An absolutely banging 5-star sequel! Dystopian is well and truly back, baby, and this, my friends, is one you NEED to read!

Broken by the Rift doesn't miss a beat. After a handy recap of book one (thank you, Jen, for helping my goldfish brain!), we're thrown straight back into the action where Kissed left off. This time, our ragtag band of misfits finds themselves in a brand-new world, one ruled by an ancient god and filled with immoral Changelings, dangerous trials, a familiar face, and a whole lot of secrets.

Calnyra and Griff continue their agonising dance around their feelings, serving up top-tier yearning, seemingly endless cock-blockage, and enough heated moments to keep me thoroughly invested, and then when the slow burn ignites, it’s a glorious ‘FINALLY’ moment! But they're far from the only couple bringing the chemistry. I adored watching Selene and Sam's relationship blossom, and Harlow and Lioren are absolute fire (and I don't just mean Harl's hair!). The romance runs beautifully alongside the main plot, weaving itself naturally into the story without ever overshadowing it. Every relationship adds something meaningful, enhancing the narrative rather than distracting from it. It was perfectly done.

Though the burning romances were a highlight, another special mention would have to be the return of Pip, our adorable best little glowy girl Shellin! I feel that she’s going to have a bigger role to play in the finale.

Jen is a master storyteller, effortlessly weaving together shocks, spice, secrets, and a dangerous world filled with characters you'll grow deeply attached to and also loathe with your whole chest! -grumbles- Hagennnn... (I was in Jen’s DMs during the last 10%, AHH, sorry lady!) The pacing was spot on from beginning to end, with not a single dull moment in sight. There isn't a speck of second-book syndrome hiding within these pages. If anything, this sequel strengthened my love for the series and has firmly cemented it among my all-time favourite dystopian reads.

Broken by the Rift is a strong sequel to Kissed by the Rift that builds on everything I enjoyed in the first book. I had forgotten how much I'd missed Pip (and OMG, what's happening to her?!), and it was so good to be back with these characters. What stood out most to me was how naturally the story kept introducing new layers without feeling overwhelming. The characters remained the heart of the novel, and Jennifer Wichelo strikes a great balance between action, emotion and intrigue. Plus the steamy dream sequences really built the spicy tension.

The character development is one of the book's biggest strengths, giving readers a much deeper understanding of who everyone is at their core. Then, in the final third, the action ramps up and I absolutely flew through those chapters.

That ending!!! It was exactly the kind of finale that leaves you staring at the last page, wondering how you're supposed to wait for the next book. I have so many questions, and I am officially desperate to find out what happens next.

this book is just as addictive as the first one and the stakes feel so much higher.

I had no idea what to expect from this book and I'm not used to that as I'm usually someone that has a lot of theories, but even if I did have any I know they would've been wrong because I could never have dreamed where we ended up in the book!

the found family is soooo so satisfying and I love them all so much, each character brings their own special things to this book and I wouldn't have any of them any other way!

I cannot wait for book three after the insanity that was the epilogue of this book two and I know whatever Jennifer comes out with next will be epic!

Broken by the Rift picks up immediately after the events of Kissed by the Rift, and somehow the stakes are higher, the secrets are bigger, the emotional damage is significantly worse, and I was absolutely obsessed from start to finish. The moment I started reading, I was completely pulled back into this world and honestly didn't want to leave.

This time, Calnyra, Griff, and the rest of the Rift crew find themselves venturing into the Under Realm, a fascinating and dangerous new world filled with an ancient god, immortal Changelings, trials, a familiar face, and enough twists to keep me questioning absolutely everything I thought I knew. Every time I convinced myself I'd figured something out, Jennifer would casually drop another revelation and send my theories straight out the window.

And speaking of characters... I'd forgotten just how much I adore Calnyra. Her take no bullshit attitude remains one of my favourite things about this series. She's foul mouthed, stubborn, fiercely protective of her people, and will happily throw herself into danger if it means keeping them safe. Watching her continue to fight for the people she loves while navigating everything being thrown at her was incredible.

I also absolutely loved Selene's growth in this book. Watching her fight to become more than the sacrifice everyone expected her to be was so satisfying. She really stepped into her own here and turned into an absolute badass. After everything she's been through, I was cheering for every single win. Honestly, I need Selene and Calnyra to burn down a few empires and cause absolute chaos together in Book 3.

Then there's Griff. Look, I don't know what it is about this man, but every single time he calls Calnyra "Angel" my heart completely melts. It shouldn't work on me every single time, and yet here we are. The slow burn between these two should honestly come with a warning label. The tension, the yearning, the dreams... Jennifer, a warning would have been appreciated. The tension between these two was already unbearable, but then you went and added that. The slow burn continued to torture me in the best possible way, and every tiny crumb of progress had me screaming at my Kindle.

But as much as I loved the romance, the found family remains one of the strongest parts of this series for me. The banter was perfection, the friendships felt so genuine, and that only made the emotional moments hit even harder. Harlow and his emotional support pillows continue to be an absolute delight, and I was ridiculously happy to see the return of Pip, our adorable little glowy Shellin.

Jennifer's world building continues to amaze me. The way she expands the lore, introduces new realms, and slowly peels back layers of secrets feels effortless. Every revelation raises the stakes higher, and the deeper we get into this story, the more obsessed I become with uncovering the truth.

I laughed. I cried. I was stressed. I may have hyperventilated a little. And then came the ending. And that god damn Epilouge.

WHAT IN THE ACTUALL HELL.

I genuinely have so many questions. Between the final revelations and THAT epilogue, Jennifer left me completely shattered and desperate for book three. I have absolutely no idea where this series is heading next, and honestly, that's one of the things I love most about it.

Broken by the Rift is a brilliant sequel packed with danger, secrets, incredible character growth, found family, romantic tension, and so many revelations. If you love badass FMCs, dangerous worlds, emotional damage, and romances that make you work for every scrap of payoff, you need this series in your life.

This book picks up exactly where Kissed by the Rift left off, and from the very first page, the story refuses to slow down. Writing this review without spoilers is nearly impossible, so I’ll simply say this: the slow burn continues to simmer until it finally combusts, and the twists just keep coming.

I usually pride myself on spotting plot twists before they happen, but this one completely blindsided me. I was genuinely shook. It may honestly be one of the best plot twists I’ve ever experienced in a book.

This brilliant sequel throws Calnyra, Griff, and their motley crew deeper into danger as they venture into the Under Realm, uncovering secrets far bigger than they ever expected. The multi-POV format was fantastic, allowing for incredible character development across the board, and the payoff for that painfully delicious slow burn was absolutely scorching.

The story perfectly balances danger, mystery, humour, and heart. The banter had me laughing out loud, the friendships felt genuine, and the emotional moments hit hard. Harlow and her emotional support pillow were a delight, Nyra remains the ultimate badass, and every time Griff called her “Angel,” my heart melted a little.

One of my favourite things about this series is Calnyra herself. Beneath all that fierce bad-bitch energy is a true girl’s girl, and I absolutely loved watching her relationship with Selene develop throughout this book. And Griff? I don’t even have the words to describe how much I adore him and his unwavering feelings for Nyra.

Even the toughest characters showed new layers here, including softer, more vulnerable sides that made me love them even more. The character growth throughout this book was exceptional.

The ending left me desperate for answers and completely obsessed with what comes next. I genuinely have no idea where this story is heading, and that’s exactly why I can’t wait for Book 3.

A beautifully written sequel filled with fantastic character development, laugh-out-loud humour, emotional depth, shocking twists, and a storyline that will stay with me long after the final page.

I’m still pretty new to dark romantasy, but I’m having SO much fun with this series. The characters, the magic, the relationships, the FMC… I’m invested 🖤

I enjoyed Kissed by the Rift so much that I pretty much jumped straight into Broken by the Rift because I was already completely hooked and needed to know what happened next. 😂

First of all… Harlow and Lioren?! I was NOT expecting to become this obsessed with their arc. Lioren really took me by surprise because I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about her before, and somehow now I really, really like her. Watching that icy, tough exterior start to crack around Harlow was ridiculously cute.
This woman went from cold and intimidating to calling him “my Fire male” and I cannot cope. 😭😂 Their whole dynamic completely won me over.

And then there’s Selene. I didn’t quite know whether I trusted her or how I felt about her in book 1, but she has officially won me over on this book. I especially LOVE the sister-like relationship developing between her and Nyra. There’s something so sweet about seeing Nyra slowly build these relationships when she’s spent so much time being defensive and guarded. And I like how she believes in Selene's resilience.

Speaking of Nyra… she continues to be one of my favourite things about this series. 😂 Please never make this woman less foul-mouthed. I love that she can be angry, stubborn, messy, vulnerable and completely incapable of filtering herself. She feels so much more real because of it.

And NYRA AND GRIFF. Their banter, the tension! The way she keeps softening towards him while simultaneously pushing him away. Poor Griff must have gotten whiplash at some point. 😂
I was actually super nervous when the new romantic interests started appearing, especially with those weird spicy dreams that seemed to be hinting at some sort of destiny where they're not end game (?) *please do NOT come between Nyra and Griff after all this tension!* 😂

I was surprised also how much I ended up liking Proxima!

There are so many character dynamics happening now that I’m invested in way more than just the central romance, which I think is one of the things I’m enjoying most about this series. *Hooked!*

Anyone who has ever visited my page for longer than a minute will know that I've sold my soul to Jen and her Dark Moon Saga series, and I'm pretty sure, Broken by the Rift had cemented her as one of my all time favourite authors. (Yes, this means if you've been sitting on this series, then pick it the hell up!)

Not for the first time have I waxed lyrical about Jen's words, the way she draws the reader in, keeps them in a statis of wonder, fear and anticipation as the world, characters and plot unravels before them. It's masterful, and you can tell how much Jen absolutely adores this story and world, you can feel it between each word.

We pick up exactly where book one leaves us, that cliffhanger finally answered (sort of) - but it is not the last surprise or trial our favourite characters have to go through.

Going from the ravages of a waterless, dry and brutal surface, to a lush and plentiful land full of practically immortal warriors, the ragtag group finds themselves before the charismatic and deadly Star God, Vaelros, their new world brutal in a different way.

As Calnyra and Selene fight off the magnetic pull towards their host (and Griff) they find themselves training for a deadly mission - one that if they don't succeed at, could mean the end of both worlds.

Not only has Jen pulled together an exciting, bloody and action packed sequel, she has peppered it with some incredibly emotional and gut punch moments, introduced us to characters we fall in love with and others that we... love to hate.

I love that Whichelo’s tagline for this book is ‘are you ready to be broken by the rift?’ So cute and catchy right?! The way I was NOT prepared for how this book ended just goes to show how much she knew the toll of her words.

In this second instalment of the Dark Moon Rising series we are reunited with our favourite foul mouthed FMC and friends as they navigate the Under Realm and deal with its mysterious leader the Star God, Vaelros. Their new surroundings are just as dangerous with new enemies, trials and so many secrets facing the group.

Oh how I have missed Calnyra and her take no bullshit attitude, she is as protective as ever over her little group and will do anything to keep them all safe! The yearning and all out sexual tension between her and Griff has increased ten-fold and oh my god, those dreams!!! I also love Selene’s confidence and determination to be seen as more than just the sacrifice she was meant to be, soft soles has definitely been taking notes from Calnyra!

Whichelo’s ability to create worlds within worlds is a masterclass in writing. The characters are all complex in their own ways with each having trauma they are healing from, their emotions jump right off the page and into your heart, taking you along for the ride. I also loved the multiple POVs, each one was easy to distinguish who we were following and I feel like we get a better understanding of that character. I have several questions about the ending and THAT epilogue… I need answers now please!!

This book was sooo good!! It didn’t miss a single beat from book one and somehow made the world feel even bigger and more addictive. The new realm and the star god had me hooked instantly. The side characters are absolute standouts too, layered in a way that makes every scene hit harder. And Calnyra and Griff? Their chemistry was unreal, I was practically begging for them to finally snap and unleash. Broken by the Rift by Jennifer Wichelo absolutely lived up to its title because WOW, this book broke me.

After the explosive ending of Kissed by the Rift, I had high expectations going into this sequel, and somehow Jennifer Wichelo exceeded every single one of them. The stakes are higher, the world-building expands in fascinating ways, and the emotional punches hit even harder.

Calnyra's journey was one of my favourite parts of this book. Watching her navigate devastating truths, growing power, family secrets, and impossible choices made for such a compelling read. She continues to grow as a character while remaining flawed, determined, and incredibly easy to root for.
The romance had me completely invested, but what really stood out was how seamlessly it was woven into the larger story. The relationships, loyalty, sacrifice, and devotion all felt authentic against the backdrop of a world teetering on the edge of catastrophe.

And that world-building? Incredible. The mysteries surrounding the Rift, the Star God, and the truths hidden beyond the boundaries of Calnyra's world kept me glued to the pages. Every revelation seemed to raise even more questions, and I loved every second of it.

This is the kind of sequel that doesn't just continue the story—it expands it in every possible way. Bigger stakes, deeper emotions, shocking revelations, and a plot that kept me constantly wondering what would happen next.

If you're a fan of romantasy filled with magic, mystery, heartache, devotion, and world-shattering secrets, this series deserves a place on your TBR.

✨️ I don't even know where to start with this book! It was everything I wanted and so much more than I was expecting.

📖 I knew I was going to be broken by this book, left in tears and in soul crushing despair. What wasn't on my bingo card was to be so flawed by plot twists that literally BROKE MY BRAIN! The epilogue never once even crossed my little mind! 🤯 I have many questions and theories but no ability to formulate them into sentences. My brain is fried! 😅

🩷⭐️ The love square evolves into a love a pentagon and if I'm honest, I'm not even a little mad with these latest 'complications.' 😏🔥 My love for Calnyra and Griff continues, my icy heart has completely thawed to Selene and is melting over Sam. But, my BB Harlow will ALWAYS have my heart and soul. His dynamic with Lioren 🔥🥵✨️ that has me unable to breathe!

🌶 The spice was spicy and the slow burn continued to torture me. There was no relief until I was screaming and desperate, it was perfect! 🫠✨️

🌙 I LOVED the multiple POV's (some were so surprising!) and learning more about Lioren, the Under Realm, and some new characters. There wasn't a moment that wasn't packed with new and intriguing information, witty combacks and just pure female badassery. I laughed, I cried, I hyperventilated.

The book follows on from Kissed. Calnyra and the crew are in the Under Realm and have to now face a whole bunch of new challanges, uncovering truths and growing powers.

You have cute AF nicknames that make me want to be called a Cookie Crumb, you feel like the whole book is a giant edging (which is quoted in the book) You have characters that you question whether or not they are ok to like or if we have to hate them, there are trials and love pentagons, pillow kinks and a bread lover.

Just as you think you have a handle on what is going on. You get to the epilogue and then life as we know it is over. I cannot express how twisty that ending was. I fell asleep with 40 pages to go. Woke at 2am and had to finish and then couldn't sleep because I was trying to understand WHAT IN WORLD I JUST READ and then had to re read it over and over.

Absoloute emotional damage, heartache, tension, and a world ending plot line.

If you are wanting a book where you get to the end and you just stare at a wall wondering I would never have ever thought this is where we would end up. Jennifer is a witch. Incredible. I cannot wait to see what she does with book 3.

Calnyra's search for answers takes the story in an exciting new direction, revealing more mysteries surrounding her mother and the world beyond the Rift. Every new discovery raised even more questions, and I loved watching the layers of the story unfold.

The stakes feel even higher in this instalment. While the first book focused on survival and adrenaline, this one leans further into its magic, mystery, and romance, expanding the world in a way that kept me completely invested.

I absolutely loved how the end played out with the twist. It added another compelling layer to the overarching story and left me eager to see where the series goes next.

Once again, I was completely swept into this world. Every page kept me engaged, making it easy to lose track of time as I read. I loved returning to these characters, and now I desperately need the next book.

I stayed up until 2am finishing it, woke up, immediately read the epilogue again and… WOW. I did not see that coming, but honestly? I loved it.

Broken by the Rift picks up right where Kissed by the Rift left us and wastes absolutely no time. It takes off running and does not slow down.

The found family in this series is everything and honestly one of the main reasons I love dystopian books so much. There’s something about broken people finding their family in a world falling apart that gets me every time.

The badass FMCs are still doing what they do best, but this time we got to see their softer sides too… including Lioren (who knew?! 😂)

I’m so excited for book 3 because I genuinely have no idea what’s coming next, but I am completely here for the direction this story is taking.

Now I just need answers… because that ending?!

I was so desperate once I finished that I actually asked Jennifer herself when Book 3 is happening... and she gave me just enough to keep my hope alive, but not nearly enough to satisfy me. 😅 So now I'm surviving purely on delusion, hopes, and dreams that we won't have to wait too long. HAHA! But Jen listen, don't you dare rush perfection. Take ALL the time you need. I will happily wait until the end of the earth if that's what it takes because whenever it arrives... I. AM. READY! 😬😬

This was such a fantastic follow-up to Book 1. You know when a sequel doesn't just continue the story but actually elevates everything you already loved? That's exactly what this book was for me. 🙂‍↕️ It honestly seemed like Jennifer's writing really started to shine with this one. The writing felt more confident, emotions hit even harder, the humour had me laughing out loud at 1am, and every character felt so much more developed. She took everything I loved about the first book and built on it in the best possible way. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I could genuinely sit here for HOURS and talk about every single character in this book because I love them all that much... but then we'd all be here reading an essay instead of a review. 🤭 So I'll keep it (relatively) short and just say this... I absolutely adore every single member of this crew. Not one of them feels unnecessary or forgettable. Their dynamic and all the different types of relationships has been so fun to read. 🥰🥰🥰

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be returning to the recovery waiting room after that ending, where I'll be patiently (and only going slightly insane) waiting for Book 3. 🤣

BBTR throws us straight back into the action and picks up where KBTR left off.
I love the retro action movie vibes of these books, it makes everything instantly feel higher stakes but like it's not taking itself too seriously.
Calnyra remains a truly badass woman, and this book sees her ready herself for a new quest, learn to tame her temper and her impulses, discover more about herself and her past, and find new ways to terrorise Griff (but also to open up to him). I'm loving her character growth.
Our other characters continue to keep things interesting too and I actually couldn't tell you who my favourite is after this book - it might actually be Sam. He's such a sweetheart!
The change of setting and the new storyline introduced had me guessing - and the new villain was hardly less hate inspiring than the KBTR antagonist.
The way this book ended absolutely blew my mind, I did not see this coming AT ALL. I can't wait to see how this ends!

What happened in this book???? What was that ending???? Why am I staring at the wall???? JUST WHAT????

Omg okay when I started reading the second book, it was a slow start. Then things started picking up with the promise of a quest to fix a pearl that powers the underworld. Then comes some strange shared sexual tension with the god who rules the underworld. And griff who’s clearly in love with Nyra is also feeling the same. So something is clearly wrong and I couldn’t put my finger on it. And trust me I tried. So I kept reading through the whirlwind of things that keeps happening because it is so interesting. The world building was top notch. The storyline was unique. And then that ending? It kinda answered that thing I couldn’t put a finger on but left me with so many more questions.

Honestly I LOVED this book. It was so good and I really hope she writes the third book asap.

Everyone needs to read these!

I don’t know that I have been so shocked by the twists and turns in a book in such a long time! That epilogue was absolutely mind blowing and INSANE!

Heading into this sequel I was so excited and the actual reading experience didn’t disappoint for a second! Yet again, Jen writes a plot so captivating I cannot put it down. I was laughing with the crew, questioning what the hell was going to happen and SOBBING!

Throughout this read I was reminded so many times why I love Calnyra so much. As much as she is a bad bitch, she is at her core a Girl’s Girl and I LOVED the relationship she and Selene fostered through Broken. And Griff… no words can describe my deep love for him and his feelings towards Nyra 🩵

I cannot wait to continue their journey in Book 3!

The way this series has me in a stranglehold!
It kicked off right where the first book ended and it's honestly the perfect balance of world and character building.

This eclectic group of characters find themselves in the Under Realm and facing new challenges with higher stakes and even more emotional damage.

As with the first instalment the characters all have so much personality, they're likeable and you move through the story constantly cheering for them all. And my favourite part? The found family they've created! They argue they have banter and they always have each other's backs!
The spice was 🔥

Excuse me while I stare at a wall for the next week spiralling with predictions!

WOW!!! One of my anticipated reads for this year, this follows Kissed by the Rift and boy, does it deliver! In less than 400 pages, Jen keeps you guessing as to what in the world is happening - until you hit the epilogue and then, BAM 🤯 I had to re-read just to make sure I hadn’t missed something!
This is laugh out loud funny and has great banter and a bit of spice thrown in. Harlow has an emotional support pillow, Nyra is still a badass and whenever Griff called Nyra Angel, I melted a little.
A few of my favourite quotes: “Yes. Death cat returns!” and “Fucking fuckdust, Nyra. You scared the shit out of me.”

Broken by the Rift took everything I loved about the first book and turned the emotional intensity all the way up.

Jennifer Whichelo continues to build a world full of danger, secrets, survival, and a connection between characters that just keeps pulling you in. The stakes feel higher, the emotions hit harder, and the twists had me constantly questioning what I thought I knew.

This series has that addictive mix of fantasy, tension, found family, and characters who are beautifully flawed. The kind of book where you say “just one more chapter” and suddenly it’s way too late at night.

The Rift may be dangerous… but I’m already desperate to go back. 🌙✨

Wow, what an incredible sequel!

Broken by the Rift had me hooked from the very first page. The action, the twists, the character growth, the romance... everything was so well done.

I loved being back with these characters, especially Calnyra, who continues to be an absolute badass. She is fierce, stubborn, and willing to do anything for the people she loves. The found family remains one of my favourite parts of the series, and the slow-burn romance kept me fully invested.

Jennifer Whichelo delivered a sequel full of secrets, danger, emotional moments, and surprises I never saw coming.

And that ending... A must read!

I was SOOOOO happy to be thrown straight back into this world with all the characters I fell in love with from book one. The world building just keeps getting better and the twists UMMMMM EXCUSE ME??? I was screaming, laughing, crying, and giggling like I wasn’t completely unhinged
This story has me so invested and that ending THAT ENDING!!!!!! I need more. More of the world, more of the characters, more everything.

Without giving anything away (no spoilers here).

I jumped straight out of book 1 & into book 2. It flowed so well!

I loved the slow burn continuing to burn, I loved the found family elements continuing to grow, I loved the continued badass attitude of Nyra, & I loved our little Pip.

I also love Lioren as a character & I was glad to be able to delve a bit deeper into her.

The ending… 🤯
I’m definitely still a little confused. I understand what has happened, but I don’t understand how the next book is going to pan out based on what’s happened!?

I’m very keen for book 3 & seeing how Jen brings it all together!

Brilliant sequel to Kissed by the Rift, danger and secrets are around every corner and our motley crew of Calnyra, Griff and friends uncover much more than they were bargaining for when they enter the Under Realm.
Multi POV which I loved, so much character development and the payoff for the slowest of burns was scorching!
Bad bitch energy, green flag MMCs and a dystopian world I couldn’t recommend getting into more.

Broken by the Rift is a fantastic continuation of the story and we feel Jennifer really finds her voice and groove with this story. The book not only has development in its world building and overarching story but also in its characters. What stood out for us was one of our favourite tropes - political machinations and schemes. We love to hate the villains in this one. They are so delightfully awful and enjoy the back and forth between characters throughout the story. And lastly, so we dont give too much away, the ending will leave you looking for more pages and impatiently waiting for book three.

I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of Calnyra, the foul-mouthed protagonist in Broken by the Rift. The relationships within the “crew” continue to deepen and we gain valuable perspectives from various angles, which I particularly appreciated.

The spice is on point! I relish reading steamy scenes that don’t shy away from using “proper” language.

The twist, yes the twist, shifts the book’s tone but feels entirely necessary. I’m genuinely curious about how this is addressed in book three.

A fantastic read by an indie Australian author.

Broken by the Rift has immediately become one of the best books I have ever read.

I can normally see a plot twist coming, but let me tell you I was shooketh. It is the greatest plot twist in a book that I have ever experienced.

You forget that it’s a sci-fi fantasy and then BAM.

I wish I could lose my memory so I could experience it again.
