One of the best business books I have ever read by an NZ author. Incredible, will be buying for all my friends.
Read
July 21, 2026I have been reading self-help, how to and inspirational business books for nearly fifty years. But this one, Grant Baker's 'No Pit Stops, The Business of Going All In' is a bit more special than most of the books out there for a couple of stand out reasons.
First of all Grant’s just a normal kiwi, pretty much like the rest of us;
A normal Kiwi who’s achieved, often to his own surprise, very not-normal results. He’s not full of himself, quite the opposite, retiring, serious and focused on four things that most of us can relate to; Family. Business. Money and Cars.
He went to Waikato Teachers College (because there were more girls and you got paid by the government to go), plenty of kiwi blokes did that. Dropped out, plenty did that too when like Grant they realised the govt wanted something in return for all the girls and money.
Also like many of us he has tried his hand since at all sorts of business ideas, some failed, some didn't. Like most of us he worried about failure all the way through his 48 years of business. (see, the man is normal, which makes him and the book so likeable).
Most of us haven't succeeded like Grant did, and yet it’s easy to like him because of his genuine surprise when things go well -- we can like him too because the stuff that did go well was the result of doing what even he saw at the time was a bit crazy and instead of being super confident, was constantly anxious about or aware of the potential that the whole thing might go down the toilet.
Actually, I lied, there are three things, not two that make this a very special book.
The second thing is that the book is his story, a kiwi story that makes you feel like you’re getting to know him –from his always wanting to be a racing driver from the age of two but never really making it, sort of but not really -- from being told he was dumb by teachers and parents, and by his own admission only ever at best an average student.
The third thing that makes this book a must read is it’s inspirational. But not in a predictable ‘rockstar, I can never fail, social media hype’ sort of way. Inspirational instead because this normal bloke quietly went about getting to the top of the NZ business world and we are there with him at all the exciting bits as we turn the pages.
Although he was quiet, ‘under the radar ‘as the pundits like to quip, the businesses he either founded or backed have been loud, louder by far than him, which once again make Grant and his story so likeable. They are businesses that have changed life in New Zealand in a good way. They’re worth mentioning again, and this is a seriously shortened list – Empower, 42 Below, Ecoya, Trilogy and Turners Car Auctions.
Until now you didn’t know much if anything about Grant, most of us had never heard of him, this is your chance to get to know him and the real story behind so many great NZ Businesses. Get the book.

Great story
Thoroughly enjoyed reading Grants story. Found it inspirational. Very brave and bold. The amount of successful businesses he has been apart of speaks to the levels of his success. Great read.
