A science fiction comedy born from a love of the golden age of ridiculously awesome monster movies, "Attack of the Vyperians" will capture your attention from the first page and keep it all the way to the second. Uh, end. I meant end. How do I go back? How do I edit? Hello?
Tim Savage has been, among other things, a radio personality, a comedian, a performance artist, and a stolen computer chip salesman in Compton. From photos to essays to videos, his creative work has been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide and includes the popular character "Skweezy," the hopeless yet lovable anti-hero. Tim currently lives in Portland with his girlfriend and the spider that he has convinced his girlfriend to let stay in the corner of the bathroom as long as it doesn't drop down on her while she's showering.
UPDATE: The spider is dead. Foul play is not suspected
I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads.
My initial thought on the cover of this book was it could be a Young Adult novel. I can safely say it is not and it is probably not a book to pass onto your kids.
The novel is a brilliant science fiction book. Extremely funny in places with a lot of great characters and scenarios. It could be the best book I have read this year which is saying a lot for it. It has social satire, aliens, pop stars, teenagers, scientists, giant creatures, octopi (or octopodes or octopuses as I am not getting into that grammar debate) and a reality TV star who could be based on a few real ones.
The story branches out and comes together expertly and has a few surprises thrown into it. I see a Hollywood adaptation in the future for it which I would queue to watch. I think it is fair to say I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone above the age of 14!
Savage is obviously best known the world over for his Skweezy Jibbs persona, but apparently there's more to him than that. Attack of the Viperians is an homage to schlocky sci-fi B-movies as they exist in the minds of people who have mainly watched Mars Attacks!, and it pulls it off tolerably well. Some of the sexism (and homophobia) sometimes feels a little less deliberate and self-aware than you'd like to the point that I was surprised the book came out in 2015 rather than 2005, and there are a few slightly rough edges that mark it as a first novel, but it's solid entertainment. If you liked Mars Attacks! even a little bit, you'll certainly enjoy this.
(Skweezy himself has a cameo as a pop singer's bodyguard in a scene that can read as extremely dodgy if you're not aware of the character and the fact that he's white, and not just a white author's idea of what black people sound like.)
This book was bizarre, it was absurd, and it read like a cheesy B-movie the entire way through. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it, I enjoyed the heck out of it. Good, silly fun. I'd love to see this turned into an actual movie.
This is a pretty good take off on the alien invasion genre. You have lust filled aliens who want earth women, a dim but action based hero, and a scientist who is mentally enhanced. New York invaded, Los Angeles destroyed what more can you ask for? It's all in the details and you will enjoy them as you read this story about one of the most unusual invasions around. Funny.
I received this book from GoodReads First Reads. I thought this book was very weird and bizarre, I liked the imagery though. I love alien books, but this one was a little out there :)
3.75 stars. It was decently entertaining but the writingstyle wasn't amazing (wasn't bad either). It was mostly just a quick fun read and had some laughs
