George Vukelich sounds as good in print as does on his Wisconsin Public Radio show. He has a folksy, descriptive prose in these three-to-four page essays that is as easy to read as it is to listen to. He writes about the outdoors, geese, writers, fly fishermen, deer hunting, and much more. He believes in the ecology of the land ala Aldo Leopold who wrote Sand County Almanac. Vukelich is funny as are his alter egos Steady Eddy, Hugo Percy, Father Himmelsbach, Gene the bartender, and the good doctor. My favorite essay is "Mourning" about how scary bears are. Then one hunting season Gene shot a bear. The next day he was scared again by the bear's mate. Volume II and its predecessor Volume I are worth so much more than the money you will spend on them.
