Book 12 of the Time Life series The Emergence of Man. The Emergence of Man is an older series from the early 70's. Each volume deals with one of the precepts of civilization or one of the civilizations that emerged at the dawn of humanity, and as such, they offer a unique glimpse of what life might have been like for our earliest ancestors.
Time-Life editions always present the reader with a simple but strong foundation on the given subject, and it certainly isn't any different with this well-presented overview of the ancient Hittite Empire. We get a re-telling of the history of these once unknown people, followed by the explanation of their gods, wars, and households.
The Hittites were one of the superpowers of ancient times, yet their ending came so quickly that their existence was forgotten for many years. Even now, we don't have all of their history and can only guess, based upon the information compiled from their enemies, the Egyptians. I believe they were the people of ancient Troy, as their empire covered that area and the Achaeans were their rivals.
I enjoy books that open up my eyes to new worlds and this book did the trick.
