Benefits Included by Chantal Bookal is one of those romances where the history between the characters matters just as much as what is happening in the present. Kennedy and Dreux have known each other for years, and their relationship carries all the weight of friendship, missed opportunities, unresolved feelings, and the question of what could have happened if their timing had ever been right.

What I enjoyed most was how deeply rooted their connection felt. This was not a relationship built solely around physical attraction. Kennedy and Dreux know each other in a way that only comes from having years of history together. There is familiarity and comfort between them, but there is also vulnerability. Even after spending time apart and building separate lives, that connection is still there.

The chemistry between them was also one of the strongest parts of the story. There is a constant pull between Kennedy and Dreux, but underneath the attraction are emotions neither of them has ever completely been able to leave behind. Dreux feels like a safe place for Kennedy, while Kennedy is one of the few people capable of reaching the parts of Dreux he tends to keep guarded. That emotional intimacy made the “deeper than the physical” aspect of the story stand out for me.

Their circumstances, however, are complicated. Very complicated. There were plenty of moments when I wanted Kennedy and Dreux to sit down, communicate, and finally deal with everything that had been sitting between them for years. Their story involves missed opportunities, difficult choices, other relationships, old feelings, and timing that never seems to cooperate. At times it was frustrating, but that frustration also made sense because neither character was dealing with something simple.

I also appreciated how their past was incorporated into the story. Their history did not feel like information included simply to explain why they were attracted to each other. It helped me understand their decisions in the present. You see why their bond has been so difficult to completely sever and why reconnecting cannot be solved by simply admitting that they still have feelings for each other. There is too much history and too much life that has happened in between.

Kennedy and Dreux really embody the “right person, wrong time” trope. The question becomes how many times can the timing be wrong before you have to decide whether the relationship is worth fighting for or whether loving someone sometimes means finally letting them go?

At its core, Benefits Included is a story about friendship, love, vulnerability, choices, second chances, and a connection that continues finding its way back to the surface. It explores the difference between moving forward with your life and actually moving on from someone who has been part of your heart for years.

If you enjoy Black romance, friends-to-lovers, second chances, complicated relationships, unresolved feelings, emotional chemistry, and strong “it’s always been you” energy, Benefits Included is worth checking out.

Thank you to Chantal Bookal for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own!

5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Of course this book is incredible! Kennedy and Dreux are officially two of my favorite characters of the year.

I am an absolute sucker for a second-chance romance, and this book delivered in every way. The slow burn? Exquisite. The way we had to work for every little thing we received? Even better. Every ounce of tension, every hard conversation, every vulnerable moment, and every spicy scene felt earned. Trust me, the TEA was piping hot, and the spice was spicing!

What made this story so special was that it was never just about two people finding their way back to each other. Beneath the romance was a beautiful exploration of self-discovery, establishing boundaries, and learning to understand yourself before you can fully show up for someone else. It reminded me that sometimes, the hardest conversations are the most liberating ones. They force us to confront the things we’ve avoided, communicate the things we’ve buried, and make room for the growth we desperately need. Growth requires honesty, even when the truth is messy and the outcome is uncertain.

I also loved the conflict resolution between the characters. Watching them navigate difficult conversations, take accountability, and work through their issues instead of simply sweeping everything under the rug made their journey feel that much more meaningful.

Kennedy and Dreux had me invested. The chemistry, the tension, the vulnerability, the growth. I ate it all up and now? I’m left wanting more! More of them, more of their world, more of everything. When a story makes you feel this invested in its characters, saying goodbye is never easy.

An incredible second-chance romance with heart, heat, depth, and a beautiful reminder that love isn’t just about finding your way back to someone. Sometimes, it’s about finding your way back to yourself first.

I’m a sucker for a second-chance romance; Benefits Included was exceptional, and I ate it up.

These characters were special and multi-layered. Found myself really being drawn into the FMC, Kennedy’s, story. I really felt for her; she is an ambitious, stubborn go-getter. I’m also a Taurus so her character reminded me of myself in a lot of ways especially her dedication to building her career and pursuing her passions. Channeling Beyoncés “I’m that girl,” heck yes. She is going through a lot and you can tell she is really trying to do better for herself but she’s stuck in her own ways. I love the mental health rep too & the author mapped out the therapy sessions greatly. Dreaux, our MMC, is likable too, he’s charming respectful, and knows how to treat a lady. I loved how he stood on business. One of the things I loved about this book was the friendships. Both between Dreaux and Kennedy, and also between their core group of friends. I loved the banter and meet-ups, especially that getaway trip to the Poconos. Sage and Tahira are the best Gworls! I need a sequel with one of their stories. Overall, the chemistry between the FMC and MMC was unmatched, years of friendship coming back for an opportunity to try again. If you like a slow burn, friends-to-lovers, a rekindled spark, and mutual pinning you’ll love this. I cannot wait to read more from Chantal!

Thank you to the author for the e-arc! I really enjoyed this one.

If you love a good slow burn with loads of Yearning, this is the perfect book for you !

Kennedy and Dreux’s friendship is raw, it’s realistic, its emotional, it’s explosive and it’s yearning. Benefits Included takes us on the journey of a love that is both terrifying and excruciating to ignore. A journey where two souls that are intertwined in ways that can never be explained navigate years of confusion, fear and heartbreak whilst somehow still finding their way back to each other anyway.

While Kennedy struggles with denial, finding herself , building her career, and trying to save her marriage, Dreux is navigating through life by starting over in every aspect of his life. the two are reunited and bombs go off in every single part of their lives leaving them with the choice to finally take the path they should’ve a long time ago or continue in denial and live in pain a little longer.

Favorite thing about the book:

What I love most about this book is that the author doesn’t shy away from the fact that Kennedy needs healing in so many different aspects. I love the fact that the realistic depiction on best friends falling in love isn’t always easy. sometimes we make decisions out of fear and we bury it so deep that we don’t realize that we have been living in robot mode for so long. numbing ourselves to a happiness, a safety and a freedom we didn’t think we deserved. this book was

What happens when acting out of fear causes the very thing you're trying to avoid?
Kennedy and Dreux were high school besties with undeniable chemistry that everyone around them could see except Kennedy. Terrified of losing their friendship, she held back until an ultimatum tore them apart. Years later, an accidental bump in on a New York City train throws them back into each other's orbits, forcing them to confront a past they never truly put to rest.
This story is a masterclass in the friends to lovers and second chance romance tropes. I loved the heavy cat & mouse dynamic and Dreux’s unwavering, patient devotion. Because that man said he is not loosing her ever again.

What elevates this book beyond a standard romance is its rich, emotional layers. Bookal weaves in heavy themes of grief, secrets, and the healing power of therapy, giving the characters immense depth. the pacing was fantastic with zero dull moments, and the secondary cast leaves me dying for more stories about their friend group. Because their friend group is truly a power house and connected to people that helped our FMC go accomplish her dreams. This just shows you how when the time is right what is meant for you will always be for you no matter how bad the enemy tries to break you.

If you love slow-burn tension, high-stakes emotional growth, and a deeply earned happily ever after where love is worth the ultimate gamble, you need to add this to your TBR!

I received an advance copy and am giving an honest review.

I enjoyed Kennedy and Dreux's story. There are parts that I found familiar. I've been the runner, and I've been the one left behind. The emotional connection you can have with a friend deepens when you spend most of your time together; unspoken feelings take root and wait their chance to surface. When a situation causes a rift between Kennedy and Dreux during their college years, it sits unanswered for years until fate intervenes.
What follows is a journey of self-reflection for both, finding space to understand each other, and considering whether to act on those long-suppressed feelings. When we're young, we don't always make good decisions, nor do we know how to navigate the aftermath. Dreux and Kennedy have to face the emotions that are more present now that they are older and reconnected; each has to understand what it means while also navigating the situations they are already in.

The story is well-paced, engaging, and relatable. I will definitely read it again to see if I feel differently, since I was drawn more toward Dreux's perspective. The friends were written well enough that you want to see what's next for them. I recommend this for those who enjoy friends-to-lovers, second-chance, and the heart wants what it wants tropes.

Sometimes acting out of fear can cause the very thing you're avoiding to happen anyway.

Moving a beautiful friendship to a relationship is a tricky thing. There's the very real possibility that you will lose the friendship. But if the gamble pays off, you end up with your soul mate. Kennedy and Dreux are high school besties with an undeniable chemistry. They have to decide if love is worth the gamble.
Kennedy Donovan is a driven, career woman with a singular focus and a plan for how her life will go. Dreux is her old bestie that she's reconnected with. He's just trying to find his place in her life again in whatever capacity she needs him. This story takes us on their journey from friends to lovers to who knows what.
As is typical with the friends to lovers trope, the cat and mouse game is heavy here. Kennedy had me deep sighing several times. She loves getting in her own way. My heart aches for Dreux throughout the story, but I love a persistent man.
Overall, this is a cute rom-com that's reminiscent of the early 2000s black romance films. Lots of fun moments amongst friends and a few tense moments of mild drama. If you're looking for those feelings again, this is perfect.

Thank you Chantal Bookal for the opportunity to review this ARC. This is my honest opinion.

ARC Review

Would you risk losing a lifelong friendship for a potential at love with your person?

I'm as sucker for a friends to lovers/second chance romance. Benefits Included did not disappoint!

This story reminds you of that early 2000's black love. The early 2000's friend group that's supportive, corrects you when you're wrongn and celebrates you when you're right, it's always good vibes. That early 2000's black family where everyone is welcomed.

Kennedy and Dreaux were best friends in school and drifted apart through distance and unspoken words in college. One fated encounter brought them back together years later. The undeniable attraction is still the same, the the longing still there however a few obstacles are still in the way.

Though Kennedy's stubborness becomes a tad bit frustrating, you'll understand her why. Dreaux gives us the calmness, peace, and reassurance we all desire in a partner.

This is a right person, wrong time slow burn romance. The pacing keeps you engaged, the familial drama is just enough to peak your interest and the betrayal will have you saying "I know you lying". Chantal does an amazing job bringing Kennedy and Dreaux's story to life. I look forward to more of her work.

Thank you for the advanced copy.

Thank you for this ARC access.

A second chance at love is one of my favorites. Kennedy Donovan and Dreux Edwards secretly yearned for each other since high school, but neither of them was ready to take the leap from friendship into something more. Until one summer night in college changed everything. The fear or what if set in causing a rift between the two.

However, fate brings them back together years later and the tension between the two is just as hot as it was back then. We all know our upbringing can shape us for better or for worse. Kennedy is a prime example of how one's childhood can cause reservations as an adult. Everyone around these two can see the intense magnetic draw except them. There is so much back and forth that I honestly wasn't sure how it would end. Dreaux is exactly what most would want in a MMC. As a friends to lovers trope this one contains all the good and bad that can result once the line is crossed. There are emotional roller-coaster moments that will have you pleading for the two to get it together. You really get a true slow burn with this one. There are themes of friendship, grief, therapy , emotional healing, divorce, loss, cheating and more in the multilayer read. However, I think most will enjoy the storyline.

Thank you to the author for this advance e-arc! I enjoyed this novel SO much!

Friends to lovers can sometimes make me mad simply because hello your person is right here! But from youth Kennedy and Dreaux knew they needed each other in their lives they just didn’t realize what that meant in totality. As they got older and we learned more about them it was for sure giving more second chance romance which I’m also here for!

The development of not only the 2 main characters but their friends was great. I really want to know more about what’s going on with the friends. I also felt like the pacing was perfect I didn’t have that “I’m bored” let’s move on moment. Every chapter gave pertinent information. Now it did get a little confusing with the future and past chapters jumping so much and the last 3 chapters being all present ,could’ve been put into less but this is a dual POV so perhaps that’s why this was done? Idk it confused me a little.

This one just has so many layers! Grief, love, secrets, and therapy just to name a few. This is definitely one I would recommend to those who enjoy a good beat building story with some tension in it.

“I promise to find you in every lifetime. I can’t picture myself with any other person but you.”

If you are looking for a Black, contemporary romance:

-29 y/o MCs
-dual POV
-second chance
-friends to lovers
-he falls first & harder
-soft spice
-slow burn tension
-heavy yearning
-mental health & therapy rep
-nostalgic Black references
-double epilogue
-under 300 pages
-based in New York

This was too cute.
The dynamic between Kennedy & Dreaux was sweet, relatable & realistic. Kennedy is ambitious, head strong & goal oriented. While Dreaux is a lover boy who lives a life of leaning into wherever his emotions takes him. He was my favorite character.

We got more than a love story & I adored that the most. This read like a TV show or a movie where we got to see the lives of both MCs and their separate lives away from the slow burning romance. I feel like it made the story even more enjoyable.

This was my first book from this author and it won’t be my last. I wouldn’t be mad at a book 2 interconnected standalone between two specific characters (I won’t name any names). But, I look forward to reading what Chantal Bookal.

Thank you so much to the author for the e-ARC!

This book is a slow burn, second chance romance where the past is just as impactful as the present. The story is full of yearning and feels like a 90s love story! Kennedy struggles in this book with grief, with healing from divorce, with reigniting of her life long dream and reconnecting with her favorite person after years of not speaking. I feel like the author did a great job depicting her healing journey! I also liked that the author included how one person’s healing journey can impact another person. I loved that it wasn’t all sugar cookies and rainbows between Kennedy and Dreux because they had some real issues to work though together. Now, I will say there were points in the book, where I felt like Kennedy’s friend said, “take us out the group chat!” Because they could’ve been together.

Overall solid, second chance romance where I felt like it was actually realistic and felt genuine between the characters! I enjoyed all the messiness that comes along with true soul mates.

Kennedy and Dreux, have liked each other since high school but never acted on it. After a big moment in college, they drift apart, only to meet again years later. Even though both have other relationships, their old feelings come back strong.

I love me a good friends to lovers, second chance romance. Everything about this romance gave me all the feels! It perfectly shows the struggle of unspoken feelings and the challenge of timing in relationships in the most realistic way. Kennedy and Dreux, were very relatable because they both have their own lives and challenges but still can’t ignore their connection. I appreciated the dual POV and how it allowed me as a reader to feel their emotions deeply, making their journey feel genuine and heartfelt. I was rooting for them to finally take a chance on each other despite the obstacles.

I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of the book, Benefits Included. This book was written beautifully - the pacing, the arc, the characters. When i was finished with the book, I was left feeling like this story was perfectly packaged. The characters Kennedy and Dreux have a chemistry that strengthens throughout the book. The friends to lovers trope is one of my favorites to read and this is a damn good one. I loved that there was so much personal growth leading up to the #KREUX love story. Even the side characters you fall in love with and will keep you wanting more from them! The author was able to move through different POVs and timelines seamlessly - I loved how we got to see how each character felt in the past and present. Amazing book - 10/10 I recommend!!!

If you love a friends-to-lovers or second chance romance trope, Benefits Included should be your next read.

Get ready to fall in love with Kennedy and Dreux’s story and how they find their way back to each other after spending years apart. This book was beautifully written — incredibly descriptive and often very relatable. I appreciated how real life challenges that many people face daily, such as anxiety, was incorporated.

I also enjoyed reading from both Kennedy and Dreux’s perspectives. The dual POV allowed insight to their individual feelings on the situation that unfolded between them, as well as what it was like to finally be reunited.

Overall, Benefits Included is an amazing read filled with romance, emotion and relatable moments. You will not be disappointed.

Love me a good friends to lovers that’s also a slow burn!

Two high school besties Kennedy and Dreux who have always had feelings for each other but never acted on them reconnect after falling out in college. Kennedy is dealing with marriage and career that
seem to be making her more miserable than happy while Dreux is starting out a new relationship and starting over completely.

Throughout the book you can really see them having those old feelings coming back while also trying to start up a friendship again. The storyline didn’t feel rushed and was very realistic to two people who were always meant to be.

**I received an advance copy from the author. This is my honest review.**

Benefits Included almost felt like a little heartbreak in the best way. Chantal Bookal wrote a story that felt incredibly realistic and made the FMC ask, “What if I made the wrong choice?” I loved how grown this story felt, especially in the way the characters navigated their relationships, choices, and consequences. I found myself reading and saying, “Exactly, girl!” 🤣 I’m always here for a good friends-to-enemies-to-lovers story, and this one definitely delivered. There was so much history and emotion between these characters that made their journey back to each other even more satisfying. ☺️

Kennedy and Dreux were the definition of right person, wrong time. Their friendship always had something deeper underneath it, but Kennedy’s fear of losing Dreux ultimately pushed him away. Years later, a chance encounter in New York gives them another opportunity, and Dreux makes it clear he’s not losing her twice.
I loved their cat and mouse dynamic, Dreux’s patience, and how the story explored grief, secrets, therapy, and healing alongside the romance. The friend group was also everything! This was a beautiful reminder that sometimes what’s meant for you finds its way back when you’re finally ready for it. Thank you to the Author for the Advanced Reader Copy all opinions are my own.

This was definitely a cute Right Man, Wrong Time romance 😍
Kennedy and Dreux were childhood friends who took a chance to become more and quickly ran in the opposite direction! A terrible turn of events in her marriage left Kennedy flailing and a chance reunion with her long lost Dreux Bear might be exactly what she needed!

I love a good friends-to-lovers and second-chance love story. I will say there were times in the second half of the book where I really wanted to shake Kennedy! Tell that man how you really feel!!!! Dreux was a steady and patient.

The side characters also gave great energy.... here's hoping they show up in some future books!! 👀

Team #Kreux all the way! Not only was this a beautiful love story of finally the right person right time, there was also a journey back to one self with Kennedy. She grew so much as a person and Dreux was a catalyst to that growth. I loved how vulnerable Dreux was with his fears, it showed his strength. You should definitely read this book!

This second chance romance is one that will pull you in both directions and have you yelling at the MCs over their decisions! (They had me stressed!)

I really enjoyed the story from their history to learning their adult selves and the evolution of the relationship.

If you're looking for some drama, spice and a beautiful love story, it's right here!
