Shawn Byous’ “Because I Stubbed My Toe” is a really cute picture book that shows how one bad thing leads to another bad thing and continues on until, finally, the bad thing that happened turns our=t to be a blessing for the better. This book is easy to read, interesting, and beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend this!

Hilarious and great for cause and effect lessons. Think this might be the winner of FRA voting at my school this year.

It's just one thing after another for the protagonist in this picture book. After he stubs his toe, all sorts of things are set into motion. Just when it looks as though things couldn't get any worse, a sweet surprise comes his way. Young readers will smile at the turn of events in this picture book, which will probably help them see stubbing your toe in a different light.

This book shares a very similar plot with "Slam!: A Tale of Consequences" by Adam Stower because it a story of cause and effect. The difference is that in this book the main character is aware of what is going on around him and the end consequence is a pretty nice one for him. The boy starts his morning by stubbing his toe on a chair that sets off a chain of events that the reader can delight in reading about as they turn each page.

The illustrations in this book are full of color and very visually appealing with an almost layering effect. The end pages, with a red background and black-and-white pictures, are a stark contrast to the book's color illustrations, but are especially fun to look at as they capture the chaos of what happens in the book. This is a book with such great illustrations that non-readers could look through it and understand the gist of the story without reading any of the words.

In "Because I Stubbed My Toe," a boy stubs his toe one morning which causes a series of mayhems.
This silly picturebook would make children smile and laugh on the series of events caused by one boy stubbing his toe. Sometimes children love reading funny books which do not have specific lessons and social values. The fact that this book is on the list of the Children’s Choices by the prestigious International Literacy Association revealed that children loved reading this picture book. This book includes chain effects of silly action, stubbing a toe, but does not provide clear lessons or artistic values, so I gave it 3 stars.

Written in the same chain-reaction style as "There was an old woman who swallowed a fly", however a simpler, modernised form for younger readers with a small amount of text on each page with great illustrations and a fun ending for the boy who stubbed his toe. Would have liked a bit more depth to the story incorporating a moral, message or unpacking the emotions/feelings experienced from the chain of events.

This funny book kicks ass in a way that harkens back to those Looney Toons cartoons where objects fall into each other in a sorta domino effect. A kid stubs his toe, falls halfway out a window, and sets off a chain reaction of pratfalls into collisions into chaos that's straight out of Buster Keaton. Don't get me? Then get this book from your library! You'll see? Not wanting to "toe the line" but....

(no kindle version to click here on Goodreads?? odd!?!??!) it doesn't please me to rate this so low. but let me explain. i read it through KU and the book does not take up but a bit of the kindle ... like the middle of the screen and you can hardly see the illustrations. the illustrations are beyond awesome. i mean so super way cool but u can not see the details close up. so sad. sad face. i mean this author/illustrator is a genius for sure ... but not happy by the size of the book. make sense?

This story is a hilariously drawn chain of events that leads to a satisfying resolution of the initial drama. Kids will crack up over the pictures and the ridiculous events, and this story teaches them that it's possible for something good to come from something bad.

Because my daughter is ALWAYS stubbing her toe on something, I chose this book for us to read during the summer reading program at our local library. She thought that it was funny, but she was very concerned about the poor big toe that got stubbed. Ha!

Ouch!

This was a great book, my son really enjoyed it and the ending was unexpectedly funny! The illustrations were beautiful and caught by kids attention, he noticed things that I didn’t, and the prose reminded me of the “House that Jack Built”, easy to read with your kiddos.

not a predictable ending

Such a cute book about a collective set of events happening, all because of one action. But the ending was definitely not when I saw coming. And that was so awesome.

Short and fun!

It’s like a book version of a rube Goldberg machine! Main character sure was a lucky duck, my son really liked it!

The writing (font) was tiny on our IPAD

We really liked this book, but the writing was tiny, tiny, tiny. We really like how it turned out in the end. My 8 yo favorite part was when the ice cream fell into the window.

Get ready to move! Get ready for the best illustrations ever! Get ready for a cumulative tale that will have you laughing and being entertained right up the last page. With wit and hilarity Shawn Byous uses the butterfly effect to lead you through a sequence of silly and entertaining events that will keep your kids asking to read the book one more time please. The drama begins with a stubbed toe causing a chair to fall, which scares the dog, who scares the cat, who jumps out the window....well you get it...one thing leads to another and the whole fiasco is brought back home again with an unexpected and yummy ending!

The text is simple and sparse - perfect for early readers and the illustrations can stand on their own quite nicely. The colours Byous chooses are vibrant and strong and the expressions that he captures on both man and beast are truly wonderful. The illustrations are cartoonish, comical and the action continuous. Byous adds symbols to denote crashing and moving which ratchets up the excitement and involvement of the reader. A truly great book that both girls and boys will fall in love with. (and adults too)
