“My Meth” by Elara Voss is not a book you might expect. There’s no sweet in it. It does start off innocent enough. But quickly turns hard hitting, obsessive, not letting up. A dark, dark dramatic thriller. With the MFC being a representative of Central Legal Aid Clinic and our MMC a Psychiatrist. And I loved it! Even though I wept for Mara and Trivian. For what could have been. And I was angry at Nolan’s complete coldness in what he did to such a good, trusting man. A man who had finally found happiness. I had to read this book as a thriller alone in my mind and not a romance. Even though there was love and intention between Mara and Trivian. And her true friends. This book is full of dark, psychological manipulation, twisted, manipulative, Intense, suspected suicide, murder, toxic, controlling, sexual, dramatic, crazily written, with trigger warning galore. So pay attention. It’s an amazingly written book pulling you in without consent. The spectrum of emotions to be experienced is off the chart. And the graphics throughout is as you would expect. They are also dark and are phenomenal! You will figure it out quickly when you realize Dr. Nolan basically conditioned Mara Vael before she even met him to need him and only him. Obsessively separating her mentally and physically from her friends and what she used to know and be. Mara still grieving her loss never saw his intentions for her coming. She thought he was there to help her heal over a loss. If she only knew the plans he had for her. Things he already had done, to bring her to him. The storyline is captivating and strong. The characters were all amazing with personalities defined and true. All I can say is, dim the light of your mind and step into the dark.
My Meth is a dark psychological mystery that focuses heavily on trauma, memory, and family abuse. The novel slowly uncovers the hidden truth behind the Whittaker family through therapy sessions and investigation, creating strong emotional tension throughout the story. While the pacing can feel slow at times, the book succeeds through its intense atmosphere, layered mystery, and emotionally complex characters.
Strength - The atmosphere is one of the novel’s strongest elements. The Whittaker house almost feels like a character itself, carrying the emotional weight of the family’s hidden past. Themes of repression, manipulation, grief, and silence are explored in a way that keeps the story emotionally heavy from beginning to end.
Weakness - The pacing can feel slow at times, especially in chapters focused on introspection and therapy conversations, so readers looking for a fast-paced thriller may struggle with it. However, for readers who enjoy psychological mysteries with strong emotional storytelling and layered character development, the slow-burn style works well.
Overall, My Meth is a haunting and emotionally charged novel that explores how buried trauma can shape a person’s entire life. It’s unsettling, thoughtful, and deeply focused on the psychology of its characters, making it a compelling read for fans of dark psychological fiction.
