Daisy Gumm Majesty, Pasadena's spiritualist-medium to folks with more money than sense, is talked into playing the role of mean Katisha in her church's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, The Mikado.
As rehearsals progress and Daisy falls into her role, the producer's wife experiences a mysterious decline in health, a cast member claims someone is trying to kill her, and the husband of another cast-member is murdered.
Knowing Detective Sam Rotondo has his hands full, Daisy turns her attention to the murder, convinced Gloria Lippincott did her husband in. But no matter how Daisy twists and turns the facts, Gloria's alibi is rock-solid. Then Daisy discovers the Silver Ghost.
It is in the 20's and Daisy is still recovering from Billy's death. Mrs. Pinkerton is given a party to thank Daisy and Sam for solving the case of KKK clan that were harassing her. Harold and friends convince Daisy should played Katisha in their operetta which is to be held at her church. One of the players is kill in a hit and run; another actor is a suspect in the accident. Sam is assign to the case and Daisy is helping him. They need to find answers so all the actors are not murder. This one one of relaxing series.
It was a nice break in the series to have the main characters doing things outside of their regular lives. This made them seem more human and definitely increased their level of interest. The ending was spectacular
This installment starts off with a party primarily to celebrate Daisy and Sam’s actions in the previous book. If you’ve not read that story it’s ok this is a completely separate mystery but the characters and relationships might be confusing at first. The narration style which I think of as sort of like entries in a journal get you caught up on who’s who fairly easily. At the party Daisy and Sam are introduced to some people who are going to stage and operetta hence Spirits Onstage. Daisy is convinced to take part at first reluctantly but she truly enjoys playing the part of the witch let’s her be as bad as she wants if only for a little while. Things get muddles when one of the cast members the sultry Mrs. Lippencott’s life is endangered after one of the rehearsals. From there on Daisy is sucked into a wild and wacky mystery. Another enjoyable and entertaining story in the series. Daisy gets into the craziest situations and then bumbles her way out of them with a little help from her friends. I’m a big fan of the series and have enjoyed each and every book. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
Spirits Onstage (A Daisy Gumm Majesty Mystery, Book 9) — Alice Duncan (Dedication + 29 chapters) Dec. 28-30, 2020.
Note: This book was marked #9.
Daisy is in a pickle. When Daisy and Sam is invited to Mrs. P’s house for a celebratory event from solving the previous case, she is roped into participating in an operetta. Naturally, she has no desire to do this, and especially when she finds out she is requested to play the evil character. (However, as the book progresses, she finds that she really likes playing this character, as it allows her to get some frustrations out that she hasn’t been able to do before.)
The operetta is plagued when one of the actor/producer becomes ill and another actor’s husband is ran over and killed in a hit and run accident.
Daisy, naturally figures things out and saves the day. There is a bout of a surprise ending to the story too.
This book had a lot of LOL scenes that made up for it’s sometimes wandering nature. (In other words: I got bored.)
The editing was much better in this story; or, I didn’t notice any issues.
Spirits Onstage (Daisy Gumm Majesty,#8) by Alice Duncan.
Daisy Gumm Majesty is a special woman of the 1920's. She's as smart as a whip in recognizing the darker side of others, while not allowing herself to be tarnished by them. Daisy keeps the world at a distance as well as maintaining her own personal space. Her family and home life are her mainstay. Detective Sam Rotondo is in the process of crossing the barrier from friend to possible significant other and of course...there's (my favorite) Spike. Daisy's dachshund. Daisy's personae is one of the reasons I've enjoyed this series. A welcomed break from the heavier mystery books.
There's much ado about the musical coming to Athena and Daisy will be in it. Sam has also agreed(bless his heart) to sing in it as well. During rehearsal's things take a downward spiral starting with the hit & run of one of the casts husband. It's up to Daisy to find out what really lies behind those smiling cast members.
Another good read but I wish the author could be a bit more consistent. First Daisy was just over 5 feet tall and in this one she is suddenly 5' 4". Where did the inches come from? Sorry but stuff like that any me! The story itself was okay but it just felt a bit too reaching for me. A bit too out there. She has been more or less shanghaid into play a part in the Mikado and now has been asked by Harry to investigate claims by one of the women that her life is in danger. Is it? The woman seems to be trying to sink her claws into every man she comes into contact with including Sam. Add in a boulder, a poisoning, a hit and run and more claims against other people. Will Daisy work out what exactly is going on or will she stumble onto the truth?
Harold introduces Daisy to several friends who want to form a little musical operetta company. Harold convinces Daisy to sing in the operetta to be performed at her church, of all places! After practice begins, Daisy learns one of the singers believes someone is trying to kill her, her estranged husband ends up dead, and another woman turns ill. Daisy believes her symptoms resemble poisoning. Daisy is in the perfect position to investigate and eventually Sam is pulled in also. At the end, Sam agrees to fill a vital role in the operetta, but with strings attached.
This is a good, light cozy mystery series set in 1920’s Pasadena, California. Daisy Majesty performs seances and tarot readings for wealthy people to earn a living but she ends up involved more with criminals than ghosts. In this book, she’s corralled into performing in an amateur production of The Mikado and ends up in a grisly murder by marriage scheme. I read a few of these but took a break for a while because the tone is so relentlessly perky. In these pandemic & protest times, perky seems to be less annoying.
Once again Alice has pulled us into the wonderful world of Daisy, her family and friends. This time Daisy is coerced into performing in a local production of the Mikado surely nothing could go wrong. While she is hesitant at first, she ends up enjoying it ...well until cast mates start getting hurt and people start dying. Can Daisy and Sam work out who the murder is before more die?
I received a free copy of this ebook from ebook discovery. This is my honest and freely given review.
My main problem with these books is that the author assumes that we haven’t read her other books. By book 8 do we really need a detailed run-down on who her aunt is and how Vi came to live with them, or how Sam doesn’t like Harold because of his orientation? Maybe the first 2-3 books that was necessary but now it’s getting old.
Step back in time once again to the age of the roaring 20s and a time of prohibition follow the further adventures of Daisy Majesty and see if she can stay out of trouble .
I LOVE this series! I often read really heavy stuff, pertaining to whatever I am learning at the time and I need something light to read in between. I love this series and this author. I will be so sad when I reach the end of this series, as I have enjoyed it so much!
Another wonderful mystery solved by Daisy Gumm Majesty. This book was wild! And plus I was not expecting that ending! I have not enjoyed a book series this much in a long time.!
I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
I loved this newest addition to a great series. I love Daisy and Sam and the family. I enjoy that Daisy is a great spiritualist. I laughed a lot while reading this story. I loved that Daisy gets to be in an operetta. I loved the twists and turns.
I loved this book. I find it fund to read Alice Duncan's books. It's like she's talking to you in private! Starting to read #9 now. You'll love this book.
Ah, Daisy, you are a delight! The eighth book of the series, and you're still as fresh and funny as you were in the first. You are perfectly cast as Katisha when your church decides to put on a production of The Mikado.
In between rehearsals and trying to solve a mystery, Daisy and Sam don't have too much time together, but that's all right. It gives their romance time to grow slowly, as it should.
The little glimpses we have of Pasadena in the 1920s add a bit of enjoyment for those of us familiar with the town, and Daisy's frequent visits to the rich residents give us a peek behind the walls of the mansions we see driving by.
I love Daisy Gumm Majesty and enjoyed this installment which somehow I missed until a couple of weeks ago. Daisy is singing in public now in an operetta with many of her choir friends and, surprise of all surprises, Sam gets involved as well. It appears her relationship with Sam is finally going forward ....a bit anyway. I can't say much more without giving things away so this is it. Just read the book!
Daisy (Desdemona) Majesty is a gosh darn fake psychic medium who uses her powers of observation to provide "psychic" counselling and to solve mysteries in 1920's Pasadena. Daisy along with her clients, friends and various acquaintances provide a lively picture of life in a much different time . Deceptively simple these stories remind me of "The Thin Man " movies in their tone. Fun and easy to read, I look forward to more of Daisy's adventures.
I love all of Alice Duncan‘s books! More people need to be reading them! They are clean and fun and I love all the historical details in them. I am constantly looking up old buildings and things in Pasadena, and it makes me want to drive there right now. This one had a fun twist at the end, and I really enjoyed it!
Daisy finds herself in another unfamiliar milieu when she gets coerced into appearing in an operetta. Needless to say mayhem ensues among the cast. The relationship develops. Nice cozy read.
