Hmmmm
I honestly don’t know if I liked it or not. The premise is good. It’s kinda read as Third Person point of view. It was mostly focused on her internal thoughts but from farther back. It almost read like she’s on the spectrum. There wasn’t any real thoughts or feelings, just Observations, taking note of everything clinically and storing it away. There was use of words like Terrain, which was typically used as “when the Terrain is right”, like “when the time is right”. Took a min for me to understand the different words used in a clinical manner instead of the normal words. I was lost a few times. I’d rate this 3.5 stars if I could but since I can’t, I rounded up. It’s better than 3 stars for sure. I think what is missing is the deep connection I would usually feel for the lead female character. I mean, I could empathize her life’s changes, getting attacked and then being escorted to a school she’s told to go to. The change at knowing how dangerous everything is. Finding out her grandmother was murdered. These big changes have feelings, but it just wasn’t talked about in a way of her expressing them. She bottled it up. Still, these things happened and it did change the course of her life in a way that helped her grow. I’m not sure I want to read more of this series and I really hate giving bad reviews. The premise of this book was interesting. 5 bloodlines, their magic interacting without meaning too, they all gravitate to each other, it’s just it’s all noted very clinically. Not giving the reader the chance to fall for the characters, or even hate them. It’s possible she’s (Briar) on the spectrum, that would make sense. But again, never once talked about or even thought about. Maybe you will like it more?

August 17, 2026I have no idea what to rate this book. I almost threw it out the window multiple times…Like, a lot of freaking times.
If I never see the word “architecture” again, I’d be delighted. There were 3843 instances of the word architecture in the book. Okay, I exaggerate. But not by much. However, the context in which it was used vacillated. Greatly. So freaking painful.
If we use common words and assign different contexts to it within the same chapter, give a reader a freaking clue. This goes to “showing” not “telling.” Yes, that is actually a thing in writing.
The story had great potential. I mean, it could be a mentionable series. That’s what got me through the book. I cannot continue with the series, without primal scream therapy. And I don’t wander around in the woods screaming. I am an indoor cat.

June 7, 2026DNF at 60%. Just got bored: it’s like reading a shopping list. No emotion, completely flat.
