Robby Gallaty's "Growing Up" was a great primer on the spiritual disciplines that aid a disciple as he/she grows in Christ. The sequel, "Firmly Planted," helps to establish a believer in the faith through a firm assurance of salvation, rooted in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Once armed with that assurance, the Christian life is marked by walking in accordance with the Spirit, putting off the old self/putting on the new self in Christ, and dealing with the temptations that come from both our internal sinful nature and the external attacks from the enemy. Knowing is Half the Battle (ch. 7), and God has given us everything we need to stand strong in the battle (Ch. 9)... putting the full armor of God, and taking up the sword of the Spirit, which is His Word.

Robby Gallaty writes passionately about discipleship, and in this second book in the series, "Firmly Planted: How to Cultivate A Faith Rooted in Christ" Gallaty provides a helpful resource that one may use to disciple a new believer. Gallaty covers such basic issues as assurance of salvation, marks of a true believer, one's identity in Christ, being led by the Spirit of God, the Christian's battle against Satan and the Flesh, triumphing over temptation, and putting on the full armor of God.

Each of Gallaty's chapters are helpful, biblical and easy to understand. I would use this book with someone who was very new to the faith or with someone who has not been steeped in the teaching of God's Word. But, in my opinion this would be too simplistic of a book for a more seasoned believer. That is not a criticism of the book; rather, it is a statement of who may be the appropriate audience for the book.

One criticism that I would make of this book is that it is almost too simplistic, and perhaps, it is too light on the presentation of Scripture. This may be an appropriate starter for a new believer, but this will not "firmly plant" a new believer in the faith. To follow the analogy even further, I would classify this book as starter fertilizer. However, in the proper setting this could be a very helpful work to begin the process of discipleship with a novice. Happy reading!

As I have admitted on other reviews, I have become a great fan of Robby Gallaty. This last book that I read from him did nothing to cool that affinity. In Firmly Planted: How to Cultivate a Faith Rooted in Christ, Robby takes the reader through foundational lessons necessary to help believers become just what the title suggests. Dealing with topics from assurance of salvation, identity in Christ, resisting temptation, spiritual disciplines, and on and on, this book is like sitting down with Robby and being discipled. Coupled with thought-provoking questions throughout each chapter (and not just at the end), this book is a great manual for being discipled and then using it to go on and disciple others.

There's nothing really wrong with this book, theologically it's pretty good, it has some good anecdotes, it just suffers from viewing life through a modern evangelical world view. As such it has a rather weak anthropology, it seems to believe or imply that if you think right you will act right. Anyone who has read any of Jamie Smith's cultural liturgy series will know that this is up for debate. So while everything written in it is true, it comes across as a little cerebral, a passing on of information that doesn't quite feel grounded in the reality of life. A lot of theory and stock phrases with, in my view, not enough attention paid to how these things are worked out day to day

This book and those others in the series are a treasure in understanding discipleship. Thank you, Dr Gallaty, for helping us reconnect with Scripture and Christ's commission.

Of all the "how to be a good Christian" books I've read, this one more than any other made faith in Jesus Christ sound like an OK thing to do if you didn't have anything else going on in your life, something that could be taken or left. Meh.

Finished this for D-Group. Hits on a lot of things I already know so it didn’t keep me totally captivated. Has great truths in it and would be a great read for new Christian’s seeking to understand discipleship!

Very good

These three books are excellent for disciple making groups. I highly recommend this book, growing up, and bearing fruit as a three book set.
