Death of a Mortal

The epic adventure of Throne of Glass collides with the rebellion and political unrest of Red Queen in this fast-paced dark fantasy romance packed with magic, betrayal, and impossible stakes.

For mortals in Caelia, every day could be their last. Especially in Ashenholt.

Nineteen-year-old Naci Corren spent her life surviving a world that never wanted her. Born mortal in a realm ruled by magic, she’s known nothing but cruelty at the hands of her father and the fae. But in a brutal magical attack that puts the life of her youngest sister at stake, Naci makes a desperate decision: take her sister and run. Find her mother, who she only remembers in her dreams.

Freedom is sweet until it leads them right into the fae king’s capital.

Captivated by a charming, flirty stranger with secrets of his own, Naci finds herself drawn into his world—a tangled mess of deceit, betrayal, and a growing threat of complete mortal annihilation. But whispers of a rebellion spark one devastating night that changes everything, awakening something dark and vengeful inside her—something in her heart that even the vicious, broody warrior from afar cannot tame.

Because the gods prophesied something ominous the day she was born. Not a prophecy promising salvation, only a choice:

Save the world that took everything from her…or burn it to ash.

Death of a Mortal is the first book in the four-book series.

This story sucked me in right from the start. Naci and her half-sister run away from home to look for Naci’s mother. All they really know is that she’s part of the rebellion and where she was last seen. They travel to the town and of course nothing goes as planned but they manage anyway. A stranger helps them get into the castle to ask around for information about her mom. Things just get more complicated from there.

This book had me emotional and wanting to throw my book across the room at some points. I really enjoyed reading this and couldn’t put it down!

I loved Noxie, the crow 🐦‍⬛
Nella and Naci’s relationship was so sweet 🥲
The found family was on point after the family Naci was born into because her dad and other half sister were the worst.
Team Drayce all the way. F Varyn.

I’m excited for the next book!

Thank you for the opportunity to read "Death of a Mortal" as an ARC.

The prologue immediately caught my interest with its hints of Greek mythology. This book is a beautiful package with hidden scars. The main character, Naci, has truly been through it. Naci’s character really captured her trauma and dissociation with ease. Despite her morose energy at times, it is completely understandable given the catastrophic events she has survived. This is all while trying to navigate her new reality in tandem with loss and betrayl. Living in survival mode leads Naci to several moments where she rages.

While the book had a slow start for me and took a while for the pieces to come together, the potential is definitely there. Naci's raw, disinhibited, and callow nature leaves me curious to see how she evolves as her story progresses.

Wow. I was hooked by the prologue and by the end I am simply deceased. Give me book two now! I love this world and the characters! N.A. I is perfectly imperfect- she fights for the ones she loves fiercely, can admit her own fears and faults and goes tremendously throughout the story. I love the multiple love interests-you know who I’m rooting for! The way this book ends- the raw emotion will literally gut you before trying to piece you back together. I can’t wait for book 2 to see where the storyline goes.

initial thoughts are as follows: holy crap, OMG and how long do I have to wait for book two?!

Death of a Mortal gave me everything I want when I pick up a romantasy. It has incredible character development, emotional depth, and a found family that you can’t help but fall in love with.

One of my favorite parts was watching Naci grow throughout the story. Alongside Naci, and side characters like Drayce, Arie, and Bramick, and Kellan, you really get to see this family form around her after everything she’s been through. That found family aspect was one of the strongest parts of the book for me because they constantly remind her that she’s worth fighting for, worth loving, and worth caring about.

I also loved how Naci’s emotional journey was handled. She has to work through so much anger, rage, grief, and loss, and I think that’s something a lot of readers can relate to. It actually reminded me a lot of Nesta’s journey in A Court of Silver Flames. Naci learns that just because her emotions are big doesn’t make her a bad person—it makes her human. She’s going to make mistakes. She’s going to do things she regrets or feels ashamed of, but that’s exactly what makes you root for her. By the end of the book, you really see her start embracing those darker emotions and turning them into something that helps her grow instead of letting them consume her.

I also think M.L. Godwyn does such a phenomenal job writing complex characters. Nobody is perfect. Nobody makes the right decision every single time. People mess up, they make bad choices, and that’s okay. That’s what makes these characters feel so real. They’re the kind of heroes you want to continue reading about because you want to watch them learn, grow, and become better versions of themselves. I think every major character shows that progression in some way.

I am really just looking forward to seeing the development of all these characters and learning more about them. I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface with so many of these characters, and I’m excited to dive deeper into all of their stories.

And that ending… the twist completely rounded out the first book and made it clear that there’s so much more coming in books two through four. It honestly leaves you wondering, “how are they going to get out of this?” By the end, it really feels like all hope is lost, and that’s exactly the kind of ending that makes me immediately want to pick up the next book.

This book had me in a chokehold, From the very beginning you get sucked in. The Goddess of curiosity has always had a soft spot for the mortals and once she gets told a prophecy from one of her brothers she decides that she will leave the Gods realm to become a mortal to try and save Caelia (the mortal/fae realm).

Naci, our FMC, grew up having a terrible upbringing full of abuse and neglect because she was mortal. She never understood why but she had done her best to try to protect herself and her little sister Nella. They runaway to try and find her mother who she doesn't remember but knows by name.

Her and Nella have a crazy adventure ahead of them with very little. I absolutely loved the way Naci was always there to protect her sister from harm. Their bond was beautiful and what comes later was truly devasting. I felt every moment and felt like I was a part of the story. Naci is fiery and has a smart mouth that just makes you chuckle.

The found family in this book was honestly awesome too. I love when things come together like that. I will say there were parts in this book that I just knneeewwww but there was a lot of parts where I did not and was absolutely baffled.

The world building and political intrigue and the rebellion going on was fabulous. I wanted to know what was going to happen next and what these new place would look like. It is was greatly detailed. I cannot wait for book 2 to find out how this all plays out for them because that ending with the homewrecking whore, iykyk, was absolutely bonkers!

Thank you M.L. Godwyn for this amazing privilege to get to read your book before release. It was magnificent and I cannot wait to continue into this world.

The fae giveth, and the fae taketh away.

What happens when you live your life in struggle, with prejudice against an entire kind based off of not only the life you live, the abuse you’ve endured, but also the whisperings of the unjust treatment of mortals only to find out things are more than they seem. Are the fae truly so bad? There’s mystery surrounding Naci’s identity. Answers that beg to be unleashed.

And wow, the lore. The journey that our fmc embarks on that changes the trajectory of her life, and leads to answers that lead to ruin or peace. One thing for certain is Naci is… more. And I feel like you get a sense for this pretty early on. She is also strong, driven, and there is nothing she wouldn’t do to protect her loved ones, especially her younger sister Nella. Even if it means putting herself in harms way. Naci is actually quite bold in the way she dives headfirst into conflict, and isn’t scared of sacrifice. It’s one of the things that I love most about her character.

I loved seeing the story evolve and Naci fully embodying the badass that she is. To see her find the inner spark to drive her towards her purpose, and find out more about who she is, and who her mother was, was satisfying and felt full circle. You have the fun elements of magic, shape shifting, betrayal, scheming, rebellion and a broody moody mmc that is worth drooling over. Then there’s a plot twist that I did have an inkling about, but was still surprised to see play out.

But star of the show for me? NOXIE. I absolutely loved Noxie and his super lovable crow self, and I loved reading him on the page.

My final thoughts are I will never forgive Varyn, I feel like karma is just, and I hope the villain gets what is coming lol.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.

Death of a Mortal completely surprised me. I expected a court fantasy, but about halfway through the story it takes a turn I never saw coming and suddenly felt like The Hunger Games collided with elemental magic, rebellion, and dark fantasy. From that point on, I couldn’t put it down.

Naci is such an easy heroine to root for. After growing up under an abusive father in a world where mortals are treated as less than human, her determination to protect her sister and fight back against the gods and the ruling class made every victory and heartbreak hit even harder.

The worldbuilding was one of my favorite parts. There are secret passageways hidden throughout the castle, a shape shifting prince who transforms into a wolf, a wonderfully mysterious crow familiar, elemental magic mixed with darker shadow magic that reminded me of One Dark Window, and just enough political intrigue to keep me constantly questioning everyone’s motives.

The romance was exactly my kind of slow burn. The chemistry builds naturally, and yes…the steamy scene in the castle library absolutely lived up to the hype.

I also loved that the story constantly kept me guessing. Just when I thought I understood where the plot was headed, another twist completely changed the game. The stakes continue to rise, and by the ending I was desperate to know what happens next.

If you enjoy:

* 🖤 Slow-burn romantasy
* 🐺 Shape-shifting princes
* ✨ Elemental and dark magic
* 🏰 Secret passages and castle intrigue
* 🐦 Animal familiars
* ⚔️ Rebellion against oppressive rulers
* 💔 High emotional stakes and shocking twists

…then I highly recommend adding Death of a Mortal to your TBR. I’ll definitely be picking up book two!

Death Of A Mortal by M.L Godwyn
@mlgodwyn.author

In a world of Fae and Mortals Naci lives a somber life with her sweet little sister Nella, her evil step-sister Aemilia, and her abusive father Cassius.
Her mother left them, her step-mother left them, and now she is left to pick up the pieces and endure the traumas while protecting her sister the best that she can.

A way to escape this tragic monotony leads Naci and Nella into the forest, towards mystery and danger.

Guidance by a little black bird (Noxie), leads them to a banshee that reveals glimpses of what's ahead for them.

Animal Companion
Fae Shifters
Elemental Magic
Rebellion and Political Corruption
Found Family
Enemies to Lovers To ???

This tale is woven so well with high stakes adventures, processing traumas, Elemental magic systems, and a dash of spice 🤌

Naci's drive and recognition of her flaws and her growth was portrayed well as the story went on.
You grow to love (or love to hate) a lot of characters throughout. Personalities are portrayed naturally, even minor characters have glimpses of depth and reasons for their motivation.
I truly appreciated the balance between world-building and character development.

I'm so excited to continue this story with the next iteration!

Death of a Mortal - Advanced Reader Copy
4⭐️

This books was slow to draw me in, but once it picked up I was locked in. Nothing is ever what it seems. Naci, has a terrible background that would make anyone cruel, but instead it makes here strong and dovated to the safety of her sister. She would do anything for her…

A number of previous reviews say that this book had them hooked from the start. From just the prologue even!

If this is not the case for you, please do not be deterred!

I actually felt that this book was slow to start. Most likely because her origin story is so depressing. However, I stuck with it and I’m so glad I did because the middle and ending of the story for me were the most enthralling parts.

The FMC experiences hurt & betrayal by both family and loved ones, but finds herself in a new found family. Where she learns her true origins, and become who she was meant to be.

There are also some fun Easter eggs throughout the story if you can spot them. Overall great read that lived up to the hype.

6 stars all freaking dayyyyy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an ARC from the Author

So my favorite fantasy series of all time is TOG and this was TOG vibes all day, there will be some who say it’s too similar but I think it had the perfect amount of differences to make it its own! Please please give me book 2 soon because I need to know what happens.

Naci gives Aelin mixed with oleander from the bonds that tie which is another series I was absolutely feral for. I am so invested in the characters and storyline of this book I am purchasing my physical copy ASAP.

If you want throne of glass mixed with the bonds that tie (minus the why choose/reverse harem) this is the most perfect amazing book ❤️❤️❤️❤️

“Maybe I, too, was a rebel at heart.”

This was a really great debut! Once I saw “Shadow Mommy” & “Morally Grey FMC” and some of the listed tropes, I said “SIGN ME UPPPPP”.

Death of a Mortal follows Naci, living in an abusive household with her father, and two half sisters. Naci has only known cruelty within her household, and the cruelty of the Fae over the Mortals. Naci’s character is very complex but her character building was some of the best I’ve read. This story emphasized her true strength and resilience. There are ✨two✨love interests, one I was absolutely feral for when he showed up, he he. We also have some amazing side characters that I also fell in love with, my girl Aerie, I’m looking at you! This book doesn’t end on a crazy cliff hanger, but I can definitely tell it’s going to get better and better as the series goes!

ARC Review -

This was amazing, I love every second of it. The world building is phenomenal and I like the characters. The ending surprised me because who would have that they were going after the wrong villain. I can't wait for book two to see what happens and who would triumph in the end.

“𝓜𝓪𝔂𝓫𝓮 𝓘, 𝓽𝓸𝓸, 𝔀𝓪𝓼 𝓪 𝓻𝓮𝓫𝓮𝓵 𝓪𝓽 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓽.”

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5
SPICE: 🌶️ 1/5

Apparently I am having the most chaotic mood-reader era of my life.

One minute:

🔪 Mafia.

Next:

🏒 Hockey.

Then:

✨ Romantasy.

And now TikTok keeps feeding me wolf-shifter vertical shorts like it’s conducting some kind of psychological experiment.

👀

I’M INTRIGUED.

Who even am I anymore?

😂

Romantasy is usually VERY hit or miss for me.

It has to grab me.

I need stakes.

Danger.

Politics.

Betrayal.

Characters I actually care about.

And preferably at least one broody, dangerous man lurking somewhere in the background looking emotionally unavailable.

You know.

Fantasy enrichment.

😂

So when Death of a Mortal promised me Throne of Glass energy mixed with rebellion, political unrest, fae, magic and impossible choices?

Okay.

You have my attention.

And THIS?

This was much closer to the kind of romantasy that keeps me invested.

Naci Corren is nineteen, mortal, and living in a world ruled by magic where mortals are treated as lesser.

Her entire life has been survival.

Cruel father.

Hostile world.

Fae prejudice.

A family situation that already had me wanting to personally intervene.

Then a magical attack puts her youngest sister, Nella, in danger.

And Naci says:

Fuck this. We’re leaving.

👏🏻

Immediately loved that.

Because Naci’s relationship with Nella was one of my favorite parts of the entire book.

She will do ANYTHING for that girl.

Protect her.

Fight for her.

Run across the world for her.

Throw herself into danger for her.

That sister bond gave Naci’s choices emotional weight from the beginning.

And after the family she was born into?

Watching her slowly find people who choose her back?

🥹

FOUND FAMILY GOT ME AGAIN.

Rude.

😂

Naci and Nella set out looking for Naci’s mother, who Naci only really remembers through dreams and knows is connected to the rebellion.

Naturally, their search takes them directly toward the fae king’s capital.

Because apparently in fantasy novels, when you run from danger you are legally required to accidentally sprint directly into a much larger political crisis.

😂

And from there?

Things get MESSY.

Secrets.

Rebellion.

Political unrest.

Magic.

Hidden identities.

Castle intrigue.

Betrayal.

Shape-shifting.

Prophecy.

A very suspicious amount of attractive fae men.

Now we’re talking.

😂

One thing I appreciated immediately was that this story actually MOVES.

There is world-building, obviously, but I never felt like I had enrolled in a twelve-week history course just to understand what was happening.

THANK YOU.

Because fantasy can lose me when I’m 80 pages in and still learning the agricultural trade routes of a kingdom I don’t care about.

😭

Give me enough lore to make the world feel real…

then PLEASE let somebody do something.

And this book does.

Naci’s journey constantly pushes her deeper into a world she thought she understood.

She has spent her life believing the fae are cruel and dangerous.

And honestly?

Considering what she’s experienced, I can’t blame her.

But once she’s outside the limited world she grew up in, everything becomes more complicated.

Maybe the truth isn’t as simple as:

Fae bad. Mortals good.

Maybe history has been manipulated.

Maybe people aren’t exactly who she thinks they are.

Maybe she isn’t either.

👀

And THAT is where the story really hooked me.

Because there is clearly something going on with Naci.

Something about her identity.

Her birth.

The prophecy.

Her connection to all of this.

You know that feeling in fantasy where everyone is acting normal but you’re sitting there like:

This girl is absolutely not just some random mortal.

😂

Yeah.

That.

And I really liked Naci as an FMC.

She’s angry.

She’s impulsive.

Protective.

Bold.

Grieving.

Sometimes reckless.

Sometimes she makes choices that are frustrating.

But honestly?

GOOD.

Let women in fantasy be messy.

👏🏻

I don’t need a nineteen-year-old girl who’s been abused, oppressed and thrown into a war to suddenly make flawless strategic decisions.

That would be ridiculous.

Naci feels things BIG.

Rage.

Loss.

Fear.

Love.

Anger.

And watching her learn that those emotions don’t make her weak or bad was one of the strongest parts of her arc.

There were moments that gave me a little bit of that Nesta-style:

I have so much rage inside me that I don’t know what to do with it.

energy.

And you know what?

I support women’s rights.

I also support women’s wrongs.

😂

Let her be furious.

Her world has given her plenty to be furious about.

And instead of making her darker emotions something she has to erase, the story lets her learn how to use them.

That worked for me.

Then there’s the found family.

🥹

Drayce.

Arie.

Bramick.

Kellan.

Watching these relationships form around Naci after everything she’s survived was SO satisfying.

She has spent so much of her life believing she has to survive everything alone.

Then suddenly there are people saying:

No. We’re here.

😭

Disgusting.

I hate feelings.

More please.

😂

And speaking of important characters—

NOXIE.

🐦‍⬛

THE CROW.

The star.

The icon.

The moment.

😂

Forget the prophecy.

Forget the kingdom.

Forget the political rebellion.

I would read approximately 400 additional pages about Noxie committing bird-related nonsense.

I loved him.

Give me an animal familiar with personality and I become emotionally compromised immediately.

Apparently my weaknesses now include:

Morally gray men.

Hockey players.

Mafia bosses.

And crows.

Great.

😂

Now.

Let’s discuss the men.

Because obviously we need to.

👀

Varyn?

FUCK VARYN.

Respectfully.

Actually…

No.

Not respectfully.

😂

I have NOTES.

And then we have Drayce.

Broody.

Moody.

Warrior energy.

Possibly dangerous.

Emotionally complicated.

👁️👄👁️

Hello, sir.

There you are.

My tracking system remains fully functional in fae territory.

😂

TEAM DRAYCE.

I’m planting my flag early.

No appeals at this time.

And now we’ve got SHAPE-SHIFTING PRINCES in the mix too?!

🐺

Okay.

So maybe TikTok has been performing targeted advertising directly into my brain.

Because suddenly I’m sitting here like:

Wolf shifters, you say?

👀

Interesting.

For academic purposes, obviously.

😂

The magic system was another thing I enjoyed.

Elemental magic.

Darker abilities.

Different fae powers.

Shape shifting.

Prophecy.

There was enough variety to make the world feel big without making me constantly stop and consult a fantasy encyclopedia.

And the political side worked too.

There’s real tension between mortals and fae.

Oppression.

Rebellion.

Power struggles.

Questions about who actually deserves loyalty.

And the story keeps showing that neither side is as simple as Naci originally believes.

👏🏻

That’s what I want from political fantasy.

Don’t give me cartoon villains and perfect heroes.

Make everyone complicated.

Make choices hurt.

Make me question who I’m rooting for.

And there is definitely betrayal here.

😐

I won’t say much.

But certain people?

YOUR NAMES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO A LIST.

😂

Then we get to the ending.

Excuse me?

EXCUSE ME?!

😳

This ending really said:

Oh, you were enjoying yourself?

That’s cute.

SUFFER.

😂

I had an inkling about part of the twist, but even expecting something didn’t make the payoff any less effective.

And suddenly everything felt much bigger.

More dangerous.

More impossible.

By the end, I was genuinely sitting there thinking:

Okay…how the FUCK are they getting out of this?

Which is exactly what book one in a fantasy series should do.

Make me NEED answers.

This is the first book in a four-book series, and it absolutely feels like we’ve only scratched the surface.

There are characters I still want to understand better.

Magic I want explained.

Relationships I want developed.

Political messes I need resolved.

And several people who need consequences.

😈

Especially consequences.

Why four stars instead of five?

I really enjoyed this.

It kept me engaged.

The characters had emotional depth.

The found family hit.

The world felt interesting.

And the ending absolutely did its job.

But I’m not at the completely feral, cancel-my-plans, this-series-now-owns-my-personality level yet.

Yet.

👀

And honestly?

For romantasy, four stars from me is a WIN.

Because this genre has to WORK for my attention.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

✨ Dark romantasy
🧚 Fae world
⚔️ Mortal rebellion
👑 Royal politics
🔥 Slow-burn romance
🐺 Shape-shifting princes
✨ Elemental magic
🖤 Dark magic
⚔️ Warrior MMC energy
👀 Broody man alert
🐦‍⬛ Animal familiar
💕 Found family
👭 Strong sister bond
🏰 Castle intrigue
🚪 Secret passages
🔮 Prophecy
🔥 Feminine rage
💔 Betrayal
⚔️ High stakes
😱 Major twists
🖤 Morally complicated characters

FOUR “APPARENTLY MY RED-FLAG RADAR NOW WORKS ON FAE AND WOLF SHIFTERS TOO” STARS.

😂

I don’t know what is happening to my reading personality right now.

I’m everywhere.

Mafia men?

Yes.

Hockey players?

Obviously.

Fae warriors?

Apparently.

Shape-shifting princes?

👀 Let’s not rule anything out.

My Kindle currently looks like five different people share the same account.

But maybe that’s the fun of being a mood reader.

Sometimes I want emotional stability and cute dogs.

Sometimes I want an Irish Mafia man threatening murder.

And apparently sometimes I want rebellion, magic, prophecy and a broody fae warrior standing dramatically in the distance.

RANGE.

😂

And if this wolf shifter curiosity keeps developing?

No one speak to me.

I blame TikTok.

Completely.

I had nothing to do with this.

🐺👀

Anyway.

Team Drayce.

Fuck Varyn.

Noxie deserves his own book.

And after that ending?

Yeah.

I’m continuing.

The fae have successfully retained my attention.

For now.

Review of advance copy received from Author

** Thank you so much for the author and their team for allowing me to serve as an ARC reader **

Overall this is a strong debut novel that incorporates tied and true fantasy themes and tropes while bringing a unique story to life. If you like stories such as From Blood and Ash and Rites of a Starling, I think you'll like this book. It definitely gave me that vibes while reading it -- and I love those books so I enjoyed it very much.

The plot: Naci is a human born in a world where fae are superior in every way compared to humans -- in society, in magic, in strength, etc. She lives in a world where her father is an abusive drunk, her half-sister is a menace towards her, and her only solace is her little half-sister Nelly. Naci dreams of running away with Nelly and finding out what happened to her mom and why her mom abandoned her to go to the rebellion.

Eventually, she and Nelly escape to the capital and find their way into the castle, working as maids. Naci catches the eye of the handsome prince, but is eventually heartbroken and betrayed. It isn't until the moment of the betrayal that the book picks up and plot starts unwinding. That was around 41% into the book.

My weighted score:
📖 Storyline / Plot 15% 4: Good -- the overall storyline is good and I enjoyed the rebellion plot and following the team.
✍️ Prose & Writing Style 15% 4: Good -- for being 1st person POV I really enjoyed it and I did not find Naci's character and internal dialogue to be draining.
💕 Romance Chemistry 15% 3: Solid -- I think for me, there could've been a strong segway into Naci's relationship and feelings with Dray because I honestly thought she had more chemistry with the Prince than with Dray. I mean, I saw glimpses of potential for my buy-in into their relationship it just didn't get there. I know it was a slow burn but then wasn't (?) because they had kind of dramatically before their plan, but I just didn't feel the tension/heat build up for me.
🌍 World-Building 15% 3: Solid -- I a little superficial since it was fantasy heavy there were some elements that didn't flow well for me and I think it will naturally get better with Book 2.
🎭 Character Development 10% 4: Good -- I really enjoyed everyone's character and the found family and banter. It was one of my favorite parts of the book.
⚡ Pacing & Structure 10% 3: Solid -- The pacing felt a little bit off especially at the beginning of the book and something in the second half when the next chapter would be ""months later"" but I didn't feel like I knew the lore and story enough to be engaged with a ""months"" later segment.
😮 Emotional Impact 20% 4: Good -- Overall the last 30% or so picks up a lot and I did get emotionally invested in their heist and their plans to kill the king. I think I saw the queen's increased role coming from the beginning, but I still enjoyed certain plot twists and parts of the ending of book 1.

Overall 3.6/5 stars -- so 4 stars. Solid debut book, looking forward to continuing to book 2!

This book first spiked my interest when by a random chance of luck popped up on my IG feed and after reading the tropes and synopsis of the book I knew it was for me even though the author was new and unknown to me.

For a debut novel, Death of a Mortal has everything I love about a great Romantasy book. We have phenomenal world building, political intrigue, found family that was done to perfection, creature bonding, a unique and refreshing magic system, characters you want to befriend and protect from the villians, and the right amount of spice for the first book in a series.

I loved everything about this book, from the fable style beginning to the mind-blowing end. But, M.L. Godwyn, you did me dirty with that Prince. Eventhough it seemed kind of early after knowing what our FMC Naci has had to go through at the start of her journey, you built my hopes up for her. For once, something positive was going to begin for Naci. But no, you just had to come in and rip that hope away. Then you followed that betrayal up with the Mom Bomb. However, if I’m being honest with myself I already had an inkling that something was about to go down because wolf boy was acting too sketchy.

After surviving that whole situation the shock value didn't stop there. Oh no, you had to flay me alive with what came next. You had me all up in my feelings. I was anger, devastated and completely heartbroken. Witnessing Naci struggle with her emotions while trying to figure out how she was going to survive made her journey more significant.

What saved me from all the heartbreak was Noxie and the relationship between him and Naci. I absolutely adore him. His sarcasm is both humorous and charismatic. Without him this story would not have been the same. There connection is one of my favorite takes from the whole book and that led to my second favorite, found family.

After meeting the members of the rebellion and getting to observe how they stand by Naci for all her flaws as well as her new discovered strengths I can say that I like Drayce more than the prince for Naci's love interest.

As the story continues I had some thoughts about where this tale was going to end but sweet merciful Zeus the last couple chapters before the end had me gasping like a fish out of water. That twist was diabolical and opens up so many more unknowns waiting to be discovered and I'm feral for it. I will be going stir crazy waiting for book 2 to see where the journey takes us next.

Thank you M.L. Godwyn for gifting me the opportunity to experience this world.

I really loved this dark romantasy. This has so many things that I love; political intrigue, found family, unique magic, betrayals, high stakes, and one seriously badass FMC. I couldn't put it down.

The world-building was incredible—rich and immersive without ever feeling overwhelming. I loved the mix of fae, rebellion, betrayals, and nonstop twists. Every chapter gave me another reason to keep reading, and I truly never knew who to trust.

Naci was such an easy FMC to root for. She's fierce, protective, and beautifully flawed. She went through trauma and healing and loved watching her growth. And when that feminine rage finally came? Yes!! It was everything I wanted and more.

I loved The found family. Her bonded crow Noxie was my fav by far! And the romance? This had not one, but two love interests. The chemistry and banter with both was SO GOOD, and I was living for every moment. The charming flirt had me smiling, but the broody warrior? Yeah...LOVE HIM!

This had me feeling all of the emotions. It made me laugh, stressed, ripped my heart out, and the twists had my jaw to the floor. Especially that last one?? Wow! Looking forward to book 2!

OH. MY. FREAKING. GODWYN. 😭🖤🐦‍⬛

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WHAT. A. FREAKING. BOOK.

I finished Death of a Mortal and immediately wanted to go back to the prologue because EXCUSE ME?! The way that prologue connects to the ENTIRE story once you know what you know?! 🤯

M.L. Godwyn absolutely KNEW what she was doing.

The character building.
The world building.
The suspense.
The tiny little breadcrumbs casually dropped along the way that you don’t fully appreciate until suddenly you’re like—

👁️👄👁️

WAIT.

And THAT is what I loved so much about this book. The hints are there. She’s giving them to you. But she never smacks you over the head with them. Instead, she slowly pulls you deeper and deeper into Naci’s world until at some point you realize…

WE ARE NACI.

We know what she knows.
We question what she questions.
We trust who she trusts.
We’re suspicious when she’s suspicious.

And meanwhile I’m over here trying to solve everything like I have ANY BUSINESS being involved. 😂

AND NOXIE. 🐦‍⬛🖤

I freaking LOVE NOXIE.

Crows are ridiculously intelligent creatures, so giving Naci this clever little crow companion was PERFECTION. Noxie isn’t just some cute little animal thrown into the story either. There’s personality there. There’s purpose. There’s CONNECTION. And I was absolutely here for every second of it.

But what really got me was the beauty within these characters. Not just physical beauty—the complexity of them. The relationships. The layers. The things they carry. The things they DON’T say. 👀

This book somehow balances gorgeous world building with suspense and actual STORY without drowning you in information, and that is HARD to do.

I was intrigued.
I was suspicious.
I was emotionally invested.
I was collecting clues like a feral little romantasy detective.
I WAS HAVING A GREAT TIME. 😂

And then there’s Drayce.

ahem.

I heart Drayce. 🖤

That’s it.

That’s the review.

Actually no it’s not because I apparently have 847 more feelings about this book, but nobody asked for my dissertation.

M.L. Godwyn, you beautiful menace.

WHAT. A. FREAKING. BOOK. 🐦‍⬛🌹💀🖤

Now excuse me while I stare into the distance thinking about everything I just read and all those little hints I KNOW are going to matter later.

Because apparently I live here now. 😭😂

This book was provided to me as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author for this opportunity!

3.5 ⭐️

Was so close to but couldn't quite reach a 4 star rating for me!

This read was honestly pretty good! We follow a mortal named Naci who grabs her sister and runs from her abusive home to find her missing mother only to find herself neck deep in a fae versus human political strife as well as discovering that her own identity isn't what it seems.

In the beginning of the story our heroine is badly scarred by her lightning wielding sister and I really loved that the author left her "imperfect". In a world full of "And then she became fae and otherworldly gorgeous", it was so refreshing to see a fmc featured that wasn't flawless. In addition, Naci is a gritty, "holds-her-own" fmc. Despite everything she's endured, she manages to be both strong and vulnerable - showing both a deep well of love for others but using that to find strength. Finding that balance of soft and strong, and making it a believable character is difficult and I feel like the author did a great job succeeding here.

Although there are many reasons to praise this book, there were a few things that stopped me from pushing it to a full 4 or 5 star read.

Naci's younger sister should not have existed. She was supposed to be Naci's "why" but her character had the personality of cardboard so when tragedy struck I had zero response to it. As someone with a sister with whom I am extremely close, I feel like I should have had a flicker of response but I didn't. Nella instead is a dull character with no dimension who is referred to as "little lamb" despite being a teenager and is frequently infantilized by Naci, and treated as if she cannot possibly take care of herself. When something terrible happens, it felt like a relief to me.

In addition to Nella's story, there was just SOMETHING that stopped me from fully immersing in this book (Very helpful right? The problem is *the vibes*) Truthfully I'm not entirely sure what the issue is. I found myself either devouring pages or literally checking to see how close I was to being done. If someone else can put a finger on the pulse of the "why" please comment and help me out 🤣

There is one other thing that stopped this from being a 4 or 5 star read for me and I will only briefly mention it because this is probably the most nit-picky issue I have. In dialogue, they say each other's names a LOT. Even in a 2 way conversation where we know exactly who is speaking, they refer to each other by name. As a result, it makes a lot of the dialogue where this is taking place feel inauthentic - almost like a bad play.

Despite it's quirks, I did overall enjoy this read and I think that we're only seeing the beginning of what Naci is capable of. I do recommend this book for those that love romantasy or a flawed but strong fmc. I'm definitely rooting for our girl!

update: it is the next day and i am still thinking about this book. i found it strange that i didn’t cry reading this when the emotional trauma devastated me. well, it finally hit me. i carried this unsettling feeling in my chest and my heart felt uneasy thinking about naci and the information that was revealed at the end. i’m thinking about cassius and varyn because now maybe things aren’t as they seem. naci feels like a friend to me and the weight of everything she’s been through is affecting me today. my husband had to hug and comfort me as i cried about this damn book. i am so honored i got to receive and read this arc, it’s a new favorite. ❤️

it’s 2:53 am and I just finished this book about 20 minutes ago and let me tell you…my emotional state is not good. your heart will be reeling by the end of this book. miss godwyn, you got me good with this one, girl.

first off…i adore naci and nella and noxie. the way everything from the beginning revealed itself…perfection. because every time i predicted what i thought was going to happen… was wrong. don’t try to guess, you won’t figure it out. from naci’s “uniqueness,” to her bond to noxie, to the prince’s behavior, to her mother’s disappearance, to the king’s wickedness…just enjoy the freaking ride. naci’s story is a sad one, and betrayal makes her doubt everyone including herself. from the first chapter you will feel anger and injustice. but she is strong and fierce and loyal and her journey of finding and learning herself is truly remarkable.

i’m kind of at a loss for words, i feel phantom squeezes on my heart while reflecting the ending. it’s quite sad to me, but on the bright side i know it isn’t over yet, it can’t be. there’s too much unfinished business. i look forward to the next book. impatiently waiting, fyi lol.

thank you to m. l. godwyn for an arc of this book. you’ve accomplished what you wanted out of this. well done and congratulations.

From page one, this book had me in a full-blown hostage situation. Every chapter ended with, “Okay… just one more,” until suddenly it was way past my bedtime and I regretted nothing.

The prologue immediately hooked me, and the story never let up. The world-building is easy to follow: an evil Fae king wants to wipe out the mortals, a rebellion is brewing, and absolutely no one can be trusted. Again pretty easy to follow.

Naci Corren quickly became my favorite character. She’s messy, impulsive, fiercely protective, and impossible not to root for. After growing up with an abusive father and cruel half-sister, all she wants is to escape with her younger sister, Nelle. Of course, nothing goes according to plan. Every turn uncovers another secret, betrayal, or an emotional gut punch. This book kept me guessing the entire time.

The love interests? There’s not one but two! Chef’s kiss. They’re all completely different, making it impossible not to pick favorites. Mine is the deliciously moody, broody MMC. The chemistry is a thick as cake and the romance had me kicking my feet and grinning like an idiot.

And Noxie? That’s all I’m saying… except I would also like one, please.

Overall, this is one of my favorite reads of the year. It wrecked my emotions, left me staring into space after the final page, and now I’m impatiently waiting for book two. It was an absolute honor to ARC read for M.L. Godwyn. Congratulations on an incredible debut—you’ve officially earned a spot on my auto-buy author list!

Favorite Quote
“ I accept that there is a darkness within me. The darkness came from caring. It came from the pain of losing, but it proves that I loved. It is a part of me as much as the good side, and I want my light and dark, my good and bad, to exist together. Because it makes me who I am, and I accept who that is, darkness and all… So I choose my vey form. I choose my shadows”

Highly recommend that you put this on your TBR!

ARC provided by author in exhange for an honest review, thank you!

This book pulled me in with interest from page 1. And by the end of chapter one I was already emotionally involved with two characters, Naci and Nella.

I found myself gasping and laughing and yelling at this book as I continued to read it. Despite the world being gloomy and dark, there were spots of light between Nella and Naci, Noxie, an others. It was almost enlightening to watch Naci, who I had to remind myself was just 19 at the books start, navigate this world and attempt to achieve her goals. I found myself rooting for her the whole time.

The story had a good pace and remained engaging as I read. Sometimes things happened conveniently, which didn't feel unnatural or forced, but it was something I noticed. But as I read more and more of the story I got sucked in so fast that I actively had to stop myself from reading and pace myself. This author writes suspense so well, I was on the edge of my seat and nearly sick to my stomach (in the best way possible) where you know something is coming and there's nothing you can do to stop it, multiple times throughout this book. This author does this very well.

This book also broke my heart. It didn't matter that I felt it coming. I had to take time to cry and sulk. The story had consequences that were real, emotions that packed a punch, characters that felt unique on the page, and deep nuance that I think we're only beginning to understand. The story also made me laugh with my whole stomach, smile with pride, and even get angry with the characters along with so many other emotions.

I loved this book and this found family. Naci, Drayce, Bramick, Aerie, they have all thoroughly buried themselves into my heart SO quickly. I'll be gutted if anything happens to any of them. I need book 2 and will absolutely read it as soon as it comes out. This was amazing.

*Received an advanced reader copy for an honest review. One amazing ride!

Some books have a prologue, and some do not. What I will say is that this prologue was one of the best ones I have read. Why did I like it so much? It made me feel like I had a seat at the table just watching siblings talk, yet they were Gods and then seeing a mortal feeling coming from an immortal being was so fresh. The willingness to give up something so big for that immense feeling and for people she felt this way towards made being mortal not insignificant. Peregria-Goddess of Curiosity had more strength and heart than some of her more obvious siblings did. She dared and she did. Love that.

The FMC, Naci, really had a horrible early life. No-one in her corner except her half-sister, Nella, which she protected without fail. Naci’s growth throughout this book was great. Her mother left when she was young, and so did Nella’s mother. They bonded through their cruel existence of a home life that was a result of their father and other half-sister. As they flee away from this life towards an unknown one, they choose the lesser evil and run searching for Naci’s mother. Facing injuries, hunger, magical creatures, things that no longer make sense and go against what they knew- they travel to the capital. The most dangerous place they could go with them being mortals is to a place where Fae is upper society and mortals can be enslaved. Home to the cruel King Caedryn and home to possibly where her mother may be. It is a risk they both decide to take.

This is great for fans of Cadence of the Fallen series and Metal Slinger.

3.25-3.5⭐️

Let me start with the fact that I binged this book on a 9hr flight and that it’s completely addictive and fast paced. Now, on to the review.

We follow Ignacia or Naci a mortal who lives in a world where mortals are treated as lessers and the fae control them down to the rations of food they’re given. Naci and her younger sister Nella escape the house where they’re hated and abused by their father and embark on a journey towards freedom. But what happens when they’re caught in the hands of the tyrant who rules the country?

The writing and world building are written pretty straight forward and are easy to follow. The characters arcs are well written and I loved reading about her development from being afraid of others to making people fear her (baddie).

Now, while I did enjoy the story and fell in love with the found family aspects and the overall plot of rebellion and politics, I can’t say I enjoyed the romance and often saw myself skipping over the spicy scenes. Let me explain.

The FMC is very easily enthralled by the men she meets throughout her journey and her feelings escalate quickly without us really being told why and how she developed her feelings. Like miss girl was saying “ILY” 25% in, and that to me made me feel uninterested in their story. She does go on to have a second (or third?) love interest and it felt the same way where it was too insta love.

In ways it did resemble the “Shatter Me” and “Red Queen” books with how the storyline carried out and niche elements such as light magic warping/protecting the rebellion camp, but not to the point where it felt like it was HEAVILY influenced.

Anyways bestie, if you like found family, fae vs mortal, elemental magic, a shadow mommy, and rebellion/politics this one might be for you!

I received an advance review copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

❤️ World Building: I absolutely loved the world building, from the places we see, to the magic system some people get to use, it was all fabulous! There were some new and unique aspects to the magic/shifter elements that I have seen before.

❤️ The Characters: The Characters were so well written! No unnecessary miscommunications, none of the FMC being always right and not listening to the advice of others...even if it takes her a bit to come around. Drayce was just perfect, always quietly waiting, always watching, always protecting, but always behind the scene. The side characters really stood out, I absolutely love a great female friendship.

❤️ The Story: The story was great. There are so many hidden secrets going on, so many surprises, and while it didn’t end on a huge cliffhanger (thank you), you can tell there is so much more to come in the next book!

❤️‍🔥Overall: I highly recommend this book, it kept me so engaged!

Roc Eagle fact Inspired by Bernitha: The Roc is a mythical bird said to be so enormous it could pick up an adult elephant in its talons. Most mythologists believe the mystical bird of prey to be of Arabian or Persian origin, although some place the roc’s origin in India or China. According to the legend, it stood perhaps as much as 20 feet (~6 meters) tall with a wingspan of up to 43 feet (~13 meters).

Thank you M.L Godwyn and team for the opportunity to be an early reader. Below is my honest review of Death of Mortals.

Death of Mortals had an interesting premise, a dark magical atmosphere, and several characters I genuinely wanted to know more about. Naci’s journey is filled with grief, betrayal, dangerous magic, rebellion, and very few moments where she is allowed to feel safe.

I liked many of the supporting characters (Aerie, Noxi, Bramick) especially Drayce, but I often felt as though the story was holding back important pieces of their histories and motivations. Drayce, in particular, seemed like he had so much more depth waiting to be explored. Several relationships and plot threads also left me with more questions than answers.

The pacing was one of my biggest struggles. Much of the book builds slowly, but the final chapters bring several major revelations and confrontations together very quickly. The ending felt rushed when many of those moments could have used more time to breathe and develop.

There is also a constant thread of betrayal and emotional pain throughout Naci’s story. While that created tension, the repeated abuse and heartbreak became overwhelming because the quieter moments of connection and peace were so brief.

My other major disappointment was the lack of diversity. In a fantasy world filled with fae, magic, creatures, and rebellion, the limited representation throughout the book was frustrating and difficult for me to overlook.

Ultimately, I am still unsure how I feel about Death of Mortals. I enjoyed the concept and several of the characters, but the pacing, unanswered questions, underdeveloped relationships, and lack of diversity kept the story from fully connecting with me.

This book left me gutted, but hopeful by the end. I was hooked from the very first page and had a hard time putting this one down. To me, this was a 5⭐️ read.

This book made me feel like I was on a journey, both full of events and self discovery. I loved the banter, but it also made me cry too. So much happened, but I didn’t feel like it was lagging to me. The ending… just wow. There are so many things I am curious about now, and book 2 can’t come fast enough.

The world-building was done so well, you could imaging the towns, the forests, some dark and cruel, while some were a little more warm and hopeful. You got a good look at what was happening in the world between the mortals and fae as well as what was at stake. I loved the magic, the way you could easily imagine it and all the types. Suddenly storm magic might be one of my favorite types of magic. 🤭

Noxie may be one of my favorite familiars!! There were characters that I absolutely loved and enjoyed, and some that were downright evil. At the end there are even a couple that I am suddenly on the fence about. I know which MMC I am leaning towards, but I’m wondering if that will change in book 2. Naci, the FMC, I loved watching her grow and discover herself despite everything she went through.

This book had some of my favorites:

🖤 Enemies to Lovers
🩷 Found Family
🖤 Gods and Prophecies
🩷 Fae, Mortals, Shifters, Familiars
🖤 Unique Magic System
🩷 High Political Stakes

I definitely recommend adding this book to your TBR and reading it. This is one of those stories that you will be thinking about for a while.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kindle Unlimited: ✅ Yes
Recommend to my Book Bestie: Absolutely!

𝙳𝚎𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 : For the ones still searching for their light in the darkness—keep fighting.
And of course, for my mom, my guiding star, who inspires me and Naci every day.
Also for my favorite Mexican restaurant back home that let me sit for hours on end at their bar, writing the magic you’re about to read… This is where Naci’s story was born, and I think that would make her so happy.

𝚃𝚛𝚘𝚙𝚎𝚜 : shadow mommy | morally grey FMC | found family | gods + prophecies | unique magic | shifters

𝙵𝚒𝚛𝚜𝚝 𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 : Peregria sat, observing as always, in the middle of the long table leaden with decadent food and surrounded by her celestial siblings.

𝙾𝚞𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝 𝚀𝚞𝚘𝚝𝚎 : Your fire burns too damned bright for your shadows to consume you.

𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗯 : this book had no business being that good. Seriously. I was addicted.

Naci - you are a badass. I mean, that’s really all that can be said. I kind of love her. Add in her familiar, and I’m SOOOOLD.

Naci and, her sister, Nella are growing up in an awful situation. Their father hates them. They’re poor. & they’re without magic. Although, Naci has always felt a little different. There’s a war coming. Those without magic are losing. They’re treated as scum - some of them are even made into slaves with collars.

Naci wants more for herself and sister. So, she gets her out of their situation and into the castle. Is that changing one bad circumstance for another?

A prince. A queen. An evil king. Deceit. Lust. Lies. Traps. Dungeons.

A rebellion? Who doesn’t want to overthrow an evil king? Find the truth about their parents. Find love. Find a family. But a journey is rarely as easy as it seems.

If you’re craving a fantasy that throws you straight into a world of ruthless fae, dangerous prophecies, political rebellion, and slow-burning romance, Death of a Mortal absolutely delivers.

Naci is the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for. She’s fierce, resilient, and driven by love for her sister, even when the world gives her every reason to become a villain. Watching her journey from survival to discovering the darkness growing inside her was one of my favorite parts of the story.

The world-building is rich without feeling overwhelming, and the plot never slows down. Every chapter seemed to reveal another secret, another betrayal, or another reason to question who could actually be trusted. I loved the balance between high-stakes action, emotional moments, and political intrigue.

And can we talk about the men? The charming flirt had me grinning, while the broody warrior had me completely hooked. The romantic tension is deliciously slow, leaving you desperate for more.

The ending? Absolutely brutal in the best way. It left me staring at the page wondering how I’m supposed to wait for the next book.

If you love:
🖤 Morally gray characters
🖤 Fae politics and rebellion
🖤 Powerful heroines
🖤 Slow-burn romance
🖤 Prophecies and hidden powers
🖤 High-stakes fantasy with emotional punches

…then Death of a Mortal deserves a spot on your TBR immediately.

This series is off to an incredible start, and I cannot wait to see where Naci’s story goes next.

I had the privilege of receiving the ARC of Death of a Mortal. This book had all the elements and tropes I love!

Naci Corren has lived a hard life. Her mother left the family to join the mortal rebellion when she was an infant and her father, Cassius, had grown bitter and abusive to her and younger sister Nella. Naci lives among the mortals in the country of Caelia. Mortals are treated as slaves and are deeply oppressed by King Caedryn of Ashenholt. Naci has “a cold, dark rage” building inside of her. She knows she needs to take Nella away from Cassius and confront the King. Naci has heard rumors of the mortal rebellion being alive and well and wants to find the rebels and hopefully her mother.

I was immediately invested in this story and I couldn’t wait to keep reading. About halfway through the book, a shocking turn of events happens. There is betrayal, a bold move by the rebellion and a heartbreaking loss for Naci. The dungeon scenes in the aftermath of this turn of events were so heartbreaking. The author did such a fantastic job of making the reader feel every bit of the grief, rage and helplessness that Naci felt. It was so well-written.

As the story moves on, Naci is realizing her powers and wants to learn more about them. Drayce, the leader of the rebellion, is very protective of Naci and the sparks fly when they are near each other.

At the end of this book we learn how the prophecy from the Prologue ties into the cliffhanger ending. I will eagerly await the next book in the series!

I loved this book so much!! I’ve been waiting for a story that completely captures my attention and makes me excited to keep reading, and this one absolutely delivered!

I loved the way this book explores the complicated relationship between fae and humans. In this realm the two exist alongside each other but are far from equal, and it makes for a whirlwind of events.

This book pulled me in from the start. The magic system, the secrets waiting to be uncovered, and the characters’ journeys made it impossible not to get emotionally invested. There’s found family, hidden powers, rebellion, an underdog you can’t help but root for, a slow-burn romance, two love interests, and only one horse.

It’s definitely the kind of story that takes you through every emotion too! There are moments that will absolutely gut you, moments where the characters’ wit will have your sides hurting from laughing, and plenty of moments where you’ll be questioning who you can trust.

The writing makes you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters, experiencing every discovery, heartbreak, and victory with them.

Watching the story unfold and seeing the pieces slowly come together gave me life, y’all! And when the prophecy finally enters the picture, it adds an entirely new layer of stakes and uncertainty.

If you love fantasy with magic, mystery, complicated characters, lovable familiars, and a story that keeps you turning pages and emotionally devastate you in the best way, I cannot recommend this one enough!!! ✨
