Twist of Fate is book 8 in by Sally Rigby’s Detective Sebastian Clifford series about a private investigator, and his business partner, Birdie, who investigate crimes in Leicestershire.
In this book, Seb and Birdie, with Seb’s daughter, Keira, assisting, are hired to help the police investigate the thefts of high end art pieces.
Although Twist of Fate is the eighth book in the series it is easily read as a standalone novel.
While the main characters are private investigators, I would call this a police procedural. Sometimes a procedural can feel slow, but I didn’t feel that at any point in this book.
I enjoyed the fact that this mystery did not involve a murder, and yet the investigation still felt dangerous, and like the stakes were high. It was a nice change.
The other thing I really enjoyed was the relationships between the characters. They felt like real people, with real problems and personalities. You could tell they cared for each other, but still had conflicts to resolve in their personal lives.
I really enjoyed Twist of Fate, as I said, it was a nice change from murder but still kept my attention. I liked the characters and how they worked together, as well as the glimpses given into their personal lives. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys traditional mysteries.

Twist of Fate by Sally Rigby is a Sebastian Clifford novel. Seb and his partner, Birdie, have been hired by the police department to investigate a string of high-end robberies. All lost specific items and left much behind. All had high-end security systems, different brands, different vendors. It is a complicated investigation, complicated further by high tech signal jammers, custom made, and well-hidden. It takes a couple of days before they figure that out but that was the first, important step in solving these crimes. The investigators were glad that they had the police working with them, as that opened doors. Seb’s twenty-year-old daughter, Keira, worked with them as a researcher and had a definite knack for searching social media. This time she might have gotten in too deep.
First of this series I’ve read and I really enjoyed it. I love procedurals and this fit the bill. Seb is the son of a viscount and uses that card only when necessary. Digging for clues and any connections, the pair of detectives and Sebastian’s daughter, Keira, go on the hunt for the thieves. Meanwhile, Keira reunites with an old school friend, possibly putting her in danger.
This is another intriguing book by Sally Rigby, with a plot filled with twists and turns, as Birdie reunites with her old team to assist in the solving of the crimes. This is a well thought out British mystery.

Twist of Fate by Sally Rigby is a highly recommended investigative mystery and the eight novel featuring detective, now private investigator, Sebastian (Seb) Clifford.
Private investigators Sebastian Clifford and Lucinda 'Birdie' Bird are asked by the police, who are short handed, to assist Twiggy, Birdie's former partner, in the investigation of a series of thefts targeting Leicestershire's wealthiest estates. The thieves are not taking everything. They are taking very specific items, leaving other, more valuable antiques and paintings in place. The estates all have security systems and the thieves seem to have inside knowledge. Seb's daughter Keira is back from the university for the summer so she is available to help with research. Keira also reconnects with an old friend.
These are well written mysteries where the page count is low so the pace moves quickly. As information comes in, clues are uncovered, potential suspects identified, and clues are logically followed up on. There is a big break in the case that helps point the investigation in the right direction. Even though this is the eight book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone novel. All the characters have very different personalities and investigative styles. Birdie brings the humor to the plot.
The plot has the feeling of a cozy mystery. Also, due to the limited page count, some details that would have made the plot more believable are often left out or glossed over. Personally, I have to admit I prefer Rigby's Cornwall Murder Mystery series over the Sebastian Clifford series. Sometimes Birdie gets on my nerves. In spite of that this is a satisfying mystery and fans will love it.

Hurrah !! Another superb story featuring my favourite series by this author. I checked and it's been over a year since I last encountered the best characters she writes and I had sorely missed them !
This one had an element of sadness I'd been expecting at some point but no spoilers here, though it did leave me decidedly sniffy here. It was just such a pleasure to spend a few days with Sebastian and Birdie once again as I have travelled their journey together from day one. Keira is becoming another super addition as well. It was tough to read of Elsa being an aged dog and it shows how far we've all come as she was younger too when the series first began about five years ago now.
I see she also set it in this year...cos' I'm anal like that and try and work out the year from her chapter headings. I looked up paintings by Edward Hopper and I really like those. So I got some educating in this one as well !
I guessed wrong as per usual as to where the story was going....hehehe....and something I did make a note of is I only just really realised is how Birdie is balancing working with 2 very different colleagues with 2 VERY differing "issues" with memory.....total polar opposites. Must be tricky for the poor girl navigating how best to deal with each of them at times. One character in particular here was soooooo dismissive of her as well which had me bristling !! However, he was a rude, entitled so-and-so and it was to be expected, I guess.
Seb had his own problems here, too, dealing with Keira and coming up against her somewhat and I found that interesting as well.
Take my word for it, this is a terrific series and never disappoints and I have given every one so far 5* apart from the prequel novella and I only dropped that to 4* due to its brevity, so that tells you all you need to know.
The author kindly sent me an advanced copy but I'm never swayed in any fashion by this and any mistakes I spotted I always pass onto her directly because I'm polite like that !!

Their relationship and rapport continue to be one of the highlights of the series. There is a warmth, wit, and authenticity to their dynamic that feels reminiscent of classic detective pairings such as Holmes and Watson. No matter how complex the investigation becomes, Seb and Birdie ground the story with their humanity, humour, and unwavering loyalty.
The supporting cast continues to shine as well. Keira and Twiggy have grown into increasingly important and engaging characters, adding extra depth to the series, while Sarge's appearance was a welcome bonus. It's a testament to Rigby's writing that every character feels fully realised and contributes meaningfully to the story.

Three and a half stars.
Sebastian Clifford and his partner Lucinda 'Birdie' Bird are called in by the local police to assist with a series of robberies which are confounding the detectives. Each household had a (different) state of the art security system and CCTV, yet none of the alarms were tripped. The thieves entered the houses when the owners were known to be away from home and only stole selected items, sometimes leaving more valuable pieces behind. Short of an invisibility pill, they can't work how the thieves managed it.
Obvious things like security systems, staff, suppliers etc have all been cross-checked and no similarities are emerging. Even worse, as they probe deeper it seems that several of the victims had hosted events at their homes in the weeks preceding the robberies, potentially widening the pool of suspects.
Meanwhile, Seb's daughter Keira is back from university, distraught because her boyfriend has ditched their travel plans for some work experience. Then she discovers an old school friend has had a social media makeover and is now an influencer - one who attended at least one of the events preceding the robbery. But is her gentle questioning about to get her in too deep?
I enjoyed this, it is only the second book I have read in the series but it is an enjoyable detective story of the cosy variety. Overall, a pleasant mystery that had enough red herrings and suspects to keep me guessing.

Sebastian Clifford and his partner Lucinda 'Birdie' Bird are called in by the local police to assist with a series of robberies which are confounding the detectives. Each household had a (different) state of the art security system and CCTV, yet none of the alarms were tripped. The thieves entered the houses when the owners were known to be away from home and only stole selected items, sometimes leaving more valuable pieces behind. Short of an invisibility pill, they can't work how the thieves managed it.
Obvious things like security systems, staff, suppliers etc have all been cross-checked and no similarities are emerging. Even worse, as they probe deeper it seems that several of the victims had hosted events at their homes in the weeks preceding the robberies, potentially widening the pool of suspects.
Meanwhile, Seb's daughter Keira is back from university, distraught because her boyfriend has ditched their travel plans for some work experience. Then she discovers an old school friend has had a social media makeover and is now an influencer - one who attended at least one of the events preceding the robbery. But is her gentle questioning about to get her in too deep?
I enjoyed this, it is only the second book I have read in the series but it is an enjoyable detective story of the cosy variety. This is on me 🫣. When I picked up Twist of Fate by Sally Rigby, I went into it blind and didn’t realize it revolved around a burglary investigation. That’s not really my preferred type of plot, but that’s on me, not the book.
Sally Rigby is a very good writer and really excels at character development. Sebastian Clifford and Birdie are both incredibly likeable and engaging, and you genuinely want them to succeed. 😊 Keira, Sebastian’s long-lost daughter, also plays an important role in the investigation, and I really enjoyed her character.
And then there are the dogs. 🐕 Bonnie and Elsa were such a great bonus for someone who completely loses it every time they see a dog. 😂🫣
The story flows well, there’s plenty of humour, and if you enjoy procedural detective fiction where the investigation unfolds through interviews, following leads, and gradually uncovering clues, you’ll feel right at home with this one. I can absolutely see why fans of the Sebastian Clifford series enjoy these books so much.
For me, the plot simply wasn’t my cup of tea, but that doesn’t take away from the book’s strengths. 😊 I just need to start reading the synopsis before I request books instead of choosing them just because they have a pretty cover. 😂🫣

Twist of Fate by Sally Rigby is the eighth book in the Detective Sebastian Clifford series. Seb and his partner, Birdie, are collaborating with the police department on this case. Interestingly, there is no murder to investigate, but rather high-end robberies. Police are baffled as to how the intruders got into the homes as they all had sophisticated security systems.
Seb’s daughter, Keira, is home for the summer break and she helps them investigate the homeowners and suspects. Unfortunately, one of them is an old schoolmate with whom she has recently reconnected, even though she is not aware that Zara is a suspect as Seb and Birdie shield her.
The characters have great relationships, and they really draw you into the story, even grumpy Sergeant Weston, Birdie’s former boss. My only criticism of this story is Seb not wanting Kiera to attend the high tea at the Castles’ house where they will display priceless porcelain. He is concerned that something will happen during the event and wants to protect her, although nothing dangerous has occurred in the events in the past.

This series just keeps getting better.
One of the things I love most about these books is the wonderful cast of characters. Sebastian, Birdie, Keira, and the rest feel like real people, and after several books I genuinely look forward to spending time with them again. The village setting is equally charming, capturing everything I enjoy about English cozy mysteries while still delivering engaging investigations.
This installment stands out because of the character development. It was rewarding to see Sebastian facing not only a challenging case but also the personal conflict of protecting his daughter while allowing her to make her own choices. The emotional stakes made the mystery feel even more compelling.
The storyline itself is excellent. The investigation into the thefts of valuable antiques unfolds at just the right pace, with plenty of twists and growing tension as the connections become clear. I was completely invested from beginning to end.
More than anything, this series has become a place I love to visit. The characters are so warm and believable that I often find myself thinking I'd happily know them in real life, and I honestly feel like I'd fit right in with this community.
If you enjoy well-written village mysteries with memorable characters, an engaging plot, and a touch of heart, this series is an absolute delight.

A series of art thefts targeting high profile - and very wealthy - people is brought to the attention of Seb Clifford and his business partner Birdie. Asked by the police to investigate, but as quietly as possible, Seb and Birdie begin searching for links between the seemingly unrelated victims...when the link they're looking for just happens to strike close to home.
I don't really know what this is meant to be - I came into it expecting a fairly serious crime book but it honestly reads more like a cozy. I've not read any books in this series before and for the first couple of chapters I very much felt like an outsider, although that feeling did fade as I went through the chapters.

If I see a book entitled “Twist of Fate”, I’m gonna read it. Maybe it’s my childhood crush on Olivia Newton-John in the 80s. You add to that that the book is written by Sally Rigby, and definitely in.
I first came across author Sally Rigby with another series she writes. In both cases, I have joined her in a series in process. In both cases, she makes it so easy to join in.
I love Ms. Rigby’s writing. She writes fun mysteries that have heart but are also series in nature. These are not cozies. But her style allows her books to be fun.
You add to that the depth of her characters. In this case, we have a father and daughter relationship that is involved in the investigation. You FEEL what the characters feel. Sally Rigby finds a way to draw you into the emotion. You become a participant, rather than a casual observer just reading about it.
Did I mention that the mysteries are good? Really good. You can’t go wrong with any of her series work.

Keira is home from Uni but out of sorts, due to her boyfriend cancelling their summer holiday plans, in favour of a job offer overseas. She tried to put a brave face on and helps with the research elements of the investigation. She eventually meets an old school friend and they start hanging out.
The investigation is plodding along but with no leads that link them together, yet. As the clues mount up, Seb, Birdie and Twiggy manage to piece it all together but have to bide their time, so they can catch them in the act. A surveillance operation produced a worrying photo of an unlikely accomplice and Seb tries, unsuccessfully, to exclude Keira from attending an event. What happens next, shows a different side to a normally calm Seb...

What? No murders!!! That’s okay - plenty of mystery and a puzzling case to solve. Rich people are being robbed of art and other precious objects. But what is strange, in each case the owners were not robbed of their most valuable items. Are specific pieces being targeted? Also inexplicable, none of the security systems sounded an alert. Each system was state of the art, but from different companies and different installers.
Seb’s daughter Keira becomes involved because of her relationship with Zariah (Sara Hunt) - an influencer and past friend - who had been to at least a couple of the homes. Birdie’s old partner from the police force is the active investigator but Birdie and Seb are brought in because of the police force’s manpower shortage.
What adds to the enjoyment of all Sally Rigby novels is the development of the main characters’ personal lives. It makes them more like real people. She does this without focusing more on side stories than on the main plot - a problem I see with a few other authors.

I have read several installments of the Cornwall Murder Mystery Series and have enjoyed each. This is my first encounter with Private Investigators Sebastian Clifford and Lucinda Bird and I will definitely look forward and back for other installments in this series.
The story held my attention as did the characters and dialogue. Specifically targeted burglaries, well planned and with no clues, the investigation is an interesting procedural with some emotional ballistics thrown in along with some familial distractions. Loads of technical information and research, while not overly distracting, added to the complexity of the crimes and the difficulties in pinning down the timeline and potential perpetrators. Add in a sweet, newly adopted dog and I was just flipping the pages to see how all this was going to come together.
A well thought out, fast and enjoyable read and another round of applause for Sally Rigby. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for a copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Seb and Birdie are without a doubt two of my favourite characters in crime fiction today. Their relationship and their rapport is quaint and illuminating and every bit as fascinating as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. They anchor a reality to whatever plot they find themselves in.
Twiggy and Keira are growing in stature as well as the series progresses and 'Sarge' makes a welcome cameo appearance.
In five short years Sally Rigby has turned sleepy-Market Harborough and its surrounding villages into the crime capital of the Midlands. The crimes in these novels are never quite what one expects them to be - they are intricate, ingenious and intellectually astute.
Mixing the classic elements of high end fine art and ceramics with high-tech engineering brings class and originality to the plot which after a joyous slow burn opening gathers a breathless momentum as it reaches the denouement.

I understood this to be a heist mystery where the profile would be on a series of robberies of priceless artefacts from local houses. The focus instead was on personal relationships of the lead characters more than catch8ng the thieves. This is illustrated by the apprehension of two villains at the end was covered in a couple of sentences or so, with little or no detail on the actual arrest when they were caught in the act. There was also a flaw in the plot, where the attention at the end was to ensure the lead detectives daughter was safe, when she was not really involved, just as a potential ally for one of the thieves. Instead the thieves would be much more interested in a successful robbery rather than being bothered with a friend of the girl who planted the jamming device to block the security system the day before. Still despite not being convinced by the plot, the book is readable and those who enjoy the series it stands in will enjoy this.

Once again Sally Rigby has delivered a quick, entertaining read. I really do need to go back and read the rest of the series.
Multi-million dollar items are being stolen from homes. Despite security systems being in place these items aren't noticed to be gone until the families return home. Their alarms aren't being triggered.
Ok, how it's happening is moderately obvious but it's not until like 2/3rds of the way thru the book did I know for sure who the baddie was. You expect it to be one person because they are sketchy as heck. Nope.
One bit at the end was super sad and I had to take a few minutes before going back in to finish the last few pages. It was not wholly unexpected but definitely unappreciated.

This is #8 in the Detective Sebastian Clifford series but can easily be read as a standalone. I love the series and this instalment didn’t disappoint.

Burglars have begun targeting wealthy local homeowners but they seem to bypass sophisticated alarm systems and leave no clues behind. Seb's daughter Kiera is home for the holidays, and working for her dad when she isn't catching up with old friends and enjoying her downtime. As they gradually close in on those responsible a link to Kiera is discovered. Sebastian is immediately on high alert but, with the danger far closer than any of them realised, that might not be enough!

I find myself jumping in at book 8 in this series but it was just fine as a standalone and also a temptation for me to look for the earlier books.
Private investigators Sebastian Clifford and Birdie Bird are asked to assist the local police when a series of thefts from local wealthy estates begin to occur. Seb and Birdie dig deep and find a possible solution which involves setting a trap. Unfortunately Seb's daughter Kiera happens to be friends with one of the thieves and is in a dangerous situation.
This was a good read. The characters were likeable and worked well together. There was a lot of humour and the mystery was very interesting, especially the intensive planning and clever methods used by the thieves. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a good police procedural.

Ooh! I’ve never read one like this!
This story included a unique mystery that instantly intrigued me. It was more than just a “who, what and where” puzzle, which added to its intrigue. I was constantly guessing the solution, only to find myself changing my mind more than once. I still didn't get it right, and I love it when that happens.
The characters were definitely a huge part of why I enjoyed this book so much. The mix of personalities and the relationships between them brought so much heart and humor to the story. I never lost interest for a second.
Going in, I didn’t realize this was part of a series. And honestly? This stood on its own so well I never once felt lost. I'll definitely be going back to read the earlier books though. I need to know how it all began!

I enjoy this series but felt the last couple were getting a bit stale, so it was great that the dynamic duo of Sebastian Clifford and Lucinda Birdie Bird are back to their best in this one. They are called in to Birdie's former police team to help investigate some high value art thefts, assisting Sarge and Twiggy. Keira is home from university and moping because her boyfriend has gone to work abroad for the summer instead of their planned trip around Europe together, so she is also drawn in, alongside an old school friend. They quickly establish links between some of the burglaries and are able to predict where the thieves will strike next. It's a good mystery which moves along at a steady pace, with revelations and surprises along the way.

Twist of Fate is the 8th book in the Sebastian Clifford series, but the first I have read. I did occasionally feel I was missing a bit of the back story, but it didn’t significantly impact my enjoyment of the book.
