It’s Halle Henry’s final year at Lakeview Academy, and she is determined to make it her best year yet. But when drugs are discovered in her boyfriend Alex’s backpack and he is expelled, Halle’s life spins out of control. Refusing to believe the accusations against him, Halle vows to get to the bottom of what really happened and bring Alex back to campus so they can graduate together. Now, all Halle has to do is save her boyfriend, solve a murder, graduate from high school, and keep from getting killed in the process.

Fast-paced and full of suspense! Scream is my favourite book in the Lakeview Series. Stacey R. Campbell has created another incredible mystery novel that will make your head spin with its action, feisty main character and boarding school setting.
Scream is a very quick book to read. This book has potential murderers working inside the main character, Halle’s, school. The main characters work together to solve the mystery. Like the other books in the series, Scream is full of suspense and definitely keeps readers guessing what will happen next. Since these books are companions, readers can really jump into any of the books without feeling lost. At the end of each story, all of the loose ends are tied up nicely. There is no need to know more, but readers will be hoping for another book to keep the series going.
Characters that are relatable are so important to the YA genre. Halle, the main character in the Lakeview Series is an undeniably charismatic character. Campbell has created a brave and independent female protagonist that is both believable and a role model. Halle isn’t afraid to speak her mind and has the right amount of humour to go along with it. She is a character that is easy to fall in love with.
The setting of Scream and the other books in the series is a boarding school. What really makes these books interesting is how Stacey R Campbell has created the setting from her own boarding school experiences. The descriptions and scenes are so well written that readers can easily envision the hallways and rooms as the mystery unfolds. This adds such an amazing element to the story.
Scream is a book that can be devoured all at once with its mysterious plot, well developed characters and dreamy setting. Perfect for a day of reading at the beach. If you enjoy books like the Anna and the French Kiss series by Stephanie Perkins, add the Lakeview series to your beach bag.
I received an advanced ebook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Scream is book 3 in the Lakeview series.
This book follows Halle Henry's last year at Lakeview and how she tries to get her boyfriend, Alex, back to school after he was suspended for something he didn't do.
It took me a a little while to get through this one as at times I found Halle really annoying. Otherwise it wasn't too bad. Also, I loved the sneak peak of Silence at the end; I was really hoping that at some point Blakely tries to find her real father.
Thank you to Stacey Campbell for providing me with the arc.
I was given an ARC copy of “Scream” by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is no way changes my opinion of the book.
I fell in love with this series when I received copies of the first two books in this series via NetGalley; so when the author contacted me about reviewing book 3, I jumped at the chance! The characters are so likeable and the story line flows so well, it is quite easy to get immersed into the pages and not want to stop reading.
If you have not read the first two books in the Lakeview series, you will not be completely lost by starting with Scream. There is some reference to the previous books to help you understand certain things, but for the most part, this could be a stand-alone book, which is fine.
Scream centers around Halle, Blakely’s younger sister (you may remember her from the previous books), her boyfriend, Alex, and his twin sister, Izzy (who is also Halle’s roommate at the boarding school they attend). While on the ferry to get to Lakeview for the new school year, Alex leaves Halle and Izzy in search of something to snack on. While admiring the various vehicles on the ferry, he witnesses an altercation, and what he believes to be a murder of a drug dealer. Alex, scared for his own life and that he may have been seen, makes it back to where the girls are sitting, but keep what he witnessed to himself until later at school. He fills Halle and Izzy in on what he saw while in the lunch room, yet they laugh at him. However, he cannot quite shake the resemblance between Lakeview’s head chef and the man he saw on the ferry.
Unfortunately, their conversation was heard by a third party, and they will stop at nothing to make sure their cover is not blown before they can offload their stash of narcotics and flee from Canada. In order to do that, they have to find a way to quiet Alex. How else, other than to plant drugs on him and get him kicked out school.
Halle finally believes what Alex told her earlier, and will stop at nothing to find out who is behind this, and to bring him back to Lakeview. Otherwise, his chance of going to a prestigious college with a rowing scholarship is out of the question. But, just how can she do that, without getting framed as well?
Halle decides to turn to the one person who she thinks may be able to help her, Alex’s Lakeview roommate, Wyatt. With Wyatt, Halle and Izzy on the case, they just might be able to solve this mystery and clear Alex of false drug accusations so he can return to school. But, is the risk worth the consequences? With Alex being dead-set about Halle probing into this, will their relationship ever be the same again?
Another 5-star book by Stacey Campbell. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review Scream, and I look forward to reading Silence.
I received this book for an honest review through NetGalley.
First of all this is a YA book I'd recommend to everyone who likes this genre. The book is the 3rd book in a series but I read it as a standalone and I don't think you have to read the whole series to enjoy this book.
This book is such a quick and amazing read! The story is told in a few perspectives but it was easy to keep track of it. In my opinion it helped to get a better understanding of the plot and made the reading experience more enjoyable.
Scream is a story about Halle, who is in her last year of high school. She lives in a boarding school in Canada. She shares a room with Izzy, who happens to be her best friend and her boyfriend's twin sister.
The story starts with the three being on a ferry going to school after break. There, Alex (the boyfriend) witnesses a murder. He thinks the murderer is the school cook. The story revolves around finding out whether Alex is right and the school cook really murdered another man on the fary!
Once I picked up the book I couldn't stop reading. I just wanted to know what happens next and kept thinking about how the book will continue even after putting it down. The story is fast-paced and interesting. I loved the main characters and how their friendships developed throughout the story. I think the author did a great job conveying the main character's emotions and thoughts. It really helped to get to know the characters and to understand their actions.
So all in all I very much enjoyed this book and would love to read more about Halle and her friends!
This is the final book (so far?) and wraps up Halle’s senior year at Lakeview. Halle and Alex have been dating for a couple years now, and she and Izzy have stayed roommates through all their time at Lakeview. The winter term has ended and the new terms starts off on an odd note before the three even make it back to the campus. Alex swears he witnesses a strange interaction between two men on the ferry that no one else saw. Then back at school drugs are found in Alex’s belongings and he is expelled from Lakeview. Halle starts losing it. She is convinced his very weird roommate was behind it, but quickly discovers there’s a bigger plot at hand at Lakeview Academy after she relentlessly starts digging. She is determined to bring Alex back to campus. Along the way she enlists the help of the one person she knows she can trust who has the exact same goal that she does.
This is the most exciting of all the books! Campbell’s writing and craft has definitely improved from the first book. Even though this is a series, the books can be read as standalones and I highly recommend this third book to any and everyone.
The relationships in this book make up an interesting dynamic. They are different than they were in the second book, and the main focus is on Halle, Alex and their roommates Izzy and Wyatt. I was kind of sad to see the rest of the gang not pop up in the book, but they had already graduated.
Halle and Alex have such an incredibly sweet and playful romance. They support one another, but are also very wrapped up in one another. Halle struggles an incredible deal after Alex is expelled, but it also speaks to the depth of her loyalty and her refusal stubborness dedication to set things right.
Izzy and Halle have an interesting relationship being roommates and best friends, but also for the fact that Halle is dating Izzy’s twin. Izzy is very much part of the gossip mill at Lakeview, but she is Halle’s friend and refuses to believe the rumors flying around about her. Halle and Alex have to not cross a certain line that would impair Halle’s friendship with Izzy or cause issue between the siblings.
There is no love lost between Halle and Alex’s roommate, Wyatt. Until Halle thinks he’s the only one that can help her figure out who is framing Alex and why. They have to be careful that wind does not get back to Alex, or he’ll have both of their heads. After realizing the implications of the danger they are indeed in, he demands Halle stop her investigations.
Speaking of Wyatt, he starts hanging around with Halle’s Lakeview nemesis. You know, growing up we all had one. That person that we can’t stand and just rubs the entirely wrong way. Well, that’s Missy. They have had evil eyes for each other since grade 8, and now Missy thinks she is ruling supreme with her taunts and rumors after Alex is kicked out. She is definitely an annoying character, but there’s the thing: the entire time I was reading, no matter where she’d pop up, anytime she had dialogue I automatically heard it in one particular accent. She annoyed even me, and I thought she was quite stupid to just be popping off at the mouth like that, so anytime she spoke I heard it in my mind as a Jersey Shores dialect, which I then thought was kind of funny because I could picture it so easily.
My favorite scenes were the ones where Halle and Wyatt make riddle out the issues surrounding Alex’s expulsion and make their plans, especially when they sneak off campus through the woods the first time.
Wyatt and Halle bloom into fast friends after coming to a truce and consensus regarding their one mutual goal: getting Alex back on campus. Alex is the one person whom Wyatt can confide in, and this reason alone is what starts the basis of Wyatt and Halle’s friendship.
I’m not sure if there will be any more books in the series, given that both Henry girls have graduated Lakeview Academy and Halle’s plan is to attend St. Andrews in Europe, but the ending was enlightening for me about the potential for spin-off series and an entirely new relationship. ;)
Throughout this past year I’ve pushed myself to revisit some familiar genres and themes that I’d burned myself out on in years past. One of those genres was the younger side of the young adult which focuses on subjects and themes appropriate for middle schoolers and tweens. This genre was my main focus for the summer since I volunteer at our two local school libraries and like I’ve mentioned before, this is always the hardest age range to find books that kids want to read. After getting off to a bit of a slow start I’ve been pleasantly rewarded with some rather great series this past month. One such series is The Lakeview Series by Stacy R. Campbell and I must say that I absolutely fell in love with these books! Each one is filled with mystery, suspense and romance surrounding a century’s old school called Lakeview Academy.
For me, what really makes this series stand apart from the rest is that each story is linked together but with different characters taking the lead roles in several installments. I think this works really well for teen readers since they can be known to lose patience and interest rather quickly, especially with reading! This style of storytelling keeps each book fresh and new while also giving you the sense of returning to the familiar. Books 1 and 2.5 are told through Blakely’s point of view with books 2 and 3 being told through her younger sister, Halle’s point of view. The style of story is also different from book to book which really fascinated me and kept me on my toes! Book one centers around Blakely discovering she’s a long lost princess and book two centers around Halle and has much darker themes with a ghost/mystery type story. Then with book 2.5, which is really a great little novella, we return to Blakely’s world and she goes on a quest to find her biological dad and finally, book 3 returns us to Halle’s final year in high school which centers on a murder mystery and false accusations.
When I was growing up my absolute most favorite books were the Nancy Drew series, those were the best and I could just sit and read them over and over again and never get tired of them. There’s something about The Lakeview Series that very much reminds me of the Nancy Drew books, its apparent in all four of the books but especially in Whisper, book 2, which I’m sure has something to do with why it was my favorite book in the series :) These are fantastic books that I would absolutely recommend to YA/Tween readers and their parents and if your a school librarian please, please pick up this series for your bookshelves!
Thank you so much to author, Stacey R. Campbell and to CBB Book Promotions for inviting me to participate in The Lakeview Series Blog Tour and for providing me with a complimentary copy of these books in exchange for my honest review!
I love how the theme of every Lakeview novel keeps changing. In Hush, we had a lost princess theme, then in Whisper it was a ghost one, and now we have a murder investigation. Time flies pretty fast in Lakeview, and it is already Halle's last year here, after which she'll be heading over to university in Europe. She has a few months left with her boyfriend, Alex, who had made an appearance in Whisper. They are lovey-dovey and PDA, much to the annoyance of their respective roommates. Alex's roomie Wyatt has had a history of being involved in drugs, and when drugs are found in Alex's backpack, Halle first suspects Wyatt. But Alex had also been a witness to a murder, and he didn't not know he had been found. So, Halle starts investigating as to who may have planted the drugs in his bag, and it leads her to a drug deal. From there, it gets pretty dangerous as their futures and lives are at stake. Skirting around the rules, with Wyatt, she gets herself in deep. Even the police won't believe her, so she tries to get evidence herself. The ending, though, was pretty anti-climactic.
Now, the one that improved considerably in this book is the writing - it is the best in the series so far. This time around the element of mystery was created, character backstories were not the main point (thank heavens) and the romance was not so cliche. And the lack of any love triangles in this series has been a boon, although it needn't have been spelled out how Wyatt considered her only as a friend. Izzy was out and in, which was a shame. Alex was good, though he was inactive most of the time. North's appearance towards the end actually gave me pause; do I sense a new romantic pair? Maybe will have to wait till Bliss to find that out. Overall, 3.5 stars from me.
Received a free galley from Green Darner Press via Netgalley; this does not influence my opinions or review.
In this novel in the Lakeview series we get to see the relationship of Halle and Alex and how it is tested by false accusations towards Alex.
I have to say I agree with Alex all the way in this story. At first I was angry at his sister and Halle for not believing him. And than I felt so bad for Alex because once he was accused no one believed him in his family and that made him feel isolated and alone. Than I was with him all the way on the anger to Halle at her going off on her own into a dangerous situation and involving all around her. What on earth was she thinking. Alex was a great guy and what happened to him was really horrible and I am glad Halle was dogged in her pursuit for justice for him but not at the expense of the trust Alex had in her and the danger she put herself and others in because of it.
Halle was the hardest again for me. I couldn’t get into her character. I am not sure if it is her defiance of others, her thinking that she is the only one who knows and can do anything, her not total trust in those she says she cares for and not trusting their opinions or just her overall character but for me she is off. She overall is a good character but she is off for me.
Izzy cracked me up and Alex’s roommate was great as well. He teaches Halle that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that just because someone says something doesn’t always make it true. He also teaches her that what you see before you isn’t as it always appears for there may be another side to it. Too bad she didn’t give that benefit to Alex when he asked for it.
The story was fascinating and keeps you dangling to find the answers and get it all tied up. In the end you are left with a nugget and thinking hmmm North and Halle possibly a good match???
This is a story of trust and a quest for trust and justice no matter the cost. The cost can be friendship, faith in you from others and the loss of trust as well. The story of Alex and Halle and how she goes against him to help clear him even if it puts her in danger. A intriguing tale that has you smile and laugh. At times want to pull your hair out from Halle’s antics but in the end glad for Alex and intrigued at what is coming ahead for these characters. A great book and a wonderful series to boot.
I’m a fan. I’ve posted a few reviews of Stacey R. Campbell’s other books Whisper and Silence and loved both. Campbell’s newest book “Scream” is coming out July 20th and you should definitely pick up a copy. Yet again, Campbell has drawn me in to an amazing story.
This book in the series follows Halle, now a senior in school, as she finds herself in trouble with murderers, drug dealers, and an angry boyfriend. Halle is such a lovable character that you have to cheer her on. Even when she is making bad decisions you hold out hope that she is going to come out on top. We also get a little bit of Blakely and Max from the first book! And some of our favorite supporting characters thrown in as well.
Campbell is definitely one of my favorite authors and every book she writes gets better and better. “Scream” is the perfect book for a quiet night and will give you some excitement in the process. If you are wanting great writing, characters you will fall in love with, and a storyline that keeps you turning pages until the very end, then pick up “Scream” on July 20th. Another 5 stars for Campbell!
I really love this series. One thing that I particularly love is that each book is very much self contained. There are characters that are in every book but the protagonist changes between them.
This particular book focuses on Halle. Getting embroiled in a mystery innocently then pursuing it when her boyfriend gets punished for something he didn't do. I really enjoy her almost black and white sense of right and wrong. Being willing to defend Alex through everything even when it gets scary and dangerous, brave but kind of stupid.
Alex and Halle's relationship isn't very a mature relationship, but I feel it's not supposed to be. After all it's their first relationship, it isn't perfect but it doesn't have to be and that makes it very fitting.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my free and honest review. I also happen to be part of the Street Team for this book so I will be shamelessly promoting it as the release date nears.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it was that, despite my best efforts, I just couldn't make myself like Halle. She drove me nuts. Nothing about her character was interesting to me. I wanted to strangle her half the time. It is really hard to enjoy a book when you can't get behind the main character. The book just felt like it was trying to force another scary, thrilling adventure at the school. I'm sorry, but there just can't be dangerous adventures over and over again at the same school, unless that school is Hogwarts. If it was a school for young spies or secret agents in training, then the reoccurrences would be believable. I guess I just couldn't get behind this book. I am definitely done with this series, even if the author isn't.
ARC copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ultimately I think I just fell outside this books target demographic. I got through it quickly, the voice was engaging and the pacing was ok. I just didn't really connect with Halle who I found annoying. I felt a lot of her decisions were needlessly foolish and it stopped the willing suspension of disbelief which in turn meant that I found the plot more than a bit unlikely. That said as I was reading it I was aware that many of my reactions were due to personal taste. The book is well written, just not really for me. I have no doubt that others will love it.
Stacey R. Campbell is one of my favourite authors, and I loved the first two books in the series, so it was no surprise that I loved this one as well, and can't wait for the next one.
I like the story, the characters and the writing. Halle gets into the middle of a mystery and tries to solve it, so her boyfriend (who was suspended unfairly) can come back to school and graduate with the class.
I found the book very well written. It flows nicely and doesn't have any of the abrupt changes that I've found in many books lately. It's amusing, entertaining and a joy to read.
I can't stress enough how hooked I am on this series. Each book is unbelievably hard to put down. You will find yourself quickly drawn in and connected to all the characters in the book. Each book could easily be read as a stand alone so if this is your first in the Lakeview series you will be fine as each book carries it's own story line but ties in the familiar characters and gives you detail to them so you won't get confused. I can't wait until the next book is released!!
What a refreshing book, it is rare to read a YA book where there isn't at least one character that you want to shake! I love the determination of Halle, and her belief that she could get Alex back in school. The story was very believable and the actions of the main characters seemed realistic, although as a mother I would be more grey than I am now if my child was like Halle. This book should be on your summer reading list, so thankful to have the ARC to read.
Stacey R. Campbell has created a unique story that consists of characters that readers will want to root for and a plot that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
This is my favorite Lakeview Novel yet. I received an ARC copy of Scream from NetGalley in exchange for a review and I have to say I can't wait for Silence. Having gone to a boarding school I can completely relate to these books.I love this Author!!!
This was my favorite book of the series so far. I loved that it was less about the love story of the characters, and more about proving the innocence of Alex. It was highly entertaining and I adored it!
This Lakeview Novel might be my favorite. I find Halle so easy to write. I hope you enjoy this fast moving adventure as much as I do. Cheers all. Happy Reading!
I was iffy on reading this book because it wasn't the first book in the series. I figured that I would be lost plot wise since there would be references to what had happened in past books. Fortunately, I was able to follow the story line without wondering too much about what previously happened. Short recaps were given to summarize certain aspects of the past which flowed nicely into the story line. This book is from the third person point of view which made it confusing since after a couple of paragraphs someone else would be talking or thinking. The book wasn't that long which made it easier to deal with the third person point of view. Not a lot of books I have read have been in third person so it took a while to get used to.
The book begins with Halle, her boyfriend Alex, and his sister and her best friend Izzy on a ferry en route to Lakeview Academy. Alex decides to leave the girls to gossip and goes in search of snacks before deciding to admire the cars on the ferry. He realizes he isn't alone and hides behind a car when two men up ahead start arguing. The conversation gets heated and Alex realizes he should leave and slowly begins to slowly back away. He hears a gunshot and then watches from underneath a car as one of the men tosses another over the railing and into the water. Filled with shock and terror, Alex quickly makes his way back to his girlfriend and sister and keeps what he witnessed to himself. It isn't until they both arrive back at Lakeview that Alex notices that the school's chef looks familiar. He resembles the man that shot and threw the guy into the water.
Noticing her boyfriend's unusually quiet and stressed behavior, Halle inquires about it and Alex fills Halle and Izzy in on what he saw, thinking that no one was in hearing range of their conversation. Unfortunately, someone hears of his confession and goes out of their way to plant drugs in his backpack so he gets expelled from the school. Lost without her boyfriend, Halle decides to prove Alex's innocence since she knows he would never resort to messing with drugs. She befriends Alex's roommate Wyatt and the two of them team up to dig for clues and conduct research to find out who planted the drugs so Alex can come back to Lakeview with a clean record.
I enjoyed the novel and want to read the previous ones in the series and also the sequel. One thing that did annoy me was how rude and dependent Halle was. Her and Wyatt didn't get along at first and she always had something snarky to say about him. She acts this way to another girl as well, and I was left wondering how she had friends. Then I realized that the only friends she interacted with in the book were Izzy and Alex, and then eventually Wyatt. Izzy was aloof for most of the novel and high strung when it came to gossiping and wanting to find the perfect boyfriend. Besides those two character's personalities, I concentrated on the story line which grasped my attention and left me wanting to know what happened after.
I was given an ARC of this novel by NetGalley in exchange for a review.

After having read this book accidentally earlier, I re-read it today and found myself enjoying it just as much the second time round.
I did like seeing the relationship between Alex and Halle. Even though they were very young, I still thought they had some really sweet moments during this book. There was quite a bit of action going on here, but it was still good to be able to see the characters interacting with each other.
This book was really easy to read. It was short, but I felt it was well-written. Halle did irritate me a little during this... I thought that she was putting herself in unnecessary danger. I did enjoy reading about the friendship she formed with Wyatt, though. I found myself quite liking Wyatt as a character, despite what his first appearance seemed to suggest.
Although there was quite a bit of tension in this book, there wasn't much mystery. It was clear from the start who the bad guys were... but I did think the author did a good job of showing how Halle put everything together to come to that conclusion.
I liked seeing Halle and Blakeley interacting and I would have liked to see more of them having a nice, sisterly relationship. I also would have liked to see more of Izzy and Alex and their relationship. There were times it felt like Halle was more upset about Alex than Izzy was... though I suppose Izzy was caught up in the new relationship she was in.
There weren't too many minor characters in this book, which was good in a way, since a lot of characters can be confusing. However, apart from Missy, there didn't seem to be a lot of other students around. I would have liked to see some more everyday interactions with other students at the school.
I liked seeing the use of text messages, since I felt it worked with the characters. I really didn't like Mr. Davies, I have to say... even if there was some reference to him actually being a good man.
This book was really quick and easy to read. At some point in the future, I'd like to read Hush. And it would also be good to see more books in this series.
Scream, the 3rd book in the Lakeview series, features Halle, finally as a main character. Halle’s boyfriend Alex witnesses a murder and believes the killer might be their school cook. Halle and her roommate Izzy, Alex’s sister, laugh off his suspicions and don’t believe him. But then things start to happen to Alex, ultimately resulting in his expulsion from school for possessing drugs. Halle will risk everything to uncover the truth and clear his name.
Halle is now 17-years-old and has matured into her character. Her romance with long-time love/crush Alex is very sweet and I wished we could have seen more of it before he got kicked out of Lakeview. Halle is brave, resourceful and sometimes runs foolhardy into danger while working on proving her boyfriend’s innocence.
Alex wasn’t featured in this book too much but he seemed like a loving, sweet boyfriend to Halle and a good brother to Izzy. He was very loyal to his friends and school. He also copes rather well for everything that had happened to him and everyone thinking he had drugs on campus.
Wyatt was the mysterious character with a past. After Alex is forced to leave school, he’s the only person who will help Halle clear his name. Their scenes were often comical and often charged making me believe he could be a potential love interest.
This book was a very fast read as well and seemed again more mystery than romance. It also had some very great scenes with Blakely, Max, and North all making appearances.
I’ve read the first two books of the Lakeview series and jumped right on it when I saw the third was up for review. Sadly, this just wasn’t that great for me. I found the story to feel very “bare bones”. Halle didn’t feel real and the relationships felt very stilted. The whole thing felt very rushed. Quite disappointing since I LOVED the first. Maybe I’ve just aged out of the series.
I was hoping by the title of this book it was very scary and I great read. I think the book was a 3 for sure. I did not know it was book 3 in a series but I was a little lost through the book. I would not read any more in this series. I did not relate to the character of Halle and I just thought the cover was better than the book. * I received this book in exchange for an honest review*
