Mistborn [Dramatized Adaptation] #2, part 3

The Well of Ascension (3 of 3) [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
Evil has been defeated. The war has just begun.

They did the impossible, deposing the godlike being whose brutal rule had lasted a thousand years. Now Vin, the street urchin who has grown into the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and Elend Venture, the idealistic young nobleman who loves her, must build a healthy new society in the ashes of an empire.

They have barely begun when three separate armies attack. As the siege tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.

It may just be that killing the Lord Ruler was the easy part. Surviving the aftermath of his fall is going to be the real challenge.

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

The release of Wind and Truth in December 2024—the fifth and final book in the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive series—marks a significant milestone for me. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. Now is a great time to get into the Stormlight Archive since the first arc, which begins with Way of Kings, is complete.

During our crowdfunding campaign for the leatherbound edition of Words of Radiance, I announced a fifth Secret Project called Isles of the Emberdark, which came out in the summer of 2025. Coming December 2025 is Tailored Realities, my non-Cosmere short story collection featuring the new novella Moment Zero.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, came out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that saw the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man. These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. Now that the first arc of the Stormlight Archive is wrapped up, I’ve started writing the third era of Mistborn in 2025.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, four of the five Secret Projects, and various novellas, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, released in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the three stories in Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. These two novellas are also featured in 2025’s Tailored Realities. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart, The Emperor’s Soul, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

I hope you aren't yet sick of me expressing my undying love for these dramatized adaptations. They are a great way of experiencing your favorite stories and make them come to life with a great cast of voice actors and sound effects/music. If you love audiobooks, you'll love this even more. And I'd wager, even if audiobooks aren't your thing but you love movies and reading - GraphicAudio truly is "a movie in your mind".

This is a review for the Graphic Audio version of the Mistborn Trilogy.

Review of The Final Empire
Review of The Well of Ascension

I listen to audiobooks all the time. I enjoy them a lot, even if I'm reading along, while listening. When I discovered that Graphic Audio produced these magnificent audios for the Mistborn Trilogy, I decided that I had to listen to them while reading my copies of the books.

For those who don't know what's the difference between Graphic Audio and common audiobook productions, the former has music, sound effects, and a whole cast (Yes! A narrator and one actor per character!)

The cast was great, they matched the character's voices I had imagined pretty well.

I can assure you, they are amazing. I can't explain it with words... just go and try them. They will change the way you think about audiobooks.

4.5 stars.

As all the other ones, the audio and voice acting parts were amazing.
The actors are well cast and the story is well adapted.
The war rages on and the intrigue, plotting and scheming increased, which I loooved..

Vin's character got very nice development throughout all three parts of this audio book, as did Elend.
I grow to like and connect to the characters more and more even though I still miss Kelsier.

And since the beginning of part 1/3 of the Well of Ascension, I have had a feeling that Vin or Elend (maybe both) will die in the ongoing war and turmoil. I can still only hope this is not going to come true, but all the other deaths in these book seem to point out that my feeling might be correct. I'll have to wait and see.

I really like the way the romantic relationship is written, like it is just a part of life (which it is) and not like the most important or otherwise big thing in the story. And the fact that hardly anything seems to be black and white, but all grey, makes me love the book even more.

Even though the story is nice, it is still not completely original among the fantasy I have read (which is no way near as much as it should be). This, and the writing, especially in dialog, that seems to be off at certain moments, made me give all three parts of the Well of Ascension not 5 stars, but 4.5.

I'd definitely recommend reading this book, or maybe even better, listening to this audio version.

Once again I enjoyed this book. The last part was so engrossing that I had to listen to the whole audiobook in 1 go.I absolutely loved the pace the book followed. However, the way Sanderson ended the war, had me longing for some more actions.Mistborn Elend vs Straff would be a good one to start with. Especially, realizing now that Elend had become a Mistborn. After Zane's demise, Vin was seeming to have become this ridiculously overpowered mistborn, at one moment it seemed to me that even Marsh would'nd stand a chance against her(Assuming that Vin was oblivious about the needles being the weak-spots of an inquisitor)

I would say that in my honest opinion this book, although not as good as the former book, it had its excellent ups and moderate downs. The spy Kondra, Tindwyl's death are some of the best secens in the book.

Another thing that caugth my interest was Elend's character development. From a naive boy, who would prefer to sit in a corner and read his books while expecting to not have any human interaction, to a wise leader who would put his people ahead of his own needs. The politics in the books have to be one of the most intriguing plot out of most of the books I have read(excluding Jefferey Archer of-course).

WHAT
THE
FUCK

it's 2:20 AM
My mind is going so many directions
I really shouldn't have stayed up 🤣🤣 i should've finished this part in the morning... todo es culpa de Camilo 😤 (y si, Cam. Todo es culpa tuya 😝)

I mean... i had that presentimiento de que algo faltaba, that something was going to go off the rails totally. I did not think AT ALL that this was going to be it
Y lo tuvimos bajo las narices todo el rato 🤦🏻‍♀️

Justamente estaba pensando
"Pues, andamos muy enfocados en el hero of ages, maybe they should've switched the titles of the books or something so it would make sense"
Little did i know ... 🙃

Also, Tindwyll MVP 💜🤸🏻‍♀️ and i kinda want one of those Koloss swords, looks badass 💃🏻

Great experience with the audiobooks, btw. 🥰

vin: trying to make a decision
elend: i trust you 😱🥹😍

the twist of releasing the power being the wrong thing to do was good and I’m generally interested in the mystery of the gods and the past but tbh found the major plot of the siege and then battle of Luthadel to be really tedious with few shining spots. Not sure if I enjoy most of the characters progressions, I’m finding Sazed so confusing and Elend so bland and Vin so predictable in her insecurities.

Interested in the potential hint of Kelsier being somehow a mist wraith or something

Tldr more god stuff less Vin and Elend’s lack of communication lol

This is the best part of the book. It was so intense for me I couldn't continue to do anything else but listen until the very end.

Compared to The Final Empire this book has a larger scope of things. The crew has different roles now and it takes a while to set everything up which makes for a slow start. However everything picks up throughout the book as more and more things start happening all around and the ending is filled up with so much action, emotion and twists that it is well worth the initial setup.

A very good sequel and an amazing Graphic Audio production. I am looking forward to The Hero of Ages. If you liked The Final Empire I can't imagine you won't like this one as well.
