The Maddening
Not yet published
Expected 17 Aug 27In this bewitching atmospheric novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Unmaking of June Farrow, a disgraced art historian discovers a cursed painting and enlists a local historian, who has secrets of his own, to help her break the curse before it strikes again.
After a professional misstep jeopardizes her future, art historian Holden Fellows begrudgingly accepts a residency cataloging a private art collection in the Scottish estate of Dunrath near the tiny seaside village of Glenarraidh.
At first glance, the location is idyllic, all rolling green hills, salt air, and quiet village charm. Holden expects to disappear into Dunrath’s dusty archives while her fate is decided, but the house has its own memory, and it does not give up its secrets easily. The further Holden ventures, the clearer it becomes that something darker lies beneath its surface.
When Holden uncovers traces of a painting she believes could restore her reputation and salvage her career, she begins investigating its origins. But with each clue she uncovers, strange occurrences follow. The search pulls her from cluttered attics through rain-soaked glens and into the orbit of Dr. Finnan Rowe, a scholar and former foe whose motives are as mysterious as the painting itself. As old tensions resurface, the two begin to piece together the artwork’s hidden past—only to uncover a sinister legacy, one that has haunted the women of Glenarraidh for generations.
