each others love. Yeah, yeah.. get to the good stuff right? Well, without giving too much away, Venus manages to cause a serious amount of drama and begins to threaten Lorelei and those around her. Forced with no other choice, she begins to search for a way to not only save her friends and herself but also to free Adruis for the icy chains that bind him.
Here is one thing I don’t get about this portion of the story, if the king was so dead set on keeping the two apart and killing Lorelei, how was Adruis even able to come see her? And for that matter, without revealing the good stuff, how is Venus able to cause so much trouble with two super bad princes pining after her? Despite that questions that this book opened up, the plot is entertaining and offers continuous action. It has a much quicker pace than the first and it keeps the reader engaged.
I really liked that in addition to the continuation of the original plot, there were a few twists and some of the more annoying questions left open with the first book are answered. There was more detail used to describe the setting and the chemistry between Lorelei and both Adruis and Zanthiel is deeper and more tangible. The author seems to be setting the stage for a certain someone to rally and come in with the woo-age and that really has me pumped. I wasn’t crazy about how everything was wrapped up with Venus. It didn’t make sense to me. The time line felt a bit skewed because when the fight between Adruis and Zanthiel over Venus in book one was described, it felt like it was way in the past. Maybe it wasn’t?
Either way, there are some pretty good twists and I am anxious to see what is planned for the conclusion. I enjoyed this book more than the first so, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to continue to trilogy.
Disclaimer: I obtained a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. Thank you so much Michele Barrow-Belisle.
Title: Bittersweet (Book II of The Faerie Song Trilogy)
Author: Michele Barrow-Belisle
Published by: Astraea Press 2013
Bittersweet is the sequel to Fire and Ice, Faerie Song Trilogy by Michele Barrow-Belisle. It tells about how Lorelei now discovers than she is more than what she think she is, but along that she now has to fight over what her heart truly desires- namely an Elf prince named Adrius who is bonded to Venus, the daughter of the witch Lorelei killed. Uncovering answers will not be easy for her, but now she has to choose between power and love, shadow or light, because no one can truly have both.
What HRH thinks:
Let me first start with the formal review before I lose it all in.
The plot took me away! Indeed, M. Barrow-Belisle exceeded my expectations! I yearned for the uncovering of her human life, and that is exactly what I got, bringing in the balance of the plot. It's important to keep tabs between fantasy and reality, and the author did just the right amount of that without losing the story. M. Barrow-Belisle's only competition is with herself, and the battle is neck-to-neck. The plot is carrying me away to things I would have never thought was possible, and the author weaves it in human life to somehow make the reader think if any of it is true. M. Barrow-Belisle is a weaver of fantasy.
The character development was mind blowing, a tornado so strong that I was blown away! I did not expect any of the characters to bloom in their ways, but M. Barrow-Belisle keeps surprising me! I love the fact that Lorelei's human friends were given spotlight, providing the connection between her old and new life. I got an extra piece of cake with her family background as well. I think it's essential for the readers to know what the main heroine is made of, and the author did it in a way that it'd be more than just a boring historical background. The main characters' development was what really kept me on toes in this novel. Adrius showed some weakness, which I found relieving. Not even an Elf prince can be perfect. Lorelei is making me crazy though, that girl has some issues but I think it's all part of the charm. It makes her real. It makes her the normal girl who suddenly discovers that she is more than just normal. The author portrays her so well.
Zanthiel, though, my dear Zanthiel. I am saving his development for last and I think that my reaction towards him deserves a part in this review because I cried for him literally after reading the book. M. Barrow-Belisle has officially broken my heart. I don't know what magic she poured into Zanthiel's character that made me love him as much as hate him. It's amazing for M. Barrow-Belisle to bring him to life that I almost wish I have a faerie who guides me throughout the night. Zanthiel's charisma beckons for the readers to feel for him, and I cannot wait for the third and final book to be released. I need justice, M. Barrow-Belisle.
This book is now one of my personal faves. Aside from my love of Zanthiel, it is overall a work of art. One can never get tired of fantasy, and I highly recommend this to all readers who are smitten by worlds beyond our own.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (It's way over five stars but it's the limit. Any book that will make me cry is a work of a genius)
5 Stars|Amazon|Goodreads Ahh!! I read the first book in this series off of a recommend from an author and I was hooked. After getting a message from Michele and a chance to read the ARC of this I was OVER the moon! Book One left you mouth agape and on your toes with anticipation for this novel and it did not disappoint.
Now, trying to find time to read this book was NOT an easy task. It is the type of book that you need to devote your complete attention to. Just like with book one, it plays out very much like movie as you are reading. Lots of fine details that may not seem important even though they are. It is the beauty of the writing. Like with real life, you never know what you need to know until the right time presents itself.
I felt like this novel was one big suspense filled romantic mystery that we had to piece together and help solve. One thing after another is thrown into the path of our hero and heroine leaving a very bleak looking future. Don't despair though, have faith that Michele will do us right.
We had a minor romantic tryst in book one, but things definitely get complicated in book two. I felt myself very torn between sides, and if I am going honest my heart didn't end up where I thought it would. I love when an author has that much power in their words. The power to make you question what you thought you wanted in your heart for the characters.
This book was filled with shock and chaos. From Venus to the prophecy things never had a down point. I loved the integration of the secondary characters in this novel as much as well got them. I felt like it really started to bring the story to gather and forced you to become even more invested in them.
With the writing I know you fell in love with and the story that left you breathless, this novel does NOT disappoint. Synopsis: To save the Faery world and her mother’s life, Lorelei sacrificed everything, and the dangerous bargain she made in Nevermore had lasting repercussions. Now safely back in her own world, Lorelei seems the same to her highschool friends and her supernatural boyfriend. Yet love across dimensions is complicated, especially when an invisible Veil between the two worlds—the only bridge that links the pair, is sealing, threatening to separate Lorelei and Adrius forever.Determined to find a solution, Lorelei resorts to using her new found powers. But when her friends succumb to the same mysterious illness that nearly took her mother’s life, Lorelei can’t help but wonder if her own dark magic is responsible. Still, the nightmares from Nevermore continue their icy hold. Someone from Adrius’s past arrives, determined to destroy Lorelei’s world starting with those closest to her, and Lorelei is forced to choose between her family and friends and a love that was ill-fated from the start.
We pick up where we left off with Lorelei in the human world. Her healing abilities aren’t working and I’m panicking! Adrius is in the human world with her, but so is Venus, who is as beautiful as I believe her to be crazy. It’s revealed that the veil between Lorelei’s human world and Adrius’ mythical world is slowly breaking.
While I thought the book started off a bit slow, it was interesting to see more of Lorelei’s world and her friends. I have to say, the plot blew me away. I don’t usually have high hopes for sequels, but this book exceeded my expectations by far! The character developments as well as the world building left me speechless. Ms. Barrow-Belisle has created characters that are easy to love and hate… sometimes at the same time! I shouldn’t love Zanthiel, but I do! It is hard at times to tell if he is the bad guy, but I can’t help but root for him. I adore Adrius, but there were moments where he seemed a bit too controlling for my taste. While I know he has Lorelei’s best interest at heart, I felt she should have been able to make her own decisions as he gave her guidance. I will say, while I like Lorelei as a character… she drives me crazy sometimes. At the same time, she is learning so much about herself and what she is capable of; which makes it easy to forgive some of the decisions she does make. (I’m secretly hoping for a romance between Lorelei and Zanthiel!)
This was well done and thought out! I can’t wait for book 3!
I am going to do a review on the Faerie Song Series vs each individual book. They are not stand-alones so I feel like you have to read them in order to understand the complex storyline. The first book has a slight cliffhanger and the second book starts right back into the story.
Lorelei isn’t your typical teen because she can heal with her touch but in everything else she is pretty typical in that she goes out with friends, has a part time job and has drama with the popular kids. One day, Adrius, a hot new guy, shows up and it all goes crazy from that point on. They have incredible chemistry but there are so many other things that have to be taken care of, their attraction almost takes a back seat.
I really liked this series but it was hard to read in some places along with a couple of inconsistencies that I noticed. It wasn’t anything glaring but I notice things like that. For this to be a YA book, it was surprisingly easy to read and I didn’t feel like I was reading an angsty teenager’s diary. I love all the additions of the creatures of Nevermore and all the mystery surrounding Lorelei’s family, her past and her future.
An Awesome Read! This book was a total adventure to read! From the moment I began, I was swallowed up into the story, held captive, turning page after page until I got to the very last word. I couldn't put it down. I read the first book in perpetration for reading this one and I loved it so much I didn't think it could get any better. I was wrong! This is so well written, the plot was thick and intense and full of twists and turns and surprises. The story is full of emotions, there's romance and drama, indecision, and doubt. The characters are so real, you feel for them and cheer them on even when you're not sure what side to root for. When I finished up, I was not prepared, I wasn't ready to let go. I need to know what happens next! I can't wait for the next installment. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book from Xpresso Reads in return for a fair and honest review.
Just like the first book, this one is incredibly fast paced and full of detail. The triangle that was hinted at in book 1 becomes stronger for a time before fading away to just two, but which two and will it last? This book is full of action and betrayal. It is hard to know who to trust and that is as a reader! I don't think I could cope with it for real.
One thing that I have to say is that it does become disjointed in places - and this is not me saying it due to being interrupted whilst reading, because I wasn't - but at times, I did have to go back a page or two, just to see if I had missed something out.
On the whole though, this is a very well-written, imaginative and descriptive piece of work. Having read books 1 and 2, I stand by my recommendation to all fans of YA Fantasy.
This one just took off from book 1 and never stopped. One thing I love about Lorelei is that she never felt like she was what everyone said she was. She knew she had incredible power but never was proud of it and that allowed her to fight the darkness and in the end do what is good. Sure she makes mistakes along the way, but everything she does is to save those she loves. There were moments my heart hurt to see how circumstances pulled Lorelei and Adruis apart but love can pull through things impossible. Zanthiel became so much more intriguing in this story. His devotion to Lorelei is unwaivering even though he knows her heart belongs to someone else but you can see there is true goodness in him. I am hoping we get more of why he is what he is in book 3. With some unexpected twists at the end, it has left me really anticipating book 3!
Bittersweet is absolutely enchanting! Whether you're on this side of the veil or in Mythlandia, there's never a dull moment. There is danger lurking in ever corner and Lorelei must find the courage in her self and decide who she can really trust if she's going to stay alive.
This book was so good, I didn't want to put it down. I find myself saying something that I didn't think I would, I love both Adrius and Zanthiel. They both love her and are her protectors. Which, will her heart choose?? Only time will tell. I am left patiently waiting for more to come in the series. It is so incredibly good, I highly recommend Faerie Song Trilogy to everyone!!
I feel like I just ran a marathon and now I need to catch my breath. I loved it and I hated it ... Weird. Well, okay I honestly didn't hate it, I was just mad that she didn't choose the right guy for her because she is so young and blinded by her first "love." I can totally relate, but I'm gonna save that thought for my official review! ... My ship totally didn't happen. At first I was conflicted, but then I was team Zathaniel all the way. I've got a thing for broken bad boys who are really just big softies... I mean, I married one.
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD AND AWESOME AND CRAZY BUT I AM FUMING AT THE ENDINGG #ZANLEI ALL THE WAYYYY!! BOOK 3 BETTER BE KICK ASS AND MORE AMAZING AND HOPEFULLY ENDS WITH HER AND ZANTHIEL IM SO EXCITED TO READ IT AHH !!!
Still enjoying this series. Pretty much decided I'm a "Z" fan but many of the characters are interesting. Some of the royalty need a good comeuppance. Adrius brother needs a good girlfriend. Good characters, really good world building.
