Dragon Herder

Rate this book
Torgny may be a burly, uncivilized mercenary, but even he has his limits. Hired to rid a village of a dragon, Torgny gets quite a shock when he finds the marauding menace is a tiny pink dragon named Jezebel, who takes one look at him and decides she's found a new best friend. Much to the annoyance of her handler, Noel, who seems to believe most people are prejudiced idiots.

Torgny's not sure Noel's wrong about people, but he would really like to be the exception to that opinion. Noel is tall and attractive, and Torgny falls into a case of instant lust.

When Noel decides it's time to move the dragons to safety, Torgny tags along, determined to explore this attraction between them. It's a journey fraught with danger, interfering gods, and rambunctious baby dragons, but if they can survive, they might just find a life for which neither realized they were seeking.

This was a cute story, and the only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because it wasn't longer. Well done.

The initial contrast between Torgny, the dragon slayer, and Noel, the dragon herder, could be seriously problematic. Instead the author decided to treat it as a “minor inconvenience” and ends up showing the funny side of it all in this delightful story about prejudice, first impressions that could not be more incorrect, and a case of instant lust despite all the obstacles. Add some cute baby dragons who act a lot like puppies, a dangerous trip to who knows where, and a few serious, if slightly stupid, dragon hunters and you have wonderful short read that had me smiling the whole way.

Torgny is a barbarian from the north who has been making his living as a mercenary. But that is just what you see if you look no farther than the surface. Once you take the time to really get to know him, you will discover he hides a few fascinating secrets. He is really quite clever, and uses his somewhat unkempt appearance to deceive those who are not worthy of his attention. Deep down he is a great guy, as one of the baby dragons discovers when first meeting him, and he doesn’t give up easily once he has found Noel, and has decided to spend more time with him.

Noel is in charge of a small herd of dragons, not an easy task when humans are trying to hunt them into extinction. He is understandably mistrustful of Torgny when he first finds him paying with a runaway baby dragon, and he keeps up his guard for quite a while. As his secrets begin to emerge I could see why that may be a good idea in general. Torgny is different though – it just takes Noel a while to work that out.

If you like stories about dragons as magical beings, if two men who seem to be enemies sound like an interesting couple, and if you’re looking for a short read that is as funny as it is mysterious and cute, then you will probably like this short story.

4 Heart Review by Tammy

This could have been a very gruesome short story about Torgny, the dragon slayer and Noel, the dragon herder but thankfully the author decided to put a light-hearted spin on it!

Torgny is a fearsome dragon slayer who has been hired to rid a small village of their dragon problem, the only issue is when he lays eyes on the “problem dragon” it turns out to be a tiny pink baby dragon named Jezebel! One look at Jezebels green eyes and Torgny is in love. Noel is frantic when he discovers Jezebel and Torgny together because he knows a slayer when he sees one. The only problem is Jezebel has fallen in love with Torgny and isn’t the slightest bit happy when Noel carry’s her back to their cave.

Luckily for Noel and his dragons when there is a fire in the village Torgny knows it couldn’t possibly have been started by a dragon because the only dragon close to town can’t do more than blow a little bit of smoke! When Torgny finds Noel and the dragons he warns them it’s time to leave because the villagers are coming to kill them. Noel does everything he can think of to get rid of Torgny because as far as he’s concerned all humans are prejudiced idiots and only want to harm him and his dragons. Torgny on the other hand doesn’t really care what Noel thinks and has decided he’s going to help move the dragons and that’s all there is to it!

It’s while they’re on their journey that Torgny finds out that not only is Noel a Demi-God but he can also shift into a large dragon so he can carry the babies who can’t fly. Noel discovers that Torgny isn’t your average barbarian dragon slayer, instead he’s intelligent, witty and sensitive. He also has a very childlike wonder towards the dragons and has developed a permanent attachment to Jezebel. Once Noel relaxes his guard and realises Torgny is in fact someone he could love and Torgny, well, Torgny just has it bad for Noel!(and his dragons).

What they say about opposites attracting must be true, these two are polar opposites who fall in love because they put aside their preconceived ideas and just learnt about each other. This is a very short novella that I loved. If you love dragons and want a short story to lift your spirits, this is the one for you!!

Reviewed for The Novel Approach.

I really wish this story had been longer because I wanted to explore the mythology of the world more. Plus, I really liked Torgny and Noel as characters, and, well, Jezebel. You really can’t get much cuter than a pink baby dragon that just barrels around like she owns the place.

Torgny is a mercenary hired to exterminate dragons, but he has a heart. When he finds Jezebel, he can’t kill her because she’s just too cute. As a result, he puts Noel and his dragons in danger when the townspeople think dragons are the cause of a fire. Because of this, he decides to help Noel move the dragons, whether Noel wants the help or not.

Noel is understandably skeptical of this. He lives alone with the dragons, only sometimes getting a visit from his parent, the god Skandi. But, the two quickly fall for each other, and no one is getting left behind.

I was thrown off at first by how quickly Noel and Torgny fell for each other. I mean, the story takes place over the course of about three or four days, so I did kind of roll my eyes at it, but despite that, I still liked the characters. Also, Noel is hiding a big secret, but I can’t give that away or it would ruin a major plot point! Suffice to say, I wasn’t really expecting it.

There aren’t many other characters—the rest are townspeople or unnamed attackers. The only other person to show up is Noel’s parent, Skandi, who is pretty funny. I wish he had been present longer, or showed up again before the end of the story. In fact, I would read a book on his antics alone.

If you’re looking for a quick read and you like dragons, give this book by K.M. Mahoney a read. If nothing else, you’ll love Jezebel!

I love dragons anything about dragons! I was a little leery about the sexual orientation of this story but I was pleasantly surprised. I truly felt as if I was part of the story and it was nice to see Torgny and Noel's love gently progress thru the story. A wonderful tale of love and the preservation of some wonderful creatures of fantasy! Even the dragons are gentle, loving and giving in this tale. There is a little bit of the mischievous in the fact that Noel's parent is Skandis a male/female deity with a playful side. I am looking forward to more from this author including, I hope a longer version of this story or maybe some more adventures with Torgny and Noel!!

The baby dragons in the blurb convinced me to give this a try. They managed to be surprisingly un-adorable for baby dragons. Never thought that could happen. There were a few surprises that almost made up for the disappointingly annoying baby dragons.

Delightful

Great story. The baby dragons are adorable and the connection between Noel and Torgny was apparent from the start, even though Noel fought it. I enjoyed this very much and will look for more from the author.

Great writing style and a little pink dragon that steals the show! The best quick warm and fuzzy book I've read in a long time. Not overly sweet, just cuddly.
