After I read How We Got to the Moon , I had the urge to read The Martian , not sure why. For an even more incomprehensible reason that has nothing to do with my obsession for completeness, I started to read the very first book published by the author Andy Weird under the pseudonym Jack Sharp. I will never blame my non-existing mania!
It took me only few paragraphs to like it, few more pages to get used to a style that, even though slightly unripe, is smooth and has personality, but I recognized from the beginning that he was taking as example Mr. Tolkien - he created a world with his history, languages, and more. Mind you they are only hinted and I'm not comparing him to the father of fantasy, but it gave the book the right depth and solid structure that a good book and a good author always should have when they want to place themselves in the sci-fi and fantasy scenario. It managed where others have tried and failed, and the result is an entertraining story with living characters, set in a world that could more or less easily become our own.

This is by Andy Weir very early on in his writing career. On the forum at his website, he says that he seriously thinks about deleting the file. As it is, it is not easy to find.

I read about 25% of the story. The writing was good enough that I would have stayed with it, but I lost interest in the story of a couple of crooks going against impossible odds to steal the most valuable thing in the known universe. This book is not even close to the quality of The Martian, but it does show an author with a lot of promise.

My first read from Andy Weir, back when his website was just an archive of everything he'd ever written! He was already gaining some traction as an online gem by the time I found him. This story was lots of fun, and pretty great for a beginning self published author.

Jack Sharp is the alias that Andy Weir used when he wrote this novel (years before The Martian was released) and that's the only reason why I was interested in reading this. It was basically the only reason I need because this is the second book by him that I've thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. I just really love his way of writing and the way he uses humor to infuse his writing and his characters. I can't wait for his next book because I will devour that the moment it's released.

The world he builds here is fascinating and his capacity to create this world just amazes me. I actually kinda want a sequel now just to see if Dan Jackson ever gets the chance to outsmart and capture Shanex Exxel. But in any case, this was a very, very good standalone novel with lots of twists and turns and full of colorful characters. I don't think I have a negative comment about it.
