DREADFUL LIES.
UNEXPECTED LOVE.
IMPOSSIBLE TRUTH.

It only took one heartbeat to change my life—one chilling phone call in the middle of the night.

And then, as if my life didn’t already suck, my dad sends my brother and me to some idyllic island for the summer to live with a grandma we never met. WTH. Naturally, I rebel. In the end, I find myself shipped off to Raven Hallow…and bored to tears.

Until I get an eyeful of the mind-bendingly gorgeous Zane Hunter. The dark-hair cutie makes my pulse go bonkers, and I think, maybe this might not be so bad after all. Six feet of swoon inducing looks, with a hint of Celtic charm in his voice, he was the type of guy that left a string of broken hearts in his wake. And I had all the heartbreak I could handle.

Yet, there is something uncanny, almost supernatural about Zane, and it’s not just his devastating smirk. No matter how much distance I put between us, Raven Hallow isn’t big enough, and the sparking tension between is undeniable. Of course, the one person I want to avoid becomes my salvation.

My past comes back to terrorize me. Someone wants me dead, and the closer I get to the truth, the more I realize my whole life is a lie. I am no longer sure what is more frightening—the attempts on my life or the guy whose heart and soul are synchronized with mine.

I received this book on a read to review basis from NetGalley. Thank you to the author, J. L Weil, and the publisher, Dark Magick Publishing, for this opportunity.

I think this is the sort of book I would have loved whilst in my early teens as the sassy and querulous protagonist, with the every-other-page-presence of eye-rolls and huffy sighs and repertoire of invented insults for people, felt like she would have appealed to my younger self. As an older reader I found her fractious, recalcitrant and ungracious. I also felt that the story had too much instalove and teenage angst and too little plot development for my tastes.

This tale follows Piper, spoiled American teen, sent, with her younger brother, to live with their estranged Grandmother for the summer, following the tragic death of their mother. Their Grandmother lives on, and owns, the island of Raven Hollow, a picturesque island full of snotty, upper-class inhabitants and some spooky and unexplained occurrences...

I think my problem with this book stemmed from my lack of a bond with Piper: her perpetual petulant attitude made her unlikable, in my opinion, and I cared little about the outcome of her ordeals. In fact, I WANTED someone to kick her ass and give her a reason for her self-obsessive grumblings!

Her love interest, Zane, I found demeaning and irritating. It bothered me that Piper fell for his unearthly good looks and could overlook his frosty attitude towards her. It is all explained over the course of the novel that he is attempting to get her to leave the island, in the hopes of saving her life, but, for me, there wasn't a good enough explanation of their instant attraction towards each other.

I found the characters were just two-dimensional projected stereotypes and I could little empathy for them and, therefore, little interest in the outcome of the novel.

The plot was not an uninteresting one and, if I could have overlooked my personal dislike for the characters, I feel I would have enjoyed it. Alas, my will was weak!

Selfish American girl is forced to live with her rich grandma in the middle of nowhere after her mother is shot. Can't even work out why her dad is upset. BUT HOLD ON the house is massive, her suite is massive and there's a hot guy just waiting to take her mind off the fact that her mother was horribly murdered. Yeah, let's get in to his pants. First-person narrative in the voice of a diary of a pathetic little tween that just wants to rebel and twerk semi-naked in da club. Horrible narrative, but I certainly believed it was written (narrated) by an idiot, so that had it going for it.

I did not finish this book. I think this is a sign I should stop reading free Kindle ebooks because had I read the synopsis provided on here I definitely would not have picked this book up.
This book was poorly written in first person as a diary of a self-entitled spoilt brat. I got half way through so I know what is so mysterious about the love interest but that's definitely not a big enough hook to keep me reading.

Here are my notes as I was reading, I'll put it under a spoiler tag and there are quotes. If you think this book might still be for you check these and see if they're your style.

After Piper's mother passes away her father decides to send her to the island of Raven Hollow to live with the grandmother she's never really known. Piper is rebellious and bored being in a place that her mother ran from years ago and never looked back. That is until she meets Zane Hunter and finds herself fascinated with the gorgeous dark-haired bad boy. Piper soon realizes there is something not quite human about Zane and something a bit off about all of Raven Hollow.

White Raven is a book that I really should have loved but found myself quickly annoyed with the main character and just couldn't connect to the story from there on. I tried my best to enjoy the rest of the story line but in the end I also found myself wanting more out of the overall plot and a bit underwhelmed in the end.

Piper is meant to be a rebellious teen with a spunky attitude that should come off as independent and strong. Instead for me I found her to be more of a whiny, self entitled brat if anything. Also, I would have liked to see any sort of sadness when she had just lost her mother, her actions to me seemed a bit heartless to be so cocky and arrogant instead. It just got to the point that I saw her as very childish which ruined the tone of the read for me.

As far as the plot though, I thought that I was going to enjoy a bit of it but it just seemed a very slow pace read that never jumped out at me and got exciting. There's a few moments here and there with a bit of action but it took to the halfway point to get a partial reveal as to what type of supernatural story line the book is about and then another 25% to get the rest of the reveal so the story is over before much even happened.

Overall, not for me I'm afraid. The writing is fine and I'm sure some will love the book but I just didn't connect with this one.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

uhh... idk.

White Raven was a roller coaster of a book. It had some good parts but most of it was annoying to read through. When you meet Piper, the MC, she was okay. A bit whiny for me.. but then she got worse. I get it though - her mother died, her dad is basically non-existent, and she's moving to her grandmothers (which apparently sucks in her opinion). However, her view on this whole move changes once she steps into town. Her grandmother has a mansion, there's hot guys left and right, and the town is pretty creepy at certain parts of the day.

Oh, did I forget that people also want to kill her for some weird ass reason?

Piper was either whiny, annoying, or complete boy crazy over Zane. There was a bit of a forbidden romance there.. but I still don't even understand the relationships in this book. She's betrothed to someone else (Zane's older brother) but they never met until she came to town? Apparently this contract was made decades ago because people simply can't switch Zane in for his older brother. Plus the way they viewed this "arranged marriage" kind of baffled me. The whole you have to pop out children for our family line was a bit outrageous to me - but it's just a book.

Besides that, it was an okay book. I don't really get the romance or supernatural part yet. Just kind of hoping something will make more sense in the next book.

Received a copy via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

After the death of her beloved mother, Piper and her younger brother have been shipped off by heard dead-beat dad to live with her mysterious rich grandmother on Raven Hallow. Piper is determined to make her summer as miserable and sucky as possible. Or so was the plan until she met zoe and her her sexy, devil may-care brother Zane Hunter. There is something strange about Zane, however, aside from the electric passion they share(read as: insta-love). They've got their work cut out for them when Piper's destiny ends up being much larger and more important than she could have ever imagined.

Insta-love. god I hate it. soulmates, yes I don't mind that plot. But I really get a stick up my butt when "soulmate" is the reason they fall in love. The only reason I let it slide is becausee their banter is hilarious and this new mythology is fairly interesting.

This was a great YA fantasy read, though I'd definitely recommend it for ages 16+ as there are some mature themes such as loss and possible sexual themes.

I'll say that it was definitely interesting enough that the moment I finished it, I hopped on Amazona and bought the second book. After that, I started on this Author's first book series, Divisa.

In short, for anyone older than 20, in my opinion, these are quick fun trashy reads that will make you smile. No hard thinking. We all need books like that once in a while :)

You know, I often wonder are all young man in the paranormal world must be a jerk to the heroine in the beginning???

Of course, it's for they (girls) on good. He simply wants to protect her from himself, or somebody/something else, and tray to push her away with bad attitude.

description

All young man out there, next time tray by telling a girl the truth, and maybe, just maybe because of her ignorants, she will not get in the dangerous situation.

And yes, you can pull her hair when you 5 years old, when you older, tray be nice to her or kiss her, and then, she will know you like her!!!

description

That be said, I must admit I like this book, regardless that sometimes I was little frustrating with everybody for keeping the girl in the dark. But, on the other hand, what would we read if there was no drama and misunderstanding?

I did love the main hero (he end up be most trustworthy, and honest with the heroine) he protect her, and the fact that he is good-looking, dark, and dangerous is just a bonus.

I also love when she goes all bad-ass when he is in danger!

description

You go, girl!!!

There is no cliffhanger but, there is also no satisfaction ending. This is series, and I think I will read next one for sure!

Made it about 25% of the way through this book and I'm done. So far very little has happened. There is obviously hinting at a big secret, but the writing is just not for me. And the MC is way too much 'moody teenager' for my tastes. I mean, if I want to deal with a moody teen, I'll just work up my 9 going on 16-year-old daughter. Also, I think the author was trying for the hot but mean bad boy thing with Zane. But I just wasn't feeling it. Everything about what I read so far felt like the author was just trying too hard.

I loved this book! It's such a great start to a new series! The characters were complex and the romance was well written. Everything unraveled just as it needed to and I'm already needing to know more! Can't wait for the second book!

Following the murder of her mother, Piper and her brother are sent to Raven Hallow to spend the summer with their Grandmother. Piper is full of anger and bitterness and is not happy to be there. She begins to change her mind when she sees Zane Hunter. There is an instant attraction to the bad boy of the island. Despite everyone warning her away, including Zane himself, Piper just can't stay away. Then strange things start happening to Piper and there are a couple of attempts on her life. Zane is there to save her and he unwillingly starts to tell her what is going on around her.

I was completely annoyed with Piper's character at the beginning of the book, nearly to the point where I wondered if I would get through it. There was also a lot of eye-rolling when the instant attraction between Piper and Zane was described. However, once the action started happening though, things got better. I am now curious enough about this world they live in and how it works, that I want to read further. Also, Piper was left in quite the predicament at the end of the book, and I just can't leave her that way.

Found this book through Amazon and it was okay.

I wasn't really impressed with anything and I hated the "soul-mate/insta-love" thing going on. I get what the author did there but it wasn't working for me. It would've been better if it was dragged out a bit more but the sexual tension made it all eye rolling for me.

I did enjoy the story-line and and where the author was taking it, i wish there was more to the world building, and the writing needed more but overall it wasn't horrible.

The main character annoyed me a bit and I like my characters spunky and sassy but she was a bit much and came off as a bit annoying instead of defiant or rebellious.

Sadly I won't carry on with the series it wasn't enjoyable enough for me to continue.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don’t even know where to start. I have been having a lot of free time on my hands lately and thought I will work myself through the ever-growing list of NetGalley books.

I can’t remember why I requested this story in the first place, because reading the synopsis I can’t really find anything that would personally interest me in the story. I’m not trying to be rude; it just didn’t seem like my cup of tea.

Before I started reading I double checked the author’s other works, since the name sounded familiar and I wasn’t surprised to find that I had read one of her novellas a while back.

What did surprise me was the sarcasm that dripped from said novella’s review and I had a feeling that I might be in for a struggle with this one.

Now, I am a professional and can keep my personal biases in check, but I have to admit that this story did not fare any better than the novella.

I could tell that the story had potential to be a captivating YA paranormal series, sadly there were just too many elements that went completely sideways to salvage it.

For starters, what was the protagonist’s deal? I get that she is supposed to be a teenager, who just lost her mother (don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler).

The more I read the more I was reminded of the novella’s protagonist’s traits: supposed to be witty and sarcastic, but comes across as spoiled and ungrateful, needs to establish that she is a tough cookie, needs to establish that she is not like the other girls (you don’t say? Really? I mean others would still have some manners), and falls for a guy after seeing him for three seconds. Got it. same stock everything, different story.

I couldn’t stand the protagonist’s way of judging everyone. Her grandmother was an old woman, other girls were just competition (of course, lets support this whole idea that girls should compete with each other, instead of supporting each other) and everything just sucked, because it didn’t go her way.

I think you get the picture.

The plot was there somewhere, it was just really hard to see. According to the synopsis, this entire story should have gone a completely different direction, but alas a pair of ice blue eyes (attached to the main squeeze the protagonist literally moans over) entered at some point and then who cares about the plot.

I felt like that story should have started a lot earlier than it did. A lot of things were hinted at and not explained at all. But then again that would have taken time away from those icy blue eyes and the moaning.

The writing was horrible. A lot of catch phrases were used. Quite a bit of cultural referencing was also used in order to establish that someone was cool. Words were used incorrectly, and sentences were left unfinished.

The attempts to make the protagonist sound sarcastic just ended up making her sound tedious and annoying.

Overall, I tried. It wasn’t for me. I wouldn’t recommend it.

There are three things I look for when reading a paranormal romance.

1. Killer plot.

2. Paranormal race I’ve never heard of before.

3. And the most important: a hot, bad boy alpha male that will make me want to jump in to the pages and steal him away from the heroine.

Which ones did I get to check off in this book?

ALL THREE

This was such a refreshing read. I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Weil’s Divisa series so I knew she would deliver in this new, exciting paranormal series where things are never as they seem, and danger is everywhere. I was never bored for a second and devoured this book in a matter of a day. I was hooked and enjoyed every moment of sarcasm slinging from both Piper and Zane. The romance was awesome, the paranormal aspect kept you guessing until it was finally revealed, and the secondary characters were amazing. All in all this was a fantastic read. The only issue I had a problem with was the editing. There were quite a few misspellings, incorrect words, and it seemed like there were sentences that didn’t make sense. But I could look past those because this was a great story and I look forward to reading the second book in the series come 2016!

White Raven by J. L. Weil = 5 stars

description

Fabuła schematyczna do bólu.

When Piper and her brother get the call to say that their mother was murdered, they are all absolutely devastated. Piper's dad decides to send them to their Grandmother, who they don't know, in Ravens Hollow. This is the Grandmother they've never meet, the one who their own mother left so she could be with their father, the one who's rich! From the minute they arrive on the island, Piper and her brothers life changes totally! Can Piper find out the secrets of her mothers life? Why does she keep seeing the same tattoo on peoples hands? Just what is going on in this small community and why does she feel drawn to the standoffish Zane?

This took me a little while to get totally into but once I did, I really enjoyed it. It started like so many other young adult books and I was initially rolling my eyes a lot and thinking, here we go again! But then it gets interesting, and I found myself eagerly reading the next page. It's not perfect, but still worth the read.

I liked all the characters, mostly, and by mostly I mean Piper annoyed me at times. I can't pinpoint why exactly but I think it was because she was so whiny at the start. I think if a character doesn't grab you from the beginning, then it's hard to totally like them the whole way through.

The romance was.... hmmm, not sure what to call it really other than similar to thousands of other books! Girl sees hot boy, hot boy is standoffish and doesn't want anything to do with her, yet is somehow drawn to her, girl keeps thinking of him and both end up together, yawn!! I wanted something more from it but sadly, it was just OK.

The plot was what saved the book for me. I loved the history and mythology behind the book. I loved finding out about the White Ravens and can't wait to find out about the Reaper war. It was fast paced enough and mostly held my attention throughout. I will definitely read the next one to see what happens, though I do hope a lot of the cliche is gone!!!

Caitlin Kelly was really good. It's my first book narrated by her and I enjoyed it. She had the right tones for the right times and gave each character their own. I will have to see if there is anything else by her that I'd like to listen to!

This wasn't a great book but it wasn't a bad one either. I'm thinking maybe that I've been reading too much. I'm starting to feel that so many books are too similar. The main character Piper at times annoyed me. However, I understand that life got the best of her. Hopefully now that she knows who and what she has to deal with maybe she will be different. I will admit that I liked this book enough that I will be reading the next one to find out what happens.

(Tratto dal libro)

Bentornate fenici,

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed the first installment of the Raven series. It had just enough teenage girl angst to be interesting and let the main character Piper be relatable without coming across as teenage drama queen. The book certainly took its time developing Piper and her struggle to accept her mother's death and having to live with her grandmother before it began to explore the paranormal aspects of the story. I really liked that as it gave the book a contemporary feel for a while.

I also am a fan of the author's writing style, as it flows elegantly and the descriptions are so vivid. The tension between the characters is real and the romance building is so believable that I hurt for our characters. Piper eventually learns exactly who she is, and just what her Grandma Rose had planned for her. Apparently, agreements made between the leaders are binding, like it or not. But Piper's soul yearns for Zane, the gorgeous and brooding brother with a hint of an Irish accent, and my heart yearns for them both.

Piper is in danger because of who she is, and so many of the supernaturals keep trying to kill her. She does manage to come into some of her powers and, of course, Zane is always there to save her. The book ends in quite a tragic cliffhanger and now I really need to know what happens next. Just when things were getting good! Does Piper survive the coming battles? Can she change her destiny and end up with Zane? I guess I'll have to read on.

I listened to the audio of this book and truly enjoyed the narrator's tone of voice, the accents (oh the accents!) and the emotion. I'll be looking up her other books as well.

“I will be your sword. I will be your shield. I will defend you until my last breath. This vow I swear freely, to be your weapon as long as you shall live.”

Breathtaking Series. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

Piper's mother was murdered. If that wasn't heartbreaking enough, now she is being sent away to live with her grandmother for the summer, back to the same place her mother vowed to never return to. While Piper tries to make an okay summer out of the situation with the handsome Zane, but thats when things start to get crazy. Zane is keeping secrets and being mysterious, it has something to do with the reason she was sent here and with her grandmother, could it even have something to do with her mother's death?

I'm already in love with this series. The characters, setting and plot are all so unique and wonderful. In the beginning I thought this was going to be another Twilight-type book but man was I wrong, its not even close.

The book is told in Piper's point of view, and I really liked her as a main character. She's sassy, caring and strong. I usually don't read other people's reviews before finishing my own, but I was really surprised by some of the ratings, and I just wanna take a minute to talk about it and defend the main character. So what these people said about her were that she's ungrateful, a spoiled little girl and that she's rude.
In the beginning of the story we are told that Piper knows nothing about her grandmother, except the fact that she's rich and her mother ran away from home. Obviously thats going to leave her being a bit suspicious and of her grandmother and not trusting her, she's not going to run up and hug her pretending everything is okay, so I understand why she's sometimes rude to her grandmother, who is basically a stranger since they've never met before. I absolutely don't understand how she's "spoiled" or ungrateful, yes she was put into a giant house with servants and all the money she could want, but she didn't ask for it, and its definitely not something she was used to since she was living in an apartment with her parents and brother.
End of rant...

The romance in this story is pretty good. If you like the romance in Throne of Glass series, or in the Lux series where the main characters make fun of each other and pretend to hate each other but secretly love one another, then this is the romance for you.
But that love triangle tho.. No matter how sick of love triangles you are, you will like this one. I'm not going to spoil it, just take my word that its different and you will definitely like it.

Based on what I read, this book is really a hit or miss with everyone, but mostly a hit. I definitely recommend giving this a try, and hopefully you love it as much as me. I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 and 3, I'm addicted.

Happy Reading,
Aneta

I really enjoyed the first installment of the Raven series. It had just enough teenage girl angst to be interesting and let the main character Piper be relatable without coming across as teenage drama queen. The book certainly took its time developing Piper and her struggle to accept her mother’s death and having to live with her grandmother before it began to explore the paranormal aspects of the story. I really liked that as it gave the book a contemporary feel for a while.

I also am a fan of the author’s writing style, as it flows elegantly and the descriptions are so vivid. The tension between the characters is real and the romance building is so believable that I hurt for our characters. Piper eventually learns exactly who she is, and just what her Grandma Rose had planned for her. Apparently, agreements made between the leaders are binding, like it or not. But Piper’s soul yearns for Zane, the gorgeous and brooding brother with a hint of an Irish accent, and my heart yearns for them both.

I guess I’ll have to read on.

I listened to the audio of this book and truly enjoyed the narrator’s tone of voice, the accents (oh the accents!) and the emotion. I’ll be looking up her other books as well.

pooled ink Reviews:

First thoughts: Daaaaang, this girl has got attitude for days. And oh ho ho I was right! From start to finish Piper is armed and trigger-happy with her quips and bullets of sarcasm. No one is exempt from her rebellious tongue. Also, I feel like she used every idiom in America. She had those whipping out of her mouth or thoughts every other minute.

I blew through this book in mere hours, which was a pleasant surprise considering I didn’t look up much about this book before taking the leap. Is this book Tolkien or Shakespeare? No, but it never claimed to be and that doesn’t mean it wasn’t captivating in its own way. If you’re looking for a delicious paranormal romance to dissolve into then this book would be a good choice.

White Raven unravels and twists a world full of Death and romance as Piper discovers the secrets her mother died trying to bury. A hierarchy is being challenged, forbidden love tears at young hearts, and powers are suddenly awakening in full force. Dripping with sarcasm, burning with passion, and tense with an oncoming battle White Raven invites you innocently upon its shores just to trap you inside its pages holding you yearning for the conclusion.

For me it's a 3.5 star rating but closer to the 4 stars than to the 3 stars.
After the dead of Piper's mom she's off to the island Raven Hallow. The island is full of mysteries and she is part of it. But Piper doesn't exactly know what this will mean for her. She is a bit ignorant.

I did like the story a lot. The paranormal / fantasy element of White Raven is very cool. Sadly J.L. Weil chose to reveal it halfway through the story. Which makes the first half a bit boring but it couldn’t stop me from loving it. This makes me so curious for the second book in the series. I hope that this paranormal / fantasy element comes back like a lot!

I love the fact that the first name’s of the Hunter family start with a z. So you have Zane, he is describes as a bad boy not good enough for Piper. But who can tell that Piper doesn’t like Zane? This relationship development is okay for me. I can predict a lot but that’s not the biggest problem in the world.
