2 stars. I really thought during the first half that this was going to be a 4 star. Unfortunately, the last half felt rushed. Some of the revelations were just thrown at you with no deeper explanation. There is a lot of inner dialogue.

There is NO spice in this book. The one moment where there could’ve been spice, it was a fade to black. Ugh. I think there were a few kisses.
The book starts where h is drugged and she’s sold into some type of smex trafficking ring. BY HER MATE/HUSBAND. 😱 OM/husband is an alpha. OM is gloating to h that he used her all these years for the stuff she inherited from her dad. h’s dad was a very respected war general. OM admits that he played a part in her dad's death. OM then announced he had divorced her, and now she’s going to be sold.
h is still drugged when she is brought into a room full of powerful people. A bunch of sickos bid, but ultimately H wins the bid. We know from his POV, he knows h from 6 years earlier. He is there investigating the smex ring and a bunch of his pack is there undercover. H takes h back to his pack. h almost dies from the drugs, but instead her wolf comes out (she has always been wolf-less) Her wolf is massive. (I’m really not sure what the point is of her having a massive wolf because she never really does anything with it)
Naturally, h doesn’t trust H or his pack but he talks h into “marrying” him for protection. It is clear from H’s POV that he has STRONG feelings for h, but there is something he is not telling her. H is also an Alpha. He’s related to the royal Alpha. 🤷♀️ His mom is a big part of his life. Thankfully, she is a good character. There is this OW in the pack who is a nasty person, but H has no interest in her.
H gives h a wedding ring, and we know from his POV, he’s been waiting 3 years to *finally* give it to h. Wut?
For the majority of the book, h is learning to trust H while they are both gathering evidence to bring down OM.
They can’t figure out who is feeding info to OM. He always seems to be one step ahead (umm, how about OW since she’s always so nasty. Wouldn’t that be YOUR first guess?)
Big plot spoiler
We find out H used to be mated. He killed his mate. Why? Because he found out his mate was responsible for the deaths of a lot of wolves. I guess she was a serial killer or helping the serial killer (I wasn’t too sure which) but he had to kill her to stop her. He was led into an ambush and stabbed with silver. He went into the water. At this point, he decided to quit fighting, and he wanted death. As his body went down the river, h jumped in and saved him. I think he felt the *fated mate* bond snap in place with h. After he healed, he went to get h and marry her, but he found out she had just married OM.
That’s all you find out about the past. The plot never elaborates further on their past. It is so quickly skimmed over that I went back a few pages to reread. I thought I had missed something. From this moment on, everything is just quickly thrown at you, then it’s wrapped up fast.
OM is brought before the council in the final showdown and he is quickly stopped and arrested. h finally says what she wants to say to him 😂
Later, (like 2 paragraphs) h is randomly kidnapped, then wakes up drugged- with OM there. He escaped. BUT before anything really happens, H busted down the door, and h is saved. There was no buildup, nothing. Everything was quickly told to us.
h realizes at the end she loves H.
We then have the real wedding and the after-party. H and h are talking about kids, then h goes “I don’t want any kids”
Then it skips to where h’s pregnant and due any day. h and the mother are laughing about the joke they played on H, telling him she didn’t want kids. 🙄🙄 (I was confused)
Then h’s water breaks……..and it’s the end.

The author had a decent first half. I don’t know what happened to the last half? That was thrown together.
