Isis' goals for the future included things like attending and graduating college. However, becoming a monster wasn't part of the plan. Isis and her boyfriend, David, are on the brink of a horrible transformation and they are eager to stop it. Together, they set out on a quest to Greece to find Isis' biological father—the only person that may be able to help them. Their journey comes to an abrupt stop before it even begins when Isis falls ill, and Eros, David's best friend, arrives in Athens, unannounced and curious…with a plan of his own.
The hunt for her father leads Isis on the turbulent path of deceit, death, and demons as she anticipates the dawning of the beast that stirs inside her.
Nely Cab is a Writer of stuff, a Master Coffee Drinker, a Food Maker & Eater, and an Imaginary World Conqueror. She talks to herself—a lot—in her South Texas home while she plots stories about fantasy worlds and sips coffee from a pitcher. She’s known for cooking far too much food and has a tendency to overdo…well, everything. It is rumored that she's fabulous. Nely Cab is the best-selling author of the Creatura series.
Let me kick off this review by saying that I was the 1st person to rate ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ on GoodReads, and I feel very honored and happy to be able to do it. Nely, thank you so much for alowing me to read this book right after you sent it to the editor. You can’t imagine what this means to me, and I thank you for that.
The fact that Nely sent me a copy of the book has nothing to do with the rating or with the review. This is my honest review and opinion about a book I read, and m relationship with the author doesn’t influence it. Just had to make this clear.
Do you know that moment when you wait two years for a book, and when you finally get it, you read it in only 2 days? Two.freaking.days.! You read it, with your heart beating faster and you’re eyes shining because you love the characters so much and the story just sucks you in. And then you finish it. And it’s shocking, and heartbreaking, and you just hate the author, even if you love her, because she’s the reason why you have a new favorite series on your shelf.
Let me give you a glimpase into my mind the moment I’ve finished ‘Fruit of Misfortune’: Blank. Total silence. And theeen….
WTF? What was this? Did this really happen? Ugh Nely I hate you! I can’t believe you did this to us! What was that cliffhanger? Why? I am… I just can’t… let me crawl in a ball and cry! Why did I finish it? Nely like OMG you need to write the 3rd book UGH I want that book. Why was this book so short OMG I want more I am so depressed I can’t I won’t I can’t
So this was it. This was my mind after finishing ‘Fruit of misfortune’. I was in complete awe and shock.
The reason behind my shock?
The end. That was… that was… such a HUGE plot twist. Such a surprise! I didn’t expect that! Nely, that was such a.. strike! It was so unexpected! That cliffhanger was even worse than the cliffhanger from the first book. You need to start writing the 3rd book, because you’ll have angry readers threatening to kill you if you don’t give them the 3rd book! Including me. J
Reading “Fruit of misfortune” meant always gasping in surprise. The 2nd book in the ‘Creatura’ series is so, but so different from the 1st book! While ‘Creatura’ is more of a love story, ‘Fruit of misfortune’ is a fantasy book, with lots of action and plot twists.
This time, Nely chose not to focus so much on the love story. She, instead, focused on the battle between Isis and the monster inside her or on her attempt to save everyone around her. And let me say, this change was so unexpected, but so welcomed! “Fruit of misfortune” is very, but very captivating! There’s always a plot twist, always some battle, always a secret revealed, always something that makes you gasp and make you turn the page.
Although I liked this change, I have to admit that I missed David, his romantic lines and the cute story between him and Isis. I missed them and the romantic scenes between them. I missed Galen and Eryx and their stupid, funny lines. This book is more intense and very captivating, but I still missed the romantic side of the 1st book.
The character development in this book was surprising. David was more mature, I think, and more real. But he was kinda absent in this book. I don’t know why I felt this way. I felt like he was never there. But, as I said, this book is very different from ‘Creatura’, so David was always doing something, always trying to save Isis.
Oh, speaking of Isis. She got on my nerves. She was always stubborn, always whiny, depressed and so, so annoying! I don’t know what happened to her in this volume, but she was always getting on my nerves. She took some really bad decision, and she just wouldn’t listen to anyone. And omg, why did she do this to David?!
One of my favorite characters – also the new character in this series- is Galilea. She.was.so.awesome.! Such a badass! And that scene, in the wood! It was so funny! She was so cool, with her short hair and sassy attitude. Loved her.
O.M.G. The plot twists! The plot twists were so unexpected and so…so… mind-blowing!
Nely Cab did it again. She wrote a new brilliant book. But, she didn’t do just that. She took this series to a new level. While in ‘Creatura’ you can find an amazing love story, in ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ you can find more action than love. So, if you felt like ‘Creatura’ was too much of a love story for you, I think you should give ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ a try. You will be surprised, believe me. I didn’t expect the story to took such a drastic turn, but I loved it.
I can’t believe I read the 2nd book in the ‘Creatura’ series. I’m just, like, so sad to know that I need to wait another year or more for the 3rd book. I want it now!
I definitely think this was a perfect sequel. It’s more captivating and more fun than the 1st book, and I loved this thing. I already miss David, Galen and Eryx, and I SO cannot wait to meet them again in the 3rd volume.
So, people. Go read this book. Now. Because there’s a lot of action, huge plot twist, some hot scenes *wink wink*, sexy characters and unexpected situations. And funny scenes.
Let's start this review by saying that I can't believe I waited 3 YEARS to read this book. Three years is a long time to wait for any book, and I at least expected the book to be awesome. It wasn't, but I'll get around to that later.
I'll start with the cover. When the first volume in this series, Creatura, was first published in 2011, it looked like this:
The art was done by the author herself and I believe the delicate tree in vivid red and dark brown on a papyrus-style ground was both new and tasteful, going away from all the attention-seeking covers that have become the norm in Paranormal YA books. The cover was one of the reasons I bought Creatura in the first place, and I liked the book well enough, especially the epilogue.
When the book was newly published in 2013, it got a new cover which I liked far less but that I still felt was adequate because it expresses the mystery around Isis much better than the first cover:
Also, the girl on the cover is very pretty and her eyes, which are practically the only colored part of the cover, are very eye-catching.
Now, the cover of the second volume in the Creatura series is, to be honest, disappointing.
Instead of having the surreal touch the first cover had, this is clearly a photography. The model's eyes are messily photoshopped into being turquoise, which doesn't fit either the first cover or the book's description. And I'm not sure if it's just me but I think the strands of her slapping her face look really drawn into the picture. They don't fit the rest of the hair at all and they disturb the otherwise clean structure of the model's pose. The model does nothing to portray either Isis' style (which isn't nearly as pretentiously emo as it is on the cover) or character. The model looks confident and even powerful, two things which Isis clearly is not, at least not in this book. In "Fruit of Misfortune" Isis is looking for answers to the many questions of her existence and her future, and what the change happening to her might entail. Also, I just personally don't like the cover. I always thought that combining pink and black on a cover together with a teenage girl on it looked a bit silly. But that's just my opinion.
Even though I really dislike the cover, I love the title. "Fruit of Misfortune" is a title that holds a powerful premise - and a promise. So I had high hopes for this book.
In the end, my expectations, and not my hopes, were met. In Fruit of Misfortune, we encounter (mild spoilers but nothing serious):
- a Twilightesque non-pregnancy - a silly love triangle with a guy I would slap hard twice and then never talk to again - every single character being irrational and childish to everyone else - the main character being trashed as a "whore" repeatedly - a constant pity-party thrown by Isis for herself - David (the love interest apparent!) going from pretending to be the most understanding person in the universe to not even listening to reason because to hell with it - an evil guy who appears on the last 100 pages and is as 3-dimensional as a stick and whose motivations are as mysterious as the Illuminati - an illuminating deus ex machina ending that left me slightly weirded out
That was the short version, now to the long one (heavy spoilers for book one, mild ones for book two):
"Fruit of Misfortune" (sorry, I just love the title) deals with Isis' transformation into a Creatura. Because David gave her his star pendant (I think it came out of his heart but I can't be sure because it's been a long time) and they are linked for good or for worse, he's transforming as well. That's why Isis and David go to Greece to catch up to Isis' father, who should be able to tell them what's going on, which I found interesting because as a deity, I didn't think S. Leumas (that's his name) would know any more about being a Creatura than David and his family. I initially thought that this was the story of Book 2; with Isis and David meeting her father, finding out a terrible truth and then setting out to change their fate or something similar. It turns out this premise is dropped rather quickly and doesn't turn up again until much later, because the real story is then revealed: Isis is sick.
Isis (and David's) transformation had all the elements a self-respecting YA author who read Twilight would attribute to a gross transformation. There's vomiting phlegm, internal hemorrhaging, bleeding from noses and ears, lots of screaming and ill-advised self-medication that made my skin crawl. There were also unexplained bouts of extreme hypothermia! While I wouldn't exactly call that a good story, it WAS good entertainment. I would choose Isis vomiting any day over her talking to that hypocrite Eros.
And here we are at my first and biggest complaint. Eros. Eros is the self-proclaimed BFF of David's, and of course the first thing he does is literally throw himself at Isis. And I'm not kidding: it didn't even take him a day to share his saliva with her (forcibly, too). Eros is tricky for two reasons: one, he's disgusting and two, he thinks he's the sexiest man on earth and so does everyone else in the book. What's more, he turns Isis into the vilest of hypocrites, first flaming the house help in Greece and then being all "it's not cheating if I don't tell David about it!". Don't believe me? See here:
"But there was one thing that really displeased me, and that was the way Paulina looked at David. She was one of those rare, natural beauties that would stand out even in a crowded room. I knew she was only doing her job, but it made me jealous seeing her cater to David."
See how jealous and petty she is? She can't even handle another girl waitressing for her boyfriend, and I swear that's ALL Paulina did, and nothing more.
3 pages later (I counted on my kindle), she meets Eros, and falls in lust immediately:
"His touch felt like a warm, steady current running through my hand and up my arm. And his voice...the sound of his musical voice streaming through my ears seemed to carry a magnetic spell that wouldn't let me turn away."
Mother of purple prose, is that you? Seriously though, those two sentences nearly killed the book for me with their wannabe poetical waxing. But Isis always knows how to escalate a situation: "Our eyes locked, and my surroundings fell away." I'd like to point out that at that point they had only just met 5 minutes ago and they were making small talk in the parlor together with David.
Later on, Eros Lamoureux, which is a stupid name BTW, has really deep-diving conversations with Isis, his most notable opinion on Isis love life being this: "Do you have the will to live without knowing what it's like to love another? To never feel another man's touch? To never breathe another man's sugary breath?" Sugary breath? Really? I mean, come on. You gotta try harder than that, Eros. That line wouldn't convince Barbie to make out with you.
At one point, Eros' and Isis' conflict is effectively and gleefully summarized in the only good dialogue in the entire book:
""How dare you do that, knowing I'm in a relationship with your best freind?" I grabbed my journal and walked to the door. "And how dare you let me, knowing that I am his friend?" Eros follwed close behind."
Isis must have felt like this.
It's not that I hate Eros or anything; it's just that his sob-story of a past didn't nearly justify his sexual harrassment of Isis in the beginning.
But while Eros' and Isis' stupid excapades could be attributed to their mad hormones, I'm not sure what to make of David. What are you, David? David is grandfather-menatility ("look at all those cool temples!" "fun fact about Michelangelo: I was the model for his David!") packed into a superman body. While the former leads to fighting between Isis and him, the latter isn't important because Eros is waaaaaaaay hotter. In all honesty, David is completely eclipsed by Isis whining over her fate and making grave decisions and lyrical entries in her diary and her making out with Eros (but of course she totally loves David and reminds the reader of that in every odd chapter).
Basically Isis is cheating on David and justifies it to herself throughout the book. While I don't think that kind of behaviour and her dishonesty are anywhere near okay, it doesn't warrant the kind of treatment she gets from David's brother Galen (from the very beginning and completely unlinked to her cheating). Every time Galen appears, he calls Isis "stupid", "dumb", "idiotic", a "whore" and equally demeaning things. Isis doesn't really react to Galen's insults, and shockingly enough, neither does David or the rest of his family. To call another family member's girlfriend or fiancé a stupid slut to her face in public is extremely degrading and I have absolutely no tolerance for that kind of thing happening and being ignored by other characters. I mean, it's not enough for David to say that such language was "uncalled for". Because Galen is a member of David's family, Isis can't very well protect herself without it being awkward for her. As David's brother, he's his responsibility. I simply cannot believe that both David and his mother just tolerated Galen's bashing. To be fair, though, Galen is a dick to every female in the book, especially his ex-girlfriend whom he treats like garbage or a possession, depending on his moods, which is also tolerated by everyone. Disgusting! I really hope that Galen gets to die a miserable death as collateral damage in a fight in a future book.
At about 80% into the book, the initial premise was back in place and Isis actually went to see her father, who has an undefined character and does nothing to move the plot forward. Also, an evil guy appears and disappears again.
In total, Book 2 in the series had little to no substance plot-wise, and the characters had few redeeming qualities and terrible dialogues. On the plus side, the book was entertaining. I'm still interested in Book 3 and I really hope that the characters will find their place in the world and decide just what they want, and that they get a plot with a little more meat to it.
***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***
There is so much I want to say and so much that I CAN'T! When it came to reading the end of the book, I had some colorful words for Nely, because how could she just leave us hanging like that?! I want, no, NEED the third book of this series, like now! But, I have to admit I'm enjoying this feeling of anticipation that cliffhangers always give me.
Now that you know the ending made me upset (in a good way, haha), let's get on with what the rest of the book had to offer. We see a character that introduced in Creatura play a bigger part in this book. And let me just say I absolutely hate his guts. Who? Eros. He is a fricking creep who doesn't understand no means NO. N-to-the-O. He constantly harrasses Isis, even when she tells him to get away from her. This isn't okay with me, because it reminds me too much of rape culture. Just because you think a girl may be into you doesn't give you the right to force your unwanted attentions on them. So yeah. I hate Eros.
A lot happens to Isis and David as they start their journey in search of Isis' biological father. They both are changing and it's hard not to reveal all the things they undergo without giving out spoilers. But just know that their relationship takes a very different path than the one I thought they would be on. I have to say I missed Claire (Isis' mom) in this book because is quite a quirky character. Hopefully we see more of her in the third book.
Apart from the pest that is Eros, this book had me reading until I got to 98% and read Acknowledgements. That's when I realized there was no more story to read and I went on a verbal rampage. And because this book evoked such a strong reaction from me, I give it all 5 Platypires!
Fruit of Misfortune is an amazing continuation of a series that is just so new and different, that I encourage everyone to pick it up. In the second book, Isis is turning into what she was born to be (spoiler free, vague statement there), and she's bringing David along for the ride, though not completely willingly. She's at an age where she knows what love is, but isn't ready to say that any one thing is forever - and man can I relate! At 18, I was the same way - and it's so refreshing to read a book that doesn't center around a female character who falls in love and thinks it's forever and it's a beautiful fairy tale - because let's face it, while those stories are so sweet, and heart warming to read - they're not always realistic. (Okay, they're very rarely realistic.) Although the setting and back story for this series is paranormal in nature, the things that Isis faces in relation to her character growth and depth - are very easy to relate to.
David is as charming as ever. He's more patient than I've ever seen any man be in real life, but I like that about him. He's not pushy - but he speaks his mind. He gets mad, and he apologizes. He feels things on such an extreme level. It's very heartwarming to read about him and the struggles he faces with relating to Isis.
This book has a cliffhanger that makes you want to throw your book across the room, but I know it'll be worth it when we see the ending. Let's just say - I'm rooting for both Isis and David. If you're a fan of paranormal YA, then you must pick up this book!
I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I would like it known that I waited almost two years for this book. I had hyped myself up for it, so there were a lot of high expectations on my part.
This book did not disappoint.
There were several new characters, and they all fit right into the story. Although I would like it known that I shall refer to Eros as "buttface" until he proves himself otherwise.
I both liked and wanted to smack Isis in this story for how she acted. I understand that she didn't have the full picture, and she was trying to do what she thought was for the best, but gawd damn. It was a nice relief to see a heroine struggling and not have everything together where it fits into place perfectly. Made her feel more realistic to me.
There were times where I felt lost, as if I had missed something, but each time the answer came later on in the story. I'm a very impatient person.
One thing I must say... expect feels. Because they're definitely in here.
Speaking of feels... my least favorite part was the ending, because just that... it ended. I will need book three immediately so that I may continue reading this story, because I'm frustrated that I don't have it with me now.
If you've read the first book (which I'm hoping you have if you're reading this review), you know the first book leaves off on a huge cliffhanger. I have wondered multiple times what happens but I didn't have a copy of this book! I'm glad I finally got the chance to read it after I grabbed a copy from the library(No thanks to Judith from Platypire reviews, ya jerk :P ).
To my surprise, I enjoyed this book more than the first; I haven't had that happen in a long time. The new characters introduced in the story made a fantastic addition and sparked a new interested in me for it. I really love the direction Nely Cab is taking the story. The fact Isis's condition is the kinda the main focus in this book may be the reason I liked it so much. From the first book it caught my attention and I'm glad it gave more of a peek into it. I really have grown to love these characters. That being said, I'm glad I don't have the third(and final) book in the series.....because I would have missed my deadlines to read it! This is a great YA read and I'm looking forward to more from this author!
I made no secret about how much I loved Creatura and if I'm being honest, I was afraid that the second book-like many before it- would fall flat. I shouldn't have worried. Fruit of Misfortune continues the story of the Creatura Isis and her greek god boyfriend, David, this time in Greece while they look for Isis' father and try to find answers before their transformation is complete and their death warrants are signed.
The introduction of new characters creates new drama and intrigue for the pair, but don't discount the continuation of original character stories as well. All in all I couldn't put this book down until it was finished, and was blown away by Nely Cab's eye for detail.
Fruits of Misfortune is part two in the Creature series. And Nely Cab has done it again, by writing an awesome story that ends in a cliffhanger. I love the cover and how the story unfolds. I do however hate that I can't read the third book NOW! :) Thanks for another great read.
Just finished reading it and I thought it was really good, way better then the first book in the series. Was kind of sad and surprised at how the book ended can't wait till the next book comes out !
This is the second book in the Creatura series and book 1 (Creatura) needs to be read first. Isis has found out the truth about herself and what she really is. Traveling with David to Greece, Isis sets out to locate her biological father and get information from him. While in Greece, Isis becomes gravely ill and needs treatment. New characters are introduced, doctors, gangsters, and new gods and goddesses, bringing new concerns for not only Isis and David, but also for David’s family as well. This story has sucked me in and kept me reading late. I wanted to know what was going to happen next in Isis’s world. My only issue was the maturity level of David. He’s been around for a very long time (not going to give anything away), but he acts like a child sometimes and it’s frustrating given that he is a god. I can forgive Isis some of her immaturity because she’s just graduated high school. That’s the reason for the 4 stars. The writing is good, and I love the addition of some of the new characters.
The turns this storybtook was interesting, but what I don't understand is why Isis became such an idiotic character? 🤔 Maybe because Mrs. Cab wanted to get to exactly that finale for this book, but still...it was somewhat forced. David and Isis are too nauseous sometimes, but you would think there would be some discussions between two people in love....and by that I mean real talk...talk it out..lay it all on the table? Nothing?! 🧐🤔😑🙄 Maybe it's because that was the trend when the books were published? Although, I don't think that's an excuse
In Nely Cab’s Creatura series, everything you thought you knew about dreams and love will be turned upside down and inside out with the turn of every page. Fruit of Misfortune is the second book in the Creatura series and picks up immediately after one heck of a cliff hanger, one that, as a reader, took my breath away and left me incredibly grateful that I already had the next installment on hand. Isis has always been in control of her dreams, until one day her dreams reached out and took control of her. We now know that her dream world is a very real place filled with very real people, all of whom have become pivotal to her journey, some more intimately than others. Now that her dreams are her new reality and Isis seems to be heading toward a variation of happily ever after, her nightmares begin to seep in. With nowhere else to go, these terrors begin to soak deep into her ever changing world, infiltrating every facet of her life. What first begins as a slow trickle of misfortune soon blossoms into a growing and living force flooding everything that was, until it is no more. Until she is no more. Cab does an impeccable job of weaving multiple realms and realities into one seamless story. Worlds that should not exist in the same plane make perfect sense in the universe she creates, its brilliance begging as to why it has never been done before. The relationships between each of the characters and the ensemble as a whole also hold that same charm. They are all individually strong and independent in their own ways, but as they band together, even in their misfit ways, they create a force that has yet to be seen in full force. Everything is tested; everything is twisted, yet everything is found solid. The relationships explored in this book especially made my heart do extraordinary things. It was made to stop, flutter and skip a beat all at once. The relationships in Creatura have always been of the complex variety, but in Fruit of Misfortune that complexity is increased ten-fold. I went from love to hate and back again more times that I can count, and as a result developed the most wonderfully confusing and intricate relationships with each one of the characters. It bonded my experiences as a reader to their experiences to the point where I felt it was happening to me, in my world. To me, that is the mark of a great book, one that welcomes you in and invites you to stay. Fruit of Misfortune and the Creatura series as a whole is without a doubt a five star read. When the last page was turned, I felt that I had lost something much akin to a friend, but gained so much more imagination and insight. This is not only an incredible read, it is an important one. It challenges the reader and moves them in the direction of change. Cab’s message of triumph and perseverance fo not go unnoticed. Through her storytelling, her and her characters usher us out of misfortune and straight into hope.
I only read this book bc i had a copy and even if the first one was pretty bad ... ngl I was curious where the story was going.
Where do I begin? I gave this 2 stars only bc there were some plot twists that I did not expect at all, and those plot twists pushed me to keep reading and find out where the hell the author is taking this story.
So overall it was pretty bad, the writing is really simple, I'm sure I read better fanfiction than this. And the dialogue? Omg, it was atrocious. The first book is the same, the writing did not get any better. And the main couple? David and Isis gave me a headache. Especially David's stupid jealousy and temper. And omg he was pushing Isis so much into getting married with him and when she refused, bc she is fucking 17 years old (or whatever old she is) he seemed to mock her answer??!??!! He immediately was like "oh ofc you're so young" like he was annoyed that she said that? Which is the truth? Such a red flag. Literally this whole book is full of red flags, from everyone.
Idk man, he pissed me off. And so did Isis. I mean I totally support her for saying no, but like she is so irrational sometimes, and she makes rash decisions and then later wants to beat herself up for making those decisions. Like girl, if you run away with the dude who's been hitting on you in front of your bf, ofc that's gonna have consequences. Ofc he's gonna be pissed off you did that. But also, fuck David.
Now for the good parts. I did not expect Galilea to appear at the diner. That whole scene where she's there with Eros, and then she veiled herself from him? Wow I did not expect that. And the whole transformation that her and David are going through is pretty interesting. They're turning into this snake reptile thing and I'm here for it. Such a vibe, I love it. I've never read or seen any kind of story or creature like this, so it's really intriguing. The whole puking up that black shit and then later finding out that it's fat because her body does not digest certain foods was so interesting. This whole biology lesson we're getting is pretty cool. Also the doctor? Dr. Gunn? So weird, I couldn't get enough of him! Love him honestly, such a weird and crazy character, can't wait to see him more in the next book. Also Gailen, or whatever the brother's name is, he really stepped it up in this book. He pissed me of in the first one, but this? He's actually funny. Loved his character. Again, can't wait to see more of this side of him.
Anyway, I'm probably gonna read the next book bc I'm really curious wtf is happening with this story.
Edit: forgot to mention that I tried reading this book 4 years ago but I dnfed it bc i hated the love triangle that was forming and bc Eros annoyed me so much, but now it got so entertaining to see such a badly written story, but has some potential.

This is the second book in the Creatura series. I LOVED IT!
Isis Martin is not a normal teen. After finding out that she is a Creatura - a being created when an immortal and a human have children - Isis is determined to track down her father to find out what she is transforming into.
I have been dying to read this book ever since I read Creatura, and went into shock after the cliffhanger at the end of the book (my jaw literally dropped and I had to re-read the ending three times!). It has been a long wait, but it was SO worth it! The story actually starts right where the last book ended and continues with Isis and David travelling to Greece to track down her father, S. Leumas. I loved Isis when I met her in the first book. However, I did want to smack her a few times for the way she treated David on occasion in this book. I don't think she appreciates or realises the depth of the sacrifice that David has made. That being said, she is madly in love with him. It was also wonderful to meet David's family again. The Chios clan are a formidable, but loving, bunch. There were also a few new characters added into the mix, but none more compelling than Eros. Eros is also an immortal and David's best friend. He is very charming, and just like his name suggests, is the god of affection and desire. He too succumbs to Isis's charms, and I think he genuinely falls for her himself. The story is another emotional roller coaster ride; I shed more than one tear in places. However, there is a little less romance and more adventure, as the time ticks down to Isis's and David's transformation. I found myself hooked from the first page, and read the book in one sitting. There are several twists and turns that kept me riveted, and one large one near the end that I did not see coming. I am a little disappointed that there were none of David's poems in this story, but I suppose that there was too much going on for any. The end of the story does not finish in another shocking cliffhanger, but I am looking forward to reading the next book as soon as possible.
Nely Cab has written a fast paced YA series with a uniqueness I love; her imagination seems to know no bounds. I love her writing style and the story flowed wonderfully. She already is on my Favourite Authors list.
I highly recommend this book if you love YA or Paranormal Romances. - Lynn Worton
Book one, Creatura, left me with a HUGE book hangover! Normally if I know ahead of time I am going to have to deal with that kind of ending, I will put off a series until all the books are out. I’m just not that patient a person. But, since I received Creatura as part of a giveaway and promised to give an honest review on it… I gave it a shot. I posted my review for Creatura a few days ago (http://bookie-monster.com/2014/04/cre...) and after a very long wait…. I give you Fruit of Misfortune, book two in the Creatura series.
This book picks up where book one left off. Isis and David are on a plane to Greece. The huge cliffhanger is explained and everyone goes about their lives… well, as best they can because the change is coming soon!
I really liked book one and, to be honest, I had reservations that book two might let me down a little. But not because it was bad, but because it was such a long time coming. I almost felt like maybe I wouldn’t be as into the story as I was before. But this book did not disappoint me at all. In fact, I could see some subtle improvements in the writing style and character development. Isis is still herself….an angsty teenager who has a tendency to run hot and cold and lose her cool at the drop of a hat. David is still himself…. overprotective and jealous most of the time.
The introduction of some new characters adds a lot of intrigue and drama to the story as well. The one thing that bothered me the most would be the confrontation between Isis and her father. I just expected… well, I’m not sure exactly what I expected, but that wasn’t it. That whole situation was rather anti-climactic and left me saying “Is that it?”.
Be prepared for another cliffhanger! While the ending to this book seems like “The End” because of the nature of the characters, you know deep down that it’s not anywhere near the end. I need book three… like yesterday. But I will just have to be patient like the rest of the world. Rest assured I will be stalking the author for news of book three. I started the Creatura series last year because it was a recommendation from booktuber I follow. I read the synopsis and realized it was about mythology and since I love stuff like that I gave it a go. I Creatura was really good and I knew I had to get the other books in the series as soon as they were released. Later on that year the second book in the Creatura series, Fruit of Misfortune came out and I got it right away, I was planning on reading it especially after I read the cliffhanger ending from the first book but then I heard that Fruit of Misfortune had a cliffhanger ending that was heartbreaking and I held off until I was able to get the final book, Marker of Hope.
Fruit of Misfortune was so good. We still dealing with mythology but now also some science behind the mythology and we are also dealing with prophecy and destines. Isis is still the same girl she was in the first book. I always saw her as a real world girl that was dropped in a ya novel. She is impulsive, doesn't connect certain things, reckless, has a bad temper and she keeps making mistakes, she seems more like a real girl rather than a ya heroine. As for David, we get to see a totally different side to his personality and it shows that he is far from perfect. Old and new characters join in this adventure and one of the character (even though I don't like him) makes some valid points when it comes to David and Isis relationship, which is on the rocks by the way.
The plot is a interesting and new and that is a good thing to come across but that ending damned near killed me and I hope Nely fixed things because if not I will be burning this entire book series.
Fruits of Misfortune had action, mystery, romance, deceit, betrayal, love, heartbreak and more. I am looking forward to the last book in this series, I am looking forward to Marker of Hope.
* I received an ebook in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. *
This is book 2 in the series and it picks up right where book 1 left off. You should read book 1 before starting this one as you will need to know what has happened in order to understand the progression of the story. Author Nely Cab didn't disappoint the reader at all with this book - sometimes the anticipation of the next book overshadows the actual book but not this time! This time the anticipation actually made it sweeter (not that I actually had to wait that long, lol)!
The storyline continues with Isis and David and their split - it also continues with the drama that has been plaguing all of their lives....can Isis and David continue to survive the change that is taking over their bodies? Will Isis finally find the father that she has been searching for? Will David and Ero's continue to remain friends? Who will Isis choose in the end?!?
The plot is fast moving, full of fun and it has it's fair share of drama. Isis is still coming to terms with everything that is going on in her life, especially an unexpected surprise....the reader will not be able to guess what is going to happen next! The twists, turns, loops and curves come at the reader at a break neck pace and they never slow down. Be prepared to become immersed in the world that author Nely Cab has created for our enjoyment!
Sit back, clear your schedule and be prepared to have nothing but an amazing time while you zoom through this one! Enjoy and be forewarned that you will want to one-click book 3 before you have actually even finished reading book 2!

Its been awhile since I had David Chios in my hands.. And let me tell you he was missed and still very missed. As Fruits of Misfortune was more Isis’s story than anything else. Though its been awhile for me since the Creatura in FOM we start of very close to where we left off. Isis and David are on the hunt for her father and answers.. How can they stop what shes becoming?
I dont like Isis, I just dont. And im not even going to apologize for that.. Could be it my super book crush on David…. Well I can neither confirm or deny it. Lol lets be real here thats exactly why. He’s too good for her. And I feel like that point is made with the addition of Eros to their little vacation. Isis cant stop drooling over Eros and God does he love it. Eros is a super jerk and not one that I really liked. I mean I loved how he kept telling Isis she was ugly because I mean that was just funny.. Wow I feel like a mean girl. IM not usually. Okay shit maybe I am. This needs to stop being a confession and start being a book review.
So yeah they are looking for her dad.. And bless her heart Isis is a mess EVERYTHING she does to help backfires. I truly believe she thought she was helping but she just didnt. She ended up making one mess after another. The messes were basically left for everyone else to clean up.. David, Eros, Nyx, Galilea.
I did still enjoy all the other characters so that was cool. There were twist, turns and new characters that kept me reading. The end was a bit of a surprise so I cant wait to see where Cab will go with this! OOH OHHH and im told the next book is the finale. So you know its going to be amazing!
Woah...what...waiiiit..wait a second! He just left... WHAT!
Let's start with the beginning, shall we?! Obviously. Things were cheesy, sweet between Isis and David. I nearly got diabetes reading about them, cosy with each other and then BAM!!!!!! Enter the God of love and lust.
I don't trust Eros. How could he just fell in love? For a while I thought he got turpis in him or something. Sometimes he's charming and then irritated af. Even David lost his cool now and then. Though with Isis' persistence, I would have too. The half of the books were about Isis' feelings of helplessness, confusion and her transformation.
I was anticipating some sort of reptile creature buuuuut I dig the twist. I love the new character addition; Mr Gunn, Galilea - Isis' new bff I guess and Isis' biological Dad who is a coward. tuh! The other half of the book was so rushed and ended with a EFFING CLIFFHANGER...GAAAAH!!!!
I'm loving this series. We got to have one of David's awesome poem too. David..David, too good to be true, a true Greek God! I was irritated with Isis' insecurities but I would have feel the same with David and he's really rushing thing. I hope he's not like the Adam in the Shatter Me Trilogy where the female lead let go because he's tooooooo sweet and like to hover too much. I don't mind if Isis end up with him or Eros at the end, as long as we get to know WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON AND WHAT IS HER PURPOSE???
Now we got to wait for the next book....... NELY BRING IT ON!!!!

Fruits of Misfortune, the second book in the Creatura Series by Nely Cab started off so amazingly that I thought I would die of excitement. The first book was a really fresh and interesting YA debut. It went on my favorite YA list and trust me, it's hard to make that list.
Isis was a strong and believable heroine, going through a terrible transformation, and David was unique in the fact that he was a sweet and gentle soul, not the aggressive creepy guys that seem to plague the romance and YA romance genres.
While I loved all the action and gore that took place in Fruits of Misfortune, I can't rate it five stars because the superfluous love triangle. There was plenty of ground to cover in the story without adding another love interest that made no sense. It felt like it had been tacked on as an afterthought, like Nely Cab wanted to be like other YA and add another guy in the mix after she had written everything else.
It made no sense since the guy she is sure to choose in the end seems obvious. I do like a well-done love triangle that serves a purpose in the story but I'm sad to say this was not one of them.
I do look forward to seeing what will happen to Isis in the next book though.

A few years ago I read and reviewed the first book Creatura, and I remember that I liked it because I loved the aspect of Greek mythology that was incorporated into the story. I thought Isis was an interesting character, and I felt there was chemistry between her and David. Fruit of Misfortune, the second book, picks up shortly after the end of book one. I really enjoyed the second book as well.
While I still like Isis as a character, in this book, she frustrated me a little in what I would consider to be the stupid choices she made, but now, I think I can attribute her age to that to some degree. I think she was sincere, but as a reader, I found myself shaking my head. And Eros? In the most diplomatic way I can think to say it, he's a monumental manipulative jerk, and I wanted to slap him numerous times just for the principle of it all. Galilea, on the other hand, was a character I liked immediately. Throughout everything that's going on, from the moment she was introduced, she came across as the voice of reason and sanity, something I thought was very much needed. I really hope she's in the third book.
I know I definitely want to read the next book in this series, and I'll give Fruit of Misfortune a 5/5 platypire rating.
