Shadow Claim: A Possessive Shadow Monster Romance

Rate this book
I came to grieve in private. The thing that has lived in these walls a hundred years has other ideas.
My grandmother died in March. I have not unpacked her photos. I have not painted the kitchen. I have not, by any objective measure, processed the loss. What I have done is move into the cliff cottage on the Dunmore Coast, fire the old glassblowing studio, and start cracking jokes at the empty corners of a house the village calls haunted with a perfectly straight face.
The empty corner started talking back on the third night.

His name is Vesper. He has occupied the dark of Cairn House since before my great-great-grandfather laid the first stone. He has not had a body in more than a century. He has watched a hundred years of women come and go from this house, and not one of them ever looked back at him.

I look back the first time I walk through the door.

He is undone. He is reverent. He is terrified of his own want. So am I. The difference is, I have jokes. He has the entire architecture of the house — which means there is nowhere I am alone, and nowhere the dark is not paying attention.

A scorching paranormal romance with a shadow entity, creative anatomy, and a heroine who speaks to the dark.

Shadow entity, Hidden in plain sight, Forced proximity, Obsessive protector, Ancient being/mortal, Dark paranormal romance

This was good.

So this one was a pleasant surprise. Shadow Claim is a paranormal romance following Maeve Donovan, a woman who moves into her late grandmother's house after her passing, only to find that the house comes with a very unusual and very permanent resident. Vesper is a creature of shadows and darkness, and his presence in the house is apparently no secret to the town. The whole setup has this gorgeous gothic, hauntingly beautiful atmosphere to it that honestly pulled me in pretty quickly.
The writing style is where this book really shines. It's poetic and beautiful and stays that way consistently from start to finish, which is not always easy to pull off. The characters were also easy to connect with and genuinely easy to like, which made the reading experience quite enjoyable overall.
That said, a few things kept me from bumping this up to a full five stars. The pacing at the start is slow, which I could handle, but then it takes a pretty abrupt turn that felt a little jarring before eventually evening out nicely. The bigger issue for me though was the lack of backstory on both of our main characters. We don't get a whole lot of context on Maeve, who she is, what her life was like before, or why she might believably fall for a shadow creature. Vesper's story is touched on but not deeply explored either. The grandmother's house clearly holds some significance but that's also not very well explained. All of that missing context is what hurt the romance for me. The chemistry between Maeve and Vesper felt like it was missing something and I think it's because I didn't have enough foundation to fully invest in it.
Honestly my biggest complaint is that I just wanted more. This is a short story and I genuinely wish it had been at least a full length novel because the world and the concept deserved more room to breathe and develop.
Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely, especially if you're someone who loves gothic settings, paranormal romance, and beautifully written prose. Just go in knowing it's a short story and temper your expectations around the depth of the world building accordingly.
Four stars. Genuinely lovely writing let down slightly by rushed pacing and a lack of character backstory, but worth the read without a doubt

I really enjoyed this and was so excited to receive an ARC of this! This was my first time reading a true “monster” romance, and I feel it was a great way to start that category. I loved the development of both characters individually as well as the bond that you could see forming as they became more comfortable in each other’s presence. I liked the way the FMC was written as someone who started off a little scared of the dark and did little mind tricks with herself to convince herself there is nothing strange going on - very relatable. Then her strength and humor began to help her develop ways to cope with weird occurrences and eventually she became really open to a unique relationship. The way the characters were written was full of emotional growth. It was also so unique to have the “monster” start out as non-vocal and then slowly develop the ability to communicate- it made the story have even more emotional depth in my opinion. The dual POVs added to this as well, and was really effective. Overall, for such a short story, I really enjoyed how much feeling and content is packed into it!

Shadow Claim: A Possessive Shadow Monster Romance surprised me. When I downloaded it for free with Kindle Unlimited, I thought it was just going to be another romance novel with paranormal overtones. But, Wow. Grief can do strange things to people, and this story proves it. It makes us accept things we might not otherwise even indulge for a moment. If you enjoy a good romance or a good ghost story, this book is the best of both worlds.

Nice sprite romance

Its a cute romance between and analytical researcher and a spirit in an old home. Its cute. I dont find him to be to possessive though. And a little spicy. He wasn't scary though.
