SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Dies) is a system for dramatically reducing the time it takes to complete equipment changeovers. The essence of the SMED system is to convert as many changeover steps as possible to “external” (performed while the equipment is running), and to simplify and streamline the remaining steps.
Changeover costs take two forms, tangible and intangible. Tangible costs are those that are relatively easy to measure quantitatively. The cost of labor involved in changeover is a tangible cost and is the product of the number of workers involved times their hourly costs. Intangible costs are costs that are difficult or impossible to assign a dollar value. That does not mean they are less important than tangible costs.
The Simplified 6 - Step Roadmap outlines how to incorporate SMED and Quick Changeover in the factory and organization. In addition, the Ultimate Setup Improvement provides ideas on complete abolishment of setup.
Some of the most common techniques with wide ranging applications are reviewed – checklists, equipment checks and repairs, setup schedules, parallel tasks, attachment devices, and more.
