Fueled by Pacific Northwest coffee and inspired by multiple viewings of every British costume drama she can get her hands on, USA Today bestselling author Christy Carlyle writes sensual historical romance set in the Victorian era. She loves heroes who struggle against all odds and heroines who are ahead of their time. A former teacher with a degree in history, she finds there's nothing better than being able to combine her love of the past with a die-hard belief in happy endings.
This is my first book by Christy Carlyle, but it won't be my last. I loved this book and the writing. I liked how there were really no "bad guys", I liked the secondary Characters and hope to see their stories in the future. This is the first book in the "Accidental Heirs" series. Our heroine is Jessamin Wright, who is running her father's book store since he has past away. Her father left her with a lot of debts. Jessamin is talked into kissing our hero, Lucius Crawford, Viscount Grimsb for money. Jessamin thinking that the money would help her greatly with her bills decides to go ahead with the plan. Lucius is not really a bad guy. He is a serious person with family debts too that he is trying to work on. Lucius plan is to marry a for money...but once that kiss happens it puts them both on a different path. I really loved this story and had to read it in one day! I hope that you find you like this book too!
I love finding new authors. I definitely plan on reading more by Christy Carlyle!
Jessamin Wright is offered the money to kiss a total stranger at the behest of a young woman who is upset the man in question ignored her. Money she desperately needs to pay of her father's debts, or she'll loose the bookshop she's been running since he died. Lucius Crawford, Viscount Grimsby (nicknamed "Lord Grim" because he never smiles), needs to marry a rich woman -and soon- if he wants to save his father's estate. Ever since his wife died, the Earl has refused to leave his rooms, leaving stewardship of his estates to his son. But he refuses to acknowledge times are changing and scorns his son's ideas of investment, selling of land, or modernizing anything. So when he finds himself attracted to a bluestocking suffragette who turned his life upside down with just one scandalous kiss but has no dowry and voices her opinions proudly, he is torn between doing right by his family and the people living on his lands and fighting for what he truly wants.
"Lucius looked contemplative before reaching up and stroking one finger down her cheek, skimming it along the edge of her chin. "It seems we've found in each other what neither of us expected but always hoped for."
This book was... Nice. It didn't wow me, or had me staying up late to finish it, but it was nice. I liked the interesting premise, and the characters were really strong - I even ended up liking the one person I thought for sure I was going to hate (Kitty, the girl who dares Jess to kiss Lucius. In the beginning I thought she must be a truly horrible, spiteful person to think of something like this, but over the course of the book she grew on me, and I'm actually curious to see who she ends up with in the next book). I loved strong and silent Lucius and how he not only supported Jess' opinions, but encouraged her: . I loved that Jess was smart (at least up until the end when she did something I thought was really stupid), hard-working, and not ashamed to voice her opinions about suffrage in a room full of aristocrats.
I didn't really like the pacing of the book though. After a strong and interesting beginning, I was a bit bored until Jess and Lucius were finally in the same house again, then there was a rather annoying last-minute complication that I thought was unnecessary, and then there was a rather anticlimactic ending. But that's just me and my dislike for forced drama.
Very nice read! It is so relieving to the mind to read a book with sensible characters, and also one in which neither character is stubborn as a mule or afraid to admit to their feelings. Plot-wise the story is tightly knit, and overall this is a very well-written book, but somehow lacks the vitality of a 5-star keeper (not to undermine this book at all).
I really struggled to make it through this book. I love the idea of a noble hero who tries to avoid passion and keep a cool control, getting totally thrown for a loop by a headstrong heroine. The story’s premise drew me in. But it moved very slowly, and frankly, I found it just plain boring. The characters are largely superficial. There is too much narrative to wade through between snatches of dialogue. There’s just no emotion. I didn’t care.
As the story begins, the heroine, Jessamin, is struggling to keep her father’s bookstore afloat. When she inherited it after his death, it was already in terrible shape financially. A lady’s offer to pay her 100 pounds to seek revenge on a dour lord is a proposition she can’t resist. All she has to do is lay a kiss on Lucian, Lord Grimsby, in public. It actually ends up being quite pleasant. But the scandal causes Jessamin more trouble than she bargained for and she ends up losing her bookstore anyway and taking a job as a companion to Lucian’s aunt.
Lucian has plans to marry an American girl with a healthy dowry to help him rebuild his crumbling family home. But once Jessamin enters his life, he can think of no other woman but her. The two of them dance around their attraction for a little while, but it’s only a matter of time before they admit their true feelings.
So much of the story felt contrived. Like the very plot that threw Lucian and Jess together. He didn’t even remember the encounter that sparked the revenge plot. And as we got to know the woman who orchestrated it, it didn’t even make sense. I kept waiting for there to be more to her hurt feelings, but there wasn’t. Then, there is the plot itself. How much could a kiss really harm a man’s reputation anyway? Maybe that would cause concern for a woman, but for a man? No.
Why did Lucian’s aunt take Jess under her wing? I kept waiting for some matchmaking, but that kind of fizzled. Lucian’s father, who was supposed to be a big roadblock, fizzled. The American girl and her father fizzled. And then, when everything should be settled, Jess does something totally stupid. That was the closest thing to feels this story gave me: irritation.
Everything about this book is lackluster… from the plot, to the pacing, the characterization to the romance and the sex. Just, meh at best. I wish I had better news. This was my first read from Christy Carlyle and I don’t see myself reading from her again.
This was a fun and sweet regency romance. It starts out when our heroine, is desperate to save her fathers book shop, and she is offered a 100 pounds in exchange for kissing a lord in public. A kiss...really easy right? Well somehow she ends up liking this stranger and that one kiss is one hell of a kiss and changed her forever. When she loses her shop over the scandal, she is offered a job to be a lady's companion and she is having to work with constantly. the love story between these two is sweet and heartwarming, but I had a problem really connecting with the love story. The characters were unique and interesting and they really were what won me over with One Scandalous Kiss.
Started out great and then just got so incredibly boring. I skipped entire pages near the end and didn't miss anything. The book went from things happening to nothing but inner dialogue. I'm in no hurry to read the next book, if I do at all.
Gah! I am trying to write this review for the third or fourth time. Goodreads keeps eating it and it totally messed up my blog post for the day. So here it goes again, sixth times a charm right?
So this was a fun sweet regency romance taking place in the late 19th century... partially in London, but in the country for the most part.
Our heroine is Jessamine Wright, a book lover, bookshop owner and suffragette. All of these things endeared Jess to me, and I suspect we would have gotten along quite well if she lived outside the pages of this book. I would have totally been a suffragette if I was around back then - what woman wants to be chattel? Hmpf.
Jess (an only child) has inherited the indebted bookshop, Wright and Sons, from her father. She is working to keep the shop afloat (in arrears due to her father's gambling), while also trying to raise money for the Women's Union. The desperation she is feeling leads her to accept a hasty endeavor... march up and kiss the dour Lord Grim for 100 pounds. Jess accepts the ill-fated venture... but finds her actions have unintended consequences. Such as the bank foreclosing as a result of her scandalous behavior!
Our hero, Lucius Crawford, Viscount Grimsby has been dubbed Lord Grim due to his severe countenance. He is taken aback by this brazen woman who made a beeline toward him and took liberties with his mouth. But it turns out that kiss was just what Lucius need to shake his foundations and do something for himself for once. I quite liked the broody and meticulous Grimsby... his touch of OCD made him a more interesting character. The need to impose order where there was chaos came from the stress Lucius was enduring at his crumbling estate, and dealing with a father thought to be mad (but whom was really suffering from dementia or Alzheimers).
I thought Lucius and Jess were a good match and I enjoyed meandering through their romance. This story had some great secondary characters, and I hope they get their own books in the future (especially Wellesby and Alice).
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars / 2 flames.
Because of a kiss started for the wrongest of motives, Jess and Lucius find a true and profound love. (I cannot say I wouldn't want a Lucius for myself...I do love the brooding types that smile only for me. ;) ) This book is one of those you need to savor. It is slow paced and full of feelings. It's also set in a period of which authors don't write enough. Jessamin, in fact, is a suffragette who writes speeches for meetings and, at the same times, tries to make ends meet with a bookshop that her father has left heavily indebted because of his gambling addiction. When a Lady offers a hundred pounds for a stolen kiss to a Lord Grim(sby) because she feels rejected by him (in a childish and seflish way if you ask me) Jess, desperate to save the shop, rashly accepts... and in so doing starts a series of events to which no one would have thought. I really enjoyed Christy Carlyle's style of writing. I found it perfect for the time she is speaking about, "fluent" and rich. I liked all her characters too, the likeable ones and the ones not so much (I couldn't stand his sister and I would have slapped her a time or two...or three XD). Even if the story is not perfect, many can say it is too slow, for me it was a very good "first read" from this new author. The perfect book to read when you want something that can soothe your mind and engage your feelings.
Thanks to Edelweiss and Avon for the chance to read this book.
"...she’d felt in their kiss what he had, a strange alchemy of need and desire, a sense that whatever he’d been seeking might have finally been found?"
This book may be the perfect romance. This is not a fast paced romance, they don't fall in love at first sight, theirs is a romance that grows. This is a beautiful story about the heir to an Earldom, the grim Viscount, and a bookshop owners daughter. What began with a wager to kiss "Viscount Grim" takes a totally unexpected turn. There are many wonderful secondary characters who play an important role in this story who I hope to see in future. I was drawn in to this story, by the main characters and their journey, it is almost magical, Cinderella like or maybe Snow White. Jessamin's character is a quiet, but determined strength. Lucius, Viscount Grimsby seems a broody, grim, quiet man, who few really know and he likes it that way. I found it very difficult to put this book down, it is well written, with depth and substance that captivated me, and kept me reading. For this one of a kind romance I gave it a well deserved 5-stars, and I truly hope you'll read it too. I highly recommend it!
t has been a long time since I've read an historical romance and I thought the plot has some potential to make an entertaining read.
If the character are nice, I thought the story was lacking of rhythm. It's a short one when as soon as the dare is issued and the kiss is given…the reader will have to wait until the last pages to have some action. Romantic action or some twist… A bit too look as I'm not patient and prefer a fast pace in my stories.
It's not a bad story just one that will not mark me.
#1 in "Accidental Heirs" series. An interesting and unique romance with a few twists and turns. Can a Kiss truly lead to a HEA? Well, in this story of passion, guilt, financial troubles, romance and love, it can. Many problems face two strangers, who find more in life than fulfilling others wishes but can they find their own happiness. An interesting, well written tale with a cast of characters who are engaging, endearing and entertaining. An enjoyable and satisfying read. I look forward to the next installment. A delightful read!

1.5 stars, but I was feeling generous for some reason.
I've been reading so many mystery novels lately, so I thought I'd go to the bottom of the list of books on my e-reader (aka the books on there the longest) and pick a non-mystery novel. I knew when I started reading this that I probably shouldn't finish it. And then for some reason I did?
It just... it doesn't hang together. The whole set-up is weird: an aristocratic young woman bets a suffragette to kiss, and therefore cause a scandal for, a viscount who snubbed her - and then the whole thing rolls from there.
I just, I don't get any of the character motivations. Beyond he's a straitlaced, severe aristocrat who's terrified of falling in love because of his father's bad influence, except not really. She owns a bookstore in financial troule and is a plucky suffragette (though refreshingly not a an overly reckless one). The one kiss affects them both so much they immediately fall in love (or close to it). She loses her shop out of the scandal for... reasons of advancing the plot, I guess. Then his aunt offers her the post of companion for what feels like a ridiculous sum of money... because the aunt feels guilty and recognizes desperation? Then the aunt takes her to a house party at dude's crumbling estate, while also inviting the rich, American heiress everyone hopes he'll marry. To the author's credit, the heiress is lovely. Which is nice, but makes the whole plotline kind of pointless, because very quickly no one (including the aunt) wants that marriage (except both fathers).
And then basically everyone at the house party divides into camp true love v. camp conforming to society's expectations. And the whole thing meanders around trying to create drama, and never really creating it because in the end it just feels like about 10 chapters on love v. duty and whether they can make each other happy/work in each other's worlds. And then everything is resolved after a quick trip to London.
It all feels incredibly easy, while simultaneously feeling like it makes no sense and doesn't hang together. There are nice character moments, but mainly with the side characters and not between the protagonists, which isn't ideal in a romance. Generally, I feel like, as a whole this just... doesn't work.

REVIEW: ONE SCANDALOUS KISS (ACCIDENTAL HEIRS #1) BY CHRISTY CARLYLE
One Scandalous Kiss by Christy CarlyleMy rating: 3.5 of 5 starsA bribe turns into the love of a lifetime. Once Scandalous Kiss took two delightful characters and made me fall for them page by page. Jessamin was one of those characters that over analyze. She made decisions based on logic and was surprised when her emotions came into play. With one kiss Lucius knows his life has changed. A nobleman who is more focused on the responsibilities his title entails, he is captivated by the woman bold enough to bring him out of his shell. Christy Carlyle has in One Scandalous Kiss written an emotionally fulfilling story. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.View all my reviews
My experience reading this novel was akin to watching a movie that was not objectionable, but not terribly interesting or exciting either. The relationship between Lucius and Jessamine hinges on one magical kiss and it's ripple effect on the lives of several people. The main characters all seem intelligent and interesting but the premise that some "...scheming marquess's daughter offers her [Jessamin] one hundred pounds to publicly kiss a nobleman," is even more ridiculous than the character, Jessamin, thinks it is. This character, Kitty is one of two Puck-like characters; male and female antagonists. And, it is so easy for Kitty to sway Jessamin from acceptable behavior with the offer of money. Is the author attempting to make us think of the thousands of ways people whore themselves every day? In a way, I guess, the novel's characters are anticipating the massive changes in-store for the British aristocracy.
And, the characters' relationships to each other aren't really well developed. For example, Lucius has a friend who is tolerated, but who seems both wise and puckish. I did not understand his relationship to the characters at all. And the characters each seem to be the victim of some sort of trauma turning them all into somewhat broken people.
The motives of the individuals who push each event in the story forward are hard to understand. And the ending of the story comes about as if in a dream.
I was just not enticed by the story or the characters. I had to force myself through it. But it does cover and interesting time and has an interesting start and it does cover the movement for women's suffrage so I have to give it some points for women's rights!
This is an intriguing romance, set in late Victorian England, full of sensual chemistry and interesting characters.
Jessamin, a suffragette, agrees to create a scandal, because she is struggling to keep her late father's debt ridden bookshop open. Kissing a nobleman, in the midst of the ton, is far out of her comfort zone but needs must and the scandal she causes is the least of her worries. Lucius is the accidental heir to a crumbling estate, with his father's diminishing mental health; marrying money is the way to save his ancestral home and appease his demanding father. Fate intervenes; will he forsake his duty for love?
Vividly written with some surprises, for both Jessamin and Lucius, there are lots of noteworthy supporting characters, particularly Aunt Augusta. The chemistry between Jessamin and Lucius is tantalising and the ending, perfect fairytale romance. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I have to admit that Carlyle is such a fresh face in a crowded industry of historical romance and in many ways the author's writing is such a welcome relief. To put it simply I adored this alluring love story as it was beautiful, slightly scandalous with a touch of heart and I could not be happier by what I uncovered within the pages of this wonderful story.
There was certainly a great deal to admire about the story itself, but my absolute favorite part had to be how innocently the romance began. After all one kiss by a lord in the mist of public couldn't hurt anyone including Jessamin, the heroine and yet one kiss as she founds out by Lucius, the hero is never enough. This type of romance is what first drew me into reading romance in junior high-passionate and the kind of crush that turns out to be unforgettable.
As for the plot most of it is pure romance. There are other little bits going on in the background of the book of course, but I like the fact that Carlyle allowed the romance to be the center of the story. I find this to be highly important and as lightly as it may sound many authors in today's world overshadow their romances with the plots-this reason alone is why I return to Carlyle when I crave an untainted love story.
This book is immensely recommended by myself. I loved every moment that I spent reading it and I know that this one book that romance readers are going to love and want to return to time and time again as I know I will.
How far would you go to save your (deceased) wastrel father's business? Sometimes keeping a deathbed promise isn't the best road for a girl to follow. But Jess has integrity enough to do just that, keep his bookstore at all costs. What he also left her was his massive gambling debt. When an opportunity to earn enough to bring the bank note current-she accepts. A little rich girl is upset that the handsome Viscount would not dance with her, he barely acknowledged her and now he needs to be taught a lesson-brought to his knees, and it is Jess who will bring him down...'the best laid plans' and all that. As things fall apart in her comfortable, albeit sheltered world, she is rescued by an unlikely ally and taken to the estate of said Viscount. He needs to wed a very wealthy heiress (don't they all) before the roof caves in around them. Enter: rich heiress from America-to play 'dollars for title'. But there are temptations for all at this engagement-house party. And the heiress and Viscount cannot seem to keep their eyes focused. The rake friend, the little rich girl that got her feelings hurt (Yes, she showed up too!) and the well intentioned, busy body aunt are of no help. You will thoroughly enjoy reading this, the first of the series, roller coaster ride into happiness.
I thought this was a lovely Victorian romance. Lucius and Jess are both very likable and very sweet together. The story is pretty straightforward... it starts with a bargain that involves Jess kissing and thus embarrassing Lucius in public for snubbing a young woman. But Lucius isn't embarrassed at all... in fact, he basically loves the kiss (talk about a plan backfiring!), and neither of them can forget the stolen moment even though they don't think they should be together. Maybe a bit slow paced, but overall, a sweet and fulfilling romance.
Some things I especially liked: book love+book references (be still my bookish heart!), pugs named Castor and Pollux, Robert Wellesley-the rakish best friend (I hope he'll be getting a book at some point), and Lady Kitty (I already know she's the heroine of the next book, which is awesome because I thought she was a great secondary character).
I really enjoyed this book. I didn’t think I was in the mood for a historical romance, but I guess somewhere deep down I was very much craving one and I am super glad I was became a part of this tour!
I liked all her characters, some I definitely found more appealing than others (I really didn’t care for his sister).
Overall even if the story may seem a little slow for others, for me it was a well-paced read from start to finish and I am looking forward to reading more from Christy in the future!
*I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.*
A young working woman with nothing to lose, a grim aristocrat who just wants to be left alone, but is in desperate need of a rich bride, one snubbed debutante. Put them all together and you have one scandalous kiss. The power of that kiss changes everything.
With the aristocrat determined to do his duty, will they find their happily ever after? Well if they didn't, this wouldn't be much of a story.
I got about 44% through this book before I gave up. It wasn't because there was anything wrong per se, nothing seriously weird or ridiculous happened and it was fairly well written. My big problem? Boredom. Normally I look forward to being able to pick up my kindle and start reading, with this book, I was starting to dread it as I was losing all interest in what was happening. That's when I decided to give up, life's too short.
I loved the story line. The characters were relatable and seemed to work well together. There could have been more to the conflict- it seemed easily resolved, but worked with the level of tension the author created. It wasn't overly dramatic and then quickly resolved, which drives me crazy. It was moderately dramatic and made sense. I will definitly be picking up the rest of the series.
