Portia Fielding hasn’t given up her quest to free Devon Harbury from his unjust incarceration, and Inspector James Burke hasn’t given up his self-imposed task of taking care of Portia. But now they have a plan, one that will include local antiquarian Charlotte Howell as their accomplice.
Working toward their goal distracts them from the activities at Harbury’s Dower House where two scientists plan on testing their gaseous vapors. The result should be an orgy of mammoth proportions and a huge increase in their bank balance. After all, auctioning off twin virgins to a set of London aristocrats is guaranteed to provide almost unlimited amounts of guineas.
On the surface, everything looks as if it will work as predicted. But only one event comes to pass. The other turns into a disastrous night of inhuman savagery. A night that would seem tailor-made for the perverted tastes of Lord Randall Harbury…
I'm really rather boring... Honestly. I live a pretty hum-drum life as a wife and mother. I shop at the local supermarket and use coupons now and again. See? Boring stuff.
I live in Virginia now, so I am learning all kinds of new things - such as being able to buy beer and wine along with bread and toothpaste. Wow!
Having been born and raised in England, I do possess a well-developed feel for the English countryside. Comes in handy for those Regency tales. Even though I was transplanted over to the US side of the Atlantic, I still have ties to all things Brit. I bake sausage rolls and make Christmas pudding. You can take the girl out of England, but not England out of the girl, I guess.
I'm not sure anyone can write really well unless they read. A lot. I read anything and everything these days. And mostly on my couch with a book on my knees. Yes, the technology is out there for electronic versions, but there's not much to compare with a shiny new hardcover from a favorite author.
So, these guys are alchemists. And the lord of the house is certifiable had there been anyone around to hand him that certificate, finally. He needs it sorely. He's also not just not right in his head but pretty much all around except in some departments. The lady of the house likes her guys hot and crazy and cold and... well, the lord does like his ladies as well. Much too much, especially when they are trying to use their chem stims, since, you know, they are alchemists. Hmmm... I probably have just discovered another genre I should stay away.
Ok. Sahara Kelly is going to blow your mind with this third installment of the Asylum for the Mechanically Insane. This one is more twisted, more horrific, more perverted (thus the name) and crazy insane!
Portia and the good Inspector Burke are still on the case and they are getting closer to solving some "issues" within the house. Portia moves forward in her quest to rescue Devon Harbury (heir of the estate) and Inspector Burke is right by her side.
The staff of the house still have no idea what evil lurks right below them in the "laboratories" but they know something is off. A couple of the scientists lure a lady of pleasure to help them gain riches beyond belief, and the Lord and Lady of the manor are out to cause all kinds of trouble.
The author has taken us deeper into what hides in the country manors of old. Makes you wonder how close she is to the truth.
This is book 3 of the Asylum for the Mechanically Insane. You MUST read this series in order. It is a serial and builds upon the previous books.
Dr. Granville and Viscount Somerly, his cousin, have created the gas that Lady Harbury uses to stay young. They have decided that they need money for themselves so they decide to set up a brothel and use the gas to enhance the sexual experiences of those frequenting this establishment. They make their arrangements but get more than they bargained for when they go into business.
Portia and Inspector Burke continue their investigations into the disappearances and deaths occurring at Harbury Hall. Portia has also told the inspector about the prisoners. In the course of her cleaning duties she has discovered old maps of Harbury Hall and comes up with what she believes is a viable plan to rescue the prisoners, especially the one with whom she has the strong connection. In order to avoid detection they need the services of Mrs. Howell, an antiquarian and amateur archeologist.
I like the heroes and heroines here. Mrs. Howell is interesting and brings a new way of looking at things to the story. Granville and Somerly are cads and bounders. A new doctor is introduced who may be able to handle Lord Harbury as he descends more into madness. Lady Harbury may be joining her husband on his journey to madness.
Portia does work on her plan to free the prisoners but it is barely mentioned. At the end things happen that did not make sense so I had to go back to see what I missed. Portia and her plan were very easy to overlook. Missing that causes confusion.
I am looking forward to book 4 which is not out yet. Ugh!!!!!!
